Perhaps, but not much less expensive; the perch includes a piece of frame rail
and requires something like 40 /structural/ rivets to secure it into the car.

Plan on an alignment, as everything on that side must be stripped.

I think I paid $3k for mine.

Re: [MBZ] What of the W140?

2013-05-03 Thread Dan Penoff
Having researched this significantly, the W140 can be a wonderful car and no
worse or better than any other luxury car of its vintage as long as you do your
due diligence.

The two big ticket items, typically dealt with long ago, are the deteriorating
engine wiring harness and the infamous AC evaporator.

By the latest model possible and you can avoid both of these issues, as they
were dealt with by MB late in the production run, like 97 - 99, I believe.

They are very complex cars compared to their predecessors, but for the most
part trouble free. Due to the number if systems and their complexity, you want
to steer wide of any that have issues, and a PPI by a shop that knows this
model well is absolutely necessary.

I love mine and am quite satisfied with its reliability. I can service nearly
everything on the car, and repairs are no worse than they would be for older
models, IMHO.

Consider that in their day many of these models were intended to compete with
other high end luxury cars, like Rolls and Bentley. The appointments are very,
very nice as are many of the features. Add to that many of the systems provide
self diagnostics, so you can gather a great deal of information on your own if
you choose to.

I like mine so well I may start looking for a nice S500 sedan for the wife in
another year.

I always perceived the W140 as being a bit of a nightmare, but now that I am
better educated about the model, I find that they are no better or worse than
any other MB model of its day.

If you have specific questions, let me know. I don't think there are a lot of
W140 owners around here (compared to other models.)

If I could find a nice SDL, that would be superb. I am pretty sure that is
not likely to happen. Having driven what I think is the epitome of the w124
(unless it were the cabriolet) I do not want a repeat.

I do like the looks of the w140. Should have enough leg room for me in back,
as well as fit and finish the oriental cars lack. My neighbor finally sent
his '84 Accord to the crusher, but he got a 95 accord for replacement. Every
time that car lights off, there is that buzzy resonant tin sheet noise of
 something not secured right.

Any opinions on the W140 and what to look for or avoid?

The original accumulators were good for 5 years or so. The new ones are somewhat
variable.

The only way you'll get cushioning out of the struts is from the rubber mounts,
unless there is air trapped in them somehow.

Re: [MBZ] OT: The case for banning hammers [AND MACHETES AND GATORS] and registering owners

2013-05-03 Thread Dieselhead
As this is really off-topic, I don't feel too ashamed in saying that
maybe they should ban sports equipment (and perhaps dis-arm black
belts?)

How may people have union thugs beat with baseball bats?

along with hammers, machetes, and the stuff already listed, We should
ban Baseball bats, Lacross and hockey sticks, the game of hockey etc.

Then there are bricks.

Oh, and we must not forget to ban nail guns, Those do serious damage too.

But perhaps the most dangerous weapon is bathtubs.

Andrew, can you get your guys on banning all this stuff?

2013-05-03 Thread Curt Raymond
Not much lists for $17k anymore, Ford Fiesta maybe.

The base Jetta TDI I was looking at was $23k, Passat TDI starts at about $3k
more, Jetta wagon TDI is about $25k. Those are all base prices but there aren't
many options really, sunroof, DSG, premium sound system...

The VW diesel wagon (Passat) used to list for around $17k. What do they
cost now?

On Fri, May 3, 2013 at 9:17 AM, Curt Raymond curtlud...@yahoo.com wrote:

I was thinking about the longevity, back in the day when a 240D was a
500,000 mile car a VW diesel was a 250,000 mile car but that was also
when a gas car that went 100,000 miles was a great car.
Today just about any gas car can go 200,000 miles with just normal
maintenance so it seems reasonable that today's TDI should go 500,000
without much issue. At 30,000 miles a year thats still longer than I
 probably intend to keep one...

I recall a mis-matched set of used and new accumulators going in. Can't recall
how many years ago it was. The advice of the list (as I remember) was that the
used accumulator would shorten the life of the new one. I'm thinking thats the
case here...

Both accumulators were changed recently (last couple of years). I am
beginning to wonder whether the hydropneumatic struts themselves are the
problem. They don't leak, but I am not getting any cushioning going over
potholes and there is nothing else to blame. Any way to test their
 resiliency (if that's the word)?

The original accumulators were good for 5 years or so. The new ones are
somewhat
variable.

