The C-code has less power (J and C are the letters in the

C-code from the factory, but I don't really know. There
were two versions of 3/4 ton Suburbans, the one with high
GVWR got the J-code engine while the lighter got the
  C-code.

Whats the difference between C and J? Can you modify a C to a J?

According to the smart folks at dieselplace.com:

j codes were made all model years. the J code stuff was
found in 3/4 ton and up. Differences were the injector pump
calibration and the opening in the pre chambers, along with
the egr junk that was on all c code engines. That's
it.same engine, calibrated with a little more fuel
   from the factory.

 I don't want a 1ton pickup, I guess a 3/4 ton Sub I could
 live with ;)

Suburbans are big. I've haven't been without one for 25

that could do it with any regularity would be something such as the
rolex oysterquartz, which was cut with extreme care.

bulova solved the problem differently. one problem of the quartz watch
is the battery drain as it ticks. the steps are taken in whole seconds
as otherwise you'd be going through batteries too frequently. you have
more inherent accuracy if you take more steps per second, as a
mechanical watch that takes 10 beats per second is inherently more
accurate than one that takes 6. bulova has solved the problem and now
takes multiple steps per second, whether 5 or 8 or whatever it is,
making the 20 to 30 second quartz accurate to within 10 seconds a year.

This is so confused, it's hard to correct each mis-statement.

As Peter said, the heart of a quartz watch is the quartz crystal. You are
correct that this needs to be cut precisely to get good time control.

The quartz crystal typically oscillates at 32,000 times per second. The
electrical output of the oscillator is digitally divided down to one
pulse per second. This drives a stepper motor that moves the second hand.
The minute and hour hands are geared off and moved by the second hand.

You are correct that the second hand could be moved more times per second
for a smaller distance each time but that this would require more battery
power. Watches could also have higher frequency crystals that are more
accurate, but this would require more digital division, which would
 require more power.

They really won't tell you the cost of January's coverage until January?
The deadline to enroll in the exchange for January 1 is December 15.
You have until the end of March to enroll in the exchange, so it sounds
like you're stuck buying January coverage at a mystery price from Aetna,
or signing up for dual coverage in January and canceling one when you know
the pricing.

BTW, is there any way to get your current coverage without handing a nice
fat commission to the Democratic party lobbying arm of AARP? Those
bastards used member money to lobby members to vote against their beliefs.

The good news is that with Obamacare's ban on age based price
discrimination, and requirement that the young sign up to subsidize it,
you should be seeing lower prices in the exchange and in your current
plan, if there are any young people in your current plan.

[MBZ] Computer question

2013-09-19 Thread Gerry Archer

A friends Dell P6754yPC desktop computer won't connect to the internet. I
fixed the TCP/IP but now Window7 says the rj45 modem is bad (the wireless
modem works okay). There's a lot of lightning in this area that often takes
out internal modems.
Since the rj45 modem is part of the motherboard, I'm wondering if I can
simply use an Intel PRO/1000 GT Desktop Adapter - PCI - 1 x RJ-45 -
10/100/1000Base-T - Internal modem or equivalent? This computer is
connected to a DSL modem.

The long motherboard socket where the Intel modem would plug in has one
notch. The Intel modem has two notches.
Motherboard description lists these slots, one of which is in use by a
wireless modem.

1 PCI Express x16 slot for graphics card
3 PCI Express x1 slots
1 PCI Express x1 minicard slot

Modem description says:

Compatible with x1, x4, x8, and x16 full-height and low-profile PCI Express
slots

Thanks,

Mine, too. I just opened a GP relay unit I removed from the '91 350SDL
coupla years ago; 'don't remember the symptoms, but I narrowed it down to
the relay, which I replaced, resulting in a good fix. When I opened the old
relay, a bad electrical fire-type odor emerged. The relay contacts look
very good; close examination of the circuit board with a magnifying glass
revealed coupla smoked soldered connections on backside of board.
Apparently, and as Jim said, one could easily wire the relay portion of the
device directly with manually-switched 12 volts, bypassing the circuit
board, continue to use the original, factory wiring and have a system to
glow as long or short as one wants. Obviously, this requires a relay unit
with a still-functioning solenoid/RELAY part - not stuck contacts or
burned-out coil, etc.

