Re: [MBZ] OT Snowmobiles

2013-02-12 Thread Randy Bennell
I think the Snoman pass is somewhere around that but then it would also
require registration and insurance. Not sure what those run these days.
In addition, I would likely want 2 machines so it does get a bit
expensive for the basic annual costs even if one buys antique machines.

My father bought the 1970 Ski-doo brand new for about $700. It had
pretty light use and my mother sold it sometime after my father passed
away in 1983. At the time I really did not care but now I wish we still
had it.

Looks like its $105 for yearly registration and trail pass which for here would
be a lot but you've got a longer season than we do and more mileage of trails.

A snowmobile chaincase is really simple, the reversing gear is just a gear on a
sliding shaft. What happens is people don't wait for the engine to spin down
before they shift and they eat either the reversing gear or the gear it mates
to. The worst thing is all the junk you need to get out of the way to get to
the chaincase, the exhaust at the very least but usually some coolant plumbing
too, some Polaris machines have a liquid cooled brake disk there as well.

I've got a 1970 Olympique 12/3 (12hp, 300cc) which is one of my favorite machines.
I've had mine since 2001, I rebuilt the engine once but it probably needs it again
as I really didn't know what I was doing last time. It still runs but is down on
compression. I put a modern replacement track on mine, the 3/4 lugs are much
better than stock.
My Panther has a cleated track which is good in deep snow but awful on ice,
you'd think the cleats would grab the ice but you'd be completely wrong. They
make picks that go in the cleats and help but a lot of machines get converted
to rubber tracks instead as the picks can eat the tunnel if you're not careful.
Plus the rubber track is lighter.

You can no doubt ride on private property here as well. I don't have
that luxury. Cannot think of anyone I know that has more than maybe 8 to
10 acres. There are long trails accross country here but pretty
expensive to join the club so one has the licence to ride on the trails.
Not sure how the rest of it works. Have a friend who has 2 machines so
should ask him. He has one that is broken and we have promised to help
him fix it. I believe it is a fairly late model Arctic Cat and it won't
shift into gear or some such issue. (I think it has reverse so one can
back it up). When I had snowmobiles, they did not have gears. I had 3
different ones but all in the period from about 1970 to 1975, so long
time ago now. I had a Ski-doo Olympic 18 HP single cylinder Rotax, and
a 400CC twin cylinder Polaris and then a 400CC twin cylinder Mercury.
My father had a 12HP Ski-doo Olympic single cylinder Rotax. It was
probably the best of the bunch. Not super fast but light weight so easy
to shift around. I could load it on the pickup by myself. The fuel tank
was up front so the back was light. I could lift the back end up onto
the edge of the tailgate and then go to the front and lift the front end
by the skiis and just push it backwards. Those old machines did not have
much in terms of lugs on the tracks so they would not do all that well
in deep snow unless one could keep some forward momentum. Climbing hills
was not all that great unless one was in a really open area and could
keep the speed up. Friends had some of the machines with the steel bars
accross the tracks and they could practically climb trees with them.

[MBZ] Book, Wilton's stories

2013-02-12 Thread WILTON

Well, here's another one, anyway.

DING! DING! DING!
By Wilton Strickland

From 4 Feb 1978 to 8 Feb 1979, I was Director of Engineering, in charge of
all construction and maintenance of all physical facilities at Sondrestrom
Air Base, Greenland. For two to three weeks during the holiday season in
Dec and Jan, I was also acting Base Commander while our regular Base
Commander was away on leave.

At about 1 to 2 AM on New Years Day, I was awakened by a call from our
Security Police Chief, a very capable master sergeant. He reported to me
that our American civilian Officers' Club (O'club) and Base Exchange (BX)
managers had been in an altercation at the O'club, that he had arrested
them, had them both in jail, could I please go the jail, talk to them and
advise him as to how he should proceed. A few minutes later, when I arrived
at the jail, I found the two men sitting in separate cells with the doors
open. After talking to the Chief, a couple of other witnesses and the two
men, I surmised that the BX manager, a man of small stature and Hispanic
ancestry had been sitting at the O'club bar right by a bell that customers
could ring to occasionally signal that they were buying drinks for the house
or for those at the bar as local tradition may dictate. Meanwhile, the O'club
manager, a big, tall and robust man of African ancestry, had answered the
phone, also on the bar and near the bell. While the O'club manager was on
the phone, BX manager, who had had too much to drink, reached over and rang
the bell, DING! which by then was right beside the O'club manager's head.
O'club manager asked BX manager, Please don't ring the bell like that while
I'm on the phone. BX manager replied, I'll ring the bell any time I
want, and proceeded with DING! DING! DING! DING! DING! O'club manager
retorted with, I said don't ring the bell like that right in my ear while I'm
on the phone! BX manager retorted, again, And I said I'll ring it anytime
I want - DING! DING! DING! DING! DING! If you don't like it, come outside
and I'll TEACH you to like it! They proceeded outside, where BX manager
began to swing wildly at O'club manager, who was holding the much smaller
and shorter man away from him with one hand on BX manager's head as BX
manger continued to swing many times into the empty space under O'club
manager's outstretched arm but never making any contact. O'club manager
kept telling BX manager, Please stop! If you don't stop, I'm gonna hafta
to hit ya; I don't wanta hit ya! BX manage kept swinging; O'club manager
told 'im several more times, Stop, or I'm gonna hafta hit ya; I'm gonna hit
ya if ya don't stop! BX manager kept swinging wildly; O'club manager,
after several more warnings, finally popped BX manager one blow in one eye
with his fisted free hand.

