I would like to voice my opinion on this issue. I am as much or more,
a tech head than a gearhead. I am subscribed to *multiple* tech lists.
Some of these have a very strict on topic rule. NANOG (The North
American Network Operators Group) and NERC (North [American] Electric
Regulatory Council) are some of the strictest.

With these groups, I do read or interact with them when I have a
technical issue arise. Otherwise, my current unread message header is
showing 1,718 for NANOG specifically. I do *not* read the group, just
to read the group. Nor do I interact with *any* of the list members
just to interact. If I do not have a need, I ignore them.

If this group went strict on topic, I'm very afraid it would die. As a
matter of fact look at the MB Vets list that Kaleb also runs. The last
post on there was from last week, asking if the list was still alive,
because the last post before that was several months before.

The entire reason this group works the way it does is *because* it is
off topic tolerant. People are here *reading* the discussions, not
ignoring them. So that when a relevant on topic question is asked, it
gets noticed, and responded to, and responded to, and then fought
about.

The Vets group, a question gets asked, then ignored, and then 6 to 7
years later an answer comes along. By which time you've either sold
the car because you couldn't figure it out, or you've asked the
question here and gotten an answer.

Just my two cents,

EdB

I personally take great personal offense to being called a closed
minded snob. While I have love for vehicles from Chevrolet, Ford and
Chrysler I have to say that most of the 90's specifically is a blur.
Very few people, even here, are old enough to truly remember that
General Motors didn't spring forth fully formed. It was started by
William Durant after building Buick into the largest auto manufacturer
in the U.S. That was 1908

Ransom Eli Olds, the founder of Oldsmobile, also was the founder of
the REO Motor Company (as in the REO Speedwagon) and the Olds Motor
Vehicle Company. Oldsmobile was acquired by GM late in 1908.

In 1909 GM bought Cadillac and a little company called Oakland Motor
Car Company of Pontiac, Michigan. In 1926 the Pontiac built on
Oakland's lines was introduced and outsold it's parent. Causing
Oakland to fade and become Pontiac which we all know was recently
closed.

Ah, Cadillac. Such a beautiful car company. Co-founded in 1901 by
Henry Ford as the Henry Ford Company. Ford, who did not get along with
a consultant hired by another co-founder, left his own company.
William Murphy renamed the company to Cadillac Automobile Company.

Which was also Henry Ford's second company anyway, his first the
Detroit Automobile Company was only solvent for two very short years.
His third company, the Ford Motor Company also had several
co-founders. Two of these, Horace Dodge and John Dodge, were better
known as the Dodge Brothers. Co-founders of the Dodge Brothers Company
in 1900.

However, tragedy struck and both Dodge brothers died the same year.
Enter a former president of General Motors and founder of his own
newly fledged car company. Walter Percy Chrysler. Also a founder of
the DeSoto Motor Company and Plymouth Motor Company.

The big three such a laugh really when you think long and hard
about it. Being a born and bred native of Indianapolis, IN, I grew up
driving past the Auburn/Cord/Duesenberg Building. Dusenberg put Rolls
Royce to shame and coined a phrase known the world over, "It's a
Doozy"

Cord was the first ever front wheel drive car.

Auburn, Cord, Dusenberg, Willy's Overland, AMC, Plymouth, DeSoto,
Pontiac, REO, Olds Motor, Detroit Automobile, Henry Ford Company,
Studebaker, Checker Motors, Edsel, Hudson, Imperial, Mercury, Nash,
Packard, Pierce-Arrow, Stutz, and many many more I'm sure.

What do they all have in common? All *American* car companies that are
now dead and gone. I don't believe the American Auto Industry *should*
die, I believe it *is* dying and has been since the very first car was
built in this country. But like a phoenix, it will continue to
resurrect itself. We *may* see the end of one of the current big
three, but it will only leave a hole for a new company to appear.

Oh wait, Tesla Motors, Inc. creator of electric cars and a look
forward. Maybe they are poised to become the next 100 year American
Auto Manufacturer.

