[MBZ] It's getting close to ANZAC day...........lest we forget
Subject: Fw: well said, sir You will enjoy reading these... Makes you think eh. Secretary of State, Dean Rusk, was in France in the early 60's when DeGaulle decided to pull out of NATO. DeGaulle said he wanted all US military out of France as soon as possible. Rusk responded Does that include those who are buried here? DeGaulle did not respond. You could have heard a pin drop ~~ There was a conference in France where a number of international engineers were taking part, including French and American. During a break, one of the French engineers came back into the room saying 'Have you heard the latest dumb stunt Bush has done? He has sent an aircraft carrier to Indonesia to help the tsunami victims. What does he intended to do, bomb them?' A Boeing engineer stood up and replied quietly: 'Our carriers have three hospitals on board that can treat several hundred people; they are nuclear powered and can supply emergency electrical power to shore facilities; they have three cafeterias with the capacity to feed 3,000 people three meals a day They can produce several thousand gallons of fresh water from sea water each day, and they carry half a dozen helicopters for use in transporting victims and injured to and from their flight deck. We have eleven such ships. How many does France have? ' You could have heard a pin drop. ~~ A U.S. Navy Admiral was attending a naval conference that included Admirals from the U.S. , English, Canadian, Australian and French navies. At a cocktail reception, he found himself standing with a large group of Officers that included personnel from most of those countries everyone was chatting away in English as they sipped their drinks. A French admiral suddenly complained that, whereas Europeans learn many languages, Americans learn only English. He then asked, 'Why is it that we always have to speak English in these conferences rather than speaking French?' Without hesitating, the American Admiral replied, 'Maybe it's because the Brit's, Canadians, Aussie's and Americans arranged it so you wouldn't have to speak German.' You could have heard a pin drop. ~~ AND THIS STORY FITS RIGHT IN WITH THE ABOVE... Robert Whiting, an elderly gentleman of 83, arrived in Paris by plane. At French Customs, he took a few minutes to locate his passport in his carry on. You have been to France before, monsieur? the customs officer asked sarcastically. Mr. Whiting admitted that he had been to France previously. Then you should know enough to have your passport ready. The American said, 'The last time I was here, I didn't have to show it. Impossible. Americans always have to show your passports on arrival in France ! The American senior gave the Frenchman a long hard look. Then he quietly explained, ''Well, when I came ashore at Omaha Beach on D-Day in 1944 to help liberate this country, I couldn't find a single Frenchmen to show a passport to. [MBZ] 1989 Mercedes 300SE Brake weirdness
Hello folks, I have some weird happinins' going on with my brakes on my 300SE. It has ABS on it and I have little experience with it in general as I have avoided the things purposely on all cars I've had until the Mercedes. I am reasonable competent in the mechanics area and I have worked on brakes before but this is new to me. Yesterday when driving home from Wally World the brakes started an odd pulsing when coming to a moderate stop. It is usually just before the car comes to a full stop, maybe a second or so. The pedal pulses up (not a softening of the pedal like a master cylinder problem) and the front brakes make a sort of twang sound like a spring vibrating. It doesn't affect the stopping ability, doesn't grab, pull to a side or anything and it only affects the front brakes as far as I can tell. Doesn't do it every time I stop nor has it done it in reverse. I have checked the brake fluid and I put the car on ramps and inspected the brake system for obvious problems like fluid leaks or loose parts and I've found nothing wrong with the brakes visually. I checked for any other problems with the suspension while I was there and didn't find anything amiss. It's almost like as I'm coming to a stop the fluid suddenly expands or the volume increases firming the pedal for a fraction of a second then returns to normal. No warning lights are on and the pads are in good shape, the rotors are less than a year old. I'm gonna pull the tires off tomorrow if it doesn't rain and have a closer look but I'm betting it's some ABS module flakiness. Any help would be appreciated. ___ http://www.okiebenz.com For new and used parts go to www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com

Pull the ABS relay (under the black cover that says ABS) and see if the problem is still happening. The ABS system will give a short test pulse when you first take off and Kaleb is right, dirty or inoperative sensors will play havoc but the symptoms I had was that there where a few test pulses and then after a few hundred meters the ABS light would come on. Not sure about the 126 chassis but I know that 201 sensors will fit in a 124. Hendrik whose 124 has 201 ABS sensors out the front From: Kaleb C. Re: [MBZ] (SPAM?) 1989 Mercedes 300SE Brake weirdness
Our '90 SEL was doing this, and it really annoyed my wife. Cleaning the front sensors didn't help, and the overvoltage relay was all right. So I just unplugged the ABS brain. Few of our cars have ABS, and as often as not (in snow or gravel) for us here the ABS is actually harmful. (It's good on glare ice, of course.) Re: [MBZ] Mercedes CLS Gives BMW The Finger With New Concept
