Reminds me of a long time ago when a "small" engine problem reared it's
ugly head and I made a forced landing in I-5 south of Eugene Oregon, the OSP
trooper spent some time paging through his little book looking for something
he could ticket me for. Never found one.

We thought of that; and, of course, we'll never know; but the neurologist

Re: [MBZ] Biobor

2009-09-18 Thread Scott Ritchey
My 82 300 SD gets little use these days so I keep a bottle of Biobor in the
trunk and add the specified amount at every fillup. It doesn't take much so
the bottle lasts a while. The plastic bottle has a gizmo that lets you
squeeze the required amount into a small chamber to pour in the tank so it's
pretty convenient. I generally get it from West Marine.

Years ago I purchased a quart bottle of additive at West Marine to kill
the growth (actually we're talking about mold and fungus, not algae). I
think I've used maybe five doses in three different cars. The bottle
may be expired now. Marshall (USMC) and LT Don (CG) both chastised me

If you read the page, it says Biobor is available in 5 gallon or 55
gallon drums.

A pint of the stanadyne stuff was enough to keep several diesels happy
for several years. How may gallons will a 5 gallon can treat, and how
many years does it take you to use that many gallons of
fuel? I use between 1000 and 2500 gallons a year. That is roughly
20k to 50 k a year, depending on the VHickle. But you don't need to
treat every tank. Just once in a while in the summer or if you get a
load of bad fuel. So a pint is good for several years. 5 gallons would
probably last me 100 years.

Both the cruise and AC are still working fine on that car. Thanks much!

It's my other 300SDL that has problems. It just turned 380,000 miles
with the original transmission. Probably about time for a rebuild
anyway. Before I tear into that, I have to replace the rear wheel
bearings on the Subaru - that's what I use as a floater when one of
the others is out of service.

She did have to have neck surgery but not directly because of the accident.
A month or two before the accident we were driving to the beach. She said,
"My mind went blank." "Where are we?" I told her she should see a
neurologists, but being a nurse, she wouldn't do it.
After the accident she said she didn't remember approaching the
interesection, so we thought she might have had another "black out" which
may have been the reason for running the red light.
We told the orthopedist and he ordered xrays and later a contrast media
spine xray. A bad disk had almost completely shut off the flow of
cerebrospinal fluid to the spine which caused pressure on the brain.

Laminectomies were done on two discs and she had no more blackouts.

She had had a neck injury during nurses training which may have been the
cause of the bad disks.

Oh, yes Mercedes ACC is wonderful. For ever 3 hours I spend working on
the ACC system in my 110 degree garage I can drive an hour in comfort
without having to adjust anything! Truly luxurious.

I have to replace a component in the ACC on my 190DT about as often as I
have to adjust the manual hot/cold slider on my Volvo 740 Turbo. I think
the MBZ ACC system is more complex than the entire Volvo.

just using the defroster would take care of that, since the AC is

If you use Gorilla Glue, it will NOT come off again.

If you think you might ever want to remove the trim in the future, the 3M is
probably a better choice. I think it
stays sticky, holds well but can be removed with some effort.

As stated its probably one of the biggest PITA R&R out there. I'd rather

I've probably said this here before.
My sister failed to yield to a large Buick back in 1974 while driving her
husband's Gremlin. Speed limit was 65mph there IIRC. Got smacked right in the
driver's door. Car was nearly turned inside out. Floor on the ground and roof 6'
high. She was tossed around inside it like a rag doll. She broke the pelvic
girdle and I believe some ribs. No broken arms/legs I'm pretty sure. She claims
she survived that particular crash because she wasn't belted into the driver's
side of the car when it was obliterated. Her little dog (puppy) was between the
door and driver's seat IIRC. Not much left of the dog from what I heard.

This VW weighs 840 lbs.

A big car hit an Isetta from behind and it went airborne. Landed about a
quarter block away. Driver and passenger were not badly hurt. I wonder if
being "bounced" in a light car instead of absorbing the crash might be an
advantage?

