[MBZ] OT - Power partially out
Sitting at my desk checking emails at 11 last night, the world suddenly went DARK and heat pump, TV - everything - cut off. 'First though was Vehicle hit a pole or a transformer blew, but there was no noise - just sudden quiet and darkness. I said to SHWMBO in adjoining room, Don't leave me, I can't stand and move around safely in complete darkness. She replied, Well, right now, I can't do it very well either. I quickly recovered, though, and whipped my iPhone out and punched the flashlight app on, which saved the day/night. Hobbled across hall into kitchen, looked out and realized that neighbors still had power. Noticed stove clock still on and refrigerator running and thought, Hey, what's this? We still have some power. Flipped kitchen light, lights came on; back to hall, flipped switch - no light; flipped switch for second floor landing; light came on. 'Began to think, Lost one leg of our power supply. Hobbled upstairs to check bedroom lights and heat pump - lights OK, heat pump inop. 'Back to kitchen, found flashlight and new batteries for SWMBO, who escorted me into basement and to breaker box. 'Found all breakers ON and OK. 'Looking more like loss of one leg of power supply at transformer. 'Back to first floor; hobbled outside to heat pump units to chk breakers there - found all good. Told SWMBO, Go to bed if ya want, I'm gonna sit here in kitchen for a while and call power co. 'Couldn't find # for power co. in directory. Finally told Siri to call 911. Asked emergency dispatcher if she could help me find # for reporting power out. 'Told me to call 411. Oh, of course, thanks. 'Got the # and called; after listening to series of options, finally spoke to a lady who seemed to understand that I had a partial outage - loss of one leg of power supply. Man called coupla minutes later to confirm - Yes, I have only partial power - 120 volts in part of house, none in rest of house and no 240-volt power - heat pumps do not run. He replied, OK, I got it, I think you're right. 'Sounds like you've lost one leg. You should see a technician pulling up in les than 30 minutes. Thank you, Sir. I'll wait. Shonuff, bout 25 minutes later, truck pulled up in front. Tech, checked pwr in meter base; one leg of power missing. Found loose connection at transformer; in about 15 min, power was back on, and I headed to bed glad that I had pursued it then, instead of waiting 'til morning. ___ http://www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://mail.okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com

Re: [MBZ] OT Mini-van dual zone a/c
Thanks to everybody for the advice and enlightenment. For the most part, you have all reinforced what I was thinking. Just wanted to make sure I didn't miss anything. Actually, the evaporator itself is probably not leaking. The service adviser described the leaks as being in the o-ring joints that connect the several lengths of aluminum tubing connecting the front condenser to the rear evaporator setup. Those joints were all too corroded to separate. Presumably the tubing connections at the rear evaporator were similarly corroded. Of course the dealer's solution is to rip it all out and replace it. And from a dealer's -spare no cost to the customer- perspective this makes some sense. When I googled the problem, I saw some photos that showed the couplings are aluminum, tapped and held together with steel bolts. As you would expect, a little road salt would make the dis-similar metals fuse into an inseparable mass. It would take mucho time, skill and tools to replace just those joints. My wife says she doesn't care about the rear air conditioning, now that the kids left the nest. So I'll probably plug or bypass, as appropriate, the lines to the rear. To keep the records accurate, I can't speak extensively about Toyota, but this Sienna has been remarkably trouble free for the last 175,000 miles. The four Mercedes diesels I've driven over the past 30 years have never had an air conditioner failure. The only significant air conditioner failure we have ever experienced was in a Dodge Caravan my wife previously drove. Thanks again for the advice and help, Ned Kleinhenz Heat the joints with an acetylene torch. Heating dissimilar metals with break the nearly unbreakable bond. Re: [MBZ] WTB: crankshaft hub
Peter, I've had mine apart and replaced the seal once already, and the seal rides the hub, hub goes over the end of the crank. I think mine is leaking because I used an aftermarket seal and the hub is scored. A few years ago the price for a new hub was about $80, now they are over $200. Manual says the seal can be set deeper if the hub is grooved, I tried that but maybe I didn't set it deep enough. I'd like to get a used hub and (if grooved) see if a machinist can weld a bead on the groove and then turn it down. Goal is to minimize down time. I'm also tempted to try JB Weld and sand/polish that smooth. -- Max Dillon Charleston SC '87 300TD '95 E300 Just put a collar on the damper where the seal rides. MUCH faster/simpler/cheaper. It is done all the time. Metric size is no problem as most seals or bearings on post WWII merkun stuff are metric. The brand on the last one I used is Dichtomatik Americas. Product is called shaft-eze. https://catalog.dichtomatik.us/en/products/Seals/ShaftEzeShaftSleeves.aspx If you have the seal number from the last one you used, take it to the bearing supply house and get a seal and the shaft -eze to match. Minimal down time as it will take you 5 min to install both when you get the damper off. The shaft-eze came with a steel cup to use to install it over the shaft or hub. Otherwise look up the MB part number and take that in. The bearing houses have good cross reference resources. OR, you can look it up on the SKF seal crossreference online from the MB part number. ___ http://www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://mail.okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com

[MBZ] ac compressor failure 300td 1982
Folks my perfect running 3 month old R4 compressor failed today. AC had been running for maybe 2 minutes and i was going probably 10 mph. Outside air temp about 90f. As i started off i heard and explosion POW and i assumed i had had a blowout, then i saw a puff of oil smoke come out from under the hood. ___ http://www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://mail.okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com ___ http://www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://mail.okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com

