Ja, but

If you read the website you sent... it says upside down map... so
that implies you are upside down!

Eurocentric maps are normal in the US. However the pacific centric
and OZcentric maps are very interesting. We had pacific centric maps
in Hawaii, and there were some OZ centric maps. They really do
alter your perspective.

From OZ, the US is upside down and backwards. It is all in the perspective.

So, Hendrick, when you send pictures of your car here, they show up
upside down and backwards.

Anyhow, wish Faye a Happy Birthday from those of us here who are
upside down and backwards too!

Not so my friend, looking at this site will show you that there is a

The problem with cars like this that you know damn well that it has
been neglected, both cosmetically and mechanically.
However this is not always the case, my TE had been neglected (used
as a family truck) but was serviced by someone who knew what they
where doing. This is how I like to buy cars and is better than a car
that has had a million coatings of wax but only one oil change.
Obviously Roger would frown upon the condition my S124 is in, inside

I know people with fancy cars and they forbid their kids from eating
or drinking in the car and I reckon they love their car more than

53.12%, still high.

Boy, one little mistake will throw the whole thing off!

Reminds me of my high school calculus teacher who had us work out test
problems on the front sides of our pages of paper and then fold the test
in half vertically so the back side of the last page was showing and then
write our answers there. That was all he looked at when grading.

At 7.48 gallons per cubic foot, the fuel tank would have to be 6,381,375

Panamax dry bulk ships have daily operating costs around $4,000, according to
the quarterly earnings report for Safe Bulkers released earlier this week. Their
fleet average was a little over $4k a day for 15 Panamax ships and one Capesize
ship. Their Capesize is 292 meters, with DWT (carrying capacity) of 178,100
metric tons, their Panamax ships can carry 60,000 to 95,000 tons. It's hard to
imagine any ship burning a million gallons a day. The ship described in the link
is big, it sounds like it has a dry weight similar to the carrying capacity of
SB's Kanaris.

Re: [MBZ] 123 PS pump threads

2011-07-23 Thread Dieselhead
Well, some light was shed today on the uncooperative threads. I used
the die (5/8 NF - 18) on the threads of the tubing nut on the loose
hose. After a little difficulty starting the die, it went on and
cleaned right up. Took off most of the cad plating, but no big deal.

I tried the die on the nut on the hose on the car, and could not get
it to start straight. If I could chuck it in a drill press, with the
die flat on the table, I could probably get it started straight. But
because it is on the high pressure hose, there is no way to do that.
A vice to clamp it and a thread tap machine would work, but I don't
have access to that either. Probably will just swap hoses.

So, I tried running the tap in the pump thread. Seemed like it would
not start, so I tried turning it backwards a bit. This turned out
what looked like a broken off thread inside the pump.

It turned out that it was a helicoil. I tried starting the tap in
the helicoil, and can't get it started. It started raining a lot and
got real dark so I quit again.

I think I will probably swap the PS pumps, and use the loose hose.
But when I get a day with good daylight, I may try to straighten out
the helicoil and tap again.

1980 240D with 1981 engine

I went out to look for tap and die to clean the PS pump threads and
the hose threads. I thought it looked about the same as a spark plug
(postwar to 1980) so I was thinking it may be 14mm. Turns out it is
5/8 NF. Checked the measurements and pitch several times.

So, I guess that the original PS was adapted from 'Merican cars or
'Merican hoses off 'Merican aircraft engines. Same way the krauts
adapted 'Merican tire measurements (5 1/2 JK 14) Maybe they adapted
it from a chrypsler. I know the front wheel bearings are the same as
old chrypslers, and the wheel bolt

pattern seems to be adaptable to a chrypsler product.

Interesting stuff. What was the first MB with Power Steering? Did
the Adenauer have PS?

I find it easiest to start threads when the pump body
is loose too.

the issues related to modern vehicles not doing well on BioD is

Pull the tank off and let it drain out the bottom hole.

Then dump all sorts of solvents in there to try to clean out the
crude. I never did find one that really worked well. I tried
acetone, denatured alcohol, water and soap, brake fluid, ether,
and probably other stuff.

Re: [MBZ] Drain Front Brake Resovoir

2011-07-23 Thread Dieselhead
it will drain when you open the (rear) bleeders. It is set up to
hold fluid as long as possible for the front brakes, as they do
70-80% of the stopping. In theory that is meant to get you safely to
someplace for fluid/repairs when the rear brakes fail.

so, the front section fill first, then the rear section will fill.

You can flush out some of the black stuff by flushing with DOT4 fluid.

It is also a good time to consider a switch to DOT5. Keep in mind
that DOT4 and DOT 5 don't mix. If you switch, you need to flush with
DOT 5, and that takes most of a quart to flush until no more DOT4 (or
Dot 3) comes out.

Looking at the brake fluid resovoir on the 83 300D. It is a Girling.
I've suctioned all the fluid out from under the cap but the front
section is seperate and still full of fluid. Starting to take off
the front calipers to rebuild them when my Rusty parts get here.

