This is a 1970 Mercedes Benz 220 Diesel 4-door sedan. This all original car
is red on the outside and black leather on the inside. It has a manual
transmission to go along with the rare diesel engine. The automobile runs
great and I am asking only $3500 for this classic piece of Mercedes history.

I have a 2 yr old GPS unit. The mounting thing broke, so I called them
to get another one. They sent me one no charge (I was ready to pay for
it, she said they would just send me one), but I told them the wrong
unit number, so have to send it back for another one. Called again,
they said keep the other one, we'll send you the right one no charge. I
insisted to send back the wrong one, she finally said OK and gave me the
info. Both times I talked to them they were extremely nice.

Now I suppose the thing is cheap enough that it is probably more bother
to restock it than to just let me keep it, but I think that is excellent
customer service.

Here I sit in my little camp in Maine. You flatlanders (yer not from Maine
(well mostly) so yer a flatlander) would probably call it a quot;cabinquot;
or quot;cottagequot; or something else cutsy but this is northern Maine so
its a camp.
I#39;m about 3/4 mile from the paved road but only about 5 miles out of town.
The land has been in my family for at least 100 years and is pretty easily
traced to a grant from the king before we got it.
My uncle Pat built the camp in about #39;64 when he had the dam built to make
the pond out front. Uncle Pat didn#39;t use a level when he built the place
and thus its quot;rusticquot;.
We#39;re far enough out that electricity would be silly expensive so we#39;ve
got gas lighting. Its warm today so the fire in the stove is out but we had it
going all day Monday.

I#39;m typing on my Blackberry which is by far the loudest thing around though
in the distance I can just hear a tractor planting grain. The blackberry is the
most advanced technology we#39;ve ever had in the camp and I think may be the
limit of what is acceptble here. You get a nice quiet place and next thing you
know some idiot wants a tv...

cottage or something else cutsy but this is northern Maine so its a camp.
I'm about 3/4 mile from the paved road but only about 5 miles out of town.
The land has been in my family for at least 100 years and is pretty easily
traced to a grant from the king before we got it.
My uncle Pat built the camp in about '64 when he had the dam built to make
the pond out front. Uncle Pat didn't use a level when he built the place and
 thus its rustic.
We're far enough out that electricity would be silly expensive so we've got
gas lighting. Its warm today so the fire in the stove is out but we had it
 going all day Monday.

I'm typing on my Blackberry which is by far the loudest thing around though
in the distance I can just hear a tractor planting grain. The blackberry is
the most advanced technology we've ever had in the camp and I think may be
the limit of what is acceptble here. You get a nice quiet place and next
thing you know some idiot wants a tv...

Started to buy one a while back but was so confused by all their models and
features, gave up on it.
All I want is one that shows mph, is small enough I can hold it up to my ear
and hear directions, hold it close enough to read the display if that's more
convenient, and has software for the U.S.
If you guys could suggest a model number, I'd really appreciate it. Price

I recently went through all the models, and decided that nuvi 255w met my
needs at the lowest price. It doesn't have bluetooth, but then neither does

move into, but I've been doing that for years, so figured I could do without

arrived yet, so no hands-on report.

Yes, it is definitely bigger. The former breakfast nook is now part of the
kitchen. It was just wasted space before. The kitchen is almost twice as
large as it was before. We have more than twice as much countertop space as we
had before and at least 75% more cabinet space AND we have a dishwasher! We
have lived there for 4 years without a dishwasher. We did dishes the old
fashioned way and the countertops were so low that we had to really stoop to so
the dishes. After doing the dishes, I would always have a backache. AND it
wasn;t just because I was tall. My wife (who is only 5'8 had to bend over to
do the dishes. The contractor really did a seamless job in taking out the wall
and retrofitting the old crown moulding to make it look original. I can't take
any credit for that.

I've had 4 GPS's, 3 Garmin Streetpilots and 1 Magelleon {Cheapo Model}

My StreetPilots have been wonderful. They are old tech, a little clunky. Big
plus is they are full of features, have remote {Which is very handy} and get be
bouight for $100 at refurb. They are not portable and will not do all the
ancillary things the newer units do.

Garmin Tech support is very good, seldom needed!

Even my mechanic couldn't figure it out, and eventually had to remove the

defeated ANY tool from being used to make this job feasible.

Of course, they didn't have you in mind.

Oh, it's the install your having trouble with? Somehow I missed
 that.

Maybe my old one isn't as tight as a new one, or maybe it's the
30 years mechanic experience, but I reached in the port side
hole and held the lock arm down with one finger and snapped the
drive rod into place with my thumb.

Maybe you can get away with taking the latch unit only partway
 out...

