The fact that there was no mention of his Pancreatic cancer is odd. The
tables say that 95% of those so diagnosed are gone in less than a year. Perhaps
he is in the 5%,

Cute. The writing in the ad reminds me of a Bulgarian co-worker.

But, $99 for a piece of property seems really reasonable. Just make sure

Re: [MBZ] Oscilloscope

2009-09-09 Thread Jim Cathey
I need to figure out if I am generating a 140hz signal with an antique
of a scope. Scope does not have any fancy setting like time. It is a
navy relic. How do I go about measuring the frequency? I have a signal
showing 3 cycles with 100hz sweep. Do I need a better scope?

Better is easier, but not absolutely necessary. How do you know
it's a 100Hz sweep? But the completely uncalibrated sweeps are
difficult to use for frequency. Usually the sweep speeds are
in steps, X seconds/division, and you just count the number
of divisions and multiply/divide. They're not uncalibrated.
But if it's an unmarked knob you'd only normally use that
for waveform quality.

140 Hz is very close to C#3 on a piano. Compare it by ear?
Feed signal to a tuner? (Cheap frequency counter.) My Fluke
DMM does Hz on AC.

Re: [MBZ] brake job nightmare

Thought I had the same problem on 123 calipers. Stuck a large screwdriver
in and levered the piston further into the caliper. After that the pad on
that side was tight but it went in with a little tapping and repositioning.
The other side seemed to be stuck and didn't want to move with the
screwdriver so; IIRC I stuck in a 3/8" breakover handle with the end cocked
90 degrees and twisted it with a crescent wrench. It broke loose and
retracted and I was able to get the pad in.

I don't know about 1 (but you can make anything fit anywhere I guess)
but I recall someone saying the 300D engine weighs 600some lb, so I
would go with the bigger stand, esp with that cheap Chinese stuff from
HF (as an engineer I like some extra margin).

Re: [MBZ] Two Questions

2009-09-09 Thread Dillon, Meade M CIV SPAWARSYSCEN-ATLANTIC, 53310
Bruce,

1. I'm sure it's possible, but not sure how easy/hard. If you have the donor
car and recipient next to each other, it will go better. I think that the oil
filter from the '82 motor will fit on the '74 motor, and that would be a key
thing to keep. I imagine that you'll need to swap the engine mount arms, and
figuring out the exhaust may require some work. Wiring and throttle linkage
will also be a lot of fun. Most people go the other way, putting a more modern
engine into the older body, because the reward for the work is greater.

2. Get the 1000 lb lift, so you have the capability for 300D engines. Engine
and tranny together for an OM 617.952 is about 800 lbs, I believe. A 616 or
615 with a manual tranny will certainly be less than 750 lbs but what if you
want to upgrade engines in the future?

full Nixon outfit, rubber mask, Salvie Army old blue suit, white shirt,

next to a coupla cops in their car, who looked over, I gave them the

out of the car, which caused all kinds of hooting and hollering and

[MBZ] Shifty behavior

2009-09-09 Thread Dillon, Meade M CIV SPAWARSYSCEN-ATLANTIC, 53310
Today while going to lunch, my car ('87 300TD with 313k miles) started a
new thing. It will hold 2nd and/or 3rd gear too long or not up-shift at
all if more than 1/2 throttle is applied. I checked my records and the
last transmission service was about 26k miles ago, so I'm going to start
with that. I'm hoping that the Mobil 1 ATF has loosened enough crud to
clog the filter and so the pressure has dropped enough to affect the
shifting. Is that thinking sound?

The cat was under the car by '78, if not '77. The '79 has more emmision
controls, therefore less power than the '78. The timing chain is not an
issue in the 450 engine, just the 380 which came in the last half of' '80
(?).

[MBZ] Two Questions

2009-09-09 Thread B Dike
Hi All,

A couple of questions:

1. I have a W1982 123 240D that needs a motor,  and I have a OM615 from a 1974
W115 240D.  Is there any possible way to fit the older W115 motor into the

2.  I'm going to Harbor Freight to buy an engine stand.  Is the 700 lb stand
adequate for MB diesel motors, or is the 1000 lb stand preferred?

Thanks,

In that vintage, enjoy the Evil Chrysler ACC From Hell in all its glory.
Softtop condition is a special expense.
Subframe cracking, but many have been fixed and many don't do it, but as
you've heard the 'recall' is still active.

Convertibles often get sun-fried, so interior condition is an issue, but
it's pretty obvious to the eye. Seat springs are essentially
unavailable, so mashed seats must be fixed 'the hard way'. Sunvisors
take a particular beating, and are stunningly expensive. I have PP's

lost, about $200 for the full set last I checked. The four black

Benz wants $420 EACH for them!

