Hi Richard,
Flexx Boots require a $300 tool but the boots themselves are
only about $25. Supposed to be a quick and simple job; no
press or other special tool required.

Or use a funnel or cone and skip the $300 air-powered tool.

Hi Phillip,
I saw the illustrations about using a cone but a quick search didn't turn up
a place on the 'net to buy a cone.

Roll in a new chain and replace the upper right tensioner rail NOW
before the rail gets broken by the chain slap and the chunk falls
down and snaps the chain, unless you WANT to do a valve job.

Check stretch every 30,000 miles and replace at 4 degrees.

I teach the youngsters to drive in the late '60s pickup with the
big four speed. Clutch like a leg press. Granny first gear
makes any hill easy. Noisy. Tough.

After that, they can drive anything short of a truck with a
RoadRanger, twin stick transmission, or air brakes.

tensioner? Anyone able to get me the pdf for that job? (1985 380SL)

Daughter's Sl makes quite a clatter at startup at the front of the
right bank. It only lasts a second. Sounds like a tensioner leaking
down to me. Anybody got a better idea? ~130k on the car. Chain is

Re: [MBZ] Get rid of Gump?

2009-08-31 Thread Redghost
I made my offer. Gump or his own wallet. SWMBA is soft in the head
and will no doubt allow him to use a real car. I felt Gump was a
better education than just letting him drive.

Would learn proper car care. Built better than new cars, without the
safety crutches. Everybody needs to know how to drive stick. Gump is
too slow to get him into trouble with racing. Slow enough to allow
him time to think it through before executing stupid moves. No stereo
to distract him from driving. Not a Mommy and Daddy love me car he
would just have no respect for anyway. Not cool enough car to lead to
stupid stunts. And the back seat is bigger than a Geo's

There would be no payments, we do cash for cars. This entails a huge
hit to the stack under the mattress. It would increase the insurance
portion though. Another car with comprehensive would replace the
rolling turd that is Gump. Also additional cost of having dork boy
getting access to two nice cars. Cleaning up the sticky stuff from
the back seat. Leather and cloth are bad. MB-Tex=good

I'm such a New Englander. Our conversation would end with "its my
dammed car and I'll spend on it what I please." which works well
considering I'm the primary breadwinner in our house.

Which reminds me I need to go finish installing the trim around the
new stereo in Dory. Don't tell my wife but the old one hadn't
actually failed, the plug had come off the blasted fader thing in
the console (again!). I was fooled because the PO had direct wired
the left front speaker leading me to believe the entire right
channel was dead.
I direct wired the other front speaker in process of figuring it out
which gives me 4 discrete channels. This unit supports USB playback
so 4 channels might be fun to play with.

Re: [MBZ] Get rid of Gump?

2009-08-31 Thread Redghost
Went onto bimby and priced what I could recall I was told would be
attacked. Remember, this is a 37 year old car and only had the tie
rods replaced in that time, IIRC. Bill came to $1190.00

Springs need removed and either cut down or replace. Seems with a
shock replacement, the springs were changed to a sport or heavy duty
type. I was thinking I had to replace rear springs to get it level,
because it drives uphill. Shop foreman pointed out that the rears
were normal high, it was the fronts that were funky. We looked at the
dozen cars on site and they all sat like Gump in the rear, but not the
vato/beaner sprung front end.

The seattle comment is pricing, not rust induced. The control arm
part is from prior damage from a wreck. Gump seems to have a bunch of
body work been done. Twice smacked in the rear, once (at least) on
pass front end. That is where the springs/shocks/ and arms scrape
together.

I can see control arms if they got bent or otherwise
seriously damaged, but springs? That's a fair portion
of that estimate. Seattle is not part of the rust belt.

Upper ball joints in a 107 are fairly easy. I've done
those, and a 201's only ball joint. No others, yet.

For some reason, it seems to me that it wanted to be an XKE and failed. Too
little hood aand too much cabin gives you a car that makes the four seater XKE
look sporty.