Does it shift smoothly before and then start shifting rough when it started
running poorly?

If so, look for a vacuum leak - especially the little hose at the 12 o'clock

2009-09-18 Thread LarryT

Hi Don,
Checking all the things you suggest is probably the way to go - but
shortly after buying our '91 300D 2.5 (w/99k miles on it in 2006), it would
act similarly - but only immediately after a cold starts (<60F) and not
warmed up, so perhaps it's not the same. Mine turned out to be carbon
buildup - I used some stuff called Ferox that was supposed to loosen the
carbon - that along with my wife driving daily 100 mi round trips at 70 mph
cured the problem. Now it runs flawlessly like a new car!

How many mi are on it? was it driven often? at speed? for long
distances? as you know, diesels thrive on long distance / high speed.

On the way home today, about 3 miles from home, the '92 300D 2.5T lost
power

and would only hold 60 mph in third gear, pedal to the floor, spewing grey
smoke. Came to a stop light, it idled smoothly and normally. Accelerating
when it turned green, the car had little power, started knocking, and
running rough at 1600rpm. I could get it up to about 2100-2200rpmmax. Let
off the fuel and let it shift to the next higher gear, and it would slowly
accelerate up again, same as before.

When I got home, I opened the hood, expecting to find the pressure line to
the ALDA, etc. off - but it all looks to be in place. With no load,
rev'ing

the engine results in the shacking, missing, knocking, and lots of smoke
(grey) out the back. The smoke smells like raw Diesel.

Any ideas where to start trouble shooting?

If you use Gorilla Glue, it will NOT come off again.

If you think you might ever want to remove the trim in the future, the 3M is

If you find 4 deg or more of chain stretch, 'tis much easier to replace
the chain and all the rails now, and you can install an endless chain
vice one that needs a master link installed.

If you live in a cold climate, might be easier to install a new block
heater now.

Re-sealing the injection pump and the transmission also much easier now.

Re: [MBZ] 380SL timing chain project

2009-09-18 Thread Loren Faeth
I got pretty far with the project yesterday. I had hoped to finish
it, but that was not in the cards. Have to remove the alt bracket on
the right to expose the right head front face to remove rail
pins. On the left, the PS pump and the PS Pump mount have to come
off. I took some pictures of the mixed mode methods I used to pull
the pins. Got the engine to TDC#1. Marked the first plug wire for
each bank. Removed the cap. TDC#1 position leaves the rotor at the
12:30-1 position. Removed the bolt for the DIst. Pulled the dist,
observing the rotor position as the gear disengages. It is Just
about 12:00 position. Pulled the pins. Top rail, left bank was
broken, and the piece was visible.

Nother trip to HF, this time for 1/2" metric sockets and a spring
loaded clamp to remove the piece down in the head/block

Got the piece out. Trimmed the tail of the Left top new rail, to aid
in prevention of future failure by breaking off the tail.

Removed the tensioner. Determined the tensioner side has a banana
rail. I was shipped a short rail! OOPS! GAME OVER!

Called the Q man. He sent the right piece next day, So I hope to
have it today.

I tried to find the bottom pin for the banana rail. It is behind a
cap. The cap uses a 6mm allen wrench. Got the cap off. the pin is
hollow, and there is nothing to pull it with. Mr. Q didn't know the
way the banana rail was held in. So I called another resource. Mr.
Vernon at Mercedes Specialists of Seminary, MS was kind enough to
tell me the trick. He said take a ezout and tap it into the pin,
then pull on the ezout. I am waiting for the new rail before I pull that pin.

Nother trip to HF for a mirror and ezouts.

Wired the chain to the cam sprockets in 2 places for each
sprocket. marked the chain and sprocket for alignment. Checked to
see the cam mark and the cam tower marks lined up on each side, they
did, less the degrees of chain stretch. Removed the left sprocket to
allow removal of the lower rail. Replaced both rails on the left
side, using the trimmed one on top. removed right
sprocket. replaced left sprocket, but had to turn crank backwards 10
degrees to get the key to line up.

