You talking about freezing weather, short trips that don't get the oil hot enough to force out the H2O, dusty dirt roads, etc? I suppose FL humidity combined with trip distances under 2 miles could be hard on the oil, but other than that, it should be far kinder to the oil than, say, Wisconsin. Current M1 might not hold up under heat as well as 1970's near-pure PAO M1, but nobody really needs 400°F+ heat resistance for their S500's oil. Curt Raymond via Mercedes wrote: I'm gonna call shenanigans. Nobody has ever been able to prove that anything has changed with M1. The samples I took last year look just like the ones I took in 2006 and say the oil is good to at least 10k in my 190D. The talk I heard was shortly after the Castrol Syntec legal actions in the 1990s. Once Castrol/Quaker State got the FTC to back off on requiring them to actually put synthesized molecules in the bottles labeled 'synthetic', then everybody started copying their business model. The funny thing was that in 1992, black bottle Syntec was marketed as a premium product, sold for $5 a quart when M1 was $4 a quart and it was somewhat common to see M1 on sale for $2.99. I got Syntec for less than M1 after rebate in 1992 or 1993, found that me car suddenly 'used' oil with the Syntec in the sump. Had to add a quart after 2000 miles or so. Took out the 5w50 Castrol, put in 5W30 M1, and consumption went back to 1/2 qt in 7500 miles. At the time I wondered if the Syntec cooked down or evaporated, and I never used it again. With the FTC action a few years later, I was convinced that heat caused a reduction in volume of Syntec that didn't happen with M1. When I look back on that $0.999 premium gas and $3.99 Mobil One, I realize what a bargain it would be to get the same quality M1 today for $23 per 5 quarts when premium gas is $3.75. [MBZ] more on valve adjustment
I have to say that the adjustment of the valves on my poor old engine appears to have been a success. It starts easier and seems to run smoother. I should have done it long ago. Not much of a job really. Took some time but was about as easy as it gets apart from the one valve where the special wrenches did not fit well. Managed to do it with the one bent wrench on the bottom nut and a shorter normal wrench on the top nut. ___ http://www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://mail.okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com All posts are the result of individual contributors and as such, those individuals are responsible for the content of the post. Re: [MBZ] more on valve adjustment
Repeat the job in a few thousand miles -- when they are tight, carbon builds up on the valve stems, and gives you a false setting. As the carbon wears off with the added clearance, they go tight again and still don't seal. If they go tight in a few thousand miles, set them at bit loose and see what happens in a few thousand -- often the engine runs much better as the valves begin to seat properly. [MBZ] Suspension Rubber Quality for 126
Sorry if you get a double post on this but I accidently sent the original from the wrong (i.e., non list) email account. --- I have a 1982 300SD that still has all original (30+ year old) rubber bits in the suspension and driveline. The flex disks show cracks so I need to replace them and probably the center bearing support too. I remember how good my 123 wagon drove with new rubber suspension bits so I'm considering replacing all the old suspension rubber on the SD. Here's what I'd like to know: Is the currently available 126 replacement suspension rubber good quality? If so, what are the good brands and what should I avoid? I don't want to go through all the trouble to replace the rubber with stuff that will soon be worse than the old original rubber. Thanks in advance for list wisdom. Re: [MBZ] Suspension Rubber Quality for 126
I think we saw that. I rebuilt the front suspension on one of my 84 SDs, not that hard of a job, you need the spring compressor, a vice, and some other random tools. An air impact wrench helps a lot to get stuff apart, including an air hammer with pickle forks. The manual gives sufficient details on how to do it all, I improvised a bit on pressing in the subframe mounts, no big deal. I took some pics, I should probably post them some place. Might as well do brakes (and you will have to regrease bearings) while everything is apart. Will need a new alignment after too. I did the flex disks and center bearing on the other SD, again the manual explains it. It was a bit tight doing a couple of the bolts but doable. Remove the exhaust system and rear trans mount, put a floor jack under the tranny so you can keep it up, er, hold it from falling, er, well, you know... I would not know about the rubber quality, I am sure it will be good enough for service, maybe not another 30 years but long enough. Looked OK to me but what do I know... --R On 7/17/14 2:28 PM, Scott and Gwen Ritchey via Mercedes wrote: Sorry if you get a double post on this but I accidently sent the original from the wrong (i.e., non list) email account. --- I have a 1982 300SD that still has all original (30+ year old) rubber bits in the