Re: [MBZ] Update on Rusty POS new compressor
alright, alright, I'll bite. I went to look at some computer stuff today, and the store is right next to one of my local mercedes shops. They were closed, but I had a peek through the window, and around the back lots. Couple new E Class coupes on the floor, and several in the holding yard. Funny, all the new Es were coupes, not one sedan. Anyway, my thoughts on the car after seeing it in the flesh. Looks a lot like it does in pictures, which not all cars do. I like the front end. Seems to be the current direction Mercedes is taking, starting with the C. As for the back, not as keen on it. It's looks very much like an upmarket japanese car from a few years back. Nothing wrong with it, just not to my liking. The part that stuck out to me, that I didn't really care for, what the glass from the B pillar back. The whole thing just doesn't seem to flow that well from the B pillar back to me, but again, that's just my personal observation and opinion. Front pics, and I haven't seen one in the flesh yet, but the sedan seems to flow a much better. The back end of the current C seems to match the overall styling off the car much better, the rear of the E looks a bit like an after thought. What I'd really love, it to see Mercedes put their shooting brake concept car based on the new E into production. Yummy!! I was hearing some noise from the compressor, I thought the belt was reasonable tight (based on deflection under finger pressure) and I did not think it sounded like belt chirp. But looking at it I could see the belt was flopping around between the two pullys. I tightened it some more and now it runs quietly. I guess the "finger pressure flex" check for belt tightness can be deceptive with short belts like the AC compressor uses. You learn something new everyday. I'd presumed that OpenCL was a mistype for OpenGL but before I said anything I googled it Similar but not the same. Anyway I wouldn't get too hung up on getting extra power for video editing, unless somebody in your family is going to go pro on this machine its just not worth it. I was editing video on a 400Mhz G4 not all that long ago just sometimes you have to wait while it renders, not the end of the world. The crappy Intel video card in the Mac Mini will make it somewhat unsuitable for video but the average person putting their home videos together will never notice. Oh, SLI... Not required. Dubious advantage to all but the highest end gamers. I don't think Final Cut takes full advantage of it anyway. I know all apps will get some advantage from SLI but to get the full monty the app has to be specifically written to utilize it. I haven't used FCP in quite awhile but I haven't heard of it being used. FCP is one of our competitors so I try to at least keep an eye on whats happening. For what its worth I'm finishing up this dance studio video on my HP XW8000 which is 4 generations old. Granted its got 3GB of RAM and a 512MB video card but the dual 2.8Ghz processors are slower than the core duo 2.x (I forget exactly what it is) in my laptop. The only time its an issue is when I need to render which makes for a good time to go get coffee. I'm using the desktop system because its hooked to the tv. Final edits MUST be proofed on a television. Good thing too, I'm finding one camera (of three) was having trouble with its autofocus and occasionally drifts ever so slightly out of focus. It was hard to tell on the computer monitor even at full screen on the TV its pretty obvious. -Curt Date: Sun, 28 Jun 2009 10:33:48 -0400 From: Ed Booher Subject: Re: [MBZ] OT: Which Apple should I buy? [MBZ] Vacuum frustration
79 300TD, I have had the vac pump apart like 4 times. Today, took off the cover plate, checked to make sure the (new) diaphragm was moving, it was. (The old diaphragm was fine too, but put a new one on just in case.) Took the valve cover off and checked the (new) one-way valves, they seem to be OK and in correctly. (The old ones seemed OK too, but replaced them, just to be sure.) Put it all back together, and still gettting huffing and puffing at idle rpm, and only 5in vac at anything else. All the hoses seem to be OK, even checking right at the main vac line coming right out of the pump. It is pushing air into the air cleaner, sucking air from the vac side, but not enough and not at idle. I can't figure this out, there really isn't much of anything else to go bad or not work. This problem just came on suddenly some time ago, I have been fooling with it now and again trying to see what is wrong. The only thing I can think of is that the little gasket in the valve cover plate is not sealing well, but it seems OK too. Maybe I'll check that again, just to be sure. This is making me crazy. Re: [MBZ] OT: Which Apple should I buy?
