[MBZ] OT: Global none-warming. was: Where to dump the snow in Boston?
Paul Homewood, who, on his Notalotofpeopleknowthat blog, had checked the published temperature graphs for three weather stations in Paraguay against the temperatures that had originally been recorded. In each instance, the actual trend of 60 years of data had been dramatically reversed, so that a cooling trend was changed to one that showed a marked warming. This was only the latest of many examples of a practice long recognised by expert observers around the world – one that raises an ever larger question mark over the entire official surface-temperature record. Homewood checked a swathe of other South American weather stations around the original three. In each case he found the same suspicious one-way “adjustments”. First these were made by the US government’s Global Historical Climate Network (GHCN). They were then amplified by two of the main official surface records, the Goddard Institute for Space Studies (Giss) and the National Climate Data Center (NCDC), which use the warming trends to estimate temperatures across the vast regions of the Earth where no measurements are taken. Yet these are the very records on which scientists and politicians rely for their belief in “global warming”. Homewood has now turned his attention to the weather stations across much of the Arctic, between Canada (51 degrees W) and the heart of Siberia (87 degrees E). Again, in nearly every case, the same one-way adjustments have been made, to show warming up to 1 degree C or more higher than was indicated by the data that was actually recorded. This has surprised no one more than Traust Jonsson, who was long in charge of climate research for the Iceland met office (and with whom Homewood has been in touch). Jonsson was amazed to see how the new version completely “disappears” Iceland’s “sea ice years” around 1970, when a period of extreme cooling almost devastated his country’s economy. One of the first examples of these “adjustments” was exposed in 2007 by the statistician Steve McIntyre, when he discovered a paper published in 1987 by James Hansen, the scientist (later turned fanatical climate activist) who for many years ran Giss. Hansen’s original graph showed temperatures in the Arctic as having been much higher around 1940 than at any time since. But as Homewood reveals in his blog post, “Temperature adjustments transform Arctic history”, Giss has turned this upside down. Arctic temperatures from that time have been lowered so much that that they are now dwarfed by those of the past 20 years. Homewood’s interest in the Arctic is partly because the “vanishing” of its polar ice (and the polar bears) has become such a poster-child for those trying to persuade us that we are threatened by runaway warming. But he chose that particular stretch of the Arctic because it is where ice is affected by warmer water brought in by cyclical shifts in a major Atlantic current – this last peaked at just the time 75 years ago when Arctic ice retreated even further than it has done recently. The ice-melt is not caused by rising global temperatures at all. Of much more serious significance, however, is the way this wholesale manipulation of the official temperature record – for reasons GHCN and Giss have never plausibly explained – has become the real elephant in the room of the greatest and most costly scare the world has known. This really does begin to look like one of the greatest scientific scandals of all time. http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/earth/environment/globalwarming/11395516/The-fiddling-with-temperature-data-is-the-biggest-science-scandal-ever.html Gerry ... rogerhga--- wrote: I'll add a simple tidbit to this discussion. Re: [MBZ] OT: Global none-warming. was: Where to dump the snow in Boston?
Andrew, The article that I think Curt posted several days ago about experiencing relentless inundation of coastal areas, such as Miami (your words) included a key bit of information that perhaps you missed. When the everglades were drained, the elevation in the area dropped by seven feet. The same article didn't give any data about how much the seas have risen. Drawing the conclusion that Miami is suffering salt water contamination because of global warming defies common sense. Drained everglades = the land sunk seven feet. That's their problem! A little observation, knowledge, and critical thinking go a long way. You were trained as a geologist I believe. I suspect that if you applied some research and critical thinking to the recent geological history of NYC and Boston, you would find there are other documented factors that explain any observed seas rising phenomena. -- Max Dillon Charleston SC '87 300TD '95 E300 On February 13, 2015 9:58:27 AM EST, Andrew Strasfogel via Mercedes mercedes@okiebenz.com wrote: So if the polar ice cap isn't melting, what do you think has caused the worldwide rise in sea level? Canada will sell it's oil.. EH. Either it will pipeline it to the USA gulf coast refinery, and create American jobs, or it will build a pipeline to Canadian west coast and sell the crude to China. Which China wants very badly. The oil that would come via Keystone pipeline, to USA, would likely be sold in part to China as well, but it's likely to then have some influence on the balance of trade re USA/China debt holdings. Just how that would play out is above my pay grade, but I will lay bets the back rooms of congress are smoke filled with people figuring how to play that game. Re: [MBZ] OT: Global none-warming. was: Where to dump the snow in Boston?