suspension and driveline. Unless Emperor Gary says otherwise, I would bite the bullet and buy OE for this. Rubber parts are so easy to cut corners on, and it's really tough to know/trust what you're getting if you go aftermarket. If you look online I'll bet nearly everyone will try to sell you URO brand. These are, without exception, the worst possible parts you can put on your car in my opinion. That being said, the last set of engine mounts I got from Rusty were supposed to be Lemforders, but I have since found they were from Taiwan and brand labeled. I would add that in under two years they have compressed/sagged significantly. I paid Lemforder prices for them, too. That being said, the last set of engine mounts I got from Rusty were supposed to be Lemforders, but I have since found they were from Taiwan and brand labeled. I would add that in under two years they have compressed/sagged significantly. I paid Lemforder prices for them, too. By a careful, scientific process of elimination I've determined that the water dripping on the emergency brake foot pedal is from the front windshield. Re: [MBZ] Leaky W123 front w/s
After five years the dealer is going to tell you to bugger off. You might want to talk to your insurance company and see if they'll make the inquiry. It carries far more weight coming from them. Otherwise, I would chalk it up to experience and buy an OE seal and have a glass company RR it. That way you'll know it's right. Randy Steele showed me the differences between an OE and aftermarket W123 windshield seal years ago. The differences are very subtle, but they manifest themselves exactly the way you've discovered. Re: [MBZ] Leaky W123 front w/s
You can try using some official MB windshield sealant under the lip where the glass sits in the seal. It is A0019893120, about $25 for a big cartridge that fits in a grease gun. It stays pliable for years, not silicone-based. Made in Holland. I do not know if the subcontractor that actually did the work (probably Banner Glass) used an OEM seal, but the glass was OEM Securit or Segla; the dealer even gave me an inspected-by-Carl-Benz ticker. So do I go to a glass shop and have them reseal it? Do it myself? Or should I purchase a new GERMAN seal and have a glass shop R/R the glass with the new OEM seal? ___ http://www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://mail.okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com All posts are the result of individual contributors and as such, those individuals are responsible for the content of the post. [MBZ] Six Million Dollar tumbler
Ok, not that expensive, but much like the 70's TV show, the ignition cylinder was rebuilt. 1974 450 SL I had ordered a factory tumbler and key from the local dealer, per instruction from Classic Center. That was April. I got impatient and found a complete lock cylinder off fleabay and had my indy install that when I was able to get the locked up tumbler to turn. I had intended the hardware to be back up if the old one had to be drilled. I have been driving on two keys since May. One for the doors, the other to light off. I was thinking. A very dangerous thing at times. where in tarnation is my dang tumbler the Black Forest Elves are supposed to be making? I need to contact the dealer to see if it got lost, but, being a lazy butt and it being hot outside, and I am not in the mood to pick up the phone, and would rather be lied to my face, than my ear, I have not done that. Maybe in the morrow. I recalled information about a local lock shop that can rebuild the tumbler and make me a coded key for it. That sounds interesting, I thunk to myself. I have about seven gallons of waste oil that needed disposal, and the FLAPS was sort of on the way, so I packed up the dead lock set and took it to the shop. Feller at the shop grabs it and scurried off to the back with not much verbal interplay. I stood about wondering what magic he intended, or had he absconded with my lock and was now posting it on Fleabay. A few minutes later he came back and said it was fairly mucked up. Four thirty. Forty-five. I heard $430. ?? Forty five? A range of price? Nope. He would charge me $45 and have it ready by 1630. SWEET! Steel key and coded to the car. Half the cost of the GERMAN tumbler. I jumped on it. When I picked it up, he assured me it was fully functional, but I should test it on the doors, just for good measure. If it was not good, bring it back and he would adjust it. I tried it on the doors. Driver door was good, Passenger and trunk, not so much. I will be driving the car there in the morning, after I get the bread dough out from rising over night in the ice box. clay 2002 s430 - Victor, a Stately well tailored chap 1974 450sl - Frosch - Two tone green 1972 220D - Gump - She was green, simple and ran 1995 E300D - Gave her life to save me against a Dame in a SUV POS 1987 SDL - Beware Nigerian Scammers ___ http://www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://mail.okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com All posts are the result of individual contributors and as such, those individuals are responsible for the content of the post.