That is where i quit until the rail arrives.

PO (you reading this, Bob?) had the dealer install a used IP. The word from the
shop was that it idled fine and made no power, so they pronounced the new IP
bad. They put the old IP back on, and now it won't idle, likes to smoke, and
makes no power. I wonder it the mechanic botched something up and there was
nothing wrong with the replacement IP, it had plenty of power and no excessive
smoke before it went to the dealership.

When I went out to the lake a couple of weeks ago to drive it home to work on, I
couldn't generate enough torque to make it move after sitting in one place for a
couple of months. With the inch deep indentations under the tires, I probably
needed 10-20hp to get rolling and the engine couldn't do it. That is not normal.

I did make one new discovery a couple of weeks ago, the throttle linkage is
sticking. I'd floor it to try to make it move, then when I'd shift to park it
wanted to idle at 5,000rpm. Now I'm wondering (hoping) that the irregular idle
has something to do with the EGR or the sticky throttle linkage. OTOH, if
swapping IPs fixed the idle, there's probably something wrong with the original
IP, which is currently on the car. If I hadn't recently run out of spare cash,
I'd send the IP to Finland and order an intercooler. There's plenty of room
behind the grill, because somebody put a wrong generation hood on it somewhere
along the line and it puts the grill too far forward.

Mitch,

I'm in Charleston SC, about 5 hours from JAX; I think the LP would be
about a 15 to 20 hour drive?

Also, I avoid northern cars due to the rust issue, but thanks for
letting me know.

Stall at idle = an IP issue? Heard of a fellow that solved oil leak

gasket; rubber sheet made just enough contact with the rack to cause all

Aren't you up on Virginia or the Carolinas? Jax might be almost as far
from you as southern Michigan.
I'll give you a 2.5 for $1000 (what I paid for it) that you can drive
home on the freeway but is a major PITA to drive in traffic because it
likes to stall at idle. I was diverted off the freeway for construction
on the way home, had to go the entire length of Battle Creek's shopping
strip with 10x the normal traffic load on it (because the freeway
traffic was on the street), and by the time I got it home I was so
pissed at it I didn't want to mess with it.

Re: [MBZ] BAD 300D 2.5T

2009-09-18 Thread Dillon, Meade M CIV SPAWARSYSCEN-ATLANTIC, 53310
Somebody already mentioned this but I'll second; a failed EGR (in the
open position) can cause the type of smoke and power loss that you
describe. My first MB diesel came home that way, smoked like crazy and
could barely reach 60 mph on the flat, smoke smelled like raw fuel.
However, it was smooth with no knocking at all the RPM that it could
reach. I blocked off the EGR in an attempt to gain a little power and
suddenly I had a new car, which could reach an indicated top speed of
107 mph.

I'd start with the fuel filters, air leaks into fuel system, verify no
gasoline (or water) in the tank, then move to the more complex like EGR.

On the way home today, about 3 miles from home, the '92 300D 2.5T lost
power and would only hold 60 mph in third gear, pedal to the floor,
spewing grey smoke. Came to a stop light, it idled smoothly and
normally. Accelerating when it turned green, the car had little power,
started knocking, and running rough at 1600rpm. I could get it up to
about 2100-2200rpmmax. Let off the fuel and let it shift to the next
higher gear, and it would slowly accelerate up again, same as before.

When I got home, I opened the hood, expecting to find the pressure line
to the ALDA, etc. off - but it all looks to be in place. With no load,
rev'ing the engine results in the shacking, missing, knocking, and lots
of smoke
(grey) out the back. The smoke smells like raw Diesel.

Any ideas where to start trouble shooting?

If you recently fueled, then that is also an indication you may have
bad fuel. Smell the fuel. It may be gasoline or a gasoline mixture.
Both tank drivers and dissel car owners have been known to put
gasoline in the Dissel tank.

Such as my wife. The car ran, but badly. Would start OK and
then choke out unless the throttle were kept on.
