Re: [MBZ] OT - New computer

2009-04-20 Thread Allan Streib
Honestly, unless it's a relative new and large capacity drive, it's
probably not worth the trouble. An old 2GB drive for example is hardly
worth bothering with, considering any new PC will likely have a 120GB or
larger hard drive out of the box. That 2GB drive does not really add
much capacity, and if it's old its lifespan may be nearing its end.

Wilton's is installed in a separate case, external from the computer. He
was talking about taking the disk out of the old computer and putting it
in an external box that's connected to the new computer with a USB cable.

As you commented earlier, connecting a disk internally is harder. You have
the possibility of different types of data busses, as well as the need to
set jumpers on some types of disks.

Once you do have the disk connected correctly internally, you may have
more difficulty in assigning it a disk letter (i.e., something like E:\).
With the external disk Winders knows to add it automatically.

Go the way (internal or external) you feel most comfortable with.

Re: [MBZ] Leaky W123 fuel line stubby end piece

2009-04-20 Thread WILTON
It's merely a very short piece of injector fuel return line/tubing that
Rusty and "stealers" sell by the meter. If you have some new return tubing,
cut a short piece of it, pull the plug out of the old piece, push it into
the new piece and push the short piece of tubing onto the injector "nipple."
If you don't have any new tubing, look at the return lines on the other
injectors; if one of the other return lines is excessively long, cut off a
short piece of it to make a plug to use on that last "nipple."

WILTON wrote:

Following are procedures for removal of 126 center console/switches:

1. Open the ashtray and remove the inner tray by lifting it up and out.

2. This will reveal two small screws securing the ashtray holder to the
console.

3. Remove the two screws (use a magnetic bit to prevent dropping them
- if you drop one, it's HISTORY, lost forever down in the console
innards).

4. Pull the ashtray holder up and out to the right, either unplugging
the electrical wire or leaving it dangling out of the way.

5. Pull forward on the small tray in front of the wood panel (between
the ashtray and the console) and remove it

6. Use a thin bladed instrument such as a paring knife or
plastic-edged wedge tool to pry up the plastic bezel around the
gearshift lever - be careful to avoid scratching the wood finish

7. Pull the wood panel forward to free securing tabs at thre rear of
the panel from the console houaisng. As you lift the panel up and out
with one

hand, you will have to use the other to remove (unplug) all the wire
connectors from the switches on the panel. There are LOTS of them.
You may have to yank hard on some of them.

8. With the wood out of the car, examine the staples securing the black
plastic switch armature to the underside of the panel. You will
likely find some of them have loosened, and although you can push them
back in, they will not stay. Use VERY small wood screws to replace
the loose staples. Here, you're on your own - one false move with a
too-long screw and you'll ruin the

top side of your wood.

9. Installation is the reverse of the above.

I think the switches on the 300SD need to be cleaned, either
non-working or intermittent. Anyway, I took the switches and panel
out of the 300SD junker, vaguely recall the panel sliding forward
then up and over the shifter, with the little bin removed? The
switches come out when the little ears are squeezed, but you gotta do
that from under the panel. I looked in the maint manual, it is also
rather vague on the procedure. Do I have that correct?

Re: [MBZ] radio online

2009-04-20 Thread Wonko the Sane
And I can't get BBC Television online in the US. We all bear our crosses.

Pandora asks you like (i.e., Grateful Dead) and feeds you similar songs.
You'd do just as well finding streaming audio to suit your tastes. If you
like classical, as Wilton and I do, you can't go wrong with what he
suggested. If you like classic rock, one of our Des Moines radio stations
(KGGO) streams online and has a pretty good mix. For jazz, SmoothJazz.com
can't be beat. ... I've been known to dip into all three, although it is
WCPE 99% of the time. Sometimes, after a stressful hour long meeting, Mozart
doesn't cut it, and one needs a couple of minutes of Led Zepplin.

If you have downloaded ITunes, you have access to a long list of radio
stations online but you do need a high speed connection. I listen mostly
to

Classical UK and WHRO.

2009-04-20 Thread WILTON
My old HD connected to the new computer doesn't know nor care if it's inside
or outside; 'works the same either way and was plug-and-play easy - 'just
plug it in, turn it on and it's done.

BTW, my old computer was fine for what I need if I could have depended on
its working when I needed it; it "hung up"/stopped too much; had to reboot
often, etc., and, of course, I couldn't get upgraded programs for some stuff
I wanted to run.

I was thinking about installing the old HD internally into the new pc, but
someone told me, you have to fiddle with pins on the back of the HD to
tell
the comp it's a slave drive. It all started to sound pretty confusing
fast.

lol

My plan for the future is to keep most info on external drives, and the
comp
pretty much free. Haven't decided if the next comp will be another
desktop,

or take the jump and go laptop. For me, storage was always the biggest
issue with computers and what made me upgrade to newer stuff. Truth is,
for

95% of what I do, a 10 year old pc works pretty much ok, other than you
become stuck with hardware that won't allow softward upgrades.

cables inside the unit, close it up, plug the unit's USB cable into new

power
switch, and it comes up on the new computer screen as one of the new

machine. I borrowed a friends older Zip machine, as you mentioned using

Once I get everything moved over, I'll back up on an external HD, but

Macs are easier -- I have hooked up all sorts of combinations of hard
drives (SCSI, IDE, external, internal, firewire, USB) with no
trouble at all.

