I recently went through all the models, and decided that nuvi 255w met my needs at the lowest price. It doesn't have bluetooth, but then neither does my phone. It doesn't show me which lane I'm in., and which one I need to move into, but I've been doing that for years, so figured I could do without that as well. Otherwise, it has the updated UI, and seems OK. It hasn't arrived yet, so no hands-on report. Gerry - It could be the voice won't help much as I doubt it would be loud enough [though it does have an earphone jack and is Bluetooth capable so a Bluetooth earphone is a possibility]. I really like the features of my old IPAQ RX5915 Pocket Computer. They are getting cheap [a guy offered me one for $125 yesterday], it is a handheld computer with many applications and includes a built in Tom-Tom with turn by turn voice directions. It does include which lane to get into after you turn, and I find that does really help in an unfamiliar area. It comes with a windscreen mount so it is easily visible, though you might want to construct or fine a sun shield for it. You do need to keep the maps updated for areas that are doing a lot of building [it did not yet know of some new exit ramps on the beltway around Houston], but all in all a very useful item for both the PPC and the Tom-Tom GPS. Restaurants, parks, ATM's, airports, gas stations, etc, etc are all included, as well as a memory for all prior 'navigate to' directions. A couple of times I have also appreciated the HOME feature of the 'navigate to' function. AS I am usually in familiar locations I use the pocket pc a lot more than the GPS. From: Bill R Gerry - It could be the voice won't help much as I doubt it would be loud enough [though it does have an earphone jack and is Bluetooth capable so a Bluetooth earphone is a possibility]. BillR --- The reviews looked really good but I didn't see where it connected to the internet. I was thinking about buying a GPS and a Blackberry so I could stay in touch on the 'net while traveling. [MBZ] OT Garmin
My Garmin Nuvi 750 works great for me; 'saved me very nicely in Charlotte last Sunday. Got it 'bout 6 months ago at Sam's for $300. Voice and visual are very good; plenty of warning for turns; specifies lanes, etc; no Bluetooth. I recharge it by plugging into computer USB; also comes with car charger and windshield/dashboard mounting, but I mount it in lower rt corner of 124 inst cluster (in front of tac) with Velcro. 'Was gonna mount it there in the 126 last Sat, but instrument cluster lens/cover is at wrong angle, so I mounted it with Velcro in center of dashboard in front of center AC vents; works very well in both locations. You do have to have a 'hotspot' to download an send emails, but I have done it when travelling, though not when moving ... you are never in a hotspot long enough. The more expensive option [which I don't use] is to have a Bluetooth capable telephone and link the IPAQ to the phone for continuous on the go communications and GPS extras. Doing much writing is troublesome on it though. You can write on the screen [good handwriting to text software], use the on screen keyboard, or do what I do and get a Bluetooth mouse and keyboard [I use an iGo Stowaway] for actual composition. You can surf the internet, bid on eBay items, or check email. It connects to your home computer via USB connection for Outlook, and also has Word, PowerPoint, Excel, etc. in Mobile form. I did about 25 pages of my current writing project on it by going to restaurants early and writing while waiting for the rest of the crew to show up. I'm sold on it - though I would like to have a phone built in. I always get a Square Trade warranty on the electronics I buy on eBay, and after 2 years of continuous use they sent back my $375 for the used machine because they couldn't repair it. I bought a Sony UX380N ultra mobile PC for $600 [a full computer in a very small package], then decided I would rather have the IPAQ RX5915 so resold it and bought another IPAQ for $112 [I found one cheap because I didn't need all the extras, I still had those]. I use it for GPS, Google Maps, music and can watch videos, though I never got the correct software to do that properly. [I use a 4 Gb SD card for extra storage]. I also use it to play Monopoly, Yatzee, and a dozen other games during short waits. [MBZ] Puzzling TD vac issue