Re: [MBZ] OT - Power partially out
I was 'fraid they were gonna hafta change the transformer for an interior problem, but they obviously found a loose connection on outside and tightened it. This transform was installed only coupla months ago. Reminds me: 'Bout 20 years ago, a new tenant moved into one of my rental houses. One of the last things I told 'im the day he moved in was, Ya need to go to power co. and give 'em a deposit to get power turned on. Two weeks later, tenant called to report, Stove doesn't work; oven light works, but burners don't work. I dove the 18 miles or so to the house. While working diagnosis, I went to the meter and noticed that there was no seal - just like power co. and I had left it. 'Pulled meter and noticed plastic insulating pads (installed by pwr co.) preventing connection of one leg. 'Went back inside and asked tenant, Have ya been to power co. to get power turned on? His answer: No. ''Told 'im, Well, you only have 120 volts; one leg of the power is not ON. Ya need to go to power co. to get it ON. The thief had been stealing 120-volt power for 2 weeks. I drove away and heard no more about it; 'shoulda charged 'im for my trip out there to tell 'im the second time. That would be a circuit interrupter. Those are the things you see on a pole near the transmission line that look sort of like a big knife switch with some curly wires at one end. They're essentially a circuit breaker and will make a loud pop when they open. The linesman will use a hotstick to reset it. If it's really damp and cool at night when they reset it you can often see a corona around the stick and the linesman when they do this. Cool. [MBZ] OT: Solar powered 1966 VW bus (too bad it isn't a 240D)
1966 Volkswagen Bus Runs Entirely on Sunshine December 29, 2014 *– ARTICLE AND PHOTOS BY MARTIN LAMONICA OF XCONOMY http://www.xconomy.com/ –* [image: VW bus] http://cleaneasyenergy.com/cecblog/wp-content/uploads/2014/12/VW-bus.jpg Trying to run an electric car from solar cells on the car’s roof makes no sense—or so I thought. Earlier this week, I met with Daniel Theobald, the CTO of healthcare company Vecna, who has been driving a solar-powered Volkswagen bus for a year. His project won’t transform the auto industry overnight. But by taking on what most engineers would consider foolishly ambitious—a solar-powered car—he’s created a proof of concept that could lead to commercial solar vehicles, at least for some uses. In the process, he and his colleagues have created power electronics technology that could be applied to other products for Cambridge, MA-based Vecna, including its delivery robots for hospitals. Certainly, combining solar power and electric vehicles isn’t new. Many EV owners have rooftop panels on the homes. And some Toyota Prius models are equipped with solar cells embedded into the roof, which power a fan to cool the car. But making car-attached panels serve as the primary energy source is very hard. The big challenge is that on-board panels put out a tiny amount of juice compared to the power a car needs to run. [image: Daniel Theobald]Theobald was also under the impression that a solar-powered car was essentially impossible. But he wanted an electric or hybrid car that could transport his large family, so he decided to challenge his assumptions and see where it would lead. He bought a 1966 Volkswagen minibus off Craigslist, converted it to electric power (in an afternoon), and started reengineering the vehicle for solar. His conclusion: “You can have a practical vehicle that runs completely on solar.” To be sure, the VW bus looks funny—there are 10 solar panels affixed to its roof, some of which hang over the front and back. The cost of the vehicle and equipment, including very efficient, but pricey, solar panels is about $30,000. Driving on solar also restricts his range to about 20 miles if there’s no sun. But in taking on the challenge, Theobald and other Vecna engineers working on the project have created technology they’re seeking to patent, which could lead to new business opportunities. For example, airport service vehicles are outside for long periods of time and don’t need to go long distances. This is a situation in which having a solar-powered vehicle—one that wouldn’t necessarily need to be charged by plugging in—could make sense, Theobold says. “Making practical solar vehicles is something most people wrote off so in many ways, it’s a fairly unexplored problem,” he says. “But there are a lot of applications where solar-powered vehicles make a ton of sense.” There’s some crossover with Vecna’s current business, too. Engineers are now working to outfit the bus with a lithium-ion battery, which will be used in Vecna’s healthcare robots *Optimizing for the Solar+Mobility* Engineering-wise, Theobald’s project uncovered some conventions that make solar-powered passenger cars such a tough challenge. For example, the electronic components normally used in electric cars, such as the battery packs, are not optimized for the voltage that solar panels put out. Also, a significant portion of energy is lost in charging and discharging a battery, but that can be minimized. In early tests, Vecna engineers tried to have the bus run directly off the solar panels, rather than charge the battery and run off the stored energy. Powering a car largely from solar panels limits the acceleration significantly, but it can be done in city driving, they found. Driving the car at highway speeds (it can go 80 miles per hour) requires much more power than what the panels can generate in full sun. [image: Solar panel hookup]Theobald also found that the topography of a given route makes a huge difference. Driving up a big hill to bring his kids to school would kill his battery, but taking a slightly longer yet flatter route used about one-quarter of the energy. “This idea of being aware of the energy as we travel is going to become much more relevant as we start using electric vehicles,” he says. The solar-powered bus also uses a number of tricks to lighten the weight and reduce aerodynamic drag, such as using thin tires and lightweight wheels and bumpers. With more tinkering, the energy use and efficiency can be optimized further, Theobald says. For example, the lithium-ion batteries are lighter and last longer than their lead-acid cousins now installed. Another possibility is to use batteries in conjunction with ultracapacitors links:%20http://spectrum.ieee.org/energywise/energy/the-smarter-grid/supercapacitor-enhanced-hybrid-storage-could-earn-cash-for-subways, a type of storage device that can very quickly discharge power to accelerate a car, for example. Engineers are also trying to
