Re: [MBZ] 300TD suspension oil
I think they make the aircraft oil red because it goes in the brakes so that when it is checked it can be seen to be the right stuff. Don't you need almost 4 quarts of oil to completely replace all the oil in the system? The transmission is bad so I haven't had a chance to drive it yet to see if the suspension works right though I know it doesn't leak when standing still with the engine running. I was thinking of using aircraft oil to flush the system and till I see if the accumulators are good or not and then flush it again with the real stuff. Unfortunately around here the aircraft oil cost as much or more then the real MB oil so I guess I might as well use the real oil. Haven't done anything on it as I just got it on Wed. All that hose stuff is on the list as well as checking the routing of the vacuum lines and the accelerator linkage. May have a problem there as it doesn't want to idle when cold without peddle pressure. Though I'm thinking that that may be a problem with over adjustment of the rack damper bolt. Re: [MBZ] R.I.P. LORAN
Hard telling. Consider that this site is 1000 miles inland. We didn't have anything to do with the transmitter, obviously. There were (are) two 300kW generators there, and I suspect everything in the place was backed by them, so there would have been plenty of other loads besides the transmitter. There could have been some redundancy, too, but I've never been to the site so I don't know the details. Interestingly, it's right down the road from the Army depot that incinerates nerve gas and other nasty stuff they have been taking out of the arsenal. [MBZ] Interesting day as in may you live in....
Had an interesting day today. Took the drivers door latch mechanism (DDLM) out of an 81 300SD. Easy job went real quick. Lots of room. Then I took the broken DDLM out of the 83 300TD. Oh what fun. Had to take the plastic rain cover off the DDLM first, then and only then could I just bearly (no tongue in cheek, would have bitten it off) was I able to squeeze the thing out of there. Left the cover up there and managed to get the one from the SD into place and the cover on and fastened. Lo and behold it works just like new. After that I took the electric window mechanism out. luckily on the same door so I didn't have to take three door panels off. Not too bad. As a matter of fact downright easy after the latch job. Found the two lead rivets that hold the lift arm to the gear were cut. Took the thing and did a quick spot of weld to hold the arm to the gear and put it back in. Job done and window goes up and down just as pretty as you please. Bad part about all of this is I had to do it without the help of any libations to the gods. It was just too cold for that. Probably means the whole thing will mess up somehow in just a while. OH well. I'm having one now so maybe that will help to mitigate the damage. Re: [MBZ] 300TD suspension oil
Yeah, aircraft hydraulic fluid, MIL-5606, is read to clearly and easily distinguish it from other fluids, engine oil, water, urine, etc. Easier to find and identify leaks, too. If you see a red fluid dripping from an aircraft, you know you have a hydraulic leak, or somebody's been hurt. The transmission is bad so I haven't had a chance to drive it yet to see if the suspension works right though I know it doesn't leak when standing still with the engine running. According to a recently retired (after 38 years) tech at my dealer, the heater panel (a row of buttons) cost is ten grand. He tended for years to a 50K mile black 600 SWB that I would see in the service department from time to time. I had the opportunity to look at the bottom side once when it was in drydock on the lift. Made my Visa card tremble. He also did what had to be done on a few 108 Cabs which also can deplete your holdings. I am puzzled by the resentment and disdain shown here by a few toward cars of this sort. Re: [MBZ] 600 parts costs
There was a shell advertised in the Star about 15 years ago, for $10,000 if I remember. Maybe a 603 conversion? Hey, even the really high end stuff from Mercedes doesn't always escape the create mechanic or body man. I read once of a SL300 that that seems solid. During restoration, it turned out, the sills were so full or rot, the previous owner filled them with cement!! Probably once of those guys who subscribed to the old 50s slog of, road holding weight in the corners. lol Ed 300E On 13 February 2010 21:49, Jim Cathey j...@windwireless.net wrote: I'm still waiting for the right one of these to drop in my lap. Re: [MBZ] 600 parts costs
It's always a thrill to see just what a great engineering company can do, when all the accountants go away on holiday for awhile! The 600 was a big step forward from what anyone else was doing at the time. The so called competition at the time came from companies like Rolls, which were no competition at all really. The current Bugatti Vayron is another example. People will say negative things about it, but in my opinion, it's an engineering master piece. People forget for a moment just what it takes to make a car go over 250 mph! A car that can do it, and still idle through rush hour traffic, and surround it's occupants in total comfort and luxury is an amazing feat. I agree, those who are willing and able to buy and look after these special cars at they should be, do every car enthusiast a favour. Guy I knew in the club years ago, sold a mint SL 300, to buy a Gullwing that was pulled out of a lake. Restored the car to new and drove it every chance he got. It was always a treat to see it, and an even bigger treat to see and hear it while in motion. Re: [MBZ] 600 parts costs
I agree, the 600 is a tour de force of late 50s automotive technology. Many of the features built into the 600 were not seen in domestic cars until 2 to 4 decades later, if ever. They were, and still are a fabulous car. I like to see them maintained and used. last night, I was watching a rerun of Rockford Files, and they had a 600 LWB running around in Lost Angeles. It is a thrill even to see one on TV. It is too bad they don't still make a car of that magnitude and grace. IMHO, the Maybach is just a car for those who want to say they spent more on a car than you did. It does not look like a presidential Limo, like the 600 does. With a 600, you expect to see the Pope, Princess Grace, Heads of State of any European country and the like. I do believe there is a market for a stately car that is hand built by craftsmen. The biggest problem is the enviro-nazis. They wouldn't let you build a limited edition car that was not just a little sheet metal different than a production model. I guess the substitute is the suburban or a hummer. Somehow neither seem as elegant as a 600. According to a recently retired (after 38 years) tech at my dealer, the heater panel (a row of buttons) cost is ten grand.
