to use Snow Leopard (though in the case of the Core Solo, not at full strength. Snow really loves multiple core/multiple processors) which will be out in Sept, and will keep your Mac current for the next generation, thereby also allowing you to have less worry about what software will not work for you. I want you to use a Mac, I think you'd enjoy it, but that is my opinion and you might hate it. However I also want you to have the best chance at enjoying your experience. Again, in my opinion, none of your neighbors Macs fit the bill. Let him sell them to Mac geeks like myself, that are willing to put up with the PPC quirks and already have knowledge of how to work around them and follow the maxim You get what you pay for and take some time to add a little bit more scratch to your budget and get a Mac you can use for the next few years. Re: [MBZ] OT: Which Apple should I buy?
Hi Dan and Gary, Your discussion about the MacMini is interesting. Looked it up at the Apple website and found it's gone up to about $599 but a MacBook is still only $999. Didn't know they were that cheap. Since the guy with the used Macs listed software (10.4 Tiger iLife) with some of the G3 machines and didn't list an OS with the G4s, it looks like I will have to buy an OS for either of the G4s. Looked up OSs that will supposedly work on G4 iBooks and found one OS-X Leopard 10.5.4 for $60 on Ebay. That would raise the price of the G4 iBook to about $300. Either Mac or MS OSs can be used on a new MacBook according to what I read on the Mac website. Might be able to justify that expense since grandson, who is going to college this fall, is always having virus troubles on his families computer which runs Windows. He could use the MacBook this summer in order to see if he can adapt to a Mac. If he can, he could take it with him to college and I could buy a used G4 iBook or another MacBook. If he doesn't like it, he can just give it back to me or put a PC OS on it. In general, maybe buying a new MacBook would let the whole family try a new Mac. Since both Mac and Windows OSs will supposedly work on a MacBook, it seems like that would be the best laptop anyone could buy when you consider their exceptional repair and support record. Looking at the Apple website, I don't see a lot of difference between the MacBook and the MacBook Pro except a smaller cpu and hard drive. Unless you or Gary know of something I missed about the MacBook, it looks like I've talked myself into ordering either a MacBook or a MacBook Pro. (grin) Thanks, Gerry - From: LWB250 lwb...@yahoo.com I think the mini is really a niche product, myself, just like the AppleTV. While they are very popular, by the time you load one up with any sort of options (most of which cannot be field or user installed) you're within a few hundred bucks of a MacBook, especially with the price drops they've recently initiated. Most of the people I know who have Mac minis use them as media servers for running iTunes, video, gaming and Internet access through their TVs. For a basic desktop machine that only requires you to buy a monitor of some sort, they are a very good deal, especially when you consider the cost as well as the software that's already bundled on them as a part of the OS. If you tried to move towards the high end of the (mini) product line, I don't really see the value. The only thing I could think of is if you have really limited space or want to do some sort of custom desktop install. The first incident occurred May 21, 2009, when TAM Airlines flight 8091 (Brazilian registration PT-MVB) flying from Miami, Florida to Sao Paulo, Brazil, experienced a loss of primary speed and altitude information while in cruise flight. Initial reports indicate that the flight crew noted an abrupt drop in indicated outside air temperature, followed by the loss of the Air Data Reference System and disconnections of the autopilot and autothrust, along with the loss of speed and altitude information. The flight crew used backup instruments and primary data was restored in about 5 minutes. The flight landed at Sao Paulo with no further incident and there were no injuries and damage. The Safety Board has become aware of another possibly similar incident that occurred on June 23 on a Northwest Airlines A-330 (registration unknown) flying between Hong Kong and Tokyo. The aircraft landed safely in Tokyo; no injuries or damage was reported. Data recorder information, Aircraft Condition Monitoring System messages, crew statements and weather information are being collected by NTSB investigators. Further information on both incidents will be released when it becomes available. ### NTSB Public Affairs ** Make your summer sizzle with fast and easy recipes for the grill. Hi Ed, As you can see from the post to Dan, I've about decided to buy a new MacBook. Your opinions on that decision would also be appreciated. Thanks, Gerry -- From: Ed Booher I'm going to wade into this discussion and take the Devil's Advocate position. In the spirit of full disclosure, I do own Apple stock, and generally prefer Mac OS X over all other operating systems. That being said: == $235 A43 APPLE iBOOK G4 A1055 1.33GHz 512MB 60GB DVD WiFi -- $125 A172 APPLE iBOOK G4 A1055 1.33GHz 512MB 60GB DVD WiFi -- The G4 iBook was a very nice machine, and these two examples will allow you to run Leopard, the last PowerPC version of the Mac OS. You will have to learn how to force Leopard onto