I wouldn't bother changing the diff, the top gear ratio of the 4 speed is
the same as the auto box, so your highway gearing won't change. Unless you
live in a very flat area, a taller geared 240D isn't a good idea. (I've

I have a ’67 Beetle, and I will tell you that the heat and defrost work just

Here’s the deal:
The S500 may need a new MAF. I happen to have a MAF on the shelf. It’s a
different part number, but close, used on an S420. Physically, it’s the same
except that the connector comes straight out the side and not perpendicular.
I can’t find any specs on MAFs in general, only

The easiest/fastest way is probably to install it see if it works. If you
can check wiring diagrams for donor and recipient, make sure none of the
pins/functions were moved around, then give it a try.

I always said I wished my 200D had a turbo, a sunroof and a taller
fifth gear (or diff) that has been 40 years. The 4 cyl NA MB
Diesels need a taller diff and a 5 speed or an overdrive 5 speed. I
always felt it was hard on the engine to maintain the high rpm for

yes, it flares at every shift. i shift manually and try to let up on

Those air cooled engines have two major flaws for your application.
Weak to non-existent heat.
Valve adjustment interval is every 2500 miles, IIRC. That means laying on the
cold wet ground in the winter, if you don't have a garage, or a lift.

I am wondering about putting in a 300D diff also to allow lower RPM
at highway speeds. Kinda a poboy overdrive. I won't be able to find
or afford a 5 speed.

I've never used a small 220v machine,I took a class where we had nice Miller

much advantage over my 110v unit. I'd love to have a bigger machine with a
longer duty cycle but in the end mine is adequate for the work
