No, it's the other way around... it happens more consistently, and the
noise is much more pronounced, under gradual acceleration.

Diagnoses is fried differential. One hour after I pulled off the road, it was
still too hot to touch for more than a few seconds.

Opened the fill plug, could not feel any oil. Put in about a quart of gear
lube, enough so that it started to run out the fill hole. Ten minute test
drive, and it's leaking all over. Groaning and grinding the whole drive.

Time for a new (used) diff!

I had a CV joint on a W123 go bad and make a racket that was a
lot like a dragging tailpipe.

On a different 123, I had a CV joint ball split. Nasty
vibration, not a lot of noise.

Both looked fine from the outside.

But your E300 could be a lot different!

Re: [MBZ] '87 300D low speed acceleration rattle

2012-09-13 Thread Jim Cathey

rattle or sharp repeated "thunk thunk thunk" noise, only when
accelerating between about 10 and 20 MPG. It sounds like something's
banging on the underside of the car circa the rear passenger
footwells, and if I put my hand back on the driveshaft tunnel when
it's happening I can feel the vibration.

Under heavy acceleration, but not light? Sounds like the center
driveshaft bearing support to me.

Perhaps waiting until tomorrow to diagnose would be a good idea. You will
be more rested and will have more light; both of those will make
diagnosis more fruitful.

[MBZ] Mobil 1

There is a rebate out for mobil 1 and there is also one out for Delvac.

If you buy on the NAPA sale, and get the rebate, you might get the
Mobil 1 at 2005 prices.

Re: [MBZ] Bad axle or differential

2012-09-13 Thread Dieselhead
Diving home from airport tonight my '95 E300 broke down. Either an
axle shaft or the differential.

While going up and over a large bridge, Wando river bridge on 526,
it felt like the brakes were applied and the car slowed momentarily,
and then a bang/thump from the rear of the car. After that noise
from the rear axle.

I drove on to my exit, then pulled over to have a look. Nothing
looks amiss, but terrible noise just creeping forward. ABS and ASD
lights have both come on.

I'm waiting for a tow now.

I had a used axle fail catastrophically on the SDL. Pulled out of a
stop light normally, Bang, and no go. (No ASD) Got it off the 4
lane to a side street with some help pushing. one of only 2 times I
have had to get a toe truck (Seattleism) in 40+ years of Dieseling.

Sounds like it may be your problem, but with ASD, you can limp.

In this case, I got a used axle from an okie (not Kaleb, cause he
didn't have one) and it smelled like plastic roofing cement. I
suspect that was put in to tighten up a bad axle. Got it hauled home
and waited for an axle from someplace else.

I wish our prices would swing back down that much.
It seems like they go up by something like 5 cents per liter but then go
down by a penny or two if the price drops on crude.

Our prices are headed that way. last fueling was 4.28/gal. California and WA
distillers have had technical issues which reduced supply. Tropical storms
will reduce raw oil flow into the south. Alaska is switching over to shale
from the easy to get crude which has been headed to asia anyway.

Agreed. It is not uncommon at all to buy diesel in the morning and come

Kinda like the horse industry. Used to be nearly everyone had
one. Now we use cars and trucks. Machines have no soul
compared to a horse. Sad to see the industry die.

That said, I like paper books too.

Yup. But how many can you carry with you? On the electronic
device in my pocket anyway, I can carry dozens of books. And I
can make the type size whatever suits me this reading. And it's
easy to have a couple copies.

They both have advantages.

Don't even think that it is safe that way because it is not. Artie did
not

inhale the fuel until it hit his mouth and was so repulsive that he choked
and involuntarily sucked fuel into his lungs. This is a guy who has been
siphoning diesel for 50 plus years. He says that he has gotten mouthfuls
of diesel many, many times but NOTHING, is like getting a mouthful of
ULSD.

The ONLY safe way to siphon ULSD is with something other than your body
creating the suction. Just plain don't do it! It isn't worth risking
your

life for a few bucks saved on a cheap siphon pump. Yeah, your LIFE, not
just the bad taste and a wife that won't kiss your smelly face.
THE DOCTORS TOLD ARTIE HE WAS GOING TO DIE AND THERE WAS NOTHING THEY
COULD
DO ABOUT IT! Damn lucky he is a tough old bird. He was down for 3 mos.
or

so, not even able to lift 20 pounds by himself before his body finally
started to win. Took another 6 mos. for him to be able to work again and
he still can not breath like he could before and it has been over a year
since it happened.