this system, and as such may become frustrated. With that being said, personally, I wouldn't offer any of these machines to a first time Apple buyer for several reasons without knowing specifically what you want to use a Mac to do. So I will make some assumptions and attempt to talk you forward based on that. First, the PowerPC (PPC) architecture is well and truly dead. Snow Leopard, Mac OS X 10.6, is Intel only and has absolutely no PPC code left in the system. Most games already are using a series of code that allows Windows games to be quickly ported to the *Intel* version of the Mac OS by using some of the WINE code to compile into the code to make the Windows API specific parts of the game think they are running on a Windows machine. This means that there is already software that simply will not run on any version of the PPC Mac OS, and that will only get worse as new software is written specifically for Snow Leopard. Second, out of all of the choices offered above the best ones are the G4 iBooks. These iBooks were introduced in 2004, and as such are already 5 years old technologically. The video processing (which is important for the video you mention) is only 32 MB in an ATI 9200 Radeon chip on the high end. Can you perform video functions with this chipset? Yes. Will it be fluid? Depends on what you are watching. YouTube regular video? Probably ok. YouTube HD video? Really pushing it. Hulu, CBS, ABC, etc? Depends on bit rate and resolution. Basically, bandwidth is important to get the data to you, however, it's still up to the video processor to decode and display that information. Third, while I am confident you will love the Mac OS if given an open and honest chance. There is always that learning curve for new ideology. Meaning, if you have Windows so ingrained that you just can't get your mind to wrap around how the Mac OS does things, you'll always feel like it's mocking you. Making you angry. With a PPC Mac, you are stuck with the Mac OS, or PPC Linux/BSD. Reference the First point and you increase the probability that this machine will sit unused. Fourth, while $235 will not buy you even a Core Solo (Intel) Mac Mini, when you can find them $399 will. In fact Power Max ( http://www.powermax.com/parts/show/c-u66060) has one in stock right now. 1.5 Ghz Core Solo, 512 MB RAM, 60 GB hard drive and 64 MB Video RAM with the Intel GMA950 integrated graphics system. Also not a powerhouse video card, but better at video decoding than the ATI. $599 will get you a Core Duo iMac with integrated 17 LCD monitor. $595 will also get you a 1st Generation Core Duo MacBook as well, if a laptop is truly important to you. What does your $164 (for the Core Solo Mini) in difference get you? Peace of Mind Insurance. The Intel Macs can run Windows. In fact several PC magazines say the best Windows PC to buy is a Mac. So if the Third point comes to pass that you just have to have Windows, you can remove the Mac OS and install Windows and chalk it up as a bad exercise. It also buys you the chance to use Snow Leopard (though in the case of the Core Solo, not at full strength. Snow really loves multiple core/multiple processors) which will be out in Sept, and will keep your Mac current for

Re: [MBZ] More Air Conditioner Repair
On a related, but completely different, note. If you have a vehicle that was originally an R12 system, and you put R134a into the compressor. Knowing that the age of the rings is probably leaking R12 anyway, would the R134a last long enough to make it through this summer to the winter without needing to replace all the rubber in the lines this year? Re: [MBZ] More Air Conditioner Repair
I replace all the o-rings as a matter of course, having learned that if you don't, one will leak sooner or later if the system leaked down in the first place. My old 300D required only replacement of the seal at the compressor manifold to hose set and ran great for years, but all the others ended up with new ones. I've got to round up the set for the expansion valve on the new 300D, having taken a chance last year that I didn't need them. Wrong. Ed Booher edboo...@gmail.com writes: The G4 iBook was a very nice machine, and these two examples will allow you to run Leopard, the last PowerPC version of the Mac OS. If you are going to buy one of these machines just to learn the OS, then one of these would be my recommendation. I run Tiger on my 1Ghz G4 powerbook, I think it will run Leopard but it will probably struggle. There's nothing in Leopard that I really *need* so I've stayed with Tiger. I have Leopard on a newer machine at work, and it's nice, but I really think you need a faster, newer (Intel) Mac to really take advantage of it. Do not, under any circumstances, buy a G3 anything. Agreed, by comparison with anything today it will be slow enough to be annoying. You can run Linux or BSD on it and get some use out of it, but I would not pay for one. If someone gave me one I might play with it. All true, but if you just want to play with Mac OS and see if you might like it enough to invest in a new machine, I think a a couple of hundred dollars for the iBook is not a bad way to go. Even if it's running Tiger, not Leopard. Tiger is still close enough to the current look and feel of Mac OS to allow you to decide if you like it or not. Games? That's just one of those areas I don't give a s*it about and don't know anything about. I'm sure what you say is correct, but