Price
is unimportant.
Thanks,

X2 on Garmin! I bought my wife a Nuvi a while back and had trouble
upgrading the firmware through the website. I called customer service and
had the call answered within a few rings! I spoke to an actual American
person in Olathe KS. He had me up and running within minutes!
Greg Fiorentino

Seems expensive. I've seen good engines sell for a little over $300.
What's the labor charge to R/R a cylinder head for a W123 300TD vs. an

needs at the lowest price. It doesn't have bluetooth, but then neither does
my phone. It doesn't show me which lane I'm in., and which one I need to
move into, but I've been doing that for years, so figured I could do without
that as well. Otherwise, it has the updated UI, and seems OK. It hasn't

very good; plenty of warning for turns; specifies lanes, etc; no Bluetooth. I
recharge it by plugging into computer USB; also comes with car charger and
windshield/dashboard mounting, but I mount it in lower rt corner of 124 inst
cluster (in front of tac) with Velcro. 'Was gonna mount it there in the 126
last Sat, but instrument cluster lens/cover is at wrong angle, so I mounted it
with Velcro in center of dashboard in front of center AC vents; works very well
in both locations. Ran 6 hours before it indicated low bat.

Re: [MBZ] OT Garmin kudos

2009-05-20 Thread Bill R
You do have to have a 'hotspot' to download an send emails, but I have done
it when travelling, though not when moving ... you are never in a hotspot
long enough. The more expensive option [which I don't use] is to have a
Bluetooth capable telephone and link the IPAQ to the phone for continuous on
the go communications and GPS extras. Doing much writing is troublesome on
it though. You can write on the screen [good handwriting to text software],
use the on screen keyboard, or do what I do and get a Bluetooth mouse and
keyboard [I use an iGo Stowaway] for actual composition. You can surf the
internet, bid on eBay items, or check email. It connects to your home
computer via USB connection for Outlook, and also has Word, PowerPoint,
Excel, etc. in Mobile form. I did about 25 pages of my current writing
project on it by going to restaurants early and writing while waiting for
the rest of the crew to show up. I'm sold on it - though I would like to
have a phone built in. I always get a Square Trade warranty on the
electronics I buy on eBay, and after 2 years of continuous use they sent
back my $375 for the used machine because they couldn't repair it. I bought
a Sony UX380N ultra mobile PC for $600 [a full computer in a very small
package], then decided I would rather have the IPAQ RX5915 so resold it and
bought another IPAQ for $112 [I found one cheap because I didn't need all
the extras, I still had those]. I use it for GPS, Google Maps, music and
can watch videos, though I never got the correct software to do that
properly. [I use a 4 Gb SD card for extra storage]. I also use it to play
Monopoly, Yatzee, and a dozen other games during short waits. Could be that
one of the new Smart Phones would be good for you as they also have that
stuff built in and are a phone. I'm just not willing to pay for a data
plan. Users choice, but I wanted something I could wear on my belt and use
a lot every day, and this is it for me.

Re: [MBZ] OT Garmin kudos

2009-05-20 Thread Archer

From: Bill R
BillR
-
Looks like IPAQ would have one with the cellphone and internet feature.
Getting one with the cellphone feature sounds like a good idea since that
would eliminate one carry-around item. Come to think of it, believe I did
see where some cellphones now have GPS.  GPS plus cellphone plus internet;
all in one. That would be the thing to have.

[MBZ] Puzzling TD vac issue

2009-05-20 Thread Rich Thomas
So a few weeks back the vacuum on the TD started going bad, no brake
boost, no shutoff. I got a used brake booster from Kleb and swapped it
for the other used one I had put in a year or two ago. Still no good
brakes. So further research shows the vac pump at idle to be blowing
and sucking (huffing and puffing), at a couple thou RPM I get only 5in
of vac but it is still blowing and sucking but sucking more I guess.
The vac gauge needle jumps all over when measuring right at the main vac
tube before anything is connected.

So ordered a diaphragm. Tore apart the vac pump a couple weeks ago, the
diaphragm was fine but the bolt was a bit loose, so put some more
loctite on it and tightened it up. Same problem. Today I took it apart
again and put the new diaphragm on, and took the check valves out and
tested them by sucking and blowing on them, they seem fine, checking
properly. Put it all back together, same problem. ugh. I might go by
the stealer tomorrow and get some new check valves just to see if one or
both might be bad, though they seem OK. If that doesn't fix it, what
else could it be? Might the hose going to the air cleaner be clogged
(though I blew it out, it seems to be open)?

I can't really think of anything else, the diaphragm seems to be moving
OK otherwise I wouldn't get any huffing or puffing either one. It is
very puzzling.

All W126 models had 14 Bundt wheels. In 1986 they went to 15 flat
face, 15 hole wheels. If the bundts are 15, they are worth a ton of
money as they were only used on the 6.3 and 6.9 older models.