Re: [MBZ] [Daveslist] 140 CD

2009-08-31 Thread Dave M.
There is a W140 DVD, but I do not know if it's any easier to use than the
WIS. And, I'm not sure if it's currently available from MBNA (they are in
the process of re-doing some of their CD- and DVD-based service manuals).
For engine work, just use the M119 manual on the W124 CD. The 500E has
basically the same engine as the 500SEL.

I forgot to mention I have plenty of good used coolers around here.

Mitch Haley wrote:

Curt,

Have you considered an aftermarket oil cooler? Just a thought.

I would have to check, but I had a chance to get a 240D cooler
practically free a couple of years ago, I don't know if I bought it or
not. I know I bought the diff and axles off that car.

Either the fittings were too corroded and the threads came off with
the nut, or some ham-fisted moron twisted them out of the cooler tubs.
The latter cannot happen if you put a wrench on the fitting in the
cooler, another wrench on the nut, situate them so that squeezing the
wrenches together loosens the connection, and then squeeze. It worked
easily on my 23 year old 300SD, but that car had apparently spent its
entire life in Georgia and Florida before I bought it and changed the
hoses in 2002. Salt sprayed fittings might be a different matter.

Re: [MBZ] Block off oil cooler?

2009-08-31 Thread Kaleb C. Striplin
I would say find a new mechanic. I have SEVERAL cars in the back with
both locked up motors, and motors with major knocks and problems from
doing just that thing. Does not take long at all either. Not a very
smart idea at all.

Curt Raymond wrote:

My 240D is at the Indy's today getting motor mounts and oil cooler lines (I
have zero time lately...). He of course ruined the cooler getting the old lines
off (didn't we just talk about this) but he'd suggested up front that it was
probably the cooler that was leaking anyway so I was prepared to put a cooler
in.
Apparently goo used coolers are pretty much not available around here because they stick
to the lines like mine has. My Indy suggests sealing the lines at the oil filter by
cutting off the hose, inserting a ball bearing and then soldering the line shut. He says
that on a 240D in New England the oil cooler doesn't do a whole lot. Considering most
people reply with "240Ds have oil coolers?" I guess I agree with his idea. In
fact considering its completely reversible (he's only ruining a line thats already
ruined) I've told him to go ahead, if at some point I come upon a good cooler I'll put it
back to stock...

Comments? All I really care about is eliminating the oil leak...

-Curt

Chris Bangle had very little to do with the design of the Z3.

And the coupe is ferociously powerful in M trim, ridiculously
tail-happy at speed, and both produced and sold in very limited
numbers. Thus ensuring its status as a future collectible.

I can think of few better ways to invest $17K than this one, for instance:

Roger, perhaps you should look up "belle laide."

Re: [MBZ] Mac battery warranty question.

2009-08-31 Thread ernest breakfield

which Mac?
exactly what time frame are we talking about?
i don't see anything about which Mac it is, or how long he's had it,...

before doing anything, though, he should go through the information
available on battery conditioning on the Apple website. he might want to
start here:

http://www.apple.com/batteries/notebooks.html
after that, it's time to exercise his AppleCare support and give
them a call. i've seen all kinds of things come up, including ditching
installed software to revert to previous versions, etc.,... make it
*their* problem.
(working for Apple gives one a strange insight; let's say 'never buy
an Apple without AppleCare' and leave it at that.)

[MBZ] BMW cars and motos (was: Re: Damn! Update)

2009-08-31 Thread ernest breakfield
wish that was still true about their motos,... while it may have been in
the past, it hasn't seemed to have been the case for several years now,
at least, but they're still trying hard to coast on that lingering
reputation.

Got a call from the Indy. He rigged up a hose to bypass the oil cooler rather
than just blocking it off. Probably a better system... Hopefully the car will
now use a lot less oil, woot...

For what it's worth,

180 degrees F = 82 degrees C

95 C = 203 F

Now finally, BMW is getting it's style act together with Bangle gone and
the NEW Z3 looks pretty good even though it will never be a Boxster.