if you are not a gamer it's irrelevant. I don't run any purchased software on my Mac other than the OS itself. You can get almost anything from the open source unix world via MacPorts, and there are many other good, free applications that have been ported (e.g. if you need an office suite, you can get OpenOffice). The latest version of Safari is a good browser, but if you want Firefox you can use that, along with Thunderbird email if you don't like Apple's Mail program. Get the iBook, play with it, if you like it enough to want to buy a new Mac you can probably get your money back selling the iBook; it's lost enough of its value already that a few more months won't make much difference. Hi, All. Quick question. Rebuilt the rear brakes on the 190DT (parts from Rusty of course). All went well until it came to putting the discs back on. The new shoes for the Emergency/parking/hand brakes seemed to be about 0.01 too wide, causing the wheel to jam. I chamfered the outer edges and all seems well. Yes, I did triple check everything, including printing out the relevant EPC pages and FSM pages, half hour stare and compare did not show any discrepancy. 1. Shoes too wide? 2. Drum not cut back quite enough? 3. WTF? Fred Moir Lynn MA Diesel preferred. p.s. BZZZTT, it depends on the website you watch video from. HULU, CBS, NBC, and Youtube are all fairly accessible to computers with older video cards. ABC, FOX, and YoutubeHD require a 64MB video card and 1GB system memory. Even at that, it will be choppy if your processor is interrupted by another small process. [MBZ] More AC woes
To add to the chorus of AC problems -- I've been working on getting the AC going again on my 300D. It has not worked in some time and when it threw the AC belt last year summer I did not bother replacing it. With the intention to resurrect the system, I bought some servicing equiptment from Harbor Freight (vacuum pump and manifold gauge set). Last week I put a new belt on and attached the gauges. No pressure on the high side and minimal residual pressure on the low side. I vacuumed the system for half an hour. Closing the valves, it appeared to be holding. I charged the system and got some cooling. Pressures looked good but never got really cold vent temps (I got maybe into the 50s). I did notice that a lot of the cool air was being diverted to the defrost vents because water started condensing on the windshield. I did not really use the AC much on the road because the cooling was so marginal it was more comfortable to just have the windows open. Today I put the gauges back on and there was virtually no pressure in the system. So I've got a major leak somewhere, as the entire charge was lost in about 5 days, without even having had the AC on much in that time. What's the best way to isolate the leak or identify the source? I did notice that a lot of the cool air was being diverted to the defrost vents because water started condensing on the windshield. Effectiveness will suck if the defrost vents don't close. You need to deal with that. Vent temps on a 123 can get down to 39 degrees on a long freeway. That's what I get with the test refrigerant, anyway. What's the best way to isolate the leak or identify the source? Get a jug of kids' bubble solution and start painting it around all the joints. Especially on the compressor manifold and the Schrader valves. Look for bubbles. -- Jim ___ http://www.okiebenz.com For new and used parts go to www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com

Yeah, I run leopard on the desktops, but not the iBook. Just too much monkey shenanigans with that OS for the book to deal with. Were the ibook dual core, I could see leopard, but 10.4 is more than adequate for what I need the laptop to do. clay On Jun 27, 2009, at 9:48 AM, Allan Streib wrote: Ed Booher edboo...@gmail.com writes: The G4 iBook was a very nice machine, and these two examples will allow you to run Leopard, the last PowerPC version of the Mac OS. [MBZ] I dont think the new AC compressor I got from Rusty is any good
So I finished up the complete ac overhaul on this 116 300SD for my dad. When I got the brand new compressor out to fill in the oil, I noticed that I could not turn the thing over by hand. Every compressor I have dealt with you could easily turn them over by hand unless they were locked up or about to lock up. I did get it to turn over using a screwdriver in a couple of the slots on the front of the clutch. So I filled in the oil, turned it over several times per the instructions. Pull a vacuum for an hour, it holds for an hour, charge with proper amount of 134, fire it up, compressor kicks in, seems to be cooling although cant tell yet how well. Problem is, compressor sounds like a can of marbles. This cant be good. I am NOT going to be happy having to pull the system apart again, since the system will have to be opened again I assume I will have to replace the drier yet again. Not to mention the refrigerant, oil etc I will be out. Well, anybody got any ideas? This compressor sure doesnt sound right to me, right from the stiff turning over by hand down the the loud noises it makes. I fear its probably shredding its insides which will require yet another flush. What a nightmare Somebody tell me its normal and it will quiet down on its own after a while. Might try putting in some more oil thru the low side and see what happens. -- Kaleb C. Re: [MBZ] OT: Which Apple should I buy?