So if the polar ice cap isn't melting, what do you think has caused the worldwide rise in sea level? The relentless inundation of coastal areas, such as Miami, NYC, Boston and other low lying metropoli? Trick photography? Conspiracy by the renewable energy cartel? On Fri, Feb 13, 2015 at 5:17 AM, archer75--- via Mercedes mercedes@okiebenz.com wrote: Paul Homewood, who, on his Notalotofpeopleknowthat blog, had checked the published temperature graphs for three weather stations in Paraguay against the temperatures that had originally been recorded. Personally, from the weather I've seen in my lifetime, I still agree with those scientists that the Earth is still coming out of the last ice age and will continue to warm. It could be worse and we could be going back into our next ice age cycle. Although, if Washington DC were covered with a glacier and the federal government couldn't wreak havoc on our lives, that might not be a bad thing. So in Patagonia the mountains there were under a km of ice back 10k years ago or so. Now the mountains are like 1.5km high, so the ice was 2.5km thick there (give or take). Absent paleolithic SUVs and CFPPs, what caused all that ice to melt? I have a sense that many peoples' resistance to the idea of globalwarmingclimatechangedisruption is not necessarily whether it is happening or not, but the proposed actions in regard to the idea that it is happening. Most of the proposed burden seems to be on the developed world (kinda like why you rob a bank, that's where the money is) while China and India get a pass on doing much to move to non-emitting power sources, and money would be extracted from those who have it to be given to turd-world kleptocrats for indeterminate feel-good reasons. And there is some irrational fear of nukes (and new nuke technologies) along with more advanced ideas, because spending money on those somehow offends the sensibilities of alternative energy proponents. Then there are the Obama admin debacles with Solyndra and the battery companies, and the fact that most of the solar and wind machine components are Chinese... --R (who watches sea level rise and fall a coupla times a day, every day) On 2/13/15 10:02 AM, Curt Raymond via Mercedes wrote: Whats causing glaciers to recede? Re: [MBZ] Best oil trader says oil prices may plunge some more
I like this idea: use tariffs to stabilize the price of domestic oil at $65/barrel or so. Cripes we've got solar all over the dang place. One of the really smart moves (I think anyway) is covering old landfills with 'em. A month or two should be no problem. I add 1oz Seafoam gas additive to every gallon of gas I buy for the snowmobile just in case I forget about it. The snowmobiles sit all summer, April to November at least and start in the fall although they run a lot better after the fresh gas hits the carb. Ideally you'd have a super strong tank you could suck all the air out of. Good question. There are some materials that enhance the storage of gasoline, such as Stabil, but even that doesn't give gasoline the staying power of diesel. Gasoline is a more VOC [Volatile Organic Compound] and the Volatile components gas off in evaporation, or degrade to less volatile by re-combination to form varnish and other less volatile materials.. thus, stale gas which does not ignite well, which produces less heat energy, and isn't as desirable. Safe storage is yet another issue for gasoline. Since it is a VOC, it will emit vapors, which will ignite easily, and present a real hazard for residential storage. Gasoline in an enclosed space, with any ignition source, [ie, static electric spark, for example] is a real threat to safety. All those factors strongly influence my decision to have diesel generators and equipment at my ranch, which is remote from any fire service, and being remote, requires fuel storage. Bottom line, diesel equipment costs more, diesel cost more, safety isn't free. Its sad to see the energy companies be so short sighted but of course we've seen it time and time again. The car destroyed the wagon business and none of the wagon makers made the leap. TV is getting destroyed by the internet it refuses to embrace, same with newspapers although that is slowly slowly changing. Renewables are the future. Re: [MBZ] Best oil trader says oil prices may plunge some more
A very strong point in this discussion is the absolute strangle hold EPA has on all new refinery development. Quickly, as oil supply increases, we reach a production capacity limit. Just a little research will reveal that there has been no new refinery construction allowed by EPA in the past 25 years. Current refinery operations are running very old, very tired, equipment, which fails to take full advantage of newly developed, more efficient, and cleaner designs. Government intervention, via EPA, and other agencies, have the effect of limiting fuel supplies, which drive up cost to consumers. While we tend to think of single issue solutions, that doesn't work in a complex multiple issue environment. Bringing in more crude oil without increasing capacity to process it and distribute the processed product does not work.. The entire chain of production has to be considered. Personally, I don't feel the news media, congress, or the public, are looking at the entire picture. OTOH.. it does feel comforting to fill up at the pumps and spend 1/2 what I had been. It’s not as crazy as it sounds.' It’s noisy, but you don’t have to tip it. (Infinium Robotics) A Singapore restaurant plans to use drones to transport food and drinks from the kitchen to a wait station near customers’ tables by the end of this year. Infinium Robotics, the Singapore company that’s developing the drones for restaurant chain Timbre, showed off the technology