The only way you'll get cushioning out of the struts is from the rubber mounts,
unless there is air trapped in them somehow.

I seem to recall something wrong with the way the work was done a couple of
years ago but don't remember details.

Mitch.

I rebuilt one of mine that was leaking, and there's not much
in there. A piston with leak holes in it, with spring flaps
over them. Hard to see how any kind of failure would make
it _stiffer_. Springs fail by getting weaker, not stronger.

The original accumulators were good for 5 years or so. The new ones are

The only way you'll get cushioning out of the struts is from the rubber

unless there is air trapped in them somehow.

I seem to recall something wrong with the way the work was done a couple of

I rebuilt one of mine that was leaking, and there's not much
in there. A piston with leak holes in it, with spring flaps
over them. Hard to see how any kind of failure would make
it _stiffer_. Springs fail by getting weaker, not stronger.

Re: [MBZ] wagon rear suspension (was Re: Hammers)

2013-05-03 Thread David Bruckmann
The self-levelling system requires a base pressure to function. I believe the
function is described in 32-501.

Typically the base pressure valve (integral to the levelling valve but not
adjustable/influenced by the position of the lever) will weaken and you'll have
insufficient pressure in the system. It will then sag and may even
bounce/wallow, but it should be soft.

A very hard ride is either too much pressure (lever is maladjusted and car
rides too high) or spheres are shot (gas pressure has dissipated).

Car should ride at correct height even with lever in exhaust position. Moving
lever to fill will result in the car rising. Once risen, the car should stay at
that height even with the lever in the neutral position.

DO NOT ADJUST the position of the lever relative to the valve shaft. Only
adjust the lever's connection to the sway bar.

Spheres last five years at most, although they are rarely changed with such
frequency. Your local Citroen service person may be able to recharge the
spheres, but new ones aren't that expensive IIRC. You could quickly build a
test rig with a bottle jack - plans widely available for Citroen sphere
testers...

Re: [MBZ] Struts

2013-05-03 Thread Jim Cathey

The struts provide no spring action, because there is no
energy storage medium inside (unless full of air, and it
went in at atmospheric pressure and would be compressed
to minuscule dimensions by the base pressure). The leak
holes in the strut's interior piston provide the bulk of
the damping, but some is provided by oil viscosity through
the hose and into the accumulator.

The coil springs support the bulk of the weight of the car,
the strut's piston rod area (what goes through the seal)
times the base pressure supports the rest of the weight, and
as the system pressure rises due to oil being pumped into the
accumulator by the strut, compressing _its_ stored nitrogen
gas to higher pressures, the strut (like all springs) pushes
back harder. The strut, however, in conjunction with the oil,
is only a transmission, the force is all coming from the
compressed nitrogen.

If you have normal ride height and oil viscosity, and there
are no abby-normal occlusions in the pipes, if you have
extra-hard spring action it _has_ to be accumulator failure.
There's just not enough there for it to be anything else.

Going through my SEL the hard way was an education.

The strut was made to be serviceable, though it is never done.
Replacement only. The accumulator was not. If it were built
more like the strut, with serviceable seals and a hard piston
instead of a heavy rubber bladder, and a way to replenish the
stored gas, the system would never need new parts except for
seals. Small cheap parts, and a shot of nitrogen now and then
from the bottle, with the suspension at full travel. Good as
new.

The speed laws are there to provide some protection to the driving public.
We are not prepared to ban a lot of people with doubtful abilities and
we do not do enough to train drivers and to re-train and re-test

some of the accidents that happen like the one that just got Clay.

Re: [MBZ] 240D required electricals

2013-05-03 Thread Benz Hogs
BZT, partially wrong. None are *required* to start or run a
240D, they are required if you wish to have turn signals, wipers, or lights.

My first Benz, '83 300SD, had the regulator go bad around dusk during a
trip from AR to KS. We spent the night at a motel, called the Kansas
City Benz dealer to confirm the part was in stock, got a jump start,
then drove about 2 hours with minimal battery usage. When I pulled off
the interstate in KC, the battery was so weak that the turn signal
caused the speedometer to tick down about half of the actual speed.
While I was lying under the Gold Beast, the service manager came out and
asked what was up. When I told him, he says (in a thick German accent)
ya, da foltage regulator. I bring you a jump kit. He helped me jump
the SD and we were rolling less than 30 minutes and $35 after arriving
at the dealer.

I think we need to consider the real purpose of government. Is it to keep
us safe or to keep us free? The two conflict quite a bit.

