[MBZ] OT Rant (was F-16 Dead-Stick Landing.......NOW training/education)

2011-02-04 Thread John Reames
That is one bone I have to pick with our schools system(s); they do not
promote, foster, or encourage those that attend to acquire the skill of
teaching themselves; it almost seems like it is viewed as undesirable and
therefor quashed at a very early stage.

But then the true understanding that follows questions is too resource
intensive when rote memorization and a firm pedagogical style are sufficient to
ensure that most students can pass the tests...

Research, exploration, experimentation, and questions are good things IMO.

The schools system(s) don't seem to know how to deal with those that do teach
themselves; my son is learning how to write the numbers from 1 to 5 in
school, whereas he has been asking his grandmother to buy him more (arithmetic)
workbooks for home.

I have half a notion that a Jetsons-like future MIGHT be possible if kids
thought teaching themselves was fun and we could feed the resulting (voracious)
appetite (for knowledge) at whatever pace worked for them.

I'm not advocating making kids spend all their time learning; I am a proponent
of letting kids be bored by unstructured playtime... I believe that they
naturally want to explore the world around them. Of course, we can always
cheat by asking them questions that they can figure out on their own by
research and experimentation, be they physical or gedanken experiments.

Whatever happened to kids learning to read and then choosing to read a
dictionary or an encyclopedia? (or books on art, science, etc, or sitting and
listening to music?)

Can we complain about what kids learn when they aren't being guided or taught?

-j.
(Dad of a 4.5 yr old who has asked hard questions such as What is inside a
bubble or Why is fire hot?; I hope he continues to do so!)

BTW, in these days of On Demand(tm) TV, it must seem strange for a kid to
shut the TV off and go read or do something interactive.

questions and then having to go off and figure it out, with guidance from a
prof. I actually did very well at that. Then I went to MIT. About 3 weeks
into the first semester I had an Oh S??? moment when I realized I knew a
lot of stuff but had no idea how to use it,and really did not know how to
learn on my own. I had this epiphany that it was now up to me to teach
myself, using various resources available (profs, fellow students, the
library, etc, books, etc.). I actually had to work at it, and it was hard
and not very pleasant, mostly. This was apparently the general mode of the
place, very different from where I had been. I did recall that one of my
favorite profs in engineering school had been BS/MS/ScD at MIT, and at that
point I also realized I should have paid more attention to the guy and used
him more. I survived the year or so, and it was the worst best thing I have
 ever done.

So to this day I continue to educate myself about various things, even from
 Chairman Mao's Little Red Book...

[MBZ] 560 SEL

2011-02-04 Thread Jim Cathey

So I've been driving the 560 SEL lately and it seems to me that it has
one other odd behavior to go along with its variably-high and
sometimes rough idle: as it's warming up it is somewhat puny and rough
running, but as the engine temperature gauge approaches normal
operating temperature it's almost as if a switch is flipped and the
car surges forward a bit and smooths out. It's more responsive to the
throttle and stronger, you have to back off the pedal a bit. I'm not
certain, but it may be that the idle is not really that high until
then. I'm wondering if one of the engine warmup sensors is off, or if
what it's hooked to is broken or maladjusted. I should look into this
sometime.

Fortunately there was a Charleston City police officer there who saw the

I write this because the cyclist, Sam ***, is from Greer, where he and his

Re: [MBZ] 560 SEL

2011-02-04 Thread E M
I think your car has a WUR ? Maybe it's sticking a bit. I believe it has a
bi-metal strip and an electrical connection. They're usually mounted on a
warm part of the engine, so if the electrical portion fails, the housing
will still get warm from the engine mounting, and activate the bi-metal
strip. If it's running too rich at first, if will feel like it's bogging
down when you get on it. As it leans out, performance improves.

Maybe check the O2 as Mitch says, they fail in the rich mode. I've found
though, if they are bad, when you get on the gas, they bog down as well, as
the system goes too rich.

Just a shot, hope someone with more knowledge can help out.

Daughter's 380SL ran fast at idle and variable speeds. We found the
timing way off, and fuel turned up high.

I found the vacuum lines all messed up. Connecting them properly
didn't seem to make a difference. Idle air solenoid is sticky.
Kleb was supposed to bring me a replacement. Still don't have it.
Still doesn't run the way I think it should. Now it tends to die at
idle. Seems like there are some similarities to your 560. Maybe
there is a clue here for you. I am interested in your findings later
on.

So I've been driving the 560 SEL lately and it seems to me that it has

2011-02-04 Thread E M
My understanding is, the real purpose of the O2 is to keep the air and fuel
metered at the proper stoichiometric ratio that the cats require to
operate. So I would guess if you don't have cats on your car, you probably
don't have an O2. With computers, they can help to workout the driving
needs, and adjust the fuel and air as required, but primarily always within
or close to that magic figure 13;1 or14:1, something like that? It will go
outside these parameters at times when needed, like starting up, or under
really heavy load, where it will go rich as needed.

That's my understanding anyway, but I'm no engineer.

