How difficult would it be to set up an FTP server on a windows vista box? I
guess I'm looking for an easy software solution, preferably free, that is not
too difficult for a novice.

Pretty simple. I don't think FTP services are in Vista, so you probably have to
go third party or use a server OS.
Let me do some research and I'll see.

FTP services are available in the Business, Ultimate and Enterprise versions of
Vista only. If you have one of these it's a matter of going into Windows
features and enabling IIS and the corresponding FTP services. If you have the
Home version you will have to use a third party solution.

I've used HFS for a file server in Win XP, Vista 7 works good easy to
setup.
Description
You can use HFS (HTTP File Server) to send and receive files.
It's different from classic file sharing because it uses web technology
to be more compatible with today's Internet.
It also differs from

Now how would the starter connections have gone bad while I tinkered with the
regulator? I didn't specifically mention it but the car does start and run (I
did say it didn't charge).

I thought you had charging and dash light problems before removing the
regulator/brush
I've got a Home version, so I'll need a third party solution I guess. Will
take a look at your link below.
Thanks,

Russ,
Thanks for the idea, but I've got another piece of software which is looking
for an FTP server to send stuff to, not sure if I could make it work with a
different type of file server.

Is FileZilla server free? Didn't know that. We use it at work, but as a
client, not a server.
Good software.

The alternator light wasn't coming on during self test before starting so I
changed the bulb at which point it came on. No warning lights during running
but no charging either, battery voltage only.
I replaced the regulator and now I've got no dash warning lights other than the
fasten seat
You might also try CoreFTPlite. It's easy to use and free. Don't know the site,
just do a search.

Both the large and not-so-large wires at the starter can cause a no-charge,
no-lights condition.
The battery feed to the large terminal is normally a hefty black cable. The
less-hefty but still substantial red wire goes back into the loom, feeding the
entire vehicle, including the ignition

I forgot to add, the 5-cylinder engine is why I call it a 240D/3.0
