I didn't say that Steak 'n Shake's shakes were fake, just that the base is ice milk, not ice cream. The flavorings were all real when I was doing it, but then again, this was many years ago before all the froo-froo stuff they do nowadays. Anything at Culver's is definitely not heart healthy. [MBZ] xRe: 1982 300td everything is turning to crap
The other listers are probably correct, but here's my experience with an '83 300D FWIW: The inside bolt next to the engine on the mount was difficult to get to and seemed stripped, yet a short piece of allen wrench seemed to seat very firmly. I suspected that the longer allen wrench was not sitting straight enough to go all the way into the bolt head, so I bought a set of long allen wrenches which had a ball shaped hex head on one end (from Autozone?). The hex ball seated firmly at a slight angle, so I cut the opposite right angle end off with a Dremel abrasive wheel, put a quarter inch socket on the straight piece of Allen wrench, and the hex bolt came out. (The hex bolt had been previously treated with WD-40 and another solvent the day before.) On reassembly the hex ball tightened the Allen bolt securely. Doesn't lower bolt secure mount to sub-frame, threads are in mount? I'm wondering if the mount totally disintegrated, and part of it is turning with the bolt. -- Max Dillon Charleston SC '95 E300 '87 300TD If my memory serves, you have it backwards. On the older cars where the arm bolts to the mount from above, the thread is in the mount. On the 123/126 with the bolt going up from underneath the thread is in the arm from the block, and the mount only has a hole. Either way it is a steel/alum alloy connection, and when moisture is present, they generate a chemical bond. That is a real SOB to break loose without a flame wrench (not good around rubber and in proximity of the fuel lines) or by beating. The motor mount bolts should always be reassembled with neverseize unless you live where Grant does. Its hard to get decent 14 tires, especially V rated, especially in the wider 205/70 size. I bought a set of Vredestein Sprint Classics for my 450SLC 5.0 a while back, but they were over $200 each. But I wanted something special for that car and they were much cheaper than the Michelin XWXs the car originally came with. They looked awesome and handled great... I plan on putting a set on my W109. I have a set on Vredestein Hi Trac 2s on my 300D in 195/70R14 they're genuine summer tires which is especially hard to find in 14. I'm very happy with them and would get another set. Not sure if you can get them in 205/70R14, however. As you may have guessed, I have Vredestein dealer just down the road. Re: [MBZ] OT: Fledging electric car market in turmoil
Ahh but thats something that anti-s are using to snub electric cars. Apparently a Volt was left in a yard of some sort for 2 weeks after a crash and finally spontaneously caught fire. A regular gas car would have had its fuel tank drained, apparently nobody thought to disconnect the battery. Now electric cars are dangerous. -Curt --- On Mon, 10/15/12, Allan Streib str...@cs.indiana.edu wrote: From: Allan Streib str...@cs.indiana.edu Subject: Re: [MBZ] OT: Fledging electric car market in turmoil To: Curt Raymond curtlud...@yahoo.com, Diesel List mercedes@okiebenz.com Date: Monday, October 15, 2012, 8:04 PM Curt Raymond curtlud...@yahoo.com writes: Fires too, a friend on Facebook says electric cars burn to the ground as if gas cars never ever catch on fire. Re: [MBZ] No start Frosch
Jaime yeah, and I remember the days they could beat anyone's prices I bought lots of made in Germany Continentals, Metzler, Vred and Kleber tires form them that I can remember. That was really nice. Then something happened, and they suddenly were higher than anyone else. Not so nice now. $200 a tire? I won't pay $800 plus freight and installation for tires on a $500 car. I guess I could find some 126 15 hole wheels, but they won't look right on a 123. And, it is getting hard to find 15 tires now. I am wondering when the rubber band tar fad will go away. ___ http://www.okiebenz.com For new and used parts go to www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://mail.okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com

[MBZ] New starter, now dead voltage regulator?
Q sent a new rebuilt Bosch starter for The White Whale, installed that tonight. Went for a spin to pick up a prescription for SWMBO, took a jaunt on the beltway to stretch her legs a but. Alternator light came on, measured 12 volts at the battery with the engine running, so either the voltage regulator or the alternator has died. To top it off, engine has developed a nice lifter tick, after just a hundred miles or so on Dino oil. -- Max Dillon Charleston SC '95 E300 '87 300TD White Whale ___ http://www.okiebenz.com For new and used parts go to www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://mail.okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com

[MBZ] lost alternator on 87 TD
Check the positive cable on the starter -- typically, Benz attaches the main buss line there, and it can slip up into the cable bundle while you are wrestling the starter in, with the result that the alternator is NOT connected to the electrical system. You can get some contact by the loop on the end of the cable touching the bolt, but it can easily slip away, too. Regulator failure is also a posibility -- easy enough to check, just undo the two screws and take it out of the rear bottom of the alternator. If it comes right out instead of springing downward against the brush springs, the brushes are worn out. You can replace them or get a replacement regulator. [MBZ] New Starter, now dead voltage regulator
Only one plug on the back with all the connections. Regulator/brush set is pretty cheap and easy to replace from underneath. (2 screws) just have to be careful to get the brushes in and compressed without breaking them. One time I made a temp keeper with a piece of paper and tape. get them in place and then pull the paper to release the brushes. that makes it really easy. Just remember to unhook the ground cable at the battery before you start.
