[MBZ] OT: now here is a chinese product i can happily endorse!

I picked up the tea habit when I was in Taiwan on a
business trip in '86 or thereabouts.  The one female
engineer (rather cute!) in the office took me to a
high-end tea supply shop where I got a lesson on oolongs,
which I found I liked.  Complete with instructions on how
to prepare it and taste it.  Tea there is somewhat like
wine here, many people know and appreciate the subtleties
of where/when it was grown.  The proprietor spoke no
English, and was sorting the dried leaves when we got
there.  Yen-yue said his shop was the first stop on
the chain of supply, and that his rejects went on down
to lesser suppliers, the crumbs eventually ending up in
tea bags.

I use Bigelow oolong, which these days we have to mail-order.
Stores have stopped carrying it in favor of various rind and
floor-crumb additives du jour.  (Persimmon/clove, or apple
core/asafoetida, that sort of thing.  I think they might still
carry one actual tea, I'm not sure.)  The Bigelow was the best
of the bagged stuff (crumby rejects!) I found, probably because
the pouch is foil-lined.  That's my treat on weekends.

At work I use one Lipton bag a day dropped into my cup, and I
never take it out.  (When sombody brings in a box of Tetley's
I use that instead.  Also I've used Red Rose, pretty much any
plain tea will do.)  The first cup or two are good and strong,
then it gets progressively weaker through the day.  Also more
nasty-tasting as the other oils leach out.  The cup sits on a
cupwarmer, and most of the day you could say that I'm only
drinking slightly flavored hot water.  At some point I just
stop 'cause it's icky, but that depends on how thirsty I am.
It doesn't really get icky until you've stopped the drinking
and refilling, and have let it sit for awhile.  This one-bag
rule controls the caffeine intake.

I'd like tea, please.  ...picking through the offered tray...
Umm, do you have any actual _tea_?  Often at these places I
end up with Lipton.

Proper tea in the UK and American markets disappeared when TV started  
running a couple short ads every half hour, and in the UK, when there  
was a few minute gap between shows (as they don't have ads like we  
do).  You can make a cup of crappy tea-bag tea in a couple minutes  
(boiling water on the bag, swish around a bit, toss bag, sip tea)  
while making proper tea in a pot takes too long to get back to the TV  
in time.


Rolled tea had completely vanished in the UK for a while -- don't  
know if that is still true, but hopefully the internet has done for  
tea what it has done for coffee, allowed small operations to sell  
nationally or internationally -- and it was very scarce in the US.   
We have always used gunpowder green tea in iced tea in the summer,  
and while it used to be quite common, has almost vanished.  Tea bag  
tea is crumbs, as noted, or worse, low grade tea chopped.  Mostly  
twigs and veins, quite nasty.  It has to chopped, as the leaves  
cannot expand and unroll, certainly not in the minute or so most  
people leave the bag in the water.  Proper tea gets a quick wash with  
boiling water to remove the bitterness and then a five minute or so  
steep, quite different (and much stronger flavor) than the cardboard  
in paper tea bags.


I prefer red teas myself (Irish Breakfast or Assam is the usual  
labeling here) rather than blacks, and greens are always good if  
somewhat less tea like for americans.  I've been on a coffee kick  
for the last few years since I found a supply of green coffee beans  
to roast at home.  Vastly better than store bought unless the store

[MBZ] Messed up 123 glove box door liner and latch

Does anyone want to part with a spare plastic glove box door liner for a
w123 (1985 300td)?   I cannot get the door to close because the latching
mechanism is buggered irretrievably.  I need  the plastic  liner (123 689
0583) and latching tongue (123 689 0132), preferably still connected and
functional so i can just pop it in.  I will pay for shipping + a modest
price for a functional assembly.

At the plant you can see the leaves come in, they let them dry for a 
while then they chop them up and do some other stuff (get out the stems, 
etc.) on this little line they have set up.  Then the conveyor takes 
them to a drying room, where it is left for varying times and temps to 
get the different types (green, darker, etc.).  They have it for sale in 
the shop, different kinds and flavors (a nice peach, and a governor 
gray).  There is a type called American Classic

that is boxed in paper tea bags they sell at the grocery stores around 
here, and they also have some in the little silk bags (more expensive).  
The American Classic bagged stuff  is a blend with other Bigelow teas, 
and is a bit more toward the Lipton flavor, a bit more pungent and fresh 
tasting.  Makes excellent iced tea.


You should order some from them (the American Classics in the loose cans 
are good, straight from the plantation, I have those now -- I don't know 
about the Bigelow brand), see if you like it.  I get over there 
occasionally (it is probably about 2 miles away as the crow flies, but 
to get there I have to drive about 20 miles!).  The shrimp boat docks 
are over there too, I make a trip occasionally to get tea and shrimp 
right off the boats.

I just enjoy it, not sure how it would stand up to a connoisseur tasting.

