Also, there is a shade-tree method for determining if your car's rear
end height is correct or not. You should find 19 inches measuring from
the center of the star in the wheel straight up and over the lip of the

I would proceed in the following order:

1. Check the rubber mounts at the top of the strut. If you had bad
spheres, these mounts may well be pulverised/absent. Check also the
bottom balljoint.

2. Test the function of the levelling valve (see instructions below)

3. Remove and test/replace the strut. A small leak is no definitive
indication that it needs replacement (see permissible leakage below).

Some clarifications/suggestions:

Service document 32-501 - Functional Description explains the role of
each of the levelling system components. This document is available at
bruckmann.com/32-501.pdf and is also on the 115, 107, 123, and 126
service manual discs.

-the nitrogen spheres provide variable-rate springing (only) when there
is hydraulic pressure present. They do NOT have the damping effect of a
shock absorber.

-the shock absorbers/dampers are simple flow-constricting perforated
discs located inside the struts. They travel back and forth on the end
of the piston, constricting flow in both directions. They don't normally
wear out because there are no moving parts. I suppose it is
conceivable that flat spheres could damage the dampers (eg sudden
pressure increases over bumps causing the o-ring around the damper to
blow out).

-the strut seals can eventually wear out, and will do so quicker if your
cells/spheres are flat because of sudden pressure increases. Poor
maintenance (infrequent fluid/filter changes, dusty roads) can shorten
the life of the seals. A bit of leakage is permissible, up to 0.4L /
10,000km.

-flat spheres will also destroy the ball joint at the bottom of the
strut as well as the rubber mounts at the top.

The latter is why I'm asking whether you feel the jarring, or whether
you are just hearing it. If you just hear it, it could be the ball joint
or rubber mounts.

If you are so inclined, it is possible to check the struts for correct
damping function. This is described in another service document 32-510
- Checking spring struts.

Here's an easy way to check that the levelling valve's base pressure is
working correctly:

1. Raise the rear of the vehicle on ramps (better yet over a pit) and
shut off the engine. Make sure the ramps are high enough to allow you
sufficient space not to be crushed when you lower the car's hydraulic
pressure and it drops a couple of inches!

2. Disconnect the leveling valve's lever from the sway bar. Put the
lever in emptying position (towards the ground; away from the bleed
screw) and leave it there. The car should NOT DROP. Then measure the
height of a specific point on the car relative to the ground. Wait an
hour or two.

5. After the delay (with engine off), measure the vehicle height again.
It should be exactly the same. If it is NOT, you have a leaky base
pressure valve.

The next step is important:

6. Engine off, position a drain pan and relieve the base pressure by
opening the bleed screw on the levelling valve. The car MUST DROP
significantly. Measure the height. If the car did NOT drop, your base
pressure valve isn't working. A non-functional base pressure valve will
result in a lower-than-normal ride height and poor damping, which is
most often resolved (incorrectly) by setting the levelling valve to
fill until the correct height is achieved. That hack leads to knocking
noises, unstable ride height, and incorrect damping behaviour.

Note that the base pressure valve is internal to the levelling valve and
operates completely independent of the position of the fill/drain lever.
The bleed screw is normally the only way of relieving the base pressure
(aside from opening one of the hydraulic lines). There's an MB rebuild
kit (used to be about $100) for the levelling valve that may revive it.

You may also find that the behaviour is temperature dependent (worse
when hot). This further implicates the base pressure valve, which will
leak more when warm, causing lower pressure and generally bad behaviour
in the system.

No AC. No fluid coupling either as this is a 240D.
I've thought about the aux fan but I have my doubts that it would provide
enough air flow at speed to make a
difference. Remember this is only a problem at speeds ABOVE 60mph, theres lots
of airflow over the radiator at that
speed.

I'd thought about a water mister too but my conclusion has repeatedly been that
to make it worth it for an hour
commute I'd need so much water that the weight of the water would become a
problem. Its easier just to drive
slower...

Yesterday's commute showed that the new radiator hoses and cap probably helped.
On the way to work it was cooler
than it has been (low 80's instead of mid 90's) and I could run as fast as I
wanted (well as fast as a 240D can)
with no troubles. On the way home I could run faster than I could before (back
in the mid '90s for temp) but still
had to ease off to keep the temp in check.
I need to go buy a 1 1/6 wrench but today I'll install the oil cooler again.
Monday we'll see if it makes that
much difference.

Two questions:

Do you
have AC and are you using it?

2nd Question, if you do not have
working AC do you have the AC aux fan? Put a switch in to permit you to
manually
turn it on so you have more airflow through the rad.

Also
a suggestion to make sure that the main rad fan is working correctly.
Fluid coupling OK?

Another possible answer if you only have
issues during really hot times is to put in a simple system to spray
some
water onto the rad. I think some people have used a windshield
washer setup with a pipe accross the top of the rad
with small holes
drilled in it. Turn on the pump and spray some water onto the rad -
should help bring temperatures
down somewhat.

Drag racers used
something like this to cool the engine after a run down the track. I am
sure I saw this in a Car
Craft mag years back.

No. The battery that blew on me was from an external spark. the
invisible flame went inside the battery. The battery jumped up about
a foot to eye level as it blew up in my face.

There must have been hydrogen gas and a spark. The hydrogen gas
may have been in the battery box from when she was driving the car.
The spark came when she tried to start the car.

H2 had to be inside the battery, as did the spark. The box was
just fine, but the battery case itself was fractured.

daughter (who is driving) to pull over at the rest stop/McDonald's, as it
was not very far in front of us, thinking that the tranny fluid leak (has
been seeping) had gotten away from me, and we need to add more fluid (in the
trunk). Open the hood and first thing I see is the serpentine belt is only
1/4in wide (but still in place), and the left side tranny fluid cooling hose
is cut clean in two.

