Re: [MBZ] 124 headlight "rims" or "doors" replacement

2010-06-08 Thread Jim Cathey

Do you have to remove the entire headlight assembly to change the clear
plastic that surrounds the main light, or can you loosen enough to
change it

in-place? Anyone BTDT?

Just did a 126, and had to remove the whole banana. _Maybe_ you
could do it in-place, but I doubt it. The three bails that catch
the ears on the bezels aren't easily accessible in-place, and
they're very brittle by now. You don't want to break them off
of the headlight body.

All the suds here have the alcohol content printed on the label. And in the
typical Canadian way, anything that smells good, tastes good, or makes you
feel good, must be taxed and priced accordingly. A can of Fuller's London
Porter..$2.45 a 500ml can! And that is in no way the most expensive beer.
Shocking I tell you!

2010-06-08 Thread Dieselhead
No, you don't have to take out the headlights, butthe old
cracked ones may disintegrate when you try to move them.

As for swapping the whole assembly, that should work, but i think you
have to remove the headlight "doors" first. (been 3 or 4 years since
I did that.) So, it kind of defeats the purpose of swapping the
whole assembly to avoid having to disturb the brittle plastic.

Do you have to remove the entire headlight assembly to change the clear
plastic that surrounds the main light, or can you loosen enough to change it
in-place? Anyone BTDT?
I want to move the nice looking ploastic from the vergasser to the Diesel
with the old, checked and cracked plastic, and the reverse as well. Don't
want to damage the old cracked plastis, as it needs to end up on the
vergasser.

A complcating factor is that the vergasser has headlight wipers, and the
Diesel doesn't. I wonder if the wiring is in place to just swap the whole
light assembly?

Obligatory beer content - my current favorite is Fuller's London Porter -

The regeneration mode is to burn off the soot which it does by injecting

Didn't the old 12" discs have okayish video?

Yup. Laserdisc. Got lots of 'em. I like that
it's like a tape player in that _I_ am in control,
versus a DVD player that makes me feel like it's
rewarding me for saving the princess by (eventually,
maybe) showing me a movie...

Higher res than VHS or Beta, lower than DVD. No
motion artifacts, though. Analog video, usually
digital audio. (Not initially, but later in the
product lifecycle.) Introduced in 1977, used
honest-to-God HeNe laser tubes for awhile.

Some years ago when I worked for a company making
some of the first gigabit Ethernet switches they
borrowed my player and some movies for a trade show,
because re-digitizing DVD output for sending through
the network ended up looking kinds crappy. The LD demo'd
much better, and certainly better than VHS, and it was a
commercial-type player with no front panel controls that
just played over and over again. Perfect for the demo
floor. As I recall, it was Waterworld we put in it.

IMO once the video is on the computer, the longest lived storage
would be
online storage. Some ISPs offer "free" storage of several GBs -
Comcast
(my ISP) keep increasing it to stay competitive - I also use
Carbonite - an
automatic backup service which will save the current version of any
file on

the primary hard drive ($60/yr).

AFAIK my HD contents are safe as long as I pay the fee. With Johns
comments about losing date from burned CD in <6 years makesme wat to
save as
much as possible on the HD so it'll be backed-up. With the cost of
HD GBs
coming down it just males it easier that way. I saw a TB HD at a
computer

store for <$50. Ha! I remember when our PCs at work had 20MBs of HD
space! I couldn't comprehend a single GB - how could we even need
so much
space? Course, that was 20 years ago. Go back farther & I used
punch

cards. ("what's that?" asks the younger generation) LOL -

Re: [MBZ] The chairmans Mercedes

2010-06-08 Thread Hendrik and Fay
Hot??
It's bloody freezing, we had the heater on in the beater and I put on long pants
to go out for dinner, talking bout din din's, we went to a place a block down
from the motel called The Final Approach and it was real good, good price, good
size meals, good beer (I had a Paulander wheat beer) and the total bill was $48
and we left the waitress a $10 tip (as per instructions). Plus we where allowed
to sit at the bar and smoke, bloody luxury but they said that come July the 1st,
smoking will be banned in bars/eateries across WI. So we have just made it in
time, cough cough.
The 240D doesn't seem to be leaking, which surprises me, I was expecting the
boot
to be full of water by the time we got to Milwaukee.

But you know, I can put a tape in, press play, and the damn thing works.