Being so close to the Canucks, here in Seattle, we just mosey on up  
and visit Murchie's Tea Room.  Vast walls and floor space jammed with  
teas of all shades and flavors.  Don't drink enough of the stuff to  
make it worth hauling home, since it ages and loses the brightness of  
flavour I prefer in my cup.  So, just have it as a treat in Canuckland.

I have a tin of that (twinings,loose) sitting on my desk in my cube at  
work, next to my old Krups Novo compact... My home machine isn't much  
newer; a Rancilio Audrey (upgraded with a commercial portafilter)


For tea I either drink that, roobios, or chamomile (great for GI  
woes...)


For espresso, these days it's either LaVazza Dek or Qualita Oro... I  
feel like I need to sneak my shots of espresso when I am home so  
that my son won't mooch them!

Subject: [MBZ] OT: now here is a chinese product i can happily endorse!


I picked up the tea habit when I was in Taiwan on a
business trip in '86 or thereabouts.  The one female
engineer (rather cute!) in the office took me to a
high-end tea supply shop where I got a lesson on oolongs,
which I found I liked.  Complete with instructions on how
to prepare it and taste it.  Tea there is somewhat like
wine here, many people know and appreciate the subtleties
of where/when it was grown.  The proprietor spoke no
English, and was sorting the dried leaves when we got
there.  Yen-yue said his shop was the first stop on
the chain of supply, and that his rejects went on down
to lesser suppliers, the crumbs eventually ending up in
tea bags.

I use Bigelow oolong, which these days we have to mail-order.
Stores have stopped carrying it in favor of various rind and
floor-crumb additives du jour.  (Persimmon/clove, or apple
core/asafoetida, that sort of thing.  I think they might still
carry one actual tea, I'm not sure.)  The Bigelow was the best
of the bagged stuff (crumby rejects!) I found, probably because
the pouch is foil-lined.  That's my treat on weekends.

At work I use one Lipton bag a day dropped into my cup, and I
never take it out.  (When sombody brings in a box of Tetley's
I use that instead.  Also I've used Red Rose, pretty much any
plain tea will do.)  The first cup or two are good and strong,
then it gets progressively weaker through the day.  Also more
nasty-tasting as the other oils leach out.  The cup sits on a
cupwarmer, and most of the day you could say that I'm only
drinking slightly flavored hot water.  At some point I just
stop 'cause it's icky, but that depends on how thirsty I am.
It doesn't really get icky until you've stopped the drinking
and refilling, and have let it sit for awhile.  This one-bag
rule controls the caffeine intake.

I'd like tea, please.  ...picking through the offered tray...
Umm, do you have any actual _tea_?  Often at these places I
end up with Lipton.

'91 3 years ago - would love to have a 98!


I wonder how build quality compares between the W124 and 98 300D?

Thanks for that info!

I also have a new WP  on the shelf.  I changed the T'stat when I bought the 
car as it was stuck open.   I was kind of thinking it was the pump seal 
too - your experience reinforces that opinion.


Was looking at changing the WP  but it looks like a lot of work.   ;-)  Just 
not in the mood...


I'll do an analysis of the oil to insure the head gasket is ok and keep an 
eye on the coolant level.

My guess is that you have a water pump seal weeping.  Most of my 603s have 
done this.  On the first one, I did replace the WP and it stopped.  On my 
current 603 300D, it has leaked since I got it. Massively over the winter 
when the car is stored.  No water on the floor ever.  The leak is slow 
enough that there is never a trace.  I ordered a new WP from Rusty the 
first spring, and it is still in the trunk.  Having a spare is good 
insurance that you won't need it.   I do add coolant from time to time, 
(and in the spring)  If the water pump was as easy to change as the OM 
621/615/616/617/M180 etc.  I would have changed it long ago.


It is a good idea to put in a new OE thermostat while you are in there, as 
it is a PITA otherwise.  Be sure to have a new oring for the thermostat 
housing before you start.  Penetrating oil on the Tstat housing bolts etc. 
Use neverseez on reassembly.

   What kind of lifespan do water pumps generally have?  It has 170K now 
and my wife puts about  600 mi. / mo. going to  from work.


   I have zero oil burning or leaking, no white smoke and it starts 
instantly without the blockheater at the end of the 1st pre-glow down to 
the mid teens.It also starts instantly when warm with no signs/smells 
of smoke.  IOW, no signs of a head gasket problem except for the missing 
coolant every other month.  All hoses were replaced


   No odor except the diesel from the leaking DVs.

   With all the noise shielding it's nearly impossible to see signs of a 
leak on the ground.


   Except for the clear coat lifting it's like a new car - everything 
perfectly clean, everything works and drives like new. One day I'll get 
energetic and repaint it.


   I'll send in a sample this week and see what the analysis says.

Head cracks will lead to coolant loss, but also hard cold starts with 
lots of white smoke and very rough running on startup.  White smoke 
smelling of glycol will persist until the engine warms up.


Coolant leaks from a bad head gasket are also known -- usually out the 
exhaust side.


CHEKC THE OIL FOR GLYCOL -- if here is any present, get this fixed pronto 
before you also take out the crank!