Re: [MBZ] OT Garmin kudos

2009-05-20 Thread Bill R
I thought so also, but I wasn't willing to give up my $25 every three months
cell phone and buy a data plan [sent back a Blackberry for that reason], and
the IPAQ's with the cell phone [my son has one] did not have the larger
screen a few years ago. He bought a Garmin even with the GPS in the IPAQ
phone - I don't think the GPS had a full system like the Tom-Tom in mine,
and he doesn't really use the other features. I looked at a Smart Phone
that has all the features of my IPAQ and a large screen, but it needs a high
dollar monthly data plan. Mine won't make calls, but connectivity is free
at any hotspot, and my cell stays at $25 every three months. I like that.

Mine is a bit outdated at this point, but they are cheap now and the GPS is
good for what I need [full North America map included] for the occasional
times I need it. The pocket pc is used a lot more.

Looks like IPAQ would have one with the cellphone and internet feature.
Getting one with the cellphone feature sounds like a good idea since that
would eliminate one carry-around item. Come to think of it, believe I did
see where some cellphones now have GPS.  GPS plus cellphone plus internet;
all in one. That would be the thing to have.

I buy Trucker's Friend National Truck Stop Directory
published by TR Information Publishers Clearwater FL.

It does not have every station in the country that has diesel
fuel, but it does list a _lot_ of non-big-road locations. My
experience is they list nearly all the places a big truck can
get into to fuel (and did have a listing for a little place in
OH, I think, that wasn't really big enough...) For each
station, they have info about the fuel, if it's 24 hr, parking
lot size, food available, stores, showers, scales, tires,
truck wash, ATM, etc.

All told, _very_ helpful when driving a truck, but handy
enough that I keep buying them even though my biggest rig now

In the US, all 85`s are W123s (if imported by MBUSA) The range of years
(for W123) in Germany was different than here. I bleive in Germany, it
went from 76 to 85. The W124s started a year earlier over there also. We
get every thing a year after Europe for some reason.
I looked for mine for a very long time. 3 months after I bought it, it
was totalled, so i didnt get much time behind the wheel, mostly fixing it
up. I only put a little over 200 hundred miles on it.

My Garmin nuvi 750 slips easily into my shirt pocket.

I have a Nuvi 750 as well. When I drove to Oregon last August, when I left
the van I would take it out of its mount and slip it into my shirt pocket
along with my Daytimer.

They work very well and have features I haven't even thought of using yet.

Check the pricing at Amazon. When I bought mine last July, they were $239.
Now they are $189.99 for new units.

I recharge it by plugging into computer USB; also comes with car charger
and windshield/dashboard mounting Ran 6 hours before it indicated
 low bat.

IIRC, the batteries are not replacable. Use the car power cable so you
don't use up the battery.

I am a bit of a purist as well and live in a nice 1927 Tudor where the
originals would have been lovely. I am sure that Donald likes his new

Listers,

I know there has been some discussion about remodeling and other
various home projects. Well, here is one reason I have not been
adding much to the discussion on the MB list. We remodeled our
kitchen! Some of it was done by a contractor and I did some of the
work (only the easiest stuff where I couldn't hurt myself too
bad). I thought you all might be interested in seeing the
results. This is just a small collection of the pictures. I have
many more pictures of the final result. Our house was built in
1929 and we tried to keep some of the architectural character of
the house. It had lots of cool arches and really beautiful
woodwork. It was a small kitchen and we also had a Breakfast
nook that was really just a small room off of the kitchen that
ended up being not very usable. So, we tore out the wall between
the two rooms and expanded the kitchen. It practically doubled the
space in the kitchen. So, here are some of the before and after
pics.

This is a 1970 Mercedes Benz 220 Diesel 4-door sedan. This all
original car is red on the outside and black leather on the inside.
It has a manual transmission to go along with the rare diesel
engine. The automobile runs great and I am asking only $3500 for
this classic piece of Mercedes history.
If you have any questions or would like to come see it, contact me
at (214) 826-2359.

Thank you.

I guess that is what you get with old slow growth wood. It was VERY
hard. We went through several blades on the sawz-all.

The longer it sits the harder it gets, so it seems.
But I'm sure the slow-growth wood was harder to begin
with.

Does Rusty have the riveted sliders?

Yes he does. And mine are on the way. (I ordered a spare.)

I'll give you $100 for it.

Thanks for the offer, I think I'll pass right now.

I learned last week you can buy just a slider and peen it on the arm.

BTDT, on the SDL.

I suspect Jill has a natural bias against that thing, stemming from
the way she learned it was NOT the SDL.

I'm sure too, but how could I _not_ do what I did? I defy
any one of you to pass up that opportunity. (I mean, when
she walked right by it and didn't twig... it's not like I
was trying to hide it.)
