I have only one black cherry dermader plant. Bought it at the reiman gardens plant sale. If I don't eat em all, I will try to start some next year. Romas from seed are doing ok. None ripe yet but the Black CHerry. Dermaders have been liking the rain. Most are over 6 feet tall. Green beans likewise. I have a 2 layer Berlin Wall of green beans over 6 feet tall. they are all vining all over each other and up into the trees where they can reach. I won't be pickin em up thar! Black Cherry are the first dermaders of the year. I have a volunteer in the raised bad for root crops that looks like it will be some form of cherry dermader. I now have a cute white-tailed yard bunny that was decapitating my pepper plants, so I sprayed bitter apple on the tender leaves (same stuff I use on houseplants to deter the cat from chewing the leaves). [MBZ] A Gullah Halloween Story and How to Cook Possum
http://islandconnectionnews.com/?p=1949 Gullah ghost story By Sidi Limehouse, Rosebank Farms The English began to populate the Charleston area in the late 17th century and their numbers multiplied in the early 18th century. Most came from Barbados - another English colony - because Barbados had become all used up; the land, that is. Plantations had grown and the tillable land was under ownership and planted. Charlestowne and the surrounding islands were new land and opportunity awaited those who chose to come to this new frontier. These people were knowledgeable about what they faced; forests and swamps. To clear the land and to drain the swamps they needed labor and they brought some labor in the form of slaves, but they needed many more slaves. Thus, the slave trade brought the labor and the planters borrowed money to buy them. Creating a working and profitable plantation was no easy task. The problems the plantation owners faced were numerous and daunting. One problem - who was going to oversee these workers - was quickly solved. The English looked to Scotland for help. They recruited young Scotsmen to train the slaves, to teach them a new language. The young Scots were most successful. That is why the language known as Gullah has such a Scottish brogue. The tale I am relating to you was told to me in 1949 by Mr. Ben Brown who was then 98 years old. (At the time, I was 11 years old.) He had been a slave living at Mullet Hall. He had belonged to Simon Legare, owner of several plantations on John's, Wadmalaw, and Edisto islands. He and I were friends and I learned much from Mr. Brown. Things have changed since those days; the really important things remain the same. We all spoke Gullah. We were passengers on the same ship. This tale is told how I heard it, in Gullah. There will be no translation at the end: Gal, she beena kinda diffent she ain hanged out wit she kind. She ben a loner eber since she 3 or 4 year old. By en by she git de repetaton she mus be crazy. Is it the Bt? could be, it is a poison bred into the plant. Is it something else? Could be. I started having trouble with corn products 30 years, which just about coincides with when the first Bt corn came out. I have no science. Just results of trial and error food elimination. What I have been able to figure out is that when I was a kid, all our food came from the farm, except sometimes bread. [MBZ] OT: Windows 7 Questions
I have just installed Windows 7 Home Premium on our Dell Inspiron 600m (old, outdated, underpowered, etc.) dual-boot with Linux laptop. I have some questions: 1. How do I run Windows Update? 2. How do I manually run Windows authorization/activation (which must be done in the first 30 days)? There is a Window feature in the Control Panel called Windows Process Activation Service with the sub-entries of: - .NET Environment - Configuration APIs - Process Model Are these things I should turn on? 3. What are XPS documents? I want to be able to print to postscript so I can transfer the postscript (with all the fonts) to my Linux system to make new PDFs to replace ones which were made on a Windows system without all fonts embedded (which are hard to read on Linux). Is that at all related? 4. Installing Windows 7, of course, over-wrote my GRUB boot sector information. I have a procedure to fix the boot system of our main computer, which is single-boot and has /boot as /dev/sda1: 1. Boot SystemRescue CD. 2. Execute startx 3. At a terminal prompt, type, grub enter. 4. Type, root (hd0,0). 5. Type, setup (hd0). 6. Type, quit. 7. Reboot. Since the laptop has First partition - Windows 7 Second partition - another NTFS partition Third partition - /boot, should I change line 4 above to: Type, root (hd0,2) ? 5. Can I go ahead and install Dell's XP drivers and have things work properly? The network is now working properly, so I figure I should not install that driver, but the audio is not working. 