The cap on my exp tank was bad and I replaced it a few weeks ago - was 
hoping that might be causing the leak but no such luck.   As you said, they 
can look good but be bad.  When I examined the rubber seal I found it had 
come apart from the metal parts.   Naturally , after I bought one from Rusty 
I found a new one on my pegboard.

Yeah they do that too.  As someone else already mentioned, the radiator 
cap on the tank can look ok and cause problems.  If the coolant only goes 
down when you drive, look at the tank and cap.  If it goes down while 
setting, look at the WP, hoses etc.


I went through a rach of bad Radiator caps on Diesels until I bought new 
caps for all of them.  A few years ago Marshall or someone recomended 
replacing the rad caps every ___ years as a matter of PM. I never did.  I 
just replace them when there is a problem.  But the problems I had with 
the 300D will make me reconsider.  I may go to a 5 yr. replacement PM 
program.  Or, by then I may sell the car.  Who knows?



The mystery leak in my son's 603 300D turned out to be a crack in the
coolant tank just under a fitting on the side facing the front. Only saw 
it

when it got bad enough to see dripping under the car. Saw a small stream
squirting forward when up to temp and under pressure. Liquid steel cured 
it.

That's an early W210. All of the 210's have, or will have rust issues  
(such as bubbles popping in the middle of panels, nowhere near a chip  
or scratch). Beware the front spring perches (which have rusted off!),  
the blower motor regulator  (the redesigned one requires a redesigned  
blower motor, but I hear you can modify a W140 one to work...), the  
evaporator, which is known to rot out, and the glow plugs (which are  
known to snap off in the head).


That said, I have a pair of 99's (his und hers...), and they are  
nice... they already have the redesigned blower and a newer design  
evaporator (but not the latest design)... 98 and up are turbo/ 
intercooled (they are all 4 valve/cylinder DOHC, which necessitates  
the long snappish glow plugs...)


I think you may need to throw out your old impulse counter/blink box,  
since it won't work with the thing...

The ad says 1996. Normally aspirated 24v engine with variable intake tuning and 
EGR. The butterflies in the intake runners get gunked up and seize. There's also 
some fun with fuel fittings, and for some reason the glow plugs are often 
impossible to remove in one piece. I guess the body is OK, except during Spring 
Perch season.

Mercedes still does, in the G, M, GL, and R-Class.  MB sez MB Power 
Steering Fluid MB Part No. BQ 1 46 0001 or an approved Dexron III ATF 
The difference being that you pay more for the lack of red dye in the MB 
stuff.


The rest of the current lineup requires Pentosin CHF 11S, which fully 
synthetic, expensive, and definitely not ATF.

 I found a supply of green coffee beans to roast at home.  Vastly better than
 store bought unless the store is roasting in site.

 I need to get a supply of good tea.  I have to look on eBay and search the
 'net, as I'm sure there are suppliers of good grade tea at reasonable prices
 somewhere.  I have no trouble buying internationally via PayPal (I get lots
 of watches and fountain pens this way) from reliable sellers.

this is really of interest to me.  it's not about it being the best tea in
the world, just like it wasn't about yeungling competing with belgium's
finest handmades .  if it's as good as a major indian or english, i'd gladly
make the switch to the charleston tea.

hitherto, your major american tea brands just struck me as weak and
flavorless.  if i could have found a USA supermarket cheap tea i liked as
much as the foreign brands, i'd have used that instead.

i don't drink any kind of fancy drink.  i maybe add a little lemon or lime
to my tea, but otherwise nothing.  no sweetener.  no milk.  nothing.

i'll drink it hot in small doses, but large quantities are always consumed
over ice.

this is just my own trip though, some manly virtues kind of nonsense i got
stuck on years ago.  i once read something about how people who slept on
beds were soft so i slept on the floor for 5 years.

when i was young and i would travel, i'd never stay at a decent hotel or
motel, not even something like a red roof or super eight.  too fancy!  i'd
seek out some ridiculous flop house that the salvation army wouldn't even
consider using.

i thought the greatest place i ever stayed was the pioneer hotel in
cheyenne.  loaded with drunken and derelict cowboys and indians.  it just
screamed personality.  as a yahoo reviewer writes:

The Pioneer Hotel is a filthy, halfway house; full of cockroaches and yes,
it's unrenovated. This means the halls smell of urine, the shared bathroom
on each floor remains uncleaned and the wall-paper and plaster are falling
away from the walls and ceiling. Do yourself a favor, stay anywhere in town
but here. No matter how cheap it is, it isn't worth it.


today i am mostly ruined when it comes to lodging.  i think those fancy beds
and pillows they have at the courtyard are to die for.  doubletree also has
something similar.  my pioneer hotel days are surely behind me and i sleep
in bed, but i still retain taking my coffee or tea black with no sweetener.

Curt, chest compression is still in as it helps to save life.  If one does 
the chest compression before the EMT arrives, the patient survial is high. 
The common folks do not have the AED at home or in the car.

