IMO the auto industry is close to being totally government mandated,
That's why all cars look so much alike. We'll never give another Colin
Chapman (Lotus) or Ferdinand Porsche (VW and Porsche) and many others
the latitude to innovate. Everything must be cookie cutter and yet
they still must face almost 10 examples going through destructive
testing. Envision 10 Bugatti's Veyron's or Lamborghini's being
destroyed! (it must be hard to watch if you love cars.) Yet, if they
are to be sold in the US that's what happens. And depending on the
amount of yearly changes they may have to endure those tests yearly.
Sadly, the US is no longer the 'car buying capital of the world' it once
was (back in 2009). No longer can some place like Ca. dictate safety
and emission regulations for the whole country. I suspect the US wull
see fewer and fewer choices when it comes to new cars. Of course, even
being Number 2 has its perks - but China will make most of the rules or
lack of them.
Of course, the effect of the USA's deep debt will continue to
become known as the years pass. Whether its a $17+ Trillion debt (or
$80+ Trillion as some say) it's a bill our kids and grandkids will pay
their whole lives. Talk about being born into poverty! And we lose
more options with each passing day.

I got a set last summer but the Ox tank is empty and I have not had it
filled yet (or swapped - whatever they do here). Will have to do so once
the weather warms a bit. Both tanks, gauges etc on a roller cart. Only
the cutting torch though. No welding tips but that should not be hard to
rectify. The smaller tanks - two foot high or so. Owned tanks though so
no rental cost. I have rarely played with such a thing. My father had a
set when I was younger and silly me let them be sold after he died. He
owned the Ac tank - the bigger one but they would not sell the bigger Ox
tank so it was leased. Should have kept the set.

You're probably right, BUT, Mercedes did try several Wankel diesel
engines in their test bed C-111. Since the Wankel was tried just before
they tried the diesels in the C-111, a Mercedes diesel Wankel might bolt
right up to a transmission of that era. If so, someone might have
gotten hold of an MB diesel Wankel engine and put it in this car without
too much major adaptation.
He claims to have replaced seals and main bearings. That is about all
there is to replace in a Wankel and main bearings are seldom replaced in
a standard Mercedes diesel without replacing other engine parts, so he
seems to know something about Wankel engines.
If it's not a Wankel, why is the guy saying it is when he could more
easily sell the car with a standard diesel at that price?

Kaleb ought to go out there and buy it if it is a Wankel.
It would be an interesting addition to his fleet.

Here's a description of MBs Wankel experiments:

The *C111* was a series of experimental automobiles
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Automobile produced by Mercedes-Benz
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mercedes-Benz in the 1960s and 1970s. The
company was experimenting with new engine technologies, including Wankel
engines http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wankel_engine, Diesel engines
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Diesel_engine, and turbochargers
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Turbocharger, and used the basic C111
platform as a testbed. Other experimental features included gullwing
doors http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gullwing_door and a luxurious
interior with leather trim and air conditioning
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Air_conditioning.

The first version of the C111
http://emercedesbenz.com/Jul08/31_001312_eMercedesBenz_Feature_A_Look_Back_At_The_Mercedes_Benz_C_111_Research_Vehicle.html
was completed in 1969. It used a fiberglass
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fiberglass body shell and had a
three-rotor http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mercedes-Benz_M950F direct
fuel injected http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fuel_injected Wankel engine
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wankel_engine (code named M950F
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mercedes-Benz_M950F) mounted in the
middle http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MR_layout. The next C111 appeared
in 1970. It used a four-rotor engine
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mercedes-Benz_M950F producing 370 hp
(275 kW). The car could reportedly hit 290 km/h (180 mph).

The company decided not to adopt the Wankel engine and turned to Diesel
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Diesel_engine experiments for the second
and third C111. The C111-IID produced 190 horsepower (140 kW) and was
based on the 240D 3.0 W115 model OM617 engine. The C111-III was powered
by a 230 horsepower (170 kW) @ 4,500rpm straight-5
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Straight-5 OM617 turbodiesel which broke
nine diesel and gas speed records. With more aerodynamic
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aerodynamic bodywork that gave it an air
drag coefficient http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Drag_coefficient of
.191^[/citation needed
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Citation_needed/] , the C111
eventually hit 200 mph (322 km/h) at Nardò
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nard%C3%B2_Ring in 1978, and averaged
14.7mpg@ 316 km/h (195.4 mph) over a 12 hour cruise. A later 500 hp
(372 kW) 4.8 L twin KKK-turbocharged V8
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/V8_engine version set another record,
with an average lap-speed of 403.78 km/h (250.958 mph). It was achieved
by Dr. Hans Leibold in 1 minute, 56.67 seconds on May 5, 1979.

no rental cost. I have rarely played with such a thing. My father had a

owned the Ac tank - the bigger one but they would not sell the bigger Ox

Boeing was trying to do that with the 777 and has encountered issues that

777 is not innovation as much as it is refinement. Yes, innovation in

size engine and traditional airfoil. What? - I don't know, but that
would be innovation and not refinement. Plastic is merely a materials
issue but the 777 still remains a large airfoil with huge engines not
much different from the failed Smithsonian design issues 100 years ago
when Wright brothers innovated with better application of ideas to get
off the ground earlier than all the Smithsonian Institution's failed
experiments of flight. Before the efforts of the Wright brothers
concepts of flight were rather narrow but the brothers took the known
concepts and innovated and refinements are known today. With what we
know today, why does the blackbird remain the titleholder for world's
speed? Or the Spruce Goose which is another refinement but an
interesting actual example of refinement. But we don't have Jetsons
type of flight today which might prove to be mere refinement instead
of innovation but I would guess Jetsons would be innovation not
refinement. We cannot confuse innovation and invention with
refinement of materials or design issues. Tesla experiments were
mostly successful but the Tesla electricity distribution issues were
buried instead of left open for dissemination. That is not freedom -
that is stifling oversight. We know freedom and liberty in name only
today. We do not know freedom or liberty. We are the frog in the

appears. Do you know this stuff? There is a conference in ABQ in a
couple of weeks. This stuff sounds interesting but I know nothing
about it except what I can muddle through on their website and
 youtube.

I looked at the conference speakers and found one from Lawrence Livermore
National Laboratory (LLNL), but none from Los Alamos National Laboratory
(LANL). The website has a lot of stuff on it, most of which I have never
heard of.

The conference will occur while we are in Indiana.