6. Anything else I should know? I don't know details on Curt's car, but it's not usually possible to engage two gears at once by manipulation of the external linkages on a functional manny tranny, is it? Mitch. Yes, a manual trans can be in 2 gears at once and lock up the trans that way. I had a 66 frod bronco 3 spd. The column shift linkage was very crummy; thin pot metal. It would often not get out of 1st when it went into second if you shifted normally. To keep it from jamming, you had to run the shift lever in 3 distinct movements: up toward R, forward across the H; then up into 2nd. I replaced the junk factory shifter with a cheap floor shift from JCWhitney. It was some better, but you still could lock up the trans if you tried to shift fast. A couple months after I sold it, I heard the kid that bought it had blown up the transmission. The kid was a spoiled brat, and he tried to hotrod and got the transmission in 2 gears. The family owned the local scrap yard, so at under 60,000 miles, it was cut up for scrap. This was a very rare one year only U-110 Bronco with factory soft top, door inserts and soft doors. I've had this happen in 110s too, particularly when the ball socket breaks off on one linkage. However since Curt's symptoms are one way, and not both forward and back, I don't think it is the trans in 2 gears at once. ___ http://www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://mail.okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com

Re: [MBZ] OT: Golf TDI
Actually, it is, which is why the shifter mechanism has some set up that prevents leaving one fork engaged while moving to another. If one of the three cables is broken, it will stay in whatever gear selected with that cable AND engage another one, causing it to lock up. Constant mesh except for the reverse idler, the shifter just engages dog clutches to select which gears transmit power, the others just free-wheel. Could just as easily be a broken shifter fork, too, doing exactly the same thing. I want to be able to print to postscript so I can transfer the postscript (with all the fonts) to my Linux system to make new PDFs to replace ones which were made on a Windows system without all fonts embedded (which are hard to read on Linux). Is that at all related? When I must use MSWin, I use PDFCreator to print PDF files. I believe it is based on Ghostscript - and although I haven't tested it extensively, it seems to embed the fonts. GPL licensed. http://sourceforge.net/projects/pdfcreator/ 4. Installing Windows 7, of course, over-wrote my GRUB boot sector information. GRUB or GRUB2? They are quite different. I have a procedure to fix the boot system of our main computer, which is single-boot and has /boot as /dev/sda1: 1. Boot SystemRescue CD. 2. Execute startx 3. At a terminal prompt, type, grub enter. Kinda redundant to startx from a terminal just to open an xterm, isn't it? *smiles* 4. Type, root (hd0,0). 5. Type, setup (hd0). 6. Type, quit. 7. Reboot. That looks like GRUB legacy. Since the laptop has First partition - Windows 7 Second partition - another NTFS partition Third partition - /boot, should I change line 4 above to: Type, root (hd0,2) ? Maybe. I tried to migrate a physical Win7 to a virtual machine and this dual partition thwarted me and I failed. On mine, the first partition was very small and was the Win7 boot. The second partition was the real Win location. From my experience, Win7 is ornery about booting so I'm reluctant to advise Just try it. But the root command looks correct for legacy GRUB. However, I gave up on dual boot a long time ago. MS Win is now always in a virtual machine (VirtualBox most recently). So long as there is enough RAM, it works just fine 6. Anything else I should know? I sure like having my MSWin as a guest OS. It means I don't have to have as much software installed in MSWin because both the guest and the host are running. And I set up the networking so the guest can't reach the internet. And it's easy to make a backup of the guest - or migrate to another host. Oh, and I can copy/paste between the guest and the host. The only disadvantage I've found is the need for RAM. I have an laptop that shipped with WinXP, that I put the maximum of 1G RAM and it was quite usable running a OpenBox on the host and WinXP on the guest. Craig, 1. Windows Update: Short: type windows update in the dialogue box that opens just above the start button, after you click the start button. Long: you should have a Control Panel option on the menu when you click on the Start button (which is the Windows symbol, round and in bottom left corner). Select the Control Panel, look for a choice that includes Windows Update. 5. In my research I read on the internet, if the Win7 install does not have a driver that works, you should be able to install the driver from the OE CD and it probably will work and won't break anything. I need to correct that. On the later 124 cars, what I said is correct, but on the 1st generation, it _just_ may be possible to remove the chrome surround from the side and from below. Re: [MBZ] W124 Hood Won't Release