Peter, I was wrong.  The PJ did use electronic monitoring to do BP as they 
were able to get sys/dia numbers.  See the picture in the middle.  Yes, we 
do get BP by palpation only if we can't use the stethoscope.  At times, I 
barely get pulse as patient tense up or sensitive on their limbs.

chamomile (great for GI  woes...) I didn't realize...

Guess what I'm going to be drinking for awhile.

Prilosec seems to irritate my stomach (strange side effect of the acid reducers 
according to my doc) so I'm on Prevacid lately but it doesn't seem to do the 
job. Next time I talk to the doc I'm going to lean on him for a GI consult. He 
wanted to try a cardiac CT but it doesn't sound like he's getting permission. 
I'm really too young for it to be required...

I have a tin of that (twinings,loose) sitting on my desk in my cube at  
work, next to my old Krups Novo compact... My home machine isn't much  
newer; a Rancilio Audrey (upgraded with a commercial portafilter)

For tea I either drink that, roobios, or chamomile (great for GI  
woes...)

For espresso, these days it's either LaVazza Dek or Qualita Oro... I  
feel like I need to sneak my shots of espresso when I am home so  
that my son won't mooch them!

type? (leaves, bags,etc)  or what?


My understanding is that there's green tea, which is just
leaves, dried.  Black tea, which is fermented and then dried.
Then there's oolong, which is only partially fermented.
All are the leaves of the tea plant.

[MBZ] Free Parts/Labor Guides For older MBs

Hi all -
I have part of a Mitchell Manual - used in shops to determine how many hours 
of labor can be charged for different jobs.  Most of the manual was 
sold/given away a few years ago but the MB part is still here.


It's free to anyone waning it for the shipping cost.

It covers early 60s to 68 and in addition to labor times it also has tech 
info for some models - timing setting, location of chassis #, spark plug 
info, for models W108, 109, 110, 111, 112  113.  Sec 2 covers 68-72 models 
W107, 108, 109,111, 114  115.  The last section covers 73-up (it was 
publish in 77 so it stops there)  with similar info for W114, 115, 116, 
107.It also contains parts diagrams of the different jobs covered.  54 
pages with 4 divider pages.


$5 will cover shipping.  1st to reply gets them.  (it's not a big deal)  ;-)

Get the GI consult and get an endoscopy so there is no doubt of what's going
on. I was flailing like you are, got the referral for the
super-fly-lesbian-gut-doctor, had the scope and found the Barrett's
Esophagus before it went all cancer on me. I do a protonix each morn and the
acid pumps are cut way back.

Curt:

Assume you are totally lactose intolerant and cut out all lactose  
containing substances.  I've personally come to the conclusion that  
acid reflux isn't an acid production problem, per se, but a gastric  
propulsion problem (vapor lock, sort of) as a result of improper  
fermentation of gut contents.  Easy to acquire a set of gut bacteria  
that cheerfully ferment complex sugars into lots of gas, very fast.   
This won't move with normal gut activity, and so stomach contractions  
push the contents up the esophagus instead of down the small intestine.


Acid reducers help by suppressing the fermentation via higher pH in  
the intestines, but the real cause is the fermentation.


Gas-X helps a lot, since it breaks up the foam from the intestinal  
gas, so does avoiding un-fermented milk products of any kind.  This  
includes commercial bread products and ANYTHING with milk in it (read  
labels).  Anything with lactose added is bad, too, and it's quite  
common and not always labeled completely.


In my case, eating less also helps, if I can stick to it.

Actually, I think that you are going to have to take it apart anyway if you 
replace the whole door because the hinges attach to the door.  In order to 
detach them that plastic cover has to come off.

I've already detached the door and removed the plastic liner,  The problem
is that the metal latch has come apart from the plastic liner and I don't
know how to reattach it.

very probably but the resolution was is too low in the email for me to see.
that is the exact position it was parked in.  now picture a work van in
reverse joy riding around the curve at way too high a speed.  if you can
follow further down the hill on fairfield (would be to leftward in the
bottom pic), you will see a cul de sac.  that is where they abandoned the
van and ran off into the woods.

if you follow leftward a very short distance from my house, you see a street
that tees into fairfield called deerwood.  the lizard lives a few houses up
on that street.

sold the wagon to my neighbor for $500 figuring it would be a good home.  i
figured he would fix it up and use it.  he turned it without repairs for a
profit instead.  so it goes with aspirations!

I'm a victim of my symptoms. I get chest pain on exertion and if I'm 
stressed/excited (getting a clunker snowmobile to start for instance) at all 
other times I feel fine. No reflux, no taste (although I've had that before) no 
indigestion of any kind, no heartburn...

So you go to the doc with chest pains and he wants to work up the chest. We 
found nothing, zip, zero, but he considers some of that inconclusive because I 
can't run on the treadmill for very long. Still it all improves with the 
Prilosec (which works better than Protonix) so I'm assured it isn't a heart 
issue. Doc wants to do his due diligence but I'm ready to scope the insides and 
see whats going on.