How do I get the fluid out of that sectiion? It looks dark like old
fluid. I expect it will drain out when the calipers are removed, but
don't know how I will get fluid back it in. Doesn't look like any
connection to the rear compartment. I don't remember seeing one
like this before.

A local retired commercial fisherman has the rustiest MB inside and
outside I've ever seen.
Asked him why he parked it with one wheel up on the concrete wheel stop
in the parking space, and he said the driver side door wouldn't close otherwise.
It ran good and didn't have many miles on it.
He said it got rusty because he sometimes threw his wet nets on the seats, in
the
trunk, and tied down on the roof.

This would be a good MB to enter in the MBCA Car Show.  It should
make it all the way to the West Coast with a little help from members along the
way.
After the show, someone out there could park it in their backyard and then
enter it in the
Pacifica Rusty Car Contest. (See attached.) which is probably the only contest
that MB has never won.

Usually, pouring fluid in the hole under the cap fills the front section
first, then the rear section. (All the fluid is added through the hole
under the cap.)

Perhaps the nylon is stained and the section is really empty?

The article says, "it ... injects 6.5 ounces of diesel in every piston
for every cycle."

Since it's a two-stroke engine, that's 6.5 ounces per piston per
revolution.

Since it has 12 cylinders, that' 78 ounces per revolution.

Since it runs 102 revolutions/minute, that's 7956 ounces per minute
(which is 62.15625 gallons/minute).

At that rate, it's 477,360 gallons/hour.

The article says it produces 109,000 HP, which is 3.597e+09 ft-lb/min.
That is also 4,622,387.7 BTU/min.

Since one gallon of diesel has about 120,000 BTU, 62.15625 gallons of
diesel has about 7,458,750 BTU.

Since the input is 7,458,750 BTU/min and the output is
4,622,387.7 BTU/min, the efficiency is 61.97%.

The efficiency seems high, but the fuel consumption seems astronomical.
Where do the put all the fuel? At 31 knots, a trip of 3100 nautical miles
will take 100 hours, for a total fuel consumption of 47,736,000 gallons.
At 7.48 gallons per cubic foot, the fuel tank would have to be 6,381,375
cubic feet. If it were a cube, that would be 185.48 feet on a side.

Well, OK, for a ship that's 1300 feet long, that's not too much

But still!

[MBZ] MBCA and Pacifica Car Shows

2011-07-23 Thread Gerry Archer

Gerry

Can I bring my wvo burning 300d and my neighbors $450 td?
Betting they would be the talk of the club..hahaha

2011-07-23 Thread Hendrik & Fay
The problem with cars like this that you know damn well that it has been
neglected, both cosmetically and mechanically.
However this is not always the case, my TE had been neglected (used as a
family truck) but was serviced by someone who knew what they where
doing. This is how I like to buy cars and is better than a car that has
had a million coatings of wax but only one oil change.
Obviously Roger would frown upon the condition my S124 is in, inside and
out but for my purposes it is perfect (apart from the colour).
I know people with fancy cars and they forbid their kids from eating or
drinking in the car and I reckon they love their car more than their kids.

I'm using the FlexT9 input on the Evo4G - it does Swype like input, but on
the Android keyboard, and adds voice dictation, which works surprisingly
well. It's made by Nuance - home of Dragon Naturaly Speaking.

The wire goes down about 3 feet and hits a hard stop in the area of

This joker has been trying to flog that POS for a while, you'll be happy
to know that it is hovering for between 6K and 6.5K now, depending on the
day, well the seller listed the 116 at 6K, got no interest and then
re-listed it at 6.5K because it needs to go ASAP.
Oooh and you gotta love the timing chain hanging out of the M110, not a
good look.
Perhaps I should send the seller some details in regards to car body
removal companies.

[MBZ] 123 sunroof drain cleanout

2011-07-23 Thread Dieselhead
I came to the conclusion that the sunroof drains on the 81 have been
plugged for years. Rust and water level lines inside confirm this.
I have been looking for the drains and poking around with #10 wire,
and not found the drain exit out the back. Now that I have the roof
out, I'd like to get the drains open.

Is there any way to clean them bottom up? (I think they are hidden,
so I doubt this is possible.)

How do I find the exit holes for the drains?

On a 124, you can see them if you get the light just right. I can't
find them on the 123, and the book has nothing about the drains or
cleaning the drains.

I am running the wire back along the outer edge of the sunroof
cavity, roughly in line with the chrome slides.

TIA

Women are just stupid that's all their is to it. These women that gripe at
their men because they like cars yet they have everything they need should try
a man with a cocaine habit or who likes to beat on women, then maybe they will
have something to complain about

Yes. The refrigerant is OK, but the required oils (because R134a will
not transport mineral oil) are evil.

I thought PAG was evil, while PAO isn't evil but doesn't lubricate as well as
PAG.

So today I go out and load up a rust free 116 300sd with a good engine.
Bought it with a bad tranny. Got it home to get ready to crush tomorrow.
Somebody stole the tranny out of it. Funny.
