Yeah. Junk like stuff cobbled together is a rat rod. The
complete body, including hood and roof, of one car with a
not-so-very-uncommon engine swap does not seem to fit the
definition.

The hood and front fenders from the 240S attached to a F-250
pickup frame and a chevy small block - that could be a rat rod.

That reminds me, I haven't had the hood open on my S210 since January.
I could do as Jim suggests, but with a 210 it would cost me a grill insert,

Right before the failure, I took both latches out and cleaned/lubed them so they

Efforts to move the hood itself are just as frustrating. Neither side of

They were? Of all the VWs I had I seem to recall a little plastic cover that
went over them. There were like 8-10 in a row, and a cover the size of a candy
bar that snapped over them...

MB went to blade type fuses in the facelift on W140 chassis cars between 95 and
96. Don't know about other models. They also have a heck of a lot of them now,
too. My W220 has three fuse boxes! The W140s have two, one in front, one in

Metal fatigue and a very small cross sectional contact area. Sometimes you
would grab the fuse to twist it and the element would just fall apart, much
like the strip fuses they used in higher current applications do. In some

contact between aluminum and copper being a good thing. Not sure why, as I'm no

No metallurgist here, either, but it's Galvanic action resulting from the
electric potential between dissimilar metals - copper is slightly more
noble than aluminum. The Galvanic action removes ions from the less noble

I had a similar problem on the 300Sd that the hood would not latch down

Re: [MBZ] W124 Hood Release will not work

2015-07-15 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
I have found in some cases that if the cable jacket can move around there's too
much slack in the cable, preventing it from being pulled in enough to release
the latch. The S500 did this with the passenger side hood latch - the other
latch would release but this side wouldn't - preventing you from opening the
hood.

I tie wrapped the cable to a spot on the radiator support and it's been fine
ever since.

lot of PB on the latch, the cable, and anything else that did/didn't move,
and finally it was working fine. I guess it was just hanging up. Might be a
 similar issue with this situation.

hood itself are just as frustrating. Neither side of the hood will lift even
a little and the grill section does not budge at all. Efforts to push down
also failed. The hood does not move in any direction - I put much of my
230#'s on each side and nothing seemed to move.

That latch mechanism seems completely frozen. There was no inkling of a
problem in the past - I changed the fog light bulb approx 5 days ago and
 everything operated normally.

If I remove the lower engine cover will I be able to release the hood from
below? I don't recall seeing the latch last time I was under the front end.

If all my efforts fail, would this be a job for a Indy or should I bite the
bullet and take it to a dealer?

Bought my first Mercedes - a 9 year old 1973 280 - from a shady Iranian, at
night in a shady neighborhood near Tysons Corner, VA. We literally drove
it down the street 100 yards, turned around and returned to the house,
after which I wrote Mr. Tony Alami a check for $4700. Those were the
days before pre-purchase inspections were invented.

In the year we owned this wonderful car we had to repair the transmission
and vacuum locks (for about $1500), but sold the car for $4850 to a dip.

my new sensor did not fix the flaky KLIMA belt-saving feature)

Is its feature-ness less quotable if it's correctly
described as an engine-saver, rather than a belt-saver?

This feature not only saved the belt, and thus perhaps
the engine on the 190D when the compressor seized, but it
saved the compressor too! I disassembled it and burnished
the minor scoring, lubed and reassembled, and that compressor
has worked just fine thereafter.

My 2nd car was a 1977 Saab that cost slightly more than a Corvette when new. (I
paid the original owner about 10% of what he paid, still a pretty big deal for a
20 year old who delivered pizzas to pay for college)
It came with all records, so I just kept up with the maintenance schedule.
Imagine my surprise a year later, when I found out that the air box had a
removable plate that snapped into the bottom of the filter element for an
airtight seal, and the filter was smashed onto it off center and leaking badly,
by the biggest foreign car indy in East Lansing. When I showed them the smashed
filter and invoice that said they installed it, their so what? attitude spoke
volumes. I too, lived on a dirt road.

That reminds me, I haven't had the hood open on my S210 since January.
I could do as Jim suggests, but with a 210 it would cost me a grill insert,
A/C condenser, and radiator at the minimum. If I could get the headlight out
I think it would be easy. Crawling under with a flashlight, I just can't seem
to get a straight shot at the latch from below.

Right before the failure, I took both latches out and cleaned/lubed them so they
would actually latch. I suspect the cable fell out of the left one after I put
it
back together.