Yes, Tom. I sent this to your personal address as well. You want to
get into a snit and run away, that's your choice, but next time you
make such a statement to a *diverse* community of people, maybe you
should look in the mirror and find out exactly where the finger is
pointing.

Not ever, in my opinion. That's one of the things that the Japanese
especially will not allow. They are here because we have so much open
land that has no current use though it is serviceable land unlike many
other places in the world. Look at England (specifically the actual
British Isles), look at Japan itself. These places have been populated
for hundreds of years past what the U.S. has under it's belt and as
such it's people on top of people. So the Japanese love owning U.S.
land.

But I promise you, if the U.A.W. walks into Toyota tomorrow and
announces "We're here!" (meaning they get the union in the door)
Toyota will simply say "Oh, so nice to have you here. Wish you'd
gotten here earlier because we were moving today. This half of the
machinery is going to Canada and that half to Mexico. Sorry you wasted
the time to make the trip. Good day."

One of the reasons the U.A.W. *can't* get a foot in the door of the
non-American owned, American plant auto makers is because 1) They've
learned from GM, Ford and Chrysler's mistakes and watched what the
union has done to them which has lead to 2) Giving line workers a high
level of respect and guidance as well as *competitive* benefits so
that 3) Why would the workers *want* a union that is just going to
take dues out of their pay packet to promise to give them things they
already have.

Not that I know anything more than heresy and rumors. I work in electricity.

I have 2 mercedes 300E, one is a 89' and the other is a 86'. Both
cars are the exact same both body and engine. The 86' is baby blue

you still can drive it jus hard to steer. The 89' is a Chocolate
brown w/ tan leather and needs a alternator, battery, and jus had a
new exhaust put on it not but 8 months ago. Both cars need your
basic tune up. You could simply choose which one you'd like to drive
then strip the other one for the parts, therefor your not spending
money on the parts, just have to find someone to do the work. They
have been sitting for 2 months and both have a flat, but most likely
would also need to be towed to where your going. So please ONLY

[MBZ] AC charging

2009-05-24 Thread Jim Cathey

I tried to charge the 560 SEL's AC yesterday, and I couldn't
get any sane behavior on the gauges, and no charging. Later
that day I recalled that I'd had the same problem with the
Chicken Wagon, problems that even took me so far as to replace
the compressor with another one. (Unnecessarily, of course.)
I checked, and it _was_ the exact same problem.

And what is that problem, you might say? The (Robinaire)
charging hose wouldn't go on the fitting far enough to
depress the plunger! The barrel diameter on the Blue Point
(Snap-On's cheaper line) gauge set is 0.335", whereas the
fitting on the CW was 0.350", and the SEL was 0.358". Wouldn't
quite fit. The CW I filed down so that the gauge would go on.
On the SEL I tried a lesser charging hose, an Imperial Eastman,
and it went on far enough to work.

None of this is cheap crap stuff, and it is obvious to the
most casual handler that it is all much higher quality than
my Harbor Freight R134a gauge set, but there you go.

Anyway, one can of secret sauce later, and some supplemental
R290, and it was down to 48 degree vent temperatures. I had
to refill my (refillable) R290 torch cylinder a couple of times,
using one of those charge-it-yourself fag fittings that only
really works with a now-banned old-style hamburger gas tank.
(Which I still have and use, filling them myself from a
liquid-feed forklift tank that I run Big Bertha off of, and
that I _can_ get refilled.)

The enviro-nazis sure do make it hard!

the problem is that if you give the government the 1%, they just come and

When I go to a car show I know to keep conversation about the cars. I

Re: [MBZ] unsubscribe

2009-05-24 Thread Hendrik & Fay
One of the big disadvantages of a an email based discussion forum is
that it is all lumped in one big pot, this is where a board based forum
is better.
However these sort of 'old school' lists do work if people play by the
rules and have some consideration for others.
Kaleb is doing a good job of moderating the list but we cannot expect
him to do everything for us, sometimes we have to take responsibility
for our actions and yes this involves NOT posting, even though we feel
like telling some else on the list exactly how we feel.

Re: [MBZ] 78 300SD ac

2009-05-24 Thread Peter Frederick

Oh, the ACC fan.