Hi Gang - After trying everything to get the hood open (thanks for all the great suggestions), I used a die grinder with a thin cutting blade that went through that plastic like butter!Once I had the grill insert cut out I thought I'd give it anohter try and see if we could get it open. I asked my wife to help and while I sat on the hood, she tried to pull the little tab that pops through grill when the release is pulled. It seemed to move s 1/4 or so but it wasn't going farther than that. So I got down and studied the situation and finally focused on the pull latch that sticks through the grill. It appeared the threads of the bolt that holds the tab on was rubbing against the radiator support bar! Sure enough, I used a screw driver with almost no force, it came around that round support!Several months ago and many, many hood opening and closings later, I had replaced the little tab that sticks through the grill. I must have put the bolt in backwards and eventually, the threads on the bolt caught on the support and refused to let it go. I pulled the bolt out and reversed it so it would clear from now on. It was a dumb mistake which cost me around $100 for the replacement grill and insert plus many hours agonizing over how I'd get it open and finally about 3 hours to actually remove and replace the grill.
So it's fixed and at least the replacement grill looks better than my old one. [MBZ] The wife is almost killed by a 124
I have moved the last non running car today from old okie acres which was a 560sel she killed several years ago. I had her drive an 87 td while I followed in the trailer and truck. I noticed odd driving behavior on the highway. When we get home she said everything was fine then all the sudden has noise from the front end and it shakes. I get in it to move it around back and it acts like the right wheel is about to fall off. Re: [MBZ] GMO Wuz: OT: Blendtec recipes, anyone?
You grow your own black cherry tomatoes from seed? Incidentally, my litter-composting days are over since I moved. I now have a cute white-tailed yard bunny that was decapitating my pepper plants, so I sprayed bitter apple on the tender leaves (same stuff I use on houseplants to deter the cat from chewing the leaves). I also tried the same spray on the fragrant yellow roses, which are irresistible to Japanese beetles. Seems to worth in both applications. Its all good. I don't understand what is wrong with GMO food myself. What I can tell you is that products made from GMO corn turn my insides out. This leads me to be skeptical of beef and pork and chicken and turkey fed GMO grain, and even venison here where most of their diet is gmo corn. Then we started buying milk in place of milking a Hereford. and so it went until here we are now. Almost nothing is homegrown or farm fresh, or eaten in season. BTW, had the first helping of homegrown green beans tonight, along with a heritage black cherry tomato. Great real food! Had a nice crop of sugar pea pods this summer so far.Way better than cat poop jelly! So I am seeking out things to do with exotic grains that Monsanto has not heard of, and new types of those exotic seeds (grains) IMHO, it is a conservative approach. Conserve. Conservation. It is what we all do with our old MBs. Not a trendy term. The state conservation commissions set up to conserve natural resources, have become DNRs with the mission of dictating who gets to use natural resources. The socialist approach, not a conservation or conservative approach. Even andrew is a conservative at heart, as are all liberals. He does an excellent job conserving old MBs. When GMO is only accelerating the plant selection that has been done for eons, I don't have a problem with it. When GMO is grafting in bits of other organisms, we may run into trouble. Such may be the case with Bt grains. .02 ... ___ http://www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://mail.okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com ___ http://www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://mail.okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com ___ http://www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://mail.okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com