There are other differences on the new MacBook Pro, but all that aside, I believe part of Apple's reasoning behind dropping the Pro product line down a notch was to try and get the old 12 G4 PowerBook users onboard. The 12 G4 PB had a following second to none in the notebook world, and I still know some people who are editing video on them in the field because of the size. I don't get the SD card slot, and I suspect that will eventually disappear. They also did the Mini Display port on the 13, as well as bumped it up to FireWire 800, as opposed to 400. I think this is a not to video folks, too, although the Mini Display port is proprietary and has smart functions to prevent the viewing of media that's without DRM, I believe. I know there was an issue with it when it was first introduced last year, mainly because it prevented the viewing of some content, and Apple never said anything about this change until it was discovered by end users. As for buying a used/refurb, do it from Apple. The only difference between new and a refurb is that the refurb will not have retail packaging - everything else that is included with a new Mac will be there. I have bought many refurbs from Apple, and they are as new, as well as carry a full retail warranty and are eligible for AppleCare (3 year warranty.) As for AppleCare, I wouldn't buy a notebook without it, and if you shop around you can find deals on it on eBay and other places - you have the first year to buy it -- after the initial one year warranty is up, no AppleCare. It gives you dibs on the Genius Bar at the Apple Store and unlimited phone support for three years, so it's money well spent. That being said, I have AppleCare on all my machines, and have never had to use it, other than to replace a notebook battery that died after 100 cycles (They consider anything under 300 cycles warranty for the most part.) MacDan --- On Sat, 6/27/09, Ed Booher edboo...@gmail.com wrote: Right now the only difference between a MacBook and a MacBook Pro is Aluminium. This is extremely odd for Apple as they now have only a single product named MacBook, and not a range.(Even if the range is only two choices) As such rumor hungry fans believe the only reason the plastic MacBook still exists is because an entirely new product line will be revealed this fall with the MacBook name. - Original Message - Thanks, Allan. Will do. Gerry From: Allan Streib str...@cs.indiana.edu The new Dell monitor came with a DVI-D cable but it doesn't look like it's a DVI-mini plug which the MacBook requires. I suppose a standard DVI to DVI-Mini adapter would be all that's needed. You need to get a mini-DVI to DVI pigtail, they also make a mini-DV to VGA pigtail, also the new MacBooks have a different mini connector than the older iBooks and PowerBooksso, be sure you get the right one. Easiest thing would be to find the one for your specific computer on at the Apple store. It will cost a little more there, but you're more likely to get the one you need. I think this is a not to video folks, too, although the Mini Display port is proprietary and has smart functions to prevent the viewing of media that's without DRM, I believe. Re: [MBZ] I dont think the new AC compressor I got from Rusty is any good
the problem, kleb, is that a quality unit of the harrison/delphi class is going to cost you at least 250 and maybe as much as 300. so let's just say $275 to split the difference. the one you buy for 100 bucks just ain't gonna make it, man! ok, repeat after me: shanghai white box special is not actually the original maker of general motors AC compressors i and a handful of others am resisting the tempation to go with all white box chinese all the time and we are losing the war because all 90% of customers want is the lower price possible. even i have to make consessions in this area to stay alive am therefore spend a lot of time thinking about what is chinese garbage vs what is really bad chinese garbage vs what is really really ridiculously bad chinese garbage. when i started doing this 10 years ago, i used to mock customers who bought meyle for buying junk. today i wish customers would be willing to even step up to the quality of meyle, which just buries chinese junk in terms of quailty. when i talk to my suppliers about quality, i always ask the simple question of is this something you'd be happy to put on your own car. nowadays the most common answer i'm getting is i wouldn't put that in my trunk. it's a disaster and those of you who brought it about know who you are. as for the very many of you who stand fast and will spend 5 dollars more for lemforder than for chinese generic, i salute you and encourage you to never surrender to the temptation of junk parts. Re: [MBZ] OT: Which Apple should I buy?