Mine, too. I just opened a GP relay unit I removed from the '91 350SDL
coupla years ago; 'don't remember the symptoms, but I narrowed it down to
the relay, which I replaced, resulting in a good fix. When I opened the
old relay, a bad electrical fire-type odor emerged. The relay contacts
look very good; close examination of the circuit board with a magnifying
glass revealed coupla smoked soldered connections on backside of board.
Apparently, and as Jim said, one could easily wire the relay portion of
the device directly with manually-switched 12 volts, bypassing the circuit
board, continue to use the original, factory wiring and have a system to
glow as long or short as one wants. Obviously, this requires a relay unit
with a still-functioning solenoid/RELAY part - not stuck contacts or
burned-out coil, etc.

Mercedes did series wiring at one point, gave it up for a reason

What Richard is describing is _not_ series. It is impossible
to wire the paralles plugs in series (so long as the engine
block is connected to battery negative) because the threads in
contact with the engine block is one electrical terminal.

What he is describing is a bus-feed rather than star feed.

I'm with Jim. I like the original relay with separate wires
for each plug. Repair or re-purpose the original would be my
choice.

The deadline to enroll in the exchange for January 1 is December 15.

The good news is that with Obamacare's ban on age based price

Never heard of it before, so I looked it up:

Sous-vide (/suːˈviːd/; French for under vacuum)[1] is a method of
cooking food sealed in airtight plastic bags in a water bath for
longer than normal cooking times -- 72 hours in some cases -- at an
accurately regulated temperature much lower than normally used for
  cooking, typically around 55 °C (131 °F) to 60 °C (140 °F) for meats
and higher for vegetables. The intention is to cook the item evenly,
and not to overcook the outside while still keeping the inside at
the same doneness, keeping the food juicier.

The article continues on, talking about History, Essential features,
Limitations, Modern use, Temperature control, and Safety.

In particular, Clostridium botulinum bacteria can grow in food in the
absence of oxygen and produce the deadly botulinum toxin, so sous-vide
cooking must be performed under carefully controlled conditions to avoid
botulism poisoning.[12]

There are three failure modes for the CC -- bad amplifier, bad
actuator, and bad speed sensor in the cluster. Typically a bad
actuator takes out the amplifier due to excessive current, but the
normal failure is either the Hall effect pickup speed sensor
quits
working (cracks) or the amplifier solder traces crack and it
refuses

to work.

Mine all failed to pick up speed once in a while, especially if the
speed drop was large, but if it starts to happen frequently, or the
speed control starts to drop out frequently, very likely the
amplifier

is going bad.

It is possible for the column switch to go bad, you can replace it
without pulling the steering wheel. If it feel floppy, or was used
too many times as the turn signal switch, it may not be making
contact.

Sounds like you had something between a lightning strike and a transient

From: Peter Frederick psf...@earthlink.net

There are three failure modes for the CC -- bad amplifier, bad
actuator, and bad speed sensor in the cluster. Typically a bad
actuator takes out the amplifier due to excessive current, but the
normal failure is either the Hall effect pickup speed sensor quits
working (cracks) or the amplifier solder traces crack and it refuses
to work.

Mine all failed to pick up speed once in a while, especially if the
speed drop was large, but if it starts to happen frequently, or the
speed control starts to drop out frequently, very likely the amplifier
is going bad.

It is possible for the column switch to go bad, you can replace it
without pulling the steering wheel. If it feel floppy, or was used
too many times as the turn signal switch, it may not be making contact.

Re: [MBZ] OT but back to diesels

2013-09-19 Thread Michael Canfield
Some of us think that there is no point where a gasser makes sense when
buying a used truck. A Diesel is going to last longer, on average, even if
not maintained well. They only come in 3/4 ton or bigger so you get better
brakes, 10 ply tires that roll easier, bigger bearings and u-joints that
last longer and more. They can be had for similar cost.

So, a200k mile used Diesel has better chances of being a good used truck
for the money even if is not as well cared for as a similar gas truck.

