2011-07-09 Thread Michael Canfield
Really depends on just what you intend it for. If you want to haul a lot of
weight get a Ford or Dodge 3/4 or one ton. They do that best. If you want
someting that will haul household items, ride nice and get decent mpg then
look at a Chevy 1/2 ton with either the 4.3 or 350 if you want more power.
If you want a cheap diesel the older ford IDI trucks with the 6.9 or 7.3 are
cheap to buy and easy to work on, older Dodges are getting cheaper but they
are usually pretty whipped and sold for an engine donor, the Cummins usually
outlasts the trucks. The 6.2 Chevy trucks get great mpg but have little for
towing power. They are great empty or lightly loaded as you can pull 25mpg
out of them going slow. The 6.5 is a lot better for power than the 6.2 but
it has some electric components in the fuel system known to be problematic.
The Fords get worse mpg but have a lot more power for pulling a trailer.

have a fuel pump and tank.

There are several older Chevy and Fords in Craigs List between $1000 and
$2500. I'm only looking at long bed, standard cab. Maximum hauling
capacity
is the primary concern, followed by not needing imediate repairs.

[MBZ] 240D exhaust continuing saga

So unbolting the '83 exhaust at the flange worked well, the 2 bolts broke
nicely and it all came out. However I still couldn't get the front pipe

front exhaust pipe. A quick trip to FLAPS got me a 2 exhaust pipe adapter
which this morning I welded into place. My welding is definitely getting
better, I got only a couple little divots in it, none of which appears to go
all the way through. A quick spritz of grill paint should keep the weld from
rusting. I only expect this exhaust to be good for a couple three years
anyway...

Next step, getting the old rotten exhaust out from under the '78 while
preserving 2 rubber donuts, I have 2 in my spares pile... I'll order 2 (4
really so I have spares) more from Rusty next week so I don't have to trust the
used ones.

My 1975 Dodge 1/2 ton was quite reliable. Would always

Sucked for heavy work, though, the time we towed home a
tractor from the rental place nearly killed it going up
the hill. I thought we were going to have to unload the
tractor to get it up there. Was 2wd, auto, long cab,
short bed, turd brown. Was everything I don't like in
a truck, but was available from a friend and inexpensive.

But I needed 4wd, so away it went. Replaced by 1974 Chevy
heavy 1/2T. With 350, stickshift, 4wd, short cab, long bed.
Much more suitable for a utility vehicle, for me.

Re: [MBZ] 240D exhaust continuing saga

2011-07-09 Thread Jaime Kopchinski
Its too late for this advice, but in the past I was able to break and
exhaust system free from the manifold by dropping it down off of all the
rubber hangers and swinging it side to side a bit from the end at the back
of the car. The torque on that length of pipe is huge.

Just don't go too crazy or you might break the exhaust manifold. But this
is unlikely since the weakest point should still be the joint between the
manifold and exhaust pipe.

Of course, soaking it with lots of penetrating oil first is necessary.

[MBZ] A good 240D day

2011-07-09 Thread Curt Raymond
Got the exhaust into my '78 240D, reused all 4 rubber donuts, they were in
really good shape, first time I've ever seen such a thing. I'll throw one of my
spares in the trunk for the inevitable failure.
Had to cut down the pipe on the car a little, my new adapter didn't fit over it
as far as the old one and the exhaust stuck out from under the car, no big deal.

Then I figured as long as the welder was out I might as well patch one of a few
rust holes this car developed last winter. I'm taking a week in September for
bodywork but the more I do now the less I need to do later. I used a piece of
an old computer case, used microwaves being in short supply here. The computer
case metal worked out great as its thick and dense and therefore easy to weld.
I didn't cut back or clean up enough on the car though so the welds are nasty,
lots of fill work. Still once I slathered some rubberized undercoating on you
really can't tell.

Anyway bringing my $1500 car back to being a $1500 car. Next step is to put in
a Rusty order, with working AC it might be more than a $1500 car.

polish the cam lobes. if it is still rough, it will likely wear the

I would guess the FSM or another document will show what the

Further reading of the FSM says keep the lifters in their original

buckets of power, I think it was rate ~200hp.

When I was in jr high a friend's parents bought a Dodge pickup, it'd have been
around '88, figure a year or two either way. 2wd, 4spd manual, rubber floor
mat, vinyl seat, AM radio, 6cyl (I can't recall if it was a v6 or I6), so your
basic farm truck. Thing had nothing for power really but it was geared to the
basement and had a granny low first gear which meant when you drove you mostly
started in second. It was a great truck for hauling hay as you could idle it
down in first leap out, grab a bale, toss it into the bed, jump back in, shift
into second, roll to the next bale, gear back down into first and repeat. With
2 guys you could fill the truck super quick. Oh and how we did fill it, that
was a regular cab long bed and we'd stack the hay 5 feet over the roof of the
cab and the springs would bottom out as we eased it back onto the pavement for
the short hop to their farm.

If I needed a truck for hauling weight and didn't worry about speed thats what
I'd get.

partial to Diesels, but have been scared off by all the injector pump
 issues
with the US made engines - why didn't they use nice in-line Bosch
 pumps?

96-98.5 Dodge then, it uses the P7100 inline pump.

My 1975 Dodge 1/2 ton was quite reliable. Would always
start no matter how long it had sat. The 318 was gutless
and fuel-hungry, but the truck rode nice. Very car-like.

Some years of aluminum head Ford V8 have problems with stuck spark

forever.

Long bed short cab work trucks are hard to sell used, everybody
wants a back seat to use for a trash dump.

An old F-150 with straight six and 5sp wouldn't be bad to have, as
long as it isn't rusty. A friend of mine bought one new in '94 and
kept it until a leaf spring punched through the bed. 12 years of
Michigan road salt and minimal care from the original owner, and the
only major problem was rust. Still a good running truck last I
heard, he gave it to his daughter's boyfriend who redid the spring
mounts and welded a patch in the bed.

So it seems this is one that could have the rust issues... what I read
about this is that you can't really tell if there is a rust problem
without scraping off the body panel sealant that's used over the welds.
Is the problem common enough to warrant doing that?

There are actually two W210s here for sale for about this price, this
one and an E320 4matic wagon. Both are tempting in different ways.
