This winter my idle speed after a cold start seems to be a little too
low. The whole car shakes at idle on a cold morning. With just a
slight throttle, maybe an additional 50 RPM or so, everything is
 normal.

So turn it up a tetch. That's one handy thing of the
115 diesels, etc., that dash-mount idle speed knob.

That being said, I would assume any amputation of the upper leg to me

Once the engine has warmed up, the shaking at idle is much reduced.

Re: [MBZ] 300TD suspension oil

2010-02-13 Thread MG
I think they make the aircraft oil red because it goes in the
brakes so that when it is checked it can be seen to be the right
stuff. Don't you need almost 4 quarts of oil to completely
replace all the oil in the system?

The transmission is bad so I haven't had a chance to drive it
yet to see if the suspension works right though I know it doesn't
leak when standing still with the engine running. I was thinking
of using aircraft oil to flush the system and till I see if the
accumulators are good or not and then flush it again with the
real stuff. Unfortunately around here the aircraft oil cost as
much or more then the real MB oil so I guess I might as well use
the real oil.

Haven't done anything on it as I just got it on Wed. All that

While you are at it, you might want to change the low pressure hose

I knew a fellow too, who had a 600 for daily transport. A really amazing
car. Hmmm, I wonder when the hydraulic fail, if all the windows fall open
and the all seats start to slide around on their tracks?? lol.

I looked at one for sale in town here years ago. They were asking
$39,000.

It looked amazing, very well cared for body and interior, but a few things
needed a bit of attention. Oh oh, . lol The real party trick when
showing it to me, was the self closing truck. And yeah, it closed with
real

authority, you didn't want to get your hand or arm in that sucker after
pushing the close button! lol

Funny in ways, you have to take all the engineering efforts made in
context. They went to such trouble making the windows operate silently,
as

well as the seats slide back and forth, but if you were opening a window,
I'm not sure you'd hear an electric motor over the enginenot as quiet
as

you might think.

Like you Larry, I'd love a 600, but the cost to run one properly would be
scary!! I'd even love a SE 6.3. Did they come in both long and short

they are truly awesome cars. They are larger in every dimension - even
the

hood star is large. The window lifts are *hydraulic* - must be spooky to
watch them raise and lower silently. The engine used in the 600 was a
fuel
injected 6.3 like the one used in the more common 300SE/SEL of the 60s -
a
outstanding car in it's own right. I heard some salesmen would tape a
$100
dollar bill to the dash and challenge the potential buyer to grab it
between
0 and 60 mph. I understand the same $100 bill was never reached. I
heard

similar stories about 427 Cobra's BTW. Anyway - for such a large car the
600 was very fast. One of my former customers drove a 600SWB as his
daily

driver. He really liked it for tooling around town.

Air suspension was a common problem BTW. You might see a 600 (or
300SE/SEL sitting low to the ground looking like some misguided soul
wanted
to lower it - when the problem was leaking air bags in the suspension
that

allowed the car to lie down like a tired puppy.

Wouldn't mind having a 600/300 but wouldn't want to pay for maintaining
one.

Hi Larry,

My trans has always had a very slow leak, and I didn't feel it worth
pulling

it all out unless there were other things to do, while in there. Other
than that, 350,000+ kms, and it all original. The car has never been
abused, by me or the previous owner, but all seems ok so far. No slip or
anything. I use synthetic fluid, and it gets about 80% of its current use
in the city, so it does run through the gears often, not just left in top
as

with highway driving.

I don't know tons about the cars, other than the questions I've asked
here,
but if there's anything I have tinkered with on the car, I'm happy to
share

it with you.

Cheap to buy, cheap to run with parts from Rusty, even a lot of the small

you

can stand in it while working on it. ;-) lol

Re: [MBZ] 300TD suspension oil

2010-02-13 Thread David Bruckmann
MIL-5606 is generally a safe substitute for ZH-M, CHF, and other
mineral oils like that. It does tend to have a slightly different
viscosity, which could have long term effects. In an emergency,
lightweight motor oil is better than running the system dry. Just
NEVER use synthetic/vegetable-based fluids (ie brake fluid), as they
will totally destroy the seals and hoses.

A traumatic amputation of a limb is
not as lethal as a clean cut off.  So I was told during
EMT training about 30 years ago.  The blood vessels go
into spasm and tend to close off.
That being said, I would assume any amputation of the upper
leg to me 10% fatal unless you were immediately attended to
by someone who knew how to control bleeding, that would not
 be me ;-)

Hard telling. Consider that this site is 1000 miles inland.

We didn't have anything to do with the transmitter, obviously. There were
(are) two 300kW generators there, and I suspect everything in the place was
backed by them, so there would have been plenty of other loads besides the
transmitter. There could have been some redundancy, too, but I've never been
to the site so I don't know the details.

Interestingly, it's right down the road from the Army depot that incinerates
nerve gas and other nasty stuff they have been taking out of the arsenal.