Odd logic I know but I have been hauling stuff all over the east coast and
around here hauling scrap and kids and a 3/4 ton Diesel works out to be the
best used value out there. I would drive gassers if I could run and
maintain them for less money.

It was a Ford rather than a GM but years ago, a client had a pickup they
used to tow a big trailer from Chicago to Winnipeg hauling 18000# of
some sort of bridge coating mixture.
They swapped some parts from a schoolbus motor onto the pickup and
gained a bunch of power. I believe the injection pump, injectors and turbo.
His view at the time was that Ford had detuned the pickup purely to make
it quieter.

I've had no trouble accessing (getting to) the speedo connection on back of

Use section of coat hanger about 8 inches long for extraction tool. At one

[MBZ] 'Nother Sondy Tale

2013-09-19 Thread WILTON

Yep, already.

ARCTIC FOXES
By Wilton Strickland

In early summer at Sondrestrom, I began to notice a couple of light tan
arctic foxes poking their heads from under the edge of a small building
directly outside of my rear windows. Because of their more compact bodies,
shorter legs, shorter snouts and shorter, triangular ears, all to conserve
heat more efficiently, they look much better to me than the long, skinny red
foxes in the States. I soon began to look out the windows hoping to see
them, and soon, there were two cute little kits added to their small family.
At first I could see the kits only when they shyly peeked from under the
building, but they were soon playing enthusiastically in their front yard
and were obviously not aware of my observations from the second floor
windows above them. I wished many times that I could join them in their
games - as if playing with puppies or domestic kittens - but, of course, I
knew that could not be. I never saw anybody else near them or their den,
and there were no other predators in the area, so they had nothing to fear.
I don't think anybody else was aware of their presence under the unoccupied
storage building. The mom and dad would at first leave the den one at a
time, evidently, to gather food for the family, who would always greet the
returning parent very enthusiastically.

As the summer progressed, the kits grew fast and developed beautiful, full
and fluffy-looking coats. Sometime near mid-summer, the base commander
issued a notice, especially to kitchen staff in the dining facilities
(dining hall, Officer and NCO Clubs) to stop feeding the base fox population
and to Please, stop trying to make them pets. There was some chance of
their having and spreading Rabies, but I never heard any reports of it in
the area, and I never heard anything about any of the foxes showing any
aggression, but I thought it wise to keep each other at a distance. Their
shyness worked very well for me to keep us well apart. I did not mention
the fox family outside my window; 'just continued to enjoy observing them as
the kits became adolescents and became more independent - running off on
their own occasionally.

As summer yielded to autumn and colder weather in early September, I began
to notice the subtle changes in the foxes coats from the summer tan or beige
to graying at first, then to a little whiter and, finally, to brilliant
solid white as winter gained a solid grip in mid to late September. As
darkness came earlier in the day, I was able to observe them less and less
and finally was unable to see them at all outside my window. 'May have seen
them elsewhere on base from my truck, but because they all looked alike from
a distance, I could not know. For a while, I occasionally had a feeling of
having lost some friends.

This is merely another example of the many beautiful and fantastic things
happening all around me that made an otherwise somewhat forbidding and
potentially boring environment extremely enjoyable and interesting. I'm
afraid that many who were there with me never saw it and never realized the
fantastic world of beauty and adventure all around us. Of course, I should
remind the reader that my situation was nearly unique in that I was able to
move around in an area much larger and much more varied than Sondrestrom
itself, but, again, there were many new and rewarding things to enjoy there
in that small and confined space, too. The fox family immediately outside
my window was another bonus.

You want to use the Intel EXPI9301CT NIC. It has a PCIe x1 connector,
which will mate with the PCIe x1 slots in your motherboard.

It comes in two flavors,

$39.99

Bulk packaged (board only)

The other choices on the page you cited either have edge connectors that

Re: [MBZ] OT: Cooking Sous Vide

2013-09-19 Thread Greg Fiorentino
In particular, Clostridium botulinum bacteria can grow in food in the
absence of oxygen and produce the deadly botulinum toxin, so sous-vide cooking
must be performed under carefully controlled conditions to avoid botulism
poisoning.[12]

Is followed by:

Generally speaking, food that is heated and served within four hours is
considered safe, but meat that is cooked for longer to tenderize must reach a
temperature of at least 55 °C (131 °F) within four hours and then be kept there
for sufficient time, in order to pasteurize the meat.