Hi Ed, You wrote: You can perform video editing on any of the MacBook line, but with the Pro's that have the Dual Video Card and Snow Leopard including OpenCL for borrowing unused GPU cycles for apps and Grand Central to truly make use of more than one processor, the Pro's with the second, far more power hungry video card, are designed for intensive video editing. As has been noted in earlier posts, however, there are true professionals still using the PowerBook G4 for video editing. So even the MacBook, with it's NVIDIA GPU, is going to give you a good video editing platform. However, the cheaper last year Mini with integrated Intel GMA950 GPU, not so much. The GMA was for office applications and light 3d acceleration. True hard core video editing slows it way down. In fact I have a video app I can't even use on the Mini, though can on a G5, simply because of the video card and not the CPU. So if you are going to want to do a lot of home movie / DV type editing, MacBook. If you are just doing old digital photo / analog scanned photo touch up, you don't need the power of the faster GPU's. --- G: I just now checked the Apple refurb website and the plastic case MacBook for $749 Ed mentions (see below) that was there this morning is gone; nothing left but aluminum case MacBooks for a higher price, of course. I'll keep checking. --- Yeah, that's the trouble with the refurbs. A lot of times they are only a very few in number, and go quick. But if you are patient and on top of it, you can get a great deal. The more you say, the more it seems you'd be much better served with a MacBook, or MacBook Pro and setting it up as a desktop so you have portability when you need it, but the power to deal with large media files on a regular basis. The Mini is great for Internet users and office apps, typing papers, doing research, etc. My wife uses the Mini to play a lot of World of Warcraft, and now that I can't use my video app (BoinxTV,) it looks like I'm going to have to move up to a MacBook myself. Also, on the note of Boinx, I picked it up from a site called MacHeist ( http://www.macheist.com) if you do get a Mac, and love it, I can not recommend MacHeist enough. About once a year they set up a lot of fake websites, and partner with other Mac software providers, then you have to perform logic tasks to track down a "spy" leaving clues in the system. With each task you complete, you unlock an Application. Then, when everything is said and done, they release the MacHeist Bundle (which you don't have to play their game to purchase.) This year I paid $49 and received iSale, (an eBay app that lets you create an auction locally with a point and click interface, then single click to "Go" and start the auction on eBay itself) Picturesque, (which you'd probably like, it's a good little photo touch up program) Souschef, (Recipe Database) World of Goo, (Cute little game) PhoneView, (great if you have an iPhone or iPod Touch, let's you manipulate data directly on the device) LittleSnapper, (I admit, haven't used this much, kind of like an iPhoto database app I think) Acorn, (a bit more powerful photo manipulator, editor) Kinemac, (3D Presentation software) WireTap Studio, (This year the bundle was worth this alone, if it is playing on your Mac, WireTap can capture the audio. Ergo, internet radio and streaming music, click, saved) BoinxTV, (Real Time TV Studio, Multiple Camera Input. If you want to produce an internet "TV" show, you need this app) Delicious Library, (Use your digital camera to snap a shot of an items barcode, then let the Library add it to your database. Great for insurance claims. "Here's everything I owned.") Times, (RSS News Reader app) The point is, for the price of most regular software packages, or a good game, I got a bucket load of software. EdB -- I'll keep checking the Apple refurb site for a MacBook or MacBook Pro with dual video cards and Snow Leopard. I assume that OpenCL and Grand Central are programs available from Apple. Re: [MBZ] This is the car I lust over, exact color and all, love it, too bad they are asking way too much
Kaleb, Not sure they are asking too much if it is as advertised and not rusty. I was afraid you'd say they want $10K. I realize you would have to really lust for it and not be worried about resale. My lust mobile are the 123 coupes-any nice ones are now bringing 10K on e-bay. My only comment on this car is that my 79 240D (The Green Goddess was this color.) and everyone I know loved it-esp. people who liked th 70's. My wife loved the color, too. But I hated it but it was gift. All taste. Dwight Dwight E. Giles, Jr. 1978 240D 4 speed. 218K miles. 1979 240D- auto -250K + miles. (SOLD). 1990 300D 2.5t 160K miles. Autozone customers? I bought a white box plastic water outlet for a GM 2.4 Twin Cam last year. The 12 year old factory part was breaking up and leaking my coolant out. I needed one right now, and the only places open were the dealer ($33, that's more than list) and A-zone ($15 for pure shite). Given some time, I would have rather ordered Delco online for $17. I didn't realize at the time that the white box was pure shite, and the part that held the o-ring was too small to reliably seal. Every time it got under 40 degrees at night, I lost half my coolant. When warm, the part expanded and sealed. Needless to say, I now try very hard not to frequent the store that had that piece of crap for their only in stock version of that somewhat critical piece of plastic.