If you do video work - YES!

The waveform monitor is effectively a level meter for video.

The vector scope is a color meter - both tint and saturation.
Not as useful in general, but I wish I had one.

Re: [MBZ] Mac battery warranty question.

2009-08-31 Thread LWB250
Keep in mind that there is a small processor in the battery pack that "talks"
to any outside connections. It's the culprit for identifying the condition of
the battery, keeping track of charge/discharge cycles, etc.

Over time this gets out of calibration, which can result in erroneous readings.
That being the case, the battery can be perfectly fine, but if the controller
says it's not, you're not doing anything with it, like it or not.

On the support page for Mac notebook batteries there is a link to the proper
procedure for recalibration. I would highly advise that you try this at least
once, and possibly twice if the battery has never been recalibrated.

I've started treating mine with acetone/ATF mix in preparation for
changing the lines. It really seems to be wicking into the fittings
nicely. I'll report on the results when I have them.

(I have zero time lately...). He of course ruined the cooler getting the
old lines off (didn't we just talk about this) but he'd suggested up

prepared to put a cooler in.
Apparently goo used coolers are pretty much not available around here
because they stick to the lines like mine has. My Indy suggests sealing
the lines at the oil filter by cutting off the hose, inserting a ball
bearing and then soldering the line shut. He says that on a 240D in New
England the oil cooler doesn't do a whole lot. Considering most people
reply with "240Ds have oil coolers?" I guess I agree with his idea. In
fact considering its completely reversible (he's only ruining a line

Well, not that long. There was a period earlier this year where I did
not drive it for maybe a month or so. And it was sitting outside during
that time.

That's actually when I started noticing brake problems, initially I
thought it was just normal surface rust on the rotors but it never
cleared up.

Now I get the original message. I'm not sure how the plumbing runs, I might feel
better putting a loop of hose on the two pipes coming out of the filter housing.
(cut off the original hoses from the pipes, and then have a hydraulic shop put
in a new hose connecting the inlet pipe to the outlet pipe) That way the oil
circulation stays the same, but cooling doesn't happen.

I'll be in the barn later this afternoon, will look for the cooler, but don't

Well after accepting defeat at trying to find a rear caliper locally on
a Sunday, I moved on to the fronts.  BOTH calipers had rusted, siezed
inboard pistons.  And looking at the front rotors they seem to be going
the way of the rears (look OK on the front side but badly rusted on the
inboard surface (probably because the pistons are siezed and they're not
getting any braking action on that side).

So Monday it's going to be an order for new front rotors and calipers
from Rusty.  Fronts mean I need to repack the front bearings... ugh.
I'm thinking I might as well replace that other rear caliper too, all
the calipers are the same age (I was thinking two years but it might be
three) just to avoid problems.

I've never had calipers sieze up like that before on any other car,
foreign or domestic.  Wondering why these all went bad so quickly.

Have you considered an aftermarket oil cooler? Just a thought.

I think that your car probably will not miss the oil cooler; I think
that Marshall said that a typical U.S. driven diesel benz probably had
the original fill oil in the cooler because very few drivers exercised
their engines hard enough to get the oil hot enough to open up the oil
cooler thermostat.

I wonder what the opening temp is?

Hi Gary,
I put two used half-axles on the car; one from Kaleb that's very good; and
one bought locally that looks borderline. Kept the leaking half axles and
will probably fix them with Astoria Flexx boots and gun when needed. The
boots are relatively cheap and the gun is about $300 (see below).
Considering the cost of freight nowadays, the Flexx gun might be a good

Well I thought I'd have a quick job of changing my brake pads this
afternoon.  On the passenger rear brake the inboard piston is siezed in
the caliper.

So just to get this done before Monday, I'm tempted to try AutoZone or
Pep Boys tomorrow to see if they have one.  The one on there now is one
I ordered from Rusty, and it lasted less than two years so I'm sorta
thinking a rebuilt caliper is a rebuilt caliper, does it matter much
where I get it?