here: It has spent the past two weeks testing the technology at the restaurant before it opens each night for business. Delivering plates of food and drink to individual tables sounds like a recipe for disaster. How does the drone know where to hover? What if someone bumps into the drone or is standing in its way? While Infinium Robotics claims it’s all technically possible, Timbre won’t be delivering food from the kitchen straight to customers’ tables. It wants to preserve a human touch. So the drones will fly from the kitchen to two stations frequented by waiters. The routes are 30 and 60 feet. The drones are programmed to fly no lower than 8½ feet, so as not to crash into any guests. “There’s no chance at all you will hit anything,” says Infinium Robotics chief executive Junyang Woon. The drones automatically charge while waiting in the kitchen. After the chef puts an order on the drone, he hits a button on a keypad and the drone automatically flies to one of two wait stations. Sense-and-avoid technology built into the drone won’t allow it to land at the wait station if anything is in its way. The drones are also equipped with sonar and an infrared sensor. A waiter then removes the food or drink from the drone and hits a button that sends it back to the kitchen. The 5 1/3-pound drones can carry just over four pounds of food. Infinium Robotics, which develops the hardware and software, is working on a model that will carry twice as much food. Woon says this isn’t just a gimmick or marketing stunt to help restaurants draw in customers. He points out that unlike a human or traditional robot, the drone flies above congested areas, providing more efficient service. “Its job is to help the waiters, to alleviate some of their mundane tasks,” Woon said. “If they let the robots do the job they can concentrate on interacting with customers to bring about higher customer satisfaction and dining experience.” ___ http://www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://mail.okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com All posts are the result of individual contributors and as such, those individuals are responsible for the content of the post. AV gas stores much longer than auto gas, but I don't know why. That is one of the prime issues with using auto gas in aircraft - some don't get flown all that often. I add Stabil to every barrel (55 gal.) that I purchase, just in case something happens, and I don't get to burn it out of the aircraft tanks within a month. On Fri, Feb 13, 2015 at 11:38 AM, G Mann via Mercedes mercedes@okiebenz.com wrote: Good question. -- OK Don NSA: The only branch of government that actually listens to US citizens! *“Travel is fatal to prejudice, bigotry and narrow-mindedness, and many of our people need it sorely on these accounts.”* – Mark Twain There are three kinds of men: The ones that learns by reading. IIRC, the FCC regs for the un-licensed spectrum require that the devices accept interference, but are prohibited from interfering with licensed services. I'm not sure about unlicensed devices interfering with other unlicensed devices. I think these things use digital codes to keep from cross-controlling each other, which would make jambing more difficult, at the power levels allowed for unlicensed operation. If you have a license to operate in that spectrum, say an amateur license, and happen to point your 1.5 KW signal via a nice focused antenna towards a drone while trying to hit that meteor trail for a bit of long distance skip, then the smoke could be fun to watch. Turn clockwise (cw) and the pump speeds up water thru thermoblock for shots. Turn counter clockwise (ccw) and the pump is used to produce steam for foamed milk. cw turn speeds pump goes from - to + as noted on the control. ccw control goes from - to + to denote amount of steam? However, steam production is not ideal so we are wondering if old caps or other electro-gizmo might be old after 40 years. Perhaps the rheostat needs a spray of DeOxit? What else in this type of electric control can go bad in years of very light service? Dan, perhaps we need to read the instructions? Below is my description to Dan yesterday about what I am seeing - Dan's notes above show he is in approximately the same quandry (choppy vibe pump noise) about producing steam. As noted, most espresso machines do not have a control that varies the pump speed. mao ___ http://www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://mail.okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com All posts are the result of individual contributors and as such, those individuals are responsible for the content of the post. [MBZ] 240D intrigues me!
So as you all know, I replaced that bitch of a hose under the thermostat housing a few days ago. I drove around town for a few days, no leaks from the new hose, no overheating. There was however a small amount of coolant loss from the rubber o ring that goes around the tstat and keeps the housing cover from leaking. I didn't make anything of it as that tstat has been in and out so many times that the seal is probably compressed. Anyway, I need to get this car to MA where it's registered so that I can have it inspected-already received a fine in the mail. So I head off to Boston today from Brunswick, Maine-roughly a 140 mile trip. The car performed flawlessly, cruising at 65-70 mph, smooth, powerful, temp holding steady even in some stop and go traffic towards the tail end of the trip. I was so proud of the little 240D, when literally, as I pull into my driveway the temp gauge starts rising! So weird. I pop the hood, the upper rad hoses are super firm, coolant is dripping from rad overflow tube but my newly replaced hose is not leaking. Well back to square one!
