Re: [MBZ] OT License plate Readers

2015-01-28 Thread Max Dillon via Mercedes
Wilton,

The reason this mass surveillance gets my hackles up is because of the data
base aspect.

Keeping a record of everywhere I go in my car could be easily abused. Given
the Louis Lerner / IRS abuses of conservative non-profits, one can easily
imagine a day when those in power decide that my past behavior, which was
perfectly legal, has now become problematic, because my political beliefs don't
match up.

We see that Dillon's car was present at the meetings of that terror group
Boston Tea Party, he has a concealed weapon permit, and now he's driving
toward the national capital region right after we outlawed old diesel engines
which are destroying the atmosphere. Go arrest him!

I would much rather that the police have to work a little harder to catch the
bad guys than give up any liberty.

[MBZ] Biking in the Snow

2015-01-28 Thread archer75--- via Mercedes

For a growing community of winter cyclists in Milwaukee, this sounds like the
perfect weather to bring out the bike.

Year-round cycling is on the rise in the Midwest city — where winter lows can
go south of zero. It’s a trend that debunks critics around the country who say
bike lanes will only be used in fair weather.

Dave Schlabowske, deputy director at the Wisconsin Bike Federation, says he’s
seen a drastic change in the last 15 years that he’s been biking to work
through the winter.

“Back then, if I saw somebody I didn’t know biking in February, I’d email the
six other people I knew who biked in the winter and tell them about it,” he
says. “Now I see people out there all the time.”

In snowy months, the city government’s top priority for helping bikers is
simply keeping the streets plowed, including the city’s 85 miles of bike lanes
(almost 30 miles of which were put down in the last two years). Bike racks on
the front of every city bus make it easier for riders to combine different
modes of transportation.

“Winter’s just a fact of life in Wisconsin — it is what it is,” says Kristin
Bennett, the city’s bicycle/pedestrian transportation coordinator. “People have
the same travel needs no matter the time of the year.”

While the city doesn’t have data on winter bikers — it’s working to install
bike traffic counters this year — anecdotally, almost everyone agrees winter
biking is on the rise.

One innovation making winter biking easier is the popularity of fat tire
bicycles — souped-up mountain bikes equipped to ride on snow-covered trails.
There are five different bike companies in Wisconsin that now produce fat tire
bikes.

“It’s taken off,” Bennett says. “Everyone’s asking about them.”

Sales of fat tire bikes, which range from $250 to $5,500 in price, totaled $8.8
million across the country last year, the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reported.

While he says overall winter business is currently slow at Crank Daddy’s
Bicycle Works, co-owner Eric Kuhagen says more people have been buying winter
gear and fat tire bikes than in past winters. Thick gloves and warm booties
that go over shoes are among the top-selling items.

“Riding your bike in any weather, it’s not about the weather, it’s about the
proper gear,” Kuhagen says. “That’s true for any sport, not just cycling.”

Milwaukee isn’t the only frigid Midwest city where bikers aren’t afraid of the
winter. In her first proclamation in office last year, Minneapolis Mayor Betsy
Hodges named January 3rd “Winter Biking Day,” calling Minneapolis cyclists
“tougher and much better looking than bicyclists from all those wimpier
cities.” And this year, for the first time, the streets department in Calgary
has been directed to clear priority cycling routes when snow falls.

Not everyone is on board with the winter biking trend. “In the winter, it won’t
even be used,” is a common refrain from many bike lane opponents. One upstate
New York mayor suggested last year that winter bikers “should be arrested”
because they’re putting others in danger.

Schlabowske says it’s the opposite — while commuting to work on his bike, he
has helped drivers push cars out of ditches by the side of the road.

“I haven’t driven a car to work in 15 years,” he says.

One small business taking advantage of the winter months is Flavor Cycle, a
food delivery company that brings Milwaukeeans restaurant meals by bike. More
orders come in as the temperature drops, and the company’s fleet of 18
contracted delivery people typically clock 30 to 40 miles every six-hour shift.

“When one day you’re out in subzero windchill, and the next day it’s 10
degrees, 10 degrees feels fantastic,” says owner Peter DiAntoni. He also jumps
in the saddle to make deliveries. “Once you’ve hit the hardest part,
everything’s easier.”

But like most winter bikers — and the rest of the city — Flavor Cycle will
close shop during especially nasty snowstorms.

“Everyone who’s doing this job loves it, they love the challenge,” DiAntoni
says, but “we’re not martyring ourselves.”

To all in this discussion,
I'm glad to see so many concerned citizens.  Now if all of you will call
or write your elected officials, at all levels, and give them a piece of your
mind, it will get better.  It's nice to discuss on this list, but that
accomplishes nothing but making you feel better and clutters the archives.
Contact your elected officials and make your position known.  And if they don't
act, use term limits the next time and vote them out.  That's what I do, but
I'm only one person.  Join the outrage!

read the manual, and learn what each knob, lever, and switch did before you
drove the car. I think a lot was lost when they moved away from the double
wishbone front suspension (cost savings). The 115 and the 107 were the best
driving MB's I have owned.