The trick to not suck with your lungs, but with your tongue.
Like pipe smoking, I'm told.

Take a deep breath, hold it, and use only your tongue to
generate the vacuum. It might take a few mouth-fulls, but
neither the liquid nor the vapor should ever be able to get past
your mouth. Should bad things happen and too much gets in your
mouth and you cough, you won't have to pull air (and vapor and
liquid) in before a violent exhale.

Still it's not a terribly safe thing to do - but neither is
driving. Or living.

imprinted the type onto a (gutta-percha?) sheet which was then fitted
into a a moulding setup where melted lead was poured forming a half
round copy of a page that was then mounted on a roller in the press
and automatically coated with ink during the press run.
The press was a huge, nearly two story machine with catwalks around
the upper areas. I remember the time when a pressman got his hand
caught between rollers and lost his arm up to the elbow. THe blood
and tissue was quickly cleaned up and the paper was no more than
thirty minutes late on the streets.
Trickery, practical jokes, and drunkeness were common in the newsroom
where I worked. As a teenager straight from a small farming town in
Indiana, I endured most of them. For example, one day a composing
room employee asked me if I'd ever seen "type lice". When I looked
down between the type slugs on a (galley?) of type, he slammed it
shut and I got a face full of ink and water.
One time the farm editor, who rode a bicycle to work, got drunk and
accused the makeup editor of hiding it. The makeup editor took off
his glasses and they went at each other in the middle of the
newsroom. With the farm editor drunk and the makeup editor
effectively blind without his glasses, I don't think either one got
in a solid blow to the other in spite of many roundhouse swings
before the fight was broken up. Turned out that the farm editors
wife had driven him to work that night and his bicycle was at home.
In many ways, those were happier times than todays fast paced era.

The only 2 ways I ever siphon liquids is either using a Siphon Pump or
by using a clear tube and leaving a low spot around my knees so I can
see the liquid start flowing and I can direct it into a container -
then it never gets close to any part of me...

ULSD probably tastes as bad as everyone says, I don't even want to think
about what gas with ethanol must taste like popcorn maybe? ;-)

Still it's not a terribly safe thing to do - but neither is
driving. Or living.

Re: [MBZ] Siphoning - was: The Joy of Mercedes Repairs

2012-09-13 Thread Michael Canfield
Don't even think that it is safe that way because it is not. Artie did not
inhale the fuel until it hit his mouth and was so repulsive that he choked
and involuntarily sucked fuel into his lungs. This is a guy who has been
siphoning diesel for 50 plus years. He says that he has gotten mouthfuls
of diesel many, many times but NOTHING, is like getting a mouthful of ULSD.

The ONLY safe way to siphon ULSD is with something other than your body
creating the suction. Just plain don't do it! It isn't worth risking your
life for a few bucks saved on a cheap siphon pump. Yeah, your LIFE, not
just the bad taste and a wife that won't kiss your smelly face.
THE DOCTORS TOLD ARTIE HE WAS GOING TO DIE AND THERE WAS NOTHING THEY COULD
DO ABOUT IT! Damn lucky he is a tough old bird. He was down for 3 mos. or
so, not even able to lift 20 pounds by himself before his body finally
started to win. Took another 6 mos. for him to be able to work again and
he still can not breath like he could before and it has been over a year
since it happened.

Re: [MBZ] Tek T922 oscil

2012-09-13 Thread Jim Cathey
Well the junk sale has some tektronics T 922 oscilloscopes for sale at
$20. Seems like a deal, but for the few times I think one would be
handy, I am not sure it is worth the time and space it would take up.
I'd probably have to spend $40 or more for some leads. What do you
all think of such a scope?

Google is your friend. $20 for a working name-brand scope
(no matter how lowly a model) sounds good to me.

http://www.antiqueradios.com/forums/viewtopic.php/t=3839

IIRC, a T922 is near the bottom of the barrel so far as Tek choices
go, but nothing really wrong with it either. And _any_ working
scope is way better than no scope at all! When you need one,
you need one.