The usual sick electronics of any vintage MB apply.
Nothing special there, though. HVAC blower motor is easy to lubricate,
or replace. Vacuum pods may require dash removal, which is a perfect
time to put a plastic dash cap over the (likely) cracked dash. IMHO,
buy a big tube of high-temp RTV and glue it down SOLIDLY. I've tried
the instructions, and they can get loose done that way. Clamping is the
issue, but with the dash out you can do it.

My $2k 380SL is currently up to about $4500, and I can be a right cheap
SOB. It has new upholstery and a soft top (not yet installed) though,
and except for a few remaining problems is actually sorting out pretty
well.
It's my non-winter daily driver, and has been for two years. Full

Re: [MBZ] Macs looking for a home Was: first impressions on snow leopard

2009-09-09 Thread Redghost
I donated a bunch of my older macs to the kids' school because at the
time they were running Apple IIs in the classroom and I had a stack of
IIci and IIsi, as well as the Mac II. Think I gave them two dozen,
with monitors for most.

Now they purchase a dozen macbooks at a time each year, and no more
donating for them. Increased tuition and begging () each year.

All are available for free if you pay the shipping (or pick it up).
Just send me your mailing address off-list, with a specific request.

I think the II Si was the first mac without a builtin monitor

you want it. I think it came with one of the first Mac types with
the video I/O card from the factory. Very fancy (expensive)
monitor in its day!

Also have a 7200, G3 Beige and Blue/white Macs, along with a Wall
street laptop with OS 10 on it, looking for homes if anyone is
interested. Pay the freight, and they are yours! Oh, and I have
one other, can't remember the model, but it is also an 030, the
small one. I used it for a headless print server for quite a
while.

My favorite old app is print shop for the Apple II. You could do
stuff with it that later Winders and Mac versions could not do.
Love those dot matrix graphics. Now it is a "retro" look. A step

Aha, Jim, now you've hit on the _real_ reason to buy trailing-edge
hardware... it's not about saving money so much as it's about
being

able to run old games.

Sometimes I wish I'd kept my Mac Plus around just to play Dark

(Yes, I know I could do it though emulation, but it's just not the
same.)

Re: [MBZ] CL FIND OF THE DAY $2K '79 450SL

2009-09-09 Thread Jim Cathey

Short of that (and besides rust and maint. Records) what else
does one look for when considering an SL?

In that vintage, enjoy the Evil Chrysler ACC From Hell in
all its glory. Softtop condition is a special expense.
Subframe cracking, but many have been fixed and many don't
do it, but as you've heard the 'recall' is still active.

Convertibles often get sun-fried, so interior condition
is an issue, but it's pretty obvious to the eye. Seat
springs are essentially unavailable, so mashed seats
must be fixed 'the hard way'. Sunvisors take a particular
beating, and are stunningly expensive. I have PP's
aftermarket ones, they're OK but not as nice as the
real deal. The chromed plastic seat hinge covers
are always getting broken off and lost, about $200 for
the full set last I checked. The four black plastic
interior mates to the bottom pieces are unobtainium,
since Ma Benz wants $420 EACH for them!

The usual sick electronics of any vintage MB apply.
Nothing special there, though. HVAC blower motor
is easy to lubricate, or replace. Vacuum pods
may require dash removal, which is a perfect time
to put a plastic dash cap over the (likely) cracked
dash. IMHO, buy a big tube of high-temp RTV and
glue it down SOLIDLY. I've tried the instructions,
and they can get loose done that way. Clamping is
the issue, but with the dash out you can do it.

My $2k 380SL is currently up to about $4500, and I can
be a right cheap SOB. It has new upholstery and a soft
top (not yet installed) though, and except for a few
remaining problems is actually sorting out pretty well.
It's my non-winter daily driver, and has been for two
years. Full story:

http://userweb.windwireless.net/~jimc/SL2.html

Upshot? Paint, upholstery, rust. Those are the big ticket
issues, everything else is straightforward to deal with.

2009-09-09 Thread Rich Thomas
My buddy has a 79 450SL, he has done some niggling little repairs on it
(and I have done some for him). The subframe was the biggest problem,
his mech was going to charge him $2k or something, I went there and
pointed out that Benz would do that under a recall, he hemmed and hawwed
and yeah he had heard something about that...yeah right. Anyway the
dealer did it for him, and some other stuff at the same time, charged
him a few $100 for all of it, which he thought was a good deal and I
agreed. I think the timing chains or something are an issue? He has
not ever opened his motor, something like 140k on it, runs great. Was
having some issues a coupla years ago, I suggested a tuneup and some
ignition work, he had that done and back to running very strong. It is
tight to work in there though, after working on the TD.

His car is in primo condition, gorgeous.