With DVDs I'm always getting freezes, I have to stop and clean the disk,
navigate back to where I was, etc. If I need to stop a tape I can stop
it, even remove it and come back later and it picks up right where it
left off. I don't have to watch the studio logos and FBI warnings and
all that other crapola that it won't let me skip.

The extra resolution of the DVD image is just not a big deal to me. VHS
is fine, and it's a hell of a lot more user friendly.

Far as the weather goes, cold, wet and windy just like Adelaide in the

buy a nice HD hoodie and track suit pants to keep WARM, at least the

Re: [MBZ] Ford 7.4l Powerstroke Question

2010-06-08 Thread LWB250
Yeah, I think it's about a year old, so that may be the case.
Apparently these models had problems with sooting up or something, so that they
have a "regeneration" mode where they burn off exhaust gases.  Originally,
there were problems with the amount of heat coming out of the exhaust when they
did this, so much so that it could damage vehicles next to you in traffic.  To
prevent that from happening they put a sort of "baffle" on the exhaust, which
his has.
Better than the old "Model A ignition coil/sparkplug in the exhaust" trick from
years ago

If he bought it NEW last year, it's a 6.4L.  They have the "wonderful" diesel
particulate filter (DPF) and EGR cooler emissions that cause too much soot to
build up in the exhaust system.  They are still sorting out the 2007 to current
model dodges with the cummins as well.

That depends on the definition of "quality". If yours is "color
resolution" - absolutely! If the definition is "luminance
resolution during high motion", VHS can win easily.

Compression artifacts vs color under heterodyne junk. I don't
like either one!!

I presume you are trying to say "VHS movies aspect ratio is
converted to 4:3 by cutting off the edges". I have - or did
have - quite a number that were letterboxed - so the image was
not cut off. Instead the vertical resolution goes way down
because 1/3 of the screen is black (wasted space) to make it fit
a 4:3 window.

IMO once the video is on the computer, the longest lived storage would be
online storage.   Some ISPs offer "free" storage of several GBs - Comcast
(my ISP) keep increasing it to stay competitive - I also use Carbonite - an
automatic backup service which will save the current version of any file on
the primary hard drive ($60/yr).

AFAIK my HD contents are safe as long as I pay the fee.   With Johns
comments about losing date from burned CD in <6 years makesme wat to save as
much as possible on the HD so it'll be backed-up.  With the cost of HD GBs
coming down it just males it easier that way.  I saw a TB HD at a computer
store for <$50.   Ha!  I remember when our PCs at work had 20MBs of HD
space!  I couldn't comprehend a single GB - how could we even need so much
space?   Course, that was 20 years ago.  Go back farther & I used punch
cards.  ("what's that?" asks the younger generation)  LOL -

Only
if they are handled with cotton gloves and stored with meticulous
cleanliness.  This is the reason I think that DVDs are one of the
biggest consumer scams ever perpetrated.  I've had dozens of DVDs
become either totally or partly unplayable due to what appears to be a
fairly minor scratch.  I've never had a VHS tape do this, in fact I
have some tapes that are well over 20 years old that still play fine.
I think this is mostly due to the VHS cassette design which protects
the tape when it's not actually in the player.

Yeah the picture
quality of VHS is not quite that of a DVD but it's good enough, and on
the plus side you can easily skip the previews and FBI warnings, no
menus to fool with, and they work.

As a result I don't buy DVDs anymore, and I've never bought a single Blu-Ray
disc nor will I.

You're right! If installed wrong, the engine can go to max rpm and stay
there until it runs out of fuel or air - or it seizes after turning cherry
red!It's happened before -

The instructions in the WSM are pretty clear - and you can check the install
before tightening the fasteners.

To test the Fuel Shutoff, have the engine running and pull the vac hose to
the shutoff - apply vacuum to the hose and the valve should shutoff the
engine, if not the valve is bad.

Rusty has new valves - pretty inexpensive.

Good luck

If all the lines are properly hooked up, and all other vacuum operated
systems work normally, then it could be the shutoff device itself. It
seems

to me I had to replace that on the '79 300TD once. This was a while back
and my recollection on this is fuzzy. The one thing that I remember
clearly

is that if it is not installed exactly right it could lead to a serious
problem.