Peter, I did try reducing my milk intake on the theory that it would maybe 
lower the pain response. In fact it made no difference at all... If I had what 
you'd call standard reflux symptoms I'd be more into it but as I don't...

Get the GI consult and get an endoscopy so there is no doubt of what's going
on. I was flailing like you are, got the referral for the
super-fly-lesbian-gut-doctor, had the scope and found the Barrett's
Esophagus before it went all cancer on me. I do a protonix each morn and the
acid pumps are cut way back.

The ad says 1996. Normally aspirated 24v engine with variable intake 
tuning and EGR. The butterflies in the intake runners get gunked up and 
seize. There's also some fun with fuel fittings, and for some reason the 
glow plugs are often impossible to remove in one piece. I guess the body 
is OK, except during Spring Perch season.

The doctor had no choice but to work up the chest pain.  Chest pain = EKG 
period.  A good doctor first rules out what will imminently kill you.  And ER 
docs usually run a battery of tests because they don't like discharging patient 
to home until they are positive that the patient is OK. Basically they don't 
want to get sued.

There I found Indian Assai Maranji and Keemun Conguo. I don't know how

I just did that repair on my glovebox door. It broke at one point
recently, with the spring jumping the spring-stop. I bent the ends of the
spring to gouge into the spring stop and not slip over it. Works fine now,
but I do need to adjust the hinges where they mount to the dashboard
because the glovebox light stays on with the door closed.

Search for all the food type remedies.

Perhaps eat tons of garlic - the former Kiev resident I work with said
it is europe's most potent killer of stuff you want dead in your body
- i.e. it kills all the bad stuff in your mouth that causes tooth
cavities, etc.  I have begun taking fresh garlic bulb chewed up with
good high fat youghurt every morning - for grins.

I have heard numerous persons speak about the reality that the
big-pharma fixes for gut stuff are purely money makers for the
mega-national big-pharma - stay away from them as much as possible,
or, give your money to Nancy Pelosi or any other arm of the federal
government - same difference.

Lowering acid is not the trick - I forget what the trick is... maybe a
body cleanse, you know - get a 20 meter length of cheesecloth and
swallow a meter of cheesecloth each day until the first swallow comes
out the other end - I heard of that type of cleanse one time - maybe
it works.

Also try other things that bring balance back to the gut - perhaps
acidophilous - the bacteria in yoghurt.

Consult with the people at a good health store - not GNC, but small
independent perhaps?

I would stay as far away from the pharma meds - do the eating thing,
whatever that means - you gotta find that out and make fit for you.

Although, I do like the odor of garlic, really.
When my wife eats garlic for whatever reason and has that fine aroma
oozing from the pores of her skin - I find it nice, really.

no, it's not gourmet.  it's ordinary guy beer and has been forever.  that's
the whole point.  you become a gourmet like brown and you tell us that
yeungling doesn't compare to some extra fancy belgian stuff.

when you become an expert you often lose the beauty of things.  that is
the point

let me try it slow with you in terms you can understand.  suppose a guy goes
to a church service at a  dissenter protestant meeting house and is moved by
the noble simplicity and honest piety of it.  how does one honor that by
saying that well, the place is surely not as nice as some famous
catherdral and then shares with us a fine point of scholastic philosophy as
applied to houses of worship.

but what is the point of having a point if i have to explain it to you in
such detail?

Yeah, well - that is what gourmet is, eh?
What do I want with some idiot marketing paid for by some
multi-national brewer that xxx is the best beer.  Gimme the ordinary
guy beer that is known by ordinary guys - and the gourmet of the beer
comes forth.  Gourmet is not a madison avenue schtick that money buys
- it is what is real.

I heard that this is what garlic does - it comes out from your skin as
odor - good or bad.
I think most people are like what you say - they find garlic odor as
anti-social, so ya just gotta be careful.  I think garlic is a
wonderful odor.  Eat it Curt.

Sure and I'm not concerned about that, we did a stress test that came back 
negative, great. Then he put me on naproxin which aggravated my gut which led 
to Protonix which made an improvement and Prilosec which got more improvement 
and finally Prevacid which is not as good for me.

The thing is at this point I don't want to revisit my heart I want to figure 
out the problem in my gut. All the diagnosis at this point leads to my gut and 
not my heart... We've been at this 3 months now which is annoying me. I pay 
extra to get the better level of insurance (POS vs HMO) and now I want to use 
it. My better level of insurance gives me better access to specialists and now 
I want a specialist.

No ER doc BTW, I had these twinges occasionally for a month before I saw my 
regular guy. At first it was basically nothing a very slight soreness in my 
left arm only when I was working really hard. Then it got more painful and more 
common and I figured I needed it checked out. Having seen how excited everybody 
got when I explained it I'll know not to wait if I have a heart attack, the 
problem now is how do I tell the difference between this and a heart attack? I 
hope this is one of those where I'll just know.