Yes - the constant fight between cars and bicycles. When riding a bicycle
on a street without bicycle lanes law says your a motorist. Ridding a
bicycle in a bike lane means your a motorist using a restricted lane, no
different than a HOV lane. Your on a bike you entittled to that lane. As a
cyclist what bothers me is the riders who can not decide - I'm a pedestrian
(ridding in the sidewalk) no wait, I'm a motorist, ridding in the street.

Unfortinitly, in most metropolitian areas we do make it very difficult to be
a cyclist. Bicycling should be encouraged as it is good for us as people,
but also good for our earth and our communities.

When I had my bicycle shop I had a client who came from New York City. She
commutes on her bike, every day of the year, 22 round trip miles. Snow,
Rain, Sleet, anything she is on her bike. Never been hit, had a couple of
flat tires, ran over a dead Deer in the dark and bent her frame, but she has
ridden as many miles in the past 20 years as most of us have driven. She is
in incredable shape, and has alot more extra $$ than I do.

Re: [MBZ] OT Rant (was F-16 Dead-Stick Landing.......NOW training/education)

2011-02-04 Thread John Reames
Instead of disagreeing with you, I will instead wonder what McCarthy would
think of the idea of everyone being treated as if they were an interchangeable
little cog in a big machine.

If you look far enough down that road, you can probably see that sanitation
engineers would had salaries that are the same as neurosurgeons, since that
would give the neurosurgeons an undemocratic advantage. Likewise, ownership of
real property allows groups of like people to cluster together, resulting in
unequal cultural and social experiences between different groups.

Wasn't the marketing phrase something like America, Land of Opportunity?
Disallowing, preventing, or frustrating the ability to excel with hard work
seems the antithesis of that. History shows that everyone has different skill
levels in different areas; where would we be if the strongest of Thoreau's
skills were held to even some average level, or perhaps if Tesla, Einstein,
Watson and Crick, Morse, (William) Hammon, Salk, Goddard, Faulkner, or any of
thousands of others were averaged

Correct me if I am wrong, but normal is sometimes used in lieu of arithmetic
mean (AKA average). This is a point that lies on a curve; the curve is to
represent some quantitative measurement of a population.

What is the area under a singular point under a curve? (Isn't the area under a
point effectively zero?)

Doesn't this mean that it is in fact aberrant to be exactly average? If we
extend average to mean a range of acceptable values that includes the
arithmetical mean, then don't we get back to some people being disadvantaged
relative to others?

Yet it seems like excellence is spoken of... If no one can be disadvantaged
relative to others, can you even have a concept such as excellence? Isn't
excellence related to exceeding or getting ahead of others, who might then
be considered to be disadvantaged?

I don't hold any views, however I do have some questions (such as above) that
do not seem to have official answers. This is why I do not think that this will
fail, but I do wonder what I am missing that will make this thing work...

I bought this on ebay after having a few (too many) drinks. Was located in
Mississippi and I towed it back. Gutted the interior (looked like a meth lab had
been in there). Needs a new injection pump or the existing one rebuilt. I am
looking for this to go to a good home to someone who can get it running again
and usable. NOT THE SCRAPPER. I only paid $800 for it and have about another
$1200 into it. Just looking to get some of my money back and hopefully find a
good home. Has a om314 engine with a 5 speed transmission. This is your chance
to own a dually mercedes! Will need to be towed.

Re: [MBZ] Ford Escape Hybrid

2011-02-04 Thread Allan Streib
Friend of mine has an Escape (non-hybrid) and has had a series of problems with
it, mostly engine/drivetrain related. I generally like Fords but I think the
Escapes are cheaply constructed. Have not really looked at the latest versions
though.

Son bought a Ford Fusion Hybrid and he's very happy

He drove from Nashville to Orlando at speeds of 75-80 mph
and got 37 mpg. He's a munufacturers rep and puts a lot of
 miles on his cars.
Don't know anyone with an Escape Hybrid or how similar
 they might be.
I would like the Fusion because it's larger than most high
mpg cars and is heavier; about 37xx pounds.

I drove it to town and back and found that it has adequate
leg-room for a tall man (6'4) which can't be said for a lot
 of new medium size cars.

I spoke with a buddy about a roads issue in our part of the world, I
sent him this link, and he said at some time in the past they used this
tactic to question some study done by a Florida company (for a SC
project) that was not a licensed PE in SC, and it bunged things up for
some time until the FL outfit got their SC certs, and could re-submit
their report with an SC stamp. Not quite the same deal, but when you
get lawyers involved, this kind of thing is like blood to a shark.

I bought this on ebay after having a few (too many) drinks. Was located
in Mississippi and I towed it back. Gutted the interior (looked like a
meth lab had been in there). Needs a new injection pump or the existing
one rebuilt. I am looking for this to go to a good home to someone who
can get it running again and usable. NOT THE SCRAPPER. I only paid $800
for it and have about another $1200 into it. Just looking to get
some of

my money back and hopefully find a good home. Has a om314 engine with a
5 speed transmission. This is your chance to own a dually mercedes!