Probably the PBCU -- the switch (the "porcupine") rarely fails. I
had to swap my PBCU for a good one due to intermittent fan operation
-- ok in the winter for normal use, but no reliable defrost is
dangerous.

Easy enough to test -- the PBCU outputs a voltage between 0 and 6V to
the controller -- if not present, the PBCU is toast. If present at
the controller and no fan (and the fan runs with direct voltage), its
the controller.

However, check the fan motor -- they get progressively stiffer as the
bearings go, and will stop turning at less than max on time. Usually
start popping the fuse then, too.

BTDT, and still need a new fan motor for one car.

The fan is operated via a pressure switch on the receiver/dryer --
if the switch is bad, no AC speed on the fan.

Re: [MBZ] unsubscribe the political posts

2009-05-24 Thread Hendrik & Fay

Well Kaleb did say that political stuff was for banned lite.
However the fact remains that Tom choose to participate in a
semi-political discussion and then choose to leave when someone said
something he did not agree with.
That is his choice and he is an adult and has to make decisions. He also
may well not have participated but still unsubcribed because he thinks
we are all a bunch of idiots and not worthy of his time.
Far as the ban on all OT goes, that has been discussed and decided.
Seems there is lots of things that we have in common apart from MB and I
have no problem with that, apart from a 2000 post gun talk fest. I don't
mind some gun talk (out of consideration for other list members) and as
such am not calling for a blanket ban or quitting the list if there is a
month long discussion on which handgun has the most stopping power, to
stop the King of England taking over the US. I just use the delete key
and have been known to politely ask that the thread is moderated.
End of the day politics is a no go zone here, even if disguised as car
company bailout talk because the government is involved with that and
people do have views as to how it should pan out. I could see it getting
nasty a mile off. There are people here with strong opinions and they
are not afraid to let others know that.

Maybe. Or maybe the Klima is stupid and shuts it off for
no good reason. Or maybe the clutch is slipping. How does
the hub feel when turned by hand?

BTW, on a 124, the folks who had it have the acc fan wired to a
switch, on or off. Is this likely a problem in the PBU or maybe the
blower motor resistor porcupine? I do NOT want to have a switch, I

It's probably a bad porcupine, but it could be the PBU too.
Hard to say without doing the testing. Both parts are expensive,

What happened to it? Did it seize and the belt-saver

and so far so good. Zero cost, essentially. See:

http://userweb.windwireless.net/~jimc/mb190d.html#20Dec2007

No point if the car doesn't have a belt-saver, because
it would probably grind itself into scrap before it
seized hard enough to stop.

Then again, perhaps it was smoking like a smokestack and using a

they couldn;t hear the rod knocking?

But you'd still have a bent rod and possible a damaged crank and piston.

Re: [MBZ] 78 300SD ac

2009-05-24 Thread Kaleb C. Striplin
My 95 E300 that I just got done putting back together has a locked up
compressor. It seems to have a charge on it though, because it will
kick in for a split second before the belt save turns it off.

BTW, on a 124, the folks who had it have the acc fan wired to a switch,
on or off. Is this likely a problem in the PBU or maybe the blower
motor resistor porcupine? I do NOT want to have a switch, I want to fix
it right.

No point if the car doesn't have a belt-saver, because

2009-05-24 Thread LarryT

1st , and most importantly, I'm not trying to defend the seller.

re: an oil burned and damaged block - I believe that engine uses cylinder
liners - it might be possible to have a bock that would be restored to
"workable" if the liners were renewed.

Now, saying all that, I don't know how the seller would know these details
unless he'd opened the engine and looked at it *very* closely.

I agree with you that he's probably being deceptive - he's saying things he
would know unless he had disassembled the engine - and if he had done that,
why not fix it while in there? The typical "while you're in there, you may
as well" syndrome. ;-)

Perhaps I don't fully understand what is meant by "bent rod problem" as it
pertains to MB diesels - most engines can have a damaged rod and not burn
oil and/or smoke - it all depends on how it was bent, how much and where it
was bent.