The doctor had no choice but to work up the chest pain.  Chest pain
= EKG period.  A good doctor first rules out what will imminently kill
you.  And ER docs usually run a battery of tests because they don't
like discharging patient to home until they are positive that the
patient is OK. Basically they don't want to get sued.

I'm ready to scope the insides and see whats going on.

did try reducing my milk intake on the theory that it would maybe lower
the pain response. In fact it made no difference at all... If I had
what you'd call standard reflux symptoms I'd be more into it but as I
don't...

I keep forgetting to eat some yoghurt, we've got it in the house, my wife eats 
it, I just forget.

I'm one of a small group that really don't care about garlic. Its fine, I don't 
mind it but its not my go-to seasoning... I'm Finnish, our go-to seasoning is 
just to leave it bland... ;)

I told my doc that taking pills the rest of my life is not an acceptable answer 
for this or my high blood pressure. He nods but I don't think he really 
understands.

Had some chamomile tea tonight, made my gut feel surprisingly good surprisingly 
quick. Might be on to something here, or it could of course be all in my head.

Search for all the food type remedies.

Perhaps eat tons of garlic - the former Kiev resident I work with said
it is europe's most potent killer of stuff you want dead in your body
- i.e. it kills all the bad stuff in your mouth that causes tooth
cavities, etc.  I have begun taking fresh garlic bulb chewed up with
good high fat youghurt every morning - for grins.

I have heard numerous persons speak about the reality that the
big-pharma fixes for gut stuff are purely money makers for the
mega-national big-pharma - stay away from them as much as possible,
or, give your money to Nancy Pelosi or any other arm of the federal
government - same difference.

Lowering acid is not the trick - I forget what the trick is... maybe a
body cleanse, you know - get a 20 meter length of cheesecloth and
swallow a meter of cheesecloth each day until the first swallow comes
out the other end - I heard of that type of cleanse one time - maybe
it works.

Also try other things that bring balance back to the gut - perhaps
acidophilous - the bacteria in yoghurt.

Consult with the people at a good health store - not GNC, but small
independent perhaps?

I would stay as far away from the pharma meds - do the eating thing,
whatever that means - you gotta find that out and make fit for you.

Curt:

Angina is a result of blood flow deficiency to the heart due to  
constricted arteries.  Low oxygen will give the same results -- maybe  
you have a breathing problem!


I have gotten much too large around the middle, and have problems  
breathing if I'm bent over, and intestinal gas GREATLY increases the  
effect.


If your upper abdomen sounds hollow if you slap it, you have too much  
gas inside, and this will give you all sorts of intestinal and  
breathing problems (that is, your diaphragm cannot pull down, greatly  
decreases lung capacity).


Do check with the gut doctor, but ask about lung problems too.

'Don't know what term he used when he asked for them; I wasn't there, but he 
DOES know what vehicle he has, and I'd bet a lot that he asked for filters 
for HIS vehicle just as he has before.  'Don't think I've ever heard 'im 
call it either one.  I don't know, but I thought they started calling it 
Bluetec in '08.  'Course an R320 oughta give the poor parts guy a 
clue - CDI, Bluetec or whatever.

Oh, I'm not speaking of garlic as go to seasoning.
I mean, garlic as the main course - at every meal - until you reach
some normal equilibrium.
I think its great that your gut feels better with the chamomile tea!!
If you purchase garlic oil capsules - I purchase the stuff that stinks
- on purpose.  My theory is that odor is part of the remedy and that
the deodorized garlic capsules may not be as effective.  As RLE notes
- do not go to the office after you chow down a handful of garlic oil
capsules - and I did mean chow down a handful - a handful of 15 of the
1500mg Now brand found at many local drugstores or supermarket or
health food - do them when you go to bed.  The shelves are full of
garlic oil, so there are many people that use it.  When I was a kid,
my mom would feed us garlic oil - I never had explosive vomiting when
I ate the garlic oil in vast quantities - maybe that is what Peter is
addressing and the gas was decreased with the garlic oil so I did not
have any vomiting after eating garlic oil?

[MBZ] OT: Muffler design?

Anybody know anything about muffler design? I've got an old snowmobile that the 
muffler is NLA and a strange enough design that nothing else will work right.
I bought a muffler from a Cub Cadet tractor and its okay but still too loud. It 
looks like that muffler is just a can with a tube that has holes punched all 
around it inside.

I *think* quiet mufflers generally have some kind of fiberglass packing inside. 
I've got to cut this muffler anyway since its too long, I was thinking that 
since I had to have it open I'd stuff some fiberglass in (either the pink stuff 
or some mat) around the outside and see if that helped any. I don't think it 
could make it any worse...

I've also thought about welding in more baffles but theres not that much space, 
its about the size of a coffee can.

I stopped by a muffler shop Friday and nabbed some cut-offs.  (2-3
inch pieces of new pipe.)  I also bought more flux-core welding wire
for the Hobart.  Ten pounds this time, $55 for the 0.035.  I'd lost a
rubber exhaust hanger with the muffler Thursday.  As I was at the
U-Pull I got a couple more, along with a rather nice trunk mat and
carpet from a 114 gasser.