So a few weeks back the vacuum on the TD started going bad, no brake boost, no shutoff. I got a used brake booster from Kleb and swapped it for the other used one I had put in a year or two ago. Still no good brakes. So further research shows the vac pump at idle to be blowing and sucking (huffing and puffing), at a couple thou RPM I get only 5in of vac but it is still blowing and sucking but sucking more I guess. The vac gauge needle jumps all over when measuring right at the main vac tube before anything is connected. So ordered a diaphragm. Tore apart the vac pump a couple weeks ago, the diaphragm was fine but the bolt was a bit loose, so put some more loctite on it and tightened it up. Same problem. Today I took it apart again and put the new diaphragm on, and took the check valves out and tested them by sucking and blowing on them, they seem fine, checking properly. Put it all back together, same problem. ugh. I might go by the stealer tomorrow and get some new check valves just to see if one or both might be bad, though they seem OK. If that doesn't fix it, what else could it be? Might the hose going to the air cleaner be clogged (though I blew it out, it seems to be open)? I can't really think of anything else, the diaphragm seems to be moving OK otherwise I wouldn't get any huffing or puffing either one. It is very puzzling. --R ___ http://www.okiebenz.com For new and used parts go to www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com

Re: [MBZ] OT Garmin kudos
I thought so also, but I wasn't willing to give up my $25 every three months cell phone and buy a data plan [sent back a Blackberry for that reason], and the IPAQ's with the cell phone [my son has one] did not have the larger screen a few years ago. He bought a Garmin even with the GPS in the IPAQ phone - I don't think the GPS had a full system like the Tom-Tom in mine, and he doesn't really use the other features. I looked at a Smart Phone that has all the features of my IPAQ and a large screen, but it needs a high dollar monthly data plan. Mine won't make calls, but connectivity is free at any hotspot, and my cell stays at $25 every three months. I like that. Mine is a bit outdated at this point, but they are cheap now and the GPS is good for what I need [full North America map included] for the occasional times I need it. The pocket pc is used a lot more. It does not have every station in the country that has diesel fuel, but it does list a _lot_ of non-big-road locations. My experience is they list nearly all the places a big truck can get into to fuel (and did have a listing for a little place in OH, I think, that wasn't really big enough...) For each station, they have info about the fuel, if it's 24 hr, parking lot size, food available, stores, showers, scales, tires, truck wash, ATM, etc. All told, _very_ helpful when driving a truck, but handy enough that I keep buying them even though my biggest rig now is less than 18,000lb GVW. -- Philip ___ http://www.okiebenz.com For new and used parts go to www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com

Re: [MBZ] Looking for Wagon
In the US, all 85`s are W123s (if imported by MBUSA) The range of years (for W123) in Germany was different than here. I bleive in Germany, it went from 76 to 85. The W124s started a year earlier over there also. We get every thing a year after Europe for some reason. I looked for mine for a very long time. 3 months after I bought it, it was totalled, so i didnt get much time behind the wheel, mostly fixing it up. I only put a little over 200 hundred miles on it. - Original Message - From: Fmiser fmi...@gmail.com To: Mercedes Discussion List mercedes@okiebenz.com Sent: Wednesday, May 20, 2009 7:03 PM Subject: Re: [MBZ] Looking for Wagon Mike Gildea wrote: Looking for TD Wagon, preferably 1985, to replace the one i have ,that has been totaled by a teenager out of control. Striplin wrote: I like the before better. Donald Snook wrote: Listers, I know there has been some discussion about remodeling and other various home projects. Well, here is one reason I have not been adding much to the discussion on the MB list. We remodeled our kitchen! Some of it was done by a contractor and I did some of the work (only the easiest stuff where I couldn't hurt myself too bad). I thought you all might be interested in seeing the results. This is just a small collection of the pictures. I have many more pictures of the final result. Our house was built in 1929 and we tried to keep some of the architectural character of the house. It had lots of cool arches and really beautiful woodwork. It was a small kitchen and we also had a Breakfast nook that was really just a small room off of the kitchen that ended up being not very usable. So, we tore out the wall between the two rooms and expanded the kitchen. It practically doubled the space in the kitchen. So, here are some of the before and after pics.
