Can you get one piston out from underneath? At the very least if you do it from
above you'd only need to pull one head.

For replacing rings, all he needs to do is break the timing chain, remove
the affected head, remove the oil pan, remove the rod cap, and pull the
piston and rod out the top. He can do that with the engine in the car.
It's a whole lot more work to do it all.

That is an interesting question, can it be done in-situ?
It's #7. Pulling the engine would be much more work, even
pulling the hood (working alone) would be a chore. I've
always suspected a cracked ring, since the problem seemed
to come on suddenly. As I recall, though, that subframe

2012-05-18 Thread Dieselhead
If it has cracked rings, then most likely the cylinder is scored, and
replacing rings will do little to cure the problem. I don't have a
380SL to look at, but I am 98% sure that pan won't come off in the
frame.

I think you are looking at boring at least one hole, or a engine
swapIF the compression test result is repeatable.

I don't mind OM621 or OM61x rebuilds, but the SL looks like a
monster, and the hood does not lock in the up position and has to be
removed. I've never had any appetite for V-engines.

Two or Three layers of cardboard make it softer and warmer and you can

everything is available regardless of what the website says.

Rusty, I did check your site before I went to Rockauto, but the parts I

I believe I've eliminated the EGR valve as a culprit, though it looks
pretty rough/corroded externally. If I disconnect the vacuum, the idle
does not change; if I apply vacuum at idle the engine immediately
 stumbles and dies.

I'll try loosening the mount bolts and sliding the engine around a
little to see if I can get an improvement. Might try loosening all the
bolts a bit and starting the engine, to see if it will settle where it
 wants to be.

Two or Three layers of cardboard make it softer and warmer and you can
toss them when oil drips on them and keep the floor clean too.

I removed the hood, removed and rebuilt the engine, and replaced it all on
the '78 450SLC I had. It's not that big a deal. You do need helper to
remove and replace the hood. My wife helped me - not all that hard.
Of course, it took me almost two years, between life and scrounging for
the cheapest parts. The ALL the rubber in the intake system had to be
replaced. I'd loof for a good used engine, freshen it up as needed, and do
the swap.

On Fri, May 18, 2012 at 9:27 AM, Dieselhead 126die...@gmail.com wrote:

If it has cracked rings, then most likely the cylinder is scored, and
replacing rings will do little to cure the problem. I don't have a 380SL
to look at, but I am 98% sure that pan won't come off in the frame.

I think you are looking at boring at least one hole, or a engine
swapIF the compression test result is repeatable.

I don't mind OM621 or OM61x rebuilds, but the SL looks like a monster, and
the hood does not lock in the up position and has to be removed. I've
never had any appetite for V-engines.

As I recall, though, that subframe
is not my friend in this.

Rebuilding that Hercules engine has left me with no taste
for this sort of thing, let me tell you.

I did remove and replace the pan on the OM603 in teh SDL - I had to lift

Re: [MBZ] OT: Ford Focus rough/vibrating idle

2012-05-18 Thread Allan Streib
Tonight I worked on the idea that the mounts were not bolted down in the
correct position (the plates that bolt to the chassis have a bit of slop
built in, not sure why, I guess so they don't have to build the chassis
to close tolerances).

I loosened all the bolts, started the engine, put it in drive, reverse,
then back into neutral. Gave it a bit of gas in each position. The
engine did move around a bit.

Bolted it back down where it had settled, and I can't say that I can
tell a lot of difference in the vibrations.

Looking at the setup, I'm not convinced the mounts are responsible. I
think the old ones were tired, because replacing them resulted in
improvement, but not elimination of the vibrations.

One of the forum posts described finding the timing being off. The
timing belt on this engine is past-due for replacement. I wonder if it
has gotten stretched enough to jump a tooth? Wrong timing could cause a
rough idle.

Yes, Allen is a tradename for internal hex just as kleenex is a
tradename, but is used as generic for snotrag. Allen has been used as
 generic for internal hex.

Phillips is a specific design of cross-slotted screwdriver, but the name
of the design is unknown. It is simply a phillips screw or screwdriver.

Torx is also a tradename that has come to be used as a generic.

are gimped.
