Hi Rolf,
I don't know specifics on any mechanical issues, but I believe it was the
same V8 and 5 speed used the that vintage of S Class. I think it was quite
a well sorted out package in general. There are lots of them running around
here, used in all the varied climates we get. The one think I

Thats what I wanted to hear. Its been around 75F ambient here in the mornings
and the '78 REQUIRES 30 full seconds of glow for a nice easy start. My '83
required more like 15 seconds...
Sounds like Hammie's wiring plus the correct plugs equals starting excitement.

little to do with each other... ;)

Actually, now that I think about it, the connectors on the 94 car have a
plastic connector deal on it that snaps onto the fittings on the pump.
The ports on the parts car pump are just straight ports sticking up and
are smaller that the plastic connectors on the hoses from the car.

I don't know if this helps, but they do make barbed plastic fittings with
several different sized barbs (stepped) on each end. Get a 1 1/2" hose that fits
on the pump. Cut back one end of the universal fitting to fit that hose. Cut the
other side of the universal fitting to fit the hose from the
I guess the vacuum pump in my 94 is bad. It just clicks when you try to
activate it. I pulled one out of a 92 or 93 parts car and to my
surprise the vacuum connections are completely different. The one out
of the parts car has a vacuum block that the many vacuum lines plug
into, which then s

I was visiting our local dealsership and one of the salesmen was looking for
a place to recommend for repair of Becker radios for older Mercedes cars.
What experience have any of our Listers had with repair of Becker Radios and
do you suggest any repair sources.

There used to be a kit to convert to parallel pencil glow plugs.
They work much better, since they get hotter faster.

So, how to retrofit yours depends on how it was originally wired.
It sounds like it's far from original now.
I vote for sticking the entire system, minus the too small plugs, from Hammie in
the thing.

I have not had an older 123 240D with series plugs. On the older
models, with the pull knob to glow, start, shutoff...(called a shaker
system because of the glow indicator that looks like a saltshaker
top) all you really need is the 4 plugs, and to make up heavy wires
for the parallel system.

So one thing I've realized about Dwight's 240D is that if/when I buy it it'll
need a glowplug retrofit to fast glowplugs and I'll need to strongly consider
swapping in the relay system from my '83.
Right now its got a button that goes to a Ford solenoid that activates the
series plugs. It works