I've always been a fan of shooting brakes, and this one looks pretty good. I've always thought of a real shooting brake having only two passenger doors, but I guess over the years, various definitions have been expanded a bit. We have 4 door coupes now, so what can I say. I think the glass behind the C pillar, and how it flows into the back fixed pillar looks a bit awkward, but other than that, I like it. One think I hate, is the trend to encapsulate engines. I'm a guy, I like mechanical bits and oily things!!! I want to see the engine, and all the bits hanging off it. For those who don't agree, and don't like the look of an engine, well that's what the engine hood is for!!! All part of the sealed engine concept taken too far in my opinion. I never checked or tested the used one before having it installed. My intent is to R/R solely the used one. Questions: 1. Do they run in series or parallel? In other words, will one bad accumularor ruin the ride as if there were TWO bad ones? 2. Will I need a supply of hydraulic suspension (SLS) fluid on hand when tackling this project? 3. Re: [MBZ] OT: for the hi-po VW freaks like Roger ;)
I've always liked the 914s, and a 914/6 was pretty cool. The tin worm did a much better job of recycling them, than any government funded plan could. hee hee. Friends of mine, bought one new, and used it seldom. The brakes and gaskets all required work, so a few years ago, they did a complete freshening of the car. Rebuilt engine and gearbox, painted the body, replaced the sills, etc. I questioned spending the type of money on it they did at the time, but as with all things in life, it's not always about the money. Seems the cars are going up in price, for good ones, so maybe they weren't so foolish in the end. Mind you, very few cars can be freshened or restored for financial gain. I have always felt, the best reason to spend the money on a restoration, was to turn the clock back, and enjoy the car for another 20 years. How can you put a price on that? ;-) ps, I followed a new Panamera for 20 mins across the highway today. I'm a big Porsche fan, and while the car is comfortable to sit in, and I like the interior, it does have to be one of the most butt ugly cars from the outside! uggg Ed 300E On 20 April 2010 14:04, Alex Chamberlain apchamberl...@gmail.com wrote: I knew of the existence of the 924S, but never have seen one in person or even advertised for sale. Re: [MBZ] Changing 300TD air cells (accumulator spheres) - anyone BTDT?
It will take longer to jack up the car or run it up on ramps and deal with that aspect than to change them. Basic wrenches. I don't recall any fluid leaking out when I did mine some years ago, but you should always have a bottle of it around anyway for when you might need to top things off. I don't know about #1. Re: [MBZ] 1989 Mercedes 300SE Brake weirdness
Hendrik whose 124 has 201 ABS sensors out the front I cleaned them off and it made no difference. I'm assuming there are two on each wheel up front and one on the differential? That's the only sensor I could find on the entire rear section of the car. Is there any easy (cheap) way to test the sensors? I did pull the relay and the pulsing stopped so it is in the ABS system. (It's good on glare ice, of course.) She's happy now. -- Jim Any way to disconnect this and turn off the ABS light? You said the evaporator is particularly cold, but no real cooling going on? I'd say the expansion valve is clogged. Wherever there's a too-large restriction, immediately downstream will be unnaturally cold. Could be the expansion valve, or even the receiver/drier. I've had problems getting some systems fully charged, because the gauge set didn't fit right. If you're using R12, there shouldn't be any bubbles if it's fully charged. -- Jim ___ http://www.okiebenz.com For new and used parts go to www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com

Did this get lost? I'll send it again... -- Jim Don't remember 2 red lines. Could they also be the green ones? That sounds kind of familiar though, all the ys and check valves are confusing. Yes, now that I think of it our 114 has green lines for HVAC. The only real 'secret' is that the like-colored lines be together behind check valves. The HVAC and the door locks both have vacuum reservoirs, and they do no good whatsoever if they're not coupled to their consumers. I think everything else doesn't care too much, but of course you don't want something like that engine economy gauge or a diesel key shutoff going to the reservoired vacuum. I'm pretty sure the vacuum feed to the cruise control normally shares the reservoired door lock line. The 'mother lode' diagram seems to be 54-570a, which had vacuum supply diagrams for 107/114/115/116/123 in it, and was found only in the 114 and 116 CD's. I cut out the drawing and attached it here. Re: [MBZ] Mercedes CLS Gives BMW The Finger With New Concept
I rather dis-like the hidden engine - I expect to see something that I can deal with when I open the hood -- not yet another obstacle to why I opened the hood. I suppose it does raise the flat rate for everything done under the hood though - mechanics might like it. I don't like the swoopy lines - tiny windows, and NO star on the hood! I think the glass behind the C pillar, and how it flows into the back fixed pillar looks a bit awkward, but other than that, I like it. One think I hate, is the trend to encapsulate engines. Re: [MBZ] Changing 300TD air cells (accumulator spheres) - anyone BTDT?
I've only worked on one vehicle with the spheres. Both were bad. The material separating the pressure bulb from the fluid had disintegrated on both sides. This caused the area normally filled with gas to be at least partially filled with fluid. The level in the reservoir was way low. The fluid was also blackened - I suspect from bits of deteriorated rubber. It was a real bitch to loosen the lines and replace the spheres. I drained the system as best I could before refilling. I used metric crows feet on the lines - 8mm or 10mm as I recall. When the system is working the car handles marvelously. -Dave Walton On Tue, Apr 20, 2010 at 2:25 PM, andrew strasfogel astrasfo...@gmail.com wrote: I'm fed up with the jarring ride when driving over rough pavement in my 1983 300TD.