Saturday it rained heavily all day, so I had to wait 'til today to fix
the muffler.  I put the rear of the car up on ramps and selected the
best piece from my scrap exhaust collection to collar the break.  I
glued the dislodged rubber bumper (114 987 00 39, aka 479076-28) back to
the frame, as the rubber 'tit' had torn half off.  (Shoe Goo, of 
course.)

I had to notch the new collar in order to get the best fit to the
ratty tailpipe, and its prior welds.  I didn't need to remove the
exhaust system, lowering the back was sufficient.  The new collar was
somewhat larger than the exhaust pipe, so I welded a strip onto the
pipe remains so that I could then weld the collar to that strip.  I
welded the new collar onto the muffler, then welded the collar to the
exhaust pipe.  I had to grind and re-weld a number of times in spots
to cure exhaust leaks.  I found another hole in the exhaust pipe and
had to weld a patch over that.  That took nearly as long to do as the
muffler, because it was much less accessible.  The whole job was
something like three and a half hours.  (The off-the-car part was
_so_ easy, but underneath the car, not so much.)

The muffler ended up a bit cocked so that the rubber hangers and
bumpers don't fit as well as they did.  Oops.  I broke a rubber
hanger, but I got two Friday so I was still OK.

Of note is that the Hobart wire was much shinier and smoother than the
cheap Harbor Freight stuff, and seemed to work better.  It was a bit
too large for the job (the old stuff was 0.030), but surprisingly it
fit through the gun's 0.030 tip.  (I should get the correct tip,
which Big R carries.  I also will need some more 0.024 bare wire for
the Miller, I noticed it was getting low when I tried to borrow its
0.030 tip [which doesn't fit].)

[MBZ] M103 oil filter and OM602 alternator

I decided that it's time to change the oil in the 300E - therfore the filter
needs to be changed at the same time ( first time for me on this car). I
found the oil filter - in approximately the same location it is on the OM60x
engines. However, it's a small diameter screw-on filter, almost under the
massive air filter. How do you get the oil filter off? I'm thinking of
making a right-angle drive belt wrench from an old deep socket slotted for a
piece of leather belt so I can use a ratchet and extension to turn it.



The alternator died in the '92 300D, so I decided it was time to install the
115 amp alternator I bought from a previous list member a while ago. I had
to splice in ring connectors instead of using the plug - hard to reach and
solder heavy wire from under the car, but do-able (done).

My daughter took the car into the far end of OKC today (30 miles) - calls me
this evening saying the car is dead, come get me. I found the car with the
belt shreaded, only one strip about a 1/4 inch wide still in place, the rest
wrapped between the fan clutch and the water pump pulley. All the pulleys
seem to turn freely, but the one on the alternator wobbles 20 to 30 degrees.
I can't tell yet whether the nut on the shaft is loose, ro the alternator
bearings are gone. I'll have to find an alternator and replace it in the
parking lot (Macaroni Grill) - hopefully tomorrow.
I guess this is waht happens when you install a used alternator instead of
buying a Bosch re-built unit. I don't need those extra amps as bad as I
thought I did! (Preparing for a  mobile ham radio that I don't own yet).

That car really is a frankenheap with all that patchwork!  Do you have any 
recent photos of this car? I'm sure Ive seen it before but that was years ago.  
I need to get motivated to get my 220D back on the road. I started with an 
extensive trunk floor and quarter panel rust repair project 5 years ago but 
never finished. It doesn't help that I now have a 123 240D to replace the 115 
as my daily driver.  I really miss driving the 220D.

Well now that the entire trunk floor is out I have a nice view of the 
differential and rear axle shafts.  The right side boot is torn and I'm sure 
that the sandblasting that I did way back when didn't help matters since sand 
probably found it's way into the torn boot.  I figure it needs a new shaft.  
This job should be made much easier now that I can access the axleshaft from 
top and bottom! But is this job easy? What is involved? I read the BBB but it 
isn't that straightforward.

I need to get motivated to get my 220D back on the road. I started with an 
extensive trunk floor and quarter panel rust repair project 5 years ago but 
never finished. It doesn't help that I now have a 123 240D to replace the 115 
as my daily driver.  I really miss driving the 220D.

I stopped by a muffler shop Friday and nabbed some cut-offs.  (2-3
inch pieces of new pipe.)  I also bought more flux-core welding wire
for the Hobart.  Ten pounds this time, $55 for the 0.035.  I'd lost a
rubber exhaust hanger with the muffler Thursday.  As I was at the
U-Pull I got a couple more, along with a rather nice trunk mat and
carpet from a 114 gasser.