They also read Windoze and DOS disks and hard drives, although the
programs will only run if you have the correct emulation software
loaded.

[MBZ] Creating a 240 3.0 (T)D

2009-04-20 Thread Steve MacSween
If you think I asked this same question a couple of years ago, yeah I did
but I lost a hard drive in the interim so bear with me as I cannot remember
where the discussion went.

I have a 240d with a toasted motor that I want to convert to a 5 cyl. diesel
or turbodiesel. But I want to keep the 240d AUTOMATIC transmission, as it
performs like new.

Has anyone actually mated a 617.952 to the AUTOBOX installed in 240d?

One local Benz wrench swears he did such a swap at least once, years go.
Other says it won't work.

Thx

Mac

Likely to cause problems sorting out an even idle?

The reason I ask is that I once forgot to install one seal/shield on my 240d
and it idled really strange.

If you have downloaded ITunes, you have access to a long list of radio

Re: [MBZ] Leaking Plastic Radiator End Tanks

2009-04-20 Thread Peter Frederick
Leave the radiator cap loose so it won't pressurize and watch the
temp gauge CONSTANTLY-- shut it down at the first sign of temps over
120C.

Bars may or may not do anything for you -- it won't hurt, but is also
unlikely to seal the rotten core to the tank.

Re: [MBZ] Driving a turbodiesel missing 3 injector seals

2009-04-20 Thread Peter Frederick
Sluggish performance, fuel bubbling out around the injectors. Could
burn the pre-chambers if they leak really badly, but otherwise no
real issuse, I don't think. If it starts and runs, they are sealed
pretty well.

May toast the injector nozzles though.

Re: [MBZ] Leaking Plastic Radiator End Tanks

2009-04-20 Thread Curt Raymond
My 240D had some cooling system issue, I forget what exactly, waterpump? After
I'd picked it up from my Indy I was driving home and realized the radiator was
leaking. I turned around and as I arrived in his yard the temp started to rise.
The upper tank had come loose (240D has a upper lower tank type) from the core
and spewed everywhere...

Bars leaks WILL cause your car to overheat when the thermostat siezes closed,
BTDT, twice...

I'd get some of this
http://www.permatex.com/products/Automotive/specialized_maintenance_repair/radiator_fuel_tank_repair/Permatex_Gas_Tank_Radiator_Repair.htm

and effect a booger repair as best as possible until a proper replacement can
be completed. Drive easy and carry water with you. Good luck!

two of them on sale 8 years ago, but let a friend have the spare, and now the
one I've been wearing for eight years is a corroded piece of crap and I've got
the clasp on the band taped shut.

I got a set of Thule from a local classified ad in 1990 for like $50, with four
bars, four gutter feet, and four locks. I don't think I've ever needed the long
bars, the PO used to carry multiple sailboards.

Most of the gutter stuff has probably been thrown in the trash by now, but you
might check Craigslist or fleaBay for "thule gutter" or "yakima gutter".
Yakima bars are round IIRC, you can probably do just fine with a length of pipe
or conduit and a couple of yakima feet.

Re: [MBZ] Up the down rear window - 1985 300CD

2009-04-20 Thread Jim Cathey

Your problem could be either switch, or even both of them.
Just open and clean them. It's easy, and well worth the
trouble. The sides of the body pry open, releasing the
rocker. Then the parts come out. There are two springs,
two BB's, and two moving contacts inside. Contact (or brake)
cleaner and a small wire brush or penknife will do the
job. A dab of grease to hold the BB's to the springs
and you put the rocker back in.

Re: [MBZ] Up the down rear window - 1985 300CD

2009-04-20 Thread andrew strasfogel
We made it home with a taped up rear window - thanks for all the help.

I swapped out the master driver's side PW switch and the LR window closed!
But when I lowered it for a second test, I got another non-response and it
refused to rise! I was finally able to get the switch to work but this has
me worried. It appears the bad connection is in the plug, not necessarily
the switch itself (or maybe both?). So how eactly do I improve the
connection? I am assuming the problem is in the console wiring but is there
any chance the switch on the LR panel in the back seating area is the
culprit? We rarely drive this car with rear seat passengers, so that switch
has scarcely been used for 10 years.

4spd really? Might that be a rare variety of 2.2l? All the ones I've ever seen
(including one that was old enough not to have a serpentine belt) with mannys
were 5spds. IIRC Marshalls 2.0L grey market was also a 5spd.

There
are two 190D 2.2s in the Kansas City PNP. There was one last month too,
but it's gone now. Neither are picked over very much. One is a 4 speed
and the other is an automatic.

FYI

Re: [MBZ] 1981 300D - $600 - Indiana

2009-04-20 Thread Allan Streib

I'd say it's just that this is really a pretty small group. What are
there, maybe 20 or 30 who post on any regular basis? You easily get
100x that exposure on a local CraigsList ad.

The timing of you selling vs. someone else needing is pretty hard to hit
with a group that small.