I've been having a somewhat intermittent problem with my low beam headlights
turning off seemingly on their own. It seem to occur when either hitting a
bump in the road, when using the turn signals, or when using the hi-beam
flasher so it must be in the multi-purpose stalk. I've sprayed DeOxit D5 in
the switch and exercised it in all directions but the problem persists. My

switch. What is the list's consensus? TIA.

Re: [MBZ] OT License plate Readers

2015-01-28 Thread G Mann via Mercedes
The issue of personal freedom vs government intrusion is one that becomes
very personal regardless of which side of the issue a person takes.

Those who read and understand the Constitution and Amendments as
protections FROM government intrusions and abuse of power see the current
and somewhat recent [last 40 years or so] increase in the size and control
of government, local, state, and federal, as violations of those
protections.

Those who read and understand the Constitution and Amendments as
protections BY government, take comfort that government has become larger
and more all providing, by their reasoning.

As for myself, I take the stance that when the police arrive at the scene
of violence carrying their gun, chalk to mark the outline of the newly
deceased, and a report clipboard, that I be the one giving the statement,
rather than the one having my outline drawn in chalk. Having exercised my
Right to Self Defense guaranteed by Constitution and Amendments.

For others, it seems they are content to delegate that Right to someone
else, along with all the other Rights, except for freedom of speech...

From my view point, we have seen a somewhat slow erosion of the principles
of the very thing that made America the most successful nation in history.
That principle driven by fierce personal independence, standing on your own
feet, taking responsibility for your own actions, and reaping the rewards
of your own success or your own failure.. Not relying on government to
provide all things.

Then, I come from a generation of men who built businesses, hired people,
fired people who didn't preform the job, paid and promoted those who did,
produced products that worked and lasted, improved those products, and
treated customers with respect. And made profit.

Old School... apparently. Which is why I like and enjoy my made the old
way Mercedes, which were built to that same standard. To last.

some snowballs. A nice snow, but somewhat cooler than I prefer. :)

Interestingly many of the city roads still aren't cleared from Saturday
morning, and the talk on the streets was that folks were glad it wasn't
worse here Sunday night because we just aren't prepared like they are up
north - almost exactly the same conversation I hear when it doesn't snow
in NC. Given that, I did think it odd that almost every parking lot was
cleared by of the Sunday night snow by early Monday morning.

I observe that some people here cannot drive in any weather, but maybe
those are the New Yorkers. It was reasonably pleasant on the unscraped
roads, and I didn't hit any interesting ice in the freezing or just above
temps. I even went without a coat a couple of times.

Hope you folks further north were indeed better prepared, and the rest of
the week has been pleasant.

large numbers of police shootings in Wichita. Since 2010, wichita
has had more fatal police shootings Detroit and Chicago!

popo here stopped a kid they knew was drugged up, and put 15 rounds
into the unarmed kid, because the kid stopped and backed into the po
lice car. Nothing wrong with thataccording to the po lice

popo in missouri handcuffed a drunk kid on a boat, pulled him into
the po-boat wrapped a life jacked around the kid, took him out where
nobody could see, then pushed the kid over and drowned him. popo had
no idea how the kid ended up in the water and got drowned. Yeah,

(granted the kid was probably a smart-mouth but they should be used to

Get a used one from Kaleb or LKQ Auto, or on ebay from a reputable seller.

I've been looking on the Inet for a replacement multi-purpose stalk for my
'84 300D and have found prices for new units at ~ $50 (URO) - $150 (OE).
Since it may be awhile before the weather warms up sufficiently for a PNP
visit, what's the list's consensus regarding URO products? TIA.

2015-01-28 Thread Curt Raymond via Mercedes
So you're suggesting we can remove protections and the outliers will stay
outliers?
That makes no sense. If that were true why would you not suggest removing gun
control? My guns have never killed anybody. My dad has loads of guns that never
killed anybody (well some of the military stuff was used in war and may have
killed people), many of my friends have never killed anybody. Those don't make
headlines either. For every gun used illegally there are thousands that aren't.

What sort of shape is the car in?
Is this a collector or a beater, or somewhere in between?

If a beater, then my guess is that one could retro fit some other switch in.
Back in the 60's most cars had a pull switch on the dash and a push
button on the floor that one kicked with one's foot to dim the lights.
That sort of thing is still available and much simpler. Would require re
wiring a bit but should not be a big job.

My sister in law had a start function go bad on the multi function
switch in a Honda. The switch was more than the car was worth and the
rest of the switch worked fine.
We wired in a push button. Turn the key to on and then push in the
button until the car started and let the button go.

Worked fine and she drove it for years.

Not sure what the inspectors might say if one had to get the car
approved. Might be a rule against changing anything??