The kids in the front heard a flapping noise shortly before the tranny
sighted down, but I couldn't hear it from the back seat (teaches me to let
my kids chauffeur me around the country). Never heard the belt squealing,
like an accessory (the A/C compressor?) had seized.

The rear of the car is oily, there's a growing puddle under the car, and
we're 50 miles from home, on a turnpike.

We got it towed home on one of those flatbed wreckers. The wrecker driver
commented that Mercedes don't usually break down, what happened?. He does
tow a lot of Volvos though ---

Anyway, I get to try to figure out why the two year old belt broke in the
morning. Fun.

As far as the self leveling part, I will measure to see if the rear height
is correct (19) per Max' advice. Otherwise, the car never sags during
periods of rest/disuse.

Per chance, is the hard side the now slightly used

Your description exactly fits my experiences with tired
accumulators. Two cars, so far. And since neither of them have
strut troubles, I have no experience there.

Does the self-level part work right?

Re: [MBZ] It's always something...

2010-07-12 Thread LWB250
When I did generator work we used to see battery explosions with some
regularity. Here's why:

When the electrolyte gets low in the battery (from being constantly charged, as
stationary duty batteries are) the tops of the plates get exposed. When a
large load is applied to the battery, as in when the engine cranks, there can
be a spark or arc across the exposed plates.

Since there is most likely some hydrogen present in the cells, this ignites,
causing a pretty spectacular explosion that usually rips the top of the battery
off.

A good reason to be checking the electrolyte levels on a regular basis.

I haven't found this to be as much of an issue in automotive applications,
probably because the batteries in such an application aren't on a charger 100%
of the time like a stationary engine battery is.

No.  The battery that blew on me was from an external
 spark.  the
invisible flame went inside the battery.  The battery
 jumped up about
a foot to eye level as it blew up  in my face.

There must have been hydrogen gas and a
 spark.  The hydrogen gas
may have been in the battery box from when she was
 driving the car.
The spark came when she tried to start the car.

H2 had to be inside the battery, as did the
 spark.  The box was
just fine, but the battery case itself was fractured.

Also, there is a shade-tree method for determining if your car's rear
end height is correct or not. You should find 19 inches
measuring from
the center of the star in the wheel straight up and over the lip
of the

fender to the chrome/rubber trim strip. Plus or minus 0.5 inches is
probably acceptable.

Re: [MBZ] What is this slow thing?

2010-07-12 Thread Rich Thomas
When I was in high school some local charity had a sale of retired
taxis, all Checkers. They had washed out the insides and did an Earl
Scheib paint job on them, I think they were all baby blue and actually
looked kinda nice. One of my friend's dad bought one for him, I think
paid $100. That thing was awesome, we called it The Bus. He could
get at least 10 or 12 kids in it and run them home after school. I
think after he went off to college it trickled down to his sister for a
couple of years, we came home for some holiday and dad had sold it and
bought a new, I think Toyota Corolla, the first year for them. The
sales guy sold him on it as being sporty yet economical. We thrashed
that thing unmercifully, and it seemed to do pretty well. His sister
had it until she went off to school, not sure what happened to it, it
might have been thrashed out.

Aside -- my friend's dad was a obstetrician, one night he had to go to
the hosp at like 3AM, he went out and got in his brand new Lincoln
Continental (dark brown, suicide rear doors) and when he slammed the
door a bottle of dandelion wine we had made and stored in his garage
exploded, showering the new car with glass shards and nasty sticky
stuff. He was wicked pissed to be sure. It was lucky we were off at
college or he would have killed us. As it was we heard about it several
times, I tried not to visit for a year or so when he was around.

That little turnbuckle thingie that connects the valve with whatever
else under there might be broken too, it has some plastic inserts at
each swiveling attachment point, those things break and wear out (like
mine did up the street from my house, the car looked like a 65 chebby
with air shocks and rode like a log wagon). You ought to check that
while you are crawling around under there.

It would be nice if eBay let you set up a personal kill file like the

killfile them and its as if they don't exist.

Somebody sold one of the original AMG Hammers for a few thousand about four
years ago. It had a wrong engine and was in the process of being rebuilt.
The buyer managed to track down a Hammer engine, which just happened to be the
very engine that came out of the car, and was restoring it fully. I guess that's
more fitting than the car falling into my hands and becoming a diesel.

Somebody sold one of the original AMG Hammers for a few thousand about
four years ago. It had a wrong engine and was in the process of being
rebuilt.
The buyer managed to track down a Hammer engine, which just happened
to be the very engine that came out of the car, and was restoring it
fully. I guess that's more fitting than the car falling into my hands
and becoming a diesel.

Nothing obviously wrong with the rear valve either.

That little turnbuckle thingie that connects the valve with whatever else

Per chance, is the hard side the now slightly used
accumulator? That is, the one that was in service along with
 the used one?

Your description exactly fits my experiences with tired
accumulators. Two cars, so far. And since neither of them have
strut troubles, I have no experience there.

Does the self-level part work right?

Re: [MBZ] stupid ebay sellers

2010-07-12 Thread Hendrik Fay
Well I don't think they are breaking any ebay rules, so not much that
can be done about em.
Guess if you are looking at general car parts listings you are going to
come across this sort of thing.

The only way to solve that is to narrow your search.

who went to the u pull it yesterday and found a 300SE to rat parts off

Manfred,

Is the height difference not present when running?

This is after standing a day or more. It doesn't change after it
reaches these figures, till you start and drive again. Can the
base ride valve be bad on only one side?