I think we were looking at this from different perspectives --

block.

Yeah, I can see that. But a bent rod doesn't burn oil and smoke.
A cylinder bore worn into an oval due to unbalanced combustion
stresses due to a bent rod will burn oil and smoke. But there's
no way that can be considered a good block. Unless by 'good' you

their care, there is the other 1% who act in such a way that government
intervention is necessary. There are valid reasons why child prostitution
and bestiality in the presence of a minor had to be written into Iowa code
as forms of child abuse. In some instances, "the spouse and I" cannot be
permitted to be the ultimate authority.

Yes. My buddy has found blasting material in Four Seasons

If the owner plans to operate the car longer than to just sell it,
the new compressor, with a complete flush and a filter on the suction

Re: [MBZ] Iinstalling Unwiredtools CLIMATE CONTROL

2009-05-24 Thread MG
That's not hot enough. That's just normal running temp you will need
to get it up to that 200 point at least with the AC on. The fan comes
on when the temp switch on the receiver dryer gets too hot. At idle
with the hood open it may not get hot enough. You still need to check
to make sure the fan is still working and then get the engine hot
enough to get to the point that the fan will come on.

The relay is in a box on the left front fender same place as the AC
fuse. It will have a black with red, a red, and two black wires going
to it. You could test the fan motor by jumping the red to the black
at the 87 connection which should go to the fan. The other black goes
to the temp sensor on the dryer.

The heater pump should come on with the AC or if the ambient temp is
below 79 deg F according to the manual.

I have 2 mercedes 300E, one is a 89' and the other is a 86'. Both
cars are the exact same both body and engine. The 86' is baby blue w/
dark blue leather interior and needs a power steiring gearbox yet you
still can drive it jus hard to steer. The 89' is a Chocolate brown w/
tan leather and needs a alternator, battery, and jus had a new
exhaust put on it not but 8 months ago. Both cars need your basic
tune up. You could simply choose which one you'd like to drive then
strip the other one for the parts, therefor your not spending money
on the parts, just have to find someone to do the work. They have
been sitting for 2 months and both have a flat, but most likely would
also need to be towed to where your going. So please ONLY SERIOUS
REPLYS thank you.. My name is Joe give me a call at 708-713-1927

There are things called "employee stock ownership plans" (ESOPs) where
employees are granted stock ownership as a benefit. The company
contributes a certain number of shares, and they are apportioned out to
individual employee accounts based on things like seniority.

I don't know much more about them, but I don't think you can buy more of
your own shares you just get your piece of what the company puts in.

Many 401Ks have the option to buy company stock, but I've never been
part of one that did not have a lot of other alternatives.

IMO, it's technically possible to have a bent rod that doesn't contact the
block. But tht makes me wonder why they disassembled the engine to inspect
it? Perhaps they heard what Marshall said: "it's not IF but WHEN." and
decided to take it apart and find out if it;s damaged.

Then again, perhaps it was smoking like a smokestack and using a quart of
oil per mile - ot perhaps the muffler was blown out and they couldn;t hear
the rod knocking?

But you'd still have a bent rod and possible a damaged crank and piston.

on it not but 8 months ago. Both cars need your basic tune up. You
could simply choose which one you'd like to drive then strip the other

CALPERS (Commiefornia Public Employee Retirement System) is/was one of the

could inject left wing politics into the corporate board decisions of Fortune

I know not to buy a reconditioned R4, but what about the newer cars with Denso
compressors?

I'm supposed to help a friend replace the 10PA15C Denso on his Toyota.
I can get a Four Seasons rebuild with no clutch for $90, a Delco rebuild with
clutch for $160, or a new Denso with clutch for $260.
I'm leaning towards the new Denso. Is it worth the extra $$ since he has no
plans to dump the car soon?

If you don't think Toyota will have legacy costs, you have done no
research and are spouting about that which you know nothing of. Please
stick to watches, fintails and junk Saturns.

Legacy Costs are what you get when you don't pay or expense your payroll costs
as you incur them. In some cases, the big automakers are still paying for the
cars that were sold in the 1950's, and they didn't factor in this expense back
when they sold the cars. If you put money in a pension fund as you incur the
pension liability, you'll be fine.