Thanks, guys. Ed mentions something about dual video cards being necessary for video editing (below). Since Macs are good for that sort of thing, I had thought about buying a program that will allow retouching of old photos. We have family tintypes and such that are up to 150 years old that I'd like to restore digitally. Would I need dual cards for that sort of thing? My son-in-law would like the video editing feature since he shoots a lot of video. If I got a MacBook with the video editing feature, I could loan the MacBook to him to try. If he liked it he would probably buy a Mac too since video is his main hobby (besides fishing). I just now checked the Apple refurb website and the plastic case MacBook for $749 Ed mentions (see below) that was there this morning is gone; nothing left but aluminum case MacBooks for a higher price, of course. I'll keep checking. Gerry --- From: LWB250 lwb...@yahoo.com There are other differences on the new MacBook Pro, but all that aside, I believe part of Apple's reasoning behind dropping the Pro product line down a notch was to try and get the old 12 G4 PowerBook users onboard. As of last month the difference was dual video cards in the Pro, so if you weren't editing video, etc you could drop to the lower power card, and the 12 MacBook was Aluminium. However, at the WWDC this month they moved the single video card Aluminium MacBook to Pro status changing the game. This is extremely odd for Apple as they now have only a single product named MacBook, and not a range.(Even if the range is only two choices) As such rumor hungry fans believe the only reason the plastic MacBook still exists is because an entirely new product line will be revealed this fall with the MacBook name. Also, if you are buying directly from Apple, don't forget to scroll to the bottom of the Store page and click on Refurbished Mac in the lower left hand corner. Very first option is a Refurbished MacBook 2.0Ghz Core Duo 2 - Plastic (White) 13 inch with 120 GB HD and 2 GB RAM with SuperDrive (DVD Burner) for $749.00 Don't forget, also, to check out LowEndMac (http://www.lowendmac.com) and click the Deals link and check out what a used one is going for as well ($594.99 1.83 Ghz 13 inch with 60 GB HD and 512 MB RAM and Combo Drive) to find the best deal for you. You can perform video editing on any of the MacBook line, but with the Pro's that have the Dual Video Card and Snow Leopard including OpenCL for borrowing unused GPU cycles for apps and Grand Central to truly make use of more than one processor, the Pro's with the second, far more power hungry video card, are designed for intensive video editing. As has been noted in earlier posts, however, there are true professionals still using the PowerBook G4 for video editing. So even the MacBook, with it's NVIDIA GPU, is going to give you a good video editing platform. However, the cheaper last year Mini with integrated Intel GMA950 GPU, not so much. The GMA was for office applications and light 3d acceleration. True hard core video editing slows it way down. In fact I have a video app I can't even use on the Mini, though can on a G5, simply because of the video card and not the CPU. So if you are going to want to do a lot of home movie / DV type editing, MacBook. If you are just doing old digital photo / analog scanned photo touch up, you don't need the power of the faster GPU's. I just now checked the Apple refurb website and the plastic case MacBook for $749 Ed mentions (see below) that was there this morning is gone; nothing left but aluminum case MacBooks for a higher price, of course. I'll keep checking. Yeah, that's the trouble with the refurbs. A lot of times they are only a very few in number, and go quick. But if you are patient and on top of it, you can get a great deal. The more you say, the more it seems you'd be much better served with a MacBook, or MacBook Pro and setting it up as a desktop so you have portability when you need it, but the power to deal with large media files on a regular basis. The Mini is great for Internet users and office apps, typing papers, doing research, etc. My wife uses the Mini to play a lot of World of Warcraft, and now that I can't use my video app (BoinxTV,) it looks like I'm going to have to move up to a MacBook myself. Also, on the note of Boinx, I picked it up from a site called MacHeist ( http://www.macheist.com) if you do get a Mac, and love it, I can not recommend MacHeist enough. About once a year they set up a lot of fake websites, and partner with other Mac software providers, then you have to perform logic tasks to track down a spy leaving clues in the system. With each task you complete, you unlock an Application. Then, when everything is said and done, they release the MacHeist Bundle (which you don't have to play their game to purchase.) This year I paid $49 and received iSale, (an eBay app that lets you create an auction locally with a point and click interface, then single click to Go and start the auction on eBay itself) Picturesque, (which you'd probably like, it's a good little photo touch up program) Souschef, (Recipe Database) World of Goo, (Cute little game) PhoneView, (great if you have an iPhone or iPod Touch, let's you manipulate data directly on the device) LittleSnapper, (I admit, haven't used this much, kind of like an iPhoto database app I think) Acorn, (a bit more powerful photo manipulator, editor) Kinemac, (3D Presentation software) WireTap Studio, (This year the bundle was worth this alone, if it is playing on your Mac, WireTap can capture the audio. Ergo, internet radio and streaming music, click, saved) BoinxTV, (Real Time TV Studio, Multiple Camera Input. If you want to produce an internet TV show, you need this app) Delicious Library, (Use your digital camera to snap a shot of an items barcode, then let the Library add it to your database. Great for insurance claims. Here's everything I owned.) Times, (RSS News Reader app) The point is, for the price of most regular software packages, or a good game, I got a bucket load of software.