Saturday it rained heavily all day, so I had to wait 'til today to fix
the muffler.  I put the rear of the car up on ramps and selected the
best piece from my scrap exhaust collection to collar the break.  I
glued the dislodged rubber bumper (114 987 00 39, aka 479076-28) back to
the frame, as the rubber 'tit' had torn half off.  (Shoe Goo, of course.)
I had to notch the new collar in order to get the best fit to the
ratty tailpipe, and its prior welds.  I didn't need to remove the
exhaust system, lowering the back was sufficient.  The new collar was
somewhat larger than the exhaust pipe, so I welded a strip onto the
pipe remains so that I could then weld the collar to that strip.  I
welded the new collar onto the muffler, then welded the collar to the
exhaust pipe.  I had to grind and re-weld a number of times in spots
to cure exhaust leaks.  I found another hole in the exhaust pipe and
had to weld a patch over that.  That took nearly as long to do as the
muffler, because it was much less accessible.  The whole job was
something like three and a half hours.  (The off-the-car part was
_so_ easy, but underneath the car, not so much.)

The muffler ended up a bit cocked so that the rubber hangers and
bumpers don't fit as well as they did.  Oops.  I broke a rubber
hanger, but I got two Friday so I was still OK.

Of note is that the Hobart wire was much shinier and smoother than the
cheap Harbor Freight stuff, and seemed to work better.  It was a bit
too large for the job (the old stuff was 0.030), but surprisingly it
fit through the gun's 0.030 tip.  (I should get the correct tip,
which Big R carries.  I also will need some more 0.024 bare wire for
the Miller, I noticed it was getting low when I tried to borrow its
0.030 tip [which doesn't fit].)

Chamomile does wonders with gas that doesn't want to move...

I made a pint of it (extra strong, from 1 bag, with 2-3tsp of  
tirbinado sugar) iced it down to just warm, put it into a sippy cup  
and gave it to my 3yr old who woke up (screaming) with gas pains.


He took a few sips and a low rumble replaced a high pitched squeak...

I'm one of a small group that really don't care about garlic. Its  
fine, I don't mind it but its not my go-to seasoning... I'm Finnish,  
our go-to seasoning is just to leave it bland... ;)


I told my doc that taking pills the rest of my life is not an  
acceptable answer for this or my high blood pressure. He nods but I  
don't think he really understands.


Had some chamomile tea tonight, made my gut feel surprisingly good  
surprisingly quick. Might be on to something here, or it could of  
course be all in my head. :)

Search for all the food type remedies.

Perhaps eat tons of garlic - the former Kiev resident I work with said
it is europe's most potent killer of stuff you want dead in your body
- i.e. it kills all the bad stuff in your mouth that causes tooth
cavities, etc.  I have begun taking fresh garlic bulb chewed up with
good high fat youghurt every morning - for grins.

I have heard numerous persons speak about the reality that the
big-pharma fixes for gut stuff are purely money makers for the
mega-national big-pharma - stay away from them as much as possible,
or, give your money to Nancy Pelosi or any other arm of the federal
government - same difference.

Lowering acid is not the trick - I forget what the trick is... maybe a
body cleanse, you know - get a 20 meter length of cheesecloth and
swallow a meter of cheesecloth each day until the first swallow comes
out the other end - I heard of that type of cleanse one time - maybe
it works.

Also try other things that bring balance back to the gut - perhaps
acidophilous - the bacteria in yoghurt.

Consult with the people at a good health store - not GNC, but small
independent perhaps?

I would stay as far away from the pharma meds - do the eating thing,
whatever that means - you gotta find that out and make fit for you.

I wish I'd know that camomile tea fixed colic in infants when my  
niece was small -- she howled pretty much non-stop for a year and a  
half, bor thing.

I think I took the old one out by hand or with channel locks.  I 
can't remember.  I know I never had any special tool.  The new one 
can be turned on tight enough by hand.


I have a couple of new oil filters left over from the M102.  I will 
make you or lt don a deal in spring.




I decided that it's time to change the oil in the 300E - therfore the filter
needs to be changed at the same time ( first time for me on this car). I
found the oil filter - in approximately the same location it is on the OM60x
engines. However, it's a small diameter screw-on filter, almost under the
massive air filter. How do you get the oil filter off? I'm thinking of
making a right-angle drive belt wrench from an old deep socket slotted for a
piece of leather belt so I can use a ratchet and extension to turn it.



The alternator died in the '92 300D, so I decided it was time to install the
115 amp alternator I bought from a previous list member a while ago. I had
to splice in ring connectors instead of using the plug - hard to reach and
solder heavy wire from under the car, but do-able (done).

My daughter took the car into the far end of OKC today (30 miles) - calls me
this evening saying the car is dead, come get me. I found the car with the
belt shreaded, only one strip about a 1/4 inch wide still in place, the rest
wrapped between the fan clutch and the water pump pulley. All the pulleys
seem to turn freely, but the one on the alternator wobbles 20 to 30 degrees.
I can't tell yet whether the nut on the shaft is loose, ro the alternator
bearings are gone. I'll have to find an alternator and replace it in the
parking lot (Macaroni Grill) - hopefully tomorrow.
I guess this is waht happens when you install a used alternator instead of
buying a Bosch re-built unit. I don't need those extra amps as bad as I
thought I did! (Preparing for a  mobile ham radio that I don't own yet).