I became an activist because of my concerns about where America appears to be
heading. If you are of the same mind set, please join at:

http://www.the912project.us/ And http://www.resistnet.com/ then join your
state group.

We are gaining more new members every day and need as many as possible. I was
# 12 joining one state group and it now has over 400 members in one city.

Our goal it to control the 2010 elections and get back some check and balance

We will lose the "gun Control" battle but there are many more we can win.

Our guns will be control by one of two treaties or both, President Obama favors
both.

President Clinton signed the UN child protection treaty but could not get it
ratified. Senator Feinstein pledges to get it done during this congress.
There are rules about guns being around children that will be the control.

Article VI of the constitution states that treaties are the supreme law.

The other international treaty is all about controlling guns and ammo. I think
we will end up there, no more reloading.

Join us, we need numbers.

Thanks

Re: [MBZ] Iinstalling Unwiredtools CLIMATE CONTROL

2009-05-24 Thread Jim Cathey
So with the car at idle for a long time and the temp is at 175' - just
under 200' the fan does not come on. Yes the fan did work a while ago.
Which ice cube relay is it anyway?

On many (most?) 123's the aux fan is only for the AC system,
and even then only comes on when it gets too hot.

Also does the aux heater pump run all the time?.. Yesterday when I
drove to the auto parts store the pump didn't run?..

I think they only run when the heat is on.

the foreign companies building here dont have union workers do they?

Rick Knoble wrote:
the underlying thing is all these auto workers are making WAY too

Actually it is the legacy costs that are hurting them. The retiree
healthcare mostly. The Japanese and German car makers that build in
this country will be facing the same dilemma in another 15 or 20
years. Unless of course The United States gets some form of national
health care, then the burden will be on the US taxpayer and NOT the
foreign transplant companies. But that is a topic for another list.

That's close enough to an 83 so that your aux fan may be set the same way.
I know some others do come on as long as the AC is on but yours, like mine
may not be like that. First check that the fan even works by using some
jumper wires direct to the fan connector under the hood. Mine didn't and I
had to take it apart and clean everything up and oil it. Until you know
the fan works you will be wasting time looking at anything else. Then
drive the car with the AC on till it's good and hot and then stop and
watch the temp gauge and listen for the fan. If it hasn't come on by the
time the temp gets to 100 then you may need to start looking for a bad
connection or bad fuse first and then the relay.

Re: [MBZ] Letter from a Dodge Dealer

2009-05-24 Thread Rich Thomas
Kenny boy stopped taking his heart meds and killed himself sure as if he
had eaten a bullet. He chose the coward's way out rather than face his
responsibilities. Of course, when he offed himself his conviction went
away, and everything Linda had stayed with her.

Skilling was a whole nuther level of evil, that boy had absolutely no
morals or integrity, but he was Kenny's fall guy until Jeffie got wise
and threw it all back in Kenny boy's lap. Honor among thieves
donchaknow. I think Kennyboy actually did a lot of good, and built the
company over many years, but he got tired of running the company day to
day, and found Skilling, and wasn't paying a lot of attention to him,
just doing the Chairman thing and being a big shot, but he tacitly
approved as long as everyone was making lots of money. But then when it
all started going down the drain it was too far gone for Kennyboy to
pull it back, and there you go.

The sad thing was that Enron was actually a very good company, with lots
of hard-working smart people with some really interesting ideas, and was
doing quite well. Then a very small group with completely amoral
members, with Skilling in the lead, got really really greedy, and that
was the beginning of the end. But in some ways that was the times, they
just did it lots more than everyone else. I worked with many of those
who were indicted (most of whom were in my group or directly working on
projects we were doing), convicted, doing their time, and was always
amazed at what they were doing and how they were doing it. I left when
I found out (mostly) what was going on, got most of my package and
payout before things tanked, and mostly moved on with great
disappointment at what could have been. Colleagues who stayed on,
believing what they were being told, lost HUGE amounts of money they had
saved and invested.

coincidental...