When talking to BX manager at the jail, he at first would not open his eyes,
and kept saying to me, I can't see, I can't see! He blinded me! I can't
see! I wanta press charges! I can't see! He blinded me! I replied, If
you'll open your eyes, you'll be able to see a lot better. He kept
insisting for several more times, though, I can't see! I can't see! I
wanta press charges! I replied, Nobody's pressing charges right now.
Just open your eyes, and you'll be able to see. You can talk more about
charges and take care of that in the morning after you get some sleep, but
right now, you need to open your eyes and see me sitting here in front of
you. I need to know if you can see me. Just open your eyes and tell me
what you see. I finally got him to open his eyes and convinced him that he
could see much better with is eyes open.

After a few more minutes of discussion with each man separately, I got them
both to agree to ride with me in my truck to our dormitory, where BX manger's
room was directly across the hall from my room, and O'club manager's room
was just down the hall. I escorted them to their rooms and got them to
promise to go to bed immediately and not come back out until they'd meet me
outside my door at 1000 the next morning.

Next morning at 1000, I heard them laughing and joshing each other outside
my door just before they knocked on it. I answered the door immediately to
find them standing in the hall grinning and with their arms around each
other - the much taller, bigger man's arm across the smaller man's
shoulders; the smaller man's arm around the bigger man's back as far as it
could reach.

I immediately invited them inside and, after we all sat down, I asked BX
manager if there were anything he'd like to say to O'club manager. He
replied, Well, I did already but, yes, Sir, I'm sorry I was such a fool. I
shouldn't have rung the bell like that, and I shouldn't have made such a
fool of myself. I looked at O'club manager for any response. He replied,
Hey, man, I didn't wanta hit ya. I'm sorry I hit ya like that. I asked
BX manager if he could see OK. He responded,

A mere detail. A lot of cars came stock with XWXs and they don't look right

People who want XWXs want them for their appearance and because they were
OE on many cars in the late '60s. As one example, my friend CB ordered a set
for his Ferrari 330GTC because they were OE on that model and make the car
look right. Price didn't come into it and that's why people buy replicas in
the first place.

Re: [MBZ] MBUSA Roadside Assistance

2013-02-12 Thread Dieselhead

No Roadside service for me.

Last time I took a car to the MB stealership: Was scheduled to bring
it in at 8 AM. Sat there until 2 pm when I finally brought the car
in to work on. I saw it go out about 30 min. later. Got the bill
to pay around 3 pm. Was charged for 5 hours labor to replace the
steering flex coupler. (loosen 2 bolts, pull up the wheel, pull out
the old, in with the new, push it in, and tighten 2 bolts. )

I protested that they only had the car in for a half hour. Was told
that they go by the book and 5 hrs was the flat rate. Asked to
talk to the mgr. Got the same song. Pay the bill or we will take
your car.

Never been back to a MB stealership for service since, NOR have I
EVER recommended a stealership to anyone in the past 41 years.

The only good thing about it was that the mechanic was the top guy,
so at least he hopefully got a bonus out of it. But knowing the
stealership, the owner probably kept all of 4.5 hrs and paid they guy
for the 30 min.

Never bought a car from the crooks either.

I have bought several Kleb kars. 2 of the best of those actually
came from Kleb.

Free towing for 100 miles? not around this part of the country.

Last time I used AAA maybe 5 yrs ago, the free tow was something
like 2 miles. I had to pay something like $70 on top of the free
tow to get the car something like 20 miles to home.

Last time i paid AAA also. All those years I paid those bozos to
spam insecurance ads to me counted for nothing when I actually needed
them. they still send me insecurance spam.

MB Diesels are so reliable, that you and I are MUCH better off to
just pay the tow truck on the rare occasion we need one. On that
occasion it would have cost me $10 or $15 more if I had just called
the truck myself, and I probably could have negotiated that down
prior to the dispatch. Makes AAA worth $5 or $10 a year.