It was a bit anticlimactic. I gambled that the threat to report me to
somebody higher up was an empty one, politely told the friendly state
employees to go fudge themselves, accepted a "fail" report, and went
to another emissions testing station in town which was rumored to be
more lax about the on-car part of the process. Sure enough these guys
didn't look under the car (the first place had a mirror on a stick,
like a giant dental mirror, with which they inspected your exhaust
system) and I passed just fine.

If all the lines are properly hooked up, and all other vacuum operated
systems work normally, then it could be the shutoff device itself. It seems
to me I had to replace that on the '79 300TD once. This was a while back
and my recollection on this is fuzzy. The one thing that I remember clearly
is that if it is not installed exactly right it could lead to a serious
problem.

I don't know what I'm doing wrong ;)  but I've transferred plenty of
film to video using the method I outlined with a garage-sale cheapo
projector  and various consumer-level video cameras and never seen any
flicker to speak of, certainly no more than is in the projected image
when viewed normally.  But then some people's brains have more or less
persistence of vision built in, IIRC.

More likely to happen on a OM617, but I often seem to disturb
the vacuum lines when I change the oil filter.

So the first thing I would do is notice if the doors lock/unlock
normally. If not, then it's pump, check valve, or lines into the
cabin.

If the locks behave normally, I'd first check the hose
going to the injection pump.

If it's connected - hook it to a manual vacuum source
(MightyVac, lungs, etc) and see if applying vacuum to the IP
will shut the engine off.

If it does, then the problem is somewhere in the valving and
piping.

If not - it's the IP thingy.

Well, we picked up mao's 'spare' Merc and it's ummnhnot quite what I
expected, I wasn't expecting a showroom condition example but.anyway I
attached a couple of pics for your viewing pleasure.
After we put some air in the tires and jump started it, one of the fuel return
hoses was leaking, luckily Dan had some hose that fitted and chucked some in the
boot, in case some of the others start to leak, along with some tools for
roadside repairs.
It drives reasonably well, except for a bit of vibration at highway speeds but
that could be the tires? Touch wood it will get us around the place.

There is something called a "Bully Dog" that the service guys mentioned.
Apparently it's some sort of tuning device that works through the OBDII port
and allows you to "tune" the engine and transmission for the type of
performance you want.

Pricey, but sort of cool.

Re: [MBZ] no cat

2010-06-08 Thread Tim C
I was thinking about this last night; even if you re-position or
upgrade the cats in a US '75/'76 450SL so as to avoid the engine
problems (as I think Wonko or OK Don or somebody had suggested in the
first place) wouldn't you have tampered with the emissions system and
therefore broken the law, anyway? You'd maybe be a pinch less likely
to get caught but it would still seem to be tampering, even if it was
an upgrade.

Guess you might have insight into this, depending what happened next. :)

2010-06-08 Thread Dieselhead
And if you are lucky with an MGB, you might spent 10% as much time on
the road as the SL. Remember the evil Prince of Darkness, too

I like the MGB roadster better. And it's 10% of the cost of the 230SL.

Re: [MBZ] Ford 7.4l Powerstroke Question

2010-06-08 Thread pm7088
I Assume you are referring to the 7.3L Power-stroke.

Very good engine, big power from 1995 technology. Mine has almost 300Kmi. About
$1500 in engine related repairs along the way.

Can it be 'chipped'? Yes, you can also poke a rod thru the pan if you like.

I'm guessing a 4wd F-350 weighs #7000 EMPTY. MAybe 16 mpg?

My 2wd F-250 gets 19mpg, ON IT'S BEST DAY.

Towing #11,000 camper, we get about 11mpg.

You get what you pay for.

Subject: [MBZ] Ford 7.4l Powerstroke Question

Anybody here have any experience with these engines?

I ask because one of the business owners drives one in a 3/4 ton 4WD F350. He's
complaining about the mileage (or lack thereof) and wonders what options he may
have to tweak it to make it more efficient.

I suspect it can be "chipped" and if he went to extremes have a Banks turbo kit
put on it. I know nothing about late model diesel, so I wasn't sure what
options, if any, he has.

Thanks in advance,

Dan

[MBZ] Monark injector nozzles

2010-06-08 Thread David Bruckmann
Hi gang,

I gather that the Bosch injectors are now generally crap, no longer produced in
Germany and with highly variable quality. There appear to be many accounts
online of this phenomenon.

What's everyone's experience with Monark nozzles? Apparently they are made in
Germany?