[MBZ] Interesting day as in may you live in....

2010-02-13 Thread MG
Had an interesting day today. Took the drivers door latch
mechanism (DDLM) out of an 81 300SD. Easy job went real quick.
Lots of room. Then I took the broken DDLM out of the 83 300TD. Oh
what fun. Had to take the plastic rain cover off the DDLM first,
then and only then could I just bearly (no tongue in cheek, would
have bitten it off) was I able to squeeze the thing out of there.
Left the cover up there and managed to get the one from the SD
into place and the cover on and fastened. Lo and behold it works
just like new.

After that I took the electric window mechanism out. luckily on
the same door so I didn't have to take three door panels off. Not
too bad. As a matter of fact downright easy after the latch job.
Found the two lead rivets that hold the lift arm to the gear were
cut. Took the thing and did a quick spot of weld to hold the arm
to the gear and put it back in. Job done and window goes up and
down just as pretty as you please.

Bad part about all of this is I had to do it without the help of
any libations to the gods. It was just too cold for that.
Probably means the whole thing will mess up somehow in just a
while. OH well. I'm having one now so maybe that will help to
mitigate the damage.

2010-02-13 Thread WILTON
Yeah, aircraft hydraulic fluid, MIL-5606, is read to clearly and easily
distinguish it from other fluids, engine oil, water, urine, etc. Easier to
find and identify leaks, too. If you see a red fluid dripping from an
aircraft, you know you have a hydraulic leak, or somebody's been hurt. (But
hyd fluid is usually a little thinner and not quite as dark as blood.)

I think they make the aircraft oil red because it goes in the brakes so
that when it is checked it can be seen to be the right stuff. Don't you
need almost 4 quarts of oil to completely replace all the oil in the
system?

The transmission is bad so I haven't had a chance to drive it yet to see
if the suspension works right though I know it doesn't leak when standing
still with the engine running. I was thinking of using aircraft oil to
flush the system and till I see if the accumulators are good or not and
then flush it again with the real stuff. Unfortunately around here the
aircraft oil cost as much or more then the real MB oil so I guess I might
as well use the real oil.

Re: [MBZ] 600 parts costs

2010-02-13 Thread E M
It's always a thrill to see just what a great engineering company can do,
when all the accountants go away on holiday for awhile! The 600 was a big
step forward from what anyone else was doing at the time. The so called
competition at the time came from companies like Rolls, which were no
competition at all really. The current Bugatti Vayron is another example.
People will say negative things about it, but in my opinion, it's an
engineering master piece. People forget for a moment just what it takes to
make a car go over 250 mph! A car that can do it, and still idle through
rush hour traffic, and surround it's occupants in total comfort and luxury
is an amazing feat.

I agree, those who are willing and able to buy and look after these special
cars at they should be, do every car enthusiast a favour. Guy I knew in the
club years ago, sold a mint SL 300, to buy a Gullwing that was pulled out of
a lake. Restored the car to new and drove it every chance he got. It was
always a treat to see it, and an even bigger treat to see and hear it while
in motion.

Re: [MBZ] 600 parts costs

2010-02-13 Thread Dieselhead
I agree, the 600 is a tour de force of late 50s automotive
technology. Many of the features built into the 600 were not seen in
domestic cars until 2 to 4 decades later, if ever. They were, and
still are a fabulous car. I like to see them maintained and used.

last night, I was watching a rerun of Rockford Files, and they had a
600 LWB running around in Lost Angeles. It is a thrill even to see
one on TV.

It is too bad they don't still make a car of that magnitude and
grace. IMHO, the Maybach is just a car for those who want to say
they spent more on a car than you did. It does not look like a
presidential Limo, like the 600 does. With a 600, you expect to see
the Pope, Princess Grace, Heads of State of any European country and
the like.

I do believe there is a market for a stately car that is hand built
by craftsmen. The biggest problem is the enviro-nazis. They
wouldn't let you build a limited edition car that was not just a
little sheet metal different than a production model. I guess the
substitute is the suburban or a hummer. Somehow neither seem as
elegant as a 600.

According to a recently retired (after 38 years) tech at my dealer, the

He tended for years to a 50K mile black 600 SWB that I would see in the
service department from time to time. I had the opportunity to look at the
bottom side once when it was in drydock on the lift. Made my Visa
card tremble.

He also did what had to be done on a few 108 Cabs which also can deplete
your holdings.

I am puzzled by the resentment and disdain shown here by a few toward cars
of this sort. I am glad that those who have the resources to maintain and
enjoy them do so because when I see a well kept example of an important MB,
it's my pleasure.

I saw a red Grosser in a Batman movie the other day. Had to be one of the flicks
with Robin in it, but I can't remember if it was the Val Kilmer or George
Clooney movie. Maybe Poison Ivy had a Grosser in the Clooney movie?

It is a thrill even to see one [600] on TV.

What they did in Witches of Eastwick made me sick.