2011-02-04 Thread Rolf
Ive been getting the '87 300d up to speed. I am putting on a new IP this
week which will let me know if my theory is right or wrong about my
engine. Either way it doesnt leak oil like the on there does. I also
just got a line on a couple of #17 heads so in case I need a new one its
there. I put a 5 speed in it back in November and am very happy with it.
I need a larger clutch which will probably go in some time this summer
or maybe even next spring (it holds but I cant hoon it).

My 85 needs a new head as well. The replacement engine had a sticking
valve which is now sticking alot more than it used to, particularly at
light load low rpm. I will probably do the 85 before the 87 mostly as
practice and to ensure I have a spare car.

The 1991 300D is going to go up for sale soon. It needs some very minor
work to be perfect. 166k miles (odo is a replacement with 147k on it).
Probably going to ask 5k for it, paid 6 and drove it for a year. Its got
new Michelins and a brand new set of monark injectors (not just the
nozzles, the whole shebang).

I am pretty excited about the eurovan. Not the greatest gas mileage but
I love camping and fishing and wife hates tents

There's an important difference in the law: bikes can share a
lane with a car, cars are limited to one per lane.

Ahh. A difference.

So it is _not_ the same laws as the cars. I rest.

you rest mistaken.;-)

again, it depends on where you are. multiple vehicles in a lane is
perfectly legal in at least some states. (i haven't checked them all
again lately.)

Some selfish asses think that there's
something inherently wrong with being passed by a bicycle and
get irrational about it, declaring that the cyclist 'gave up'
his 'rights' somehow.

I don't mind that a bike has an advantage. I get irrational
about the cyclist who insist on enforcement of only the laws
that benefit them. If they can pass a car in the same lane when
the car is slow - then the car can pass them in the same lane
when the bike is slow.

that's perfectly reasonable; no need to get irrational. i've no
problem sharing a lane *safely* with another person, whether we're
walking, riding a bike, motorcycle, driving a truck, tractor or even an
old Benz car.;-)

And then - what about running red lights, and ignoring stop signs?

what's this got to do with anything? illegal is illegal, no matter
what you're operating. (FWIW, i see far more cars speeding and/or
rolling stops than bicycles.)
next time you decide to get upset about bicycles running stop
signs, decide for yourself if you really want to be waiting while
bicycles stop, and then accelerate at the rate of a human-powered device
to get out of your way. it's typically to your benefit if they're not
stopping as they're out of your way much quicker; this is the rationale
behind the 'Stop as Yield' movement that's already law in some places.

cheers!

[MBZ] Off the List?

2011-02-04 Thread LarryT
Hi Kaleb -
I haven’t rec’d any messages since before Christmas – what do I need to do to
get my messages flowing again?

BTW – Remember my question about my door lock tumbler? Finally found the right
PDF and learned how to take the door handle apart – once I took the handle
apart and off of he door, I could see where the problem was. There is a roll
pin that connects the 2 halves of the tumbler assy. – the roll pin had come
loose and allowed the Tumbler Half (the Key half) to come out of the car.

I finally learned the tumbler must go in to the matching piece in a specific
sequence and once I figured that out I was in business -- now we can
lock/unlock the door at the driver’s door and not at the trunk!

I was on the verge of taking the car to the dealer for repairs but my wife
convinced me to try one more time.

BTW, I still need a driver’s seat, seat belt assy. in case you come across one

Thanks -

Re: [MBZ] 560 SEL

2011-02-04 Thread OK Don
Reminders me of the 300SDL that had the idle control sensor and AC high
engine temp sensor connectors switched -- the AC would run till the engine
hit operatin temp, then it would turn off. The idle wasn't affected that I
could tell, but it was a great running 603. Both sensors were in one housing
- two connectors on top.

If yours are switched (I don't know what a 560 has - my M117 was a '78 450),
it might do something simlar, but to the idle circuit.

On Fri, Feb 4, 2011 at 8:32 AM, Jim Cathey j...@windwireless.net wrote:

I should look into this
 sometime.

[MBZ] OT Re: lane splitting

2011-02-04 Thread ernest breakfield

Mr/Mrs/Ms Dieselhead,

i don't know how this got to be about lane splitting instead of
lane sharing; some folks are obviously confused about the difference.
(i don't see Wogers posts.) in any case, both are far from the biggest
hazard drivers present to 2-wheelers, and both have proven to work quite
well in many parts of the world.

you're mistaken from the start when you ASSuME someone sharing (not
splitting) a lane is necessarily zipping and out of control,... (that
might be your perspective based on how you ride and/or a lack of
experience actually sharing a lane, and i confess to having little
sympathy for anyone who rides like that.)

as far as i know, in at least most states a driver opening their
door (innocently or otherwise) into traffic is liable for any damages.
i especially pity those special individuals that want to reach out
and touch someone, but they better be prepared for what it might cost
them in court and elsewhere. hopefully they'll get the kind of help they
obviously need.

cheers!

Strictly speaking, a well-employed person with a degree, is abnormal.

The definition of normal slides depending on the geographic location as
well, so normal is different all the time.

If we keep everyone normal, then we're on the fast track to our own
demise.

Saddly, I see our school system do just that.
