Re: [MBZ] OT: Electritronics Question

2010-04-24 Thread Jim Cathey

I would look for a bad cap in the power supply.

Bad filter cap would sound truly nasty in some way,
but wouldn't keep it from working altogether.

Unless this is some weird-ass digital thing,
and not a traditional analog amplifier.

An amp like that is basically two sections, the preamp (before
the volume control) and the power amp. If there is a patch loop
or a "line out", check those for noise.

Certainly not the transformer. Maybe the filter section of the
power supply. Or the final output section.

Re: [MBZ] 124 rear axel link replacement

2010-04-24 Thread OK Don
I finally got to work on the rear links today - thought I was going to do
both sides in one day. Ended up only getting two links on one side replaced.
I couldn't get the nut loose on the frame side of the torque rod - could
only round it off, then I couldn't get the ball joint end of the tie rod off
the wheel carrier. My ball joint press is too big to fit in there, and the
pickle fork is so long that I only had four inches to swing a hammer. I
tried the flame wrench on the torque link nut - it only made the rubber
smoke, no other effect. These two didn't seem to be all that bad, so I
boloted them back in place. I did find that I had to remove the brake disk
to bend the backing plate/dust shield enough to get the bolt holding the
wheel carrier end of the Torque strut out - I reversed the bolt when I put
that end back together - MUCH easier! The new bolts (which I used, even with
the old links) have triple-square sockets instead of hex heads - it would
have been next to imposible to tighten it in the original orientation.

Since the hum is independent of the volume control, I suspect it's not
something connected to one of the inputs (though you can check that by
unplugging everything like Ed said).

I suspect it's a bad filter capacitor in the power supply.

A few years ago there was a house being built in my neighborhood. It
had been framed, the windows and doors were in, and the rough plumbing
and electrical had been done but for some reason work had stopped
there. It sat that way for a long while, maybe a year or two, and then
the guy across the street got sick of looking at it, bought it, had it
torn down and even the basement filled in. Now it's just an empty lot.

In the state of Vermont, you can carry a knife or a firearm in your pocket
unless you have 'criminal intent'. Alaska and Arizona have similar laws on the
books now, but I don't know exactly how they are worded.
Even those states maintain special disarmed victim zones where violent criminals
are assured that the law abiding victim are defenseless. We don't want to
interfere with the rights of robbers and murders to ply their trades, do we?

I usually have a pocket knife along with a screwdriver, tape measure,
electrical tape...ahhh hang on this is starting to sound strange,
anyway I carry bits and pieces in my pocket that come in useful for work and a
pocket knife can be classed as an offensive weapon and possession of an
offensive weapon on licensed premises is a no no.

Up a bit early this morning getting ready to go for a bike ride, and
seeing the sunrise, which is quite pink and purple this lovely morning.
Have not noticed that intense color recently, wonder if the Icelandic (I
am not going to try to type the name, or say it) volcano has sent some
particles this far around the world?