Pasteurization kills the botulism bacteria, but the possibility of hardy
botulism spores surviving and reactivating once cool remains a concern as with
many preserved foods, however processed. For that reason, Baldwin's treatise
specifies precise chilling requirements for cook-chill, so that the botulism
spores do not have the opportunity to grow or propagate. Pasteurised food can
then be stored for up to two weeks at around 3 °C (37 °F) sealed within the
vacuum pack.[4]

If I am going to refrigerate and store pasteurized food, I chill it immediately
in an ice water bath. Nothing is idiot-proof.

So what causes the [cruise] surge cycle in the engine?

It is when the PID loop in the CC amplifier gets out of
whack with respect to the mechanical response characteristics
of the car.

Yeah. Usually I've found it to be bad solder joints within
the amplifier, causing it to react inappropriately to external
stimuli. The servo motors can develop a bad spot on their
position feedback potentiometer, or there can be sticky
mechanisms. But it's usually the amp.

Not necessarily, depending on why it's off, and how far.
If it was due to ambient temperature, they could well shoot
for fast in the summer and slow in the winter, depending on
an annual average to 'meet' the spec. Wouldn't put it past

Re: [MBZ] OT: Cooking Sous Vide

2013-09-19 Thread Greg Fiorentino
The key is that the temperature control should be accurate to within a
degree or so, and keep the water bath constant to that temperature. I'm
sure that some of you know how to do that and are capable of building such a
device. I was happy to pay the $99. I already had the $25 slow cooker and
foodsaver vacuum sealer, but Ziploc freezer bags work better for some
things. The results are well worth it!

Some people have taken a Crockpot and a simple Arduino controller to

simple programming. This is very easy to do even as a beginner
project as I think there are instructables about it, I have seen
various sites with such things and all the details.

Or you could do it the analog route with a wall-wart power source, an
op-amp, a few resistors, a few capacitors, and a relay ...

Well folks, it finally happened! My 1990 350SDL rod bender with 278k and
a repair history similar to Wilton's (my head gasket was at ~125k but
still on the original trans) was rear-ended by a school bus!

Kind of makes you wish you bought Wilton's car last month, eh?

Worst bus story I heard was from one of my teachers.
Her new silver 1978 Corvette was sitting at a stop sign, and a school bus
failed to swing wide enough while making a left turn and ran the back
wheels across its nose. The wrecker driver compounded the folly by yanking
the Vette out from under the bus, shredded fiberglass everywhere.
IIRC the car was about 3 weeks old. She was furious when the insurance
refused to total it and buy her a new one.

Mitch.

If you don't, sooner or later you will put a kink in the speedo cable,
and the needle will wobble. This will also kill your cruise control
until you replace the cable since the speed sensor is in the speedo
head.

Yes, very stable oscillators use a crystal oven to hold the crystal

Yes, but of course!

The best ones have the crystal cut so the rate-of-drift-versus-temperature
curve is horizontal at the oven's temperature.

[MBZ] UPS is fast and cheap to canada

2013-09-19 Thread Gary Hurst
i sent a box of about 20lbs to toronto today on standard. shipping was
only 37 bucks. 55 with insurance. i have to think this is a mistake, but
i was told it is expected to be delivered on tuesday

that's a lot cheaper and faster on my end than USPS!

a couple of months ago i overnighted a fairly substantial part to canada
via UPS and it was only about 80 dollars and arrived about 16 hours after
it was shipped.

it's impressive although most canadians do not like to be shipped via UPS
as it seems to cost them some additional fees or something

Always? Or if it's an available option - I haven't found a diesel

As I said in another post, I don't choose diesel because it's
cheaper. It stores better, is less inflammable, has less vapor
dangers, has higher BTU density, the ignition cycle is more
efficient, the exhaust doesn't stink like gasoline, the fuel is
easier to create from bio sources.

Disadvantages are: harder cold weather starting, and... There
probably another one... maybe...

I keep trying to talk myself into a diesel pickup.
 So far I have resisted.

Why have you resisted? Because of the cost? Or