Ron Paul recently said:
Sadly, we have been conditioned to believe that the job of the government
is to keep us safe, but in reality the job of the government is to protect
our liberties. Once the government decides that its role is to keep us safe,
whether economically or physically, they can only do so by taking away our
liberties. That is what happened in Boston.

Actually no, not wrong. If you want to CONTINUE to be able to start your
240D, you do need to recharge the battery (which is what I meant in my
reply to Loren -- my apologies for the poor wording).

Also, glow plugs being glowed helps tremendously when it's cold. It's
easiest to have the glow plug relay turn them on, but you could open up
the relay box and manually push the relay, or jumper from the relay's
output to the battery to cause them to glow.

You are correct, though, that once a 240D is started it will continue to
run without electricity. I don't know if that is true for more modern
diesels.

Probably a simple inverse function. The more modern they get, the worse
they run without electrons flowing.

For example, an '87 603 car like mine will run a bit rough if you
disconnect the electronic idle controller (aka EDS). I wonder if the 602

We are working on it in Florida. There is a guy over in St. Pete who has done a
fantastic job refuting all the government claims about their advantages, yet
they still voted them in against the wishes of their constituents.

A local DA has received something like 4-5 red light camera tickets and gotten
all of them thrown out. Seems that you don't have to come to a complete stop to
turn right on a red light - you just have to slow to less than 12 mph.

I know a couple of people who got them and challenged the ticket. Both got
dismissed.

If there was ever a bogus way of cleaning people's pockets I don't know of it.

Where did you source the parts for it?

On May 3, 2013, at 11:51 AM, Jim Cathey j...@windwireless.net wrote:

Good as
 new.

Caliper prices have more than doubled in the 10 years since I last bought

An ATE caliper rebuilt by CARDONE is $102.
An ATE caliper rebuilt by WORLD BRAKE RESOURCES is $69.

I don't know which of the rebuilts is to be preferred.

If you replace calipers in pairs, you don't have to worry about the
manufacturer of the old caliper (ATE or Bendix).

Re: [MBZ] OT: The case for banning hammers [AND MACHETES ANDGATORS] and registering owners

2013-05-03 Thread G Mann
You ask, I answer, tempered with a very old school education during which
study of the history of the formation of our government and the
Constitution was a required course of study over 12 years.

As founded and as intended, [study Federalist papers for legislative intent
of words used to write Constitution, come back to me in 5 years],
government was only formed to serve We the People for very specific and
carefully enumerated purposes. Much of the wording of Constitution is
dedicated to very specifically limiting the powers and actions of
government and very specifically ensuring all powers not specifically given
to the government SHALL [very exacting legal word] reside with the States
[who are also very limited by the Constitution in their powers] and to the
Citizens [spelled with a capital letter to annotate the superior powers
reserved to Citizens].

I was taught, and clearly understand, that ALL powers not specifically
granted to government, SHALL and DOES reside with the Citizens [legal ones
only]. Further, what is given can be taken back by the original grantor,
Said powers reside with Citizens, they are granted to government to be used
only under good stewardship. At ANY time, should the Citizens [We the
People] so choose, said powers can be revoked. The powers given to
government are neither permanent, nor non-revokable. They can be withdrawn
at any time the Citizens so choose, by any means deemed necessary.

As evidence of this power, see, 1st Amendment, 2nd Amendment, et al.

Government workers [and elected representatives] take an oath to uphold the
Constitution, before they can serve in office. This act of oath taking
manifests their agreement to the power of the document and the powers
reserved to the Citizens. Breach of oath of office holds serious
consequences. Unfortunately, We the People have failed to hold said elected
representatives accountable [POTUS on down, even IRS agents take the oath].
Failure to promptly execute charges does not relieve them from misdeeds. As
a function of law, there is no statue of limitation on fraud. Breach of
oath of office is fraud.

I relinquish the soap box to the gentleman from x.

The original accumulators were good for 5 years or so. The new ones
are
 somewhat
 variable.

The only way you'll get cushioning out of the struts is from the
rubber
 mounts,
unless there is air trapped in them somehow.

I seem to recall something wrong with the way the work was done a
couple
of
years ago but don't remember details.

Using discount fuel cards from local grocery chain, I save 20% on diesel.
Filled my E300 with 22.8 gallons @ $3.22/gal. Car returned 27.3 mpg.

Still smarts that diesel is more expensive than premium.

Around here regular is $3.85 and tax exempt diesel is $3.57. I have found one
