Re: [MBZ] Starter/Alternator/Battery Problem 240D

2015-08-18 Thread Meade Dillon via Mercedes
Shorting the starter: shorting from big terminal (battery) to big terminal
(starter power) will cause spinning but no starter engagement. Your
starter passed that simple test.

Shorting from big terminal (battery) to the small third terminal should
make the solenoid plunger (1) engage the starter gear teeth in the engine
flywheel and (2) make the starter spin and turn the engine over. Plenty of
youtube videos of starter testing and rebuild.

Most likely either battery or solenoid, but remember there are wires and
switch in between all. No fuse between battery and starter, I doubt there
is a fuse between ignition switch and starter. If automatic transmission,
there is also the neutral safety switch. Bad wiring/connection or failing
switch can rob voltage/amperage from the start signal to the solenoid and
cause no start condition.

The fifty amp charger setting would not hurt anything unless it was already
on the edge of failure. I've used that setting, I think mine is also 50
amps, and I worry about burning out the charger, not anything on the car.

This place has great prices on Bosch starter solenoids. The trick is to
research your Bosch starter model and figure out which solenoid fits. Note
that if you replace the solenoid and fix the issue, the rest of the starter
is also old and tired and may be about to fail as well.

http://aspwholesale.com/index.php?_a=categorycat_id=333

Intermittent battery drain could be battery, or something entirely
unrelated like the glow plug relay turning itself on, the radio or antenna.

Thanks for all your thoughts. Further information:

Shorting the starter results in starter spinning without engaging
 flywheel.
Solenoid *thunk* without starter turning began after my son attempted
starting with the 50 amp momentary setting on my 10 amp battery charger.
 Is
there a fuse or other component likely to have been affected by this
 event?

 TIA again.

If I used a pressure bleeder, I'd fill the tank and give it time to

Yoopers are probably the equivalent of Alaskans when it comes to
nutjobbery. To live in that rural of an area you’ve got to be a little
off kilter, I believe.

Bought our first house (in Indianapolis) from a guy and his new wife who
were going to run a hunting lodge 40 miles north of Manistique in the
Hiawatha National Forest. Logging roads were it for transportation, and
snowmobiles mandatory for winter travel.

The wife’s daughter was friends with my secretary’s daughter. Word was
that mom bailed after the first winter and swore to never return.

I was once told the mosquito was the state bird of the UP.

Between MN and the UP, I'd pick the UP. Too bad the yoopers are

They are all outdone by the frootloops in CA, the nutjobs in the
Northeast, particularly NY/NJ and the IL mafia.

Yoopers tend to be characters, and I like that. One winter in the UP and
you figure out the CA liberal model does not work. You learn to take
care of yourself and your neighbors, or you die.

I know some Yoopers. They all have good characteristics but then some

I've seriously considered MN since we lived there in the late 70's,

and everything was cooler. Still have only 1, 2, R, no 3 or 4.Towed
home and swapped for the rusty trusty 300TD and off to the shore,
again, successfully. My wife said that it was karma payback for

What brand of filter is in the trans?

I'd skip the kickdown switch test unless you know there is a heavy rug over it.

Buy a Mann Transmission filter and a gasket. Change the fluid and
filter. You should be back up and running.

The filter is a weak spot in the 124 AT, and according to the
owner/GURU at Sun Valley, the other brands of filters collapse, and
plug up the fluid flow. That limits you to 1 and 2.

I about lost it, because I thought the whole at had bit the dust.
But before I did too many rash things, i called Sun Valley, and he
diagnosed and prescribed the Mann filter.

Now that I have used up my supply of elring filters from Q, I only
buy Mann. I liked the elring because the filter and gasket come
together. With Mann you have to buy the gasket separately. I've
only had that happen once, and I managed to drive it slowly 20 miles
to the closest line shack, where I conveniently had a 240D and a
300SDL stashed. Drove one of the other cars home and then fixed it
the next weekend.

2015-08-18 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
I like just putting bake fluid in the reservoir and just using the pressure
bleeder to provide pressure. You have fewer problems with bubbles and
potential foaming, I’ve found. It’s not a big deal to have to pull the cap and
replenish the fluid occasionally.

I would add that I had an unfortunate incident with an “Easy Bleed” one time
where the cap popped off the reservoir during bleeding, spraying brake fluid
all over the place. Did some damage to my paint.

Ever since then I always put a towel over the reservoir and bleeder when it’s
under pressure. That way if something does pop loose it won’t spray brake
fluid all over.

To be honest, I prefer suction bleeding with a hand vacuum pump and overflow
bottle. It takes a little longer, but it works well for me. After the
incident with the pressure bleeder I’m a bit gun shy about having pressurized
brake fluid around my car...

The other thing you can do with a pressurized bleeder if put the fresh fluid
in at the wheels, and that helps push the air up and out at the high spot,
 the MC.

You can find the procedure online. I did this once, when I could not find a
 way to bleed the ABS.

ABS brake bleeding is more tricky than plain dual circuit, which are a little
more complicated than the old single circuit brakes.

Yoopers are probably the equivalent of Alaskans when it comes to nutjobbery.
To live in that rural of an area you’ve got to be a little off kilter, I
believe.

Bought our first house (in Indianapolis) from a guy and his new wife who were
going to run a hunting lodge 40 miles north of Manistique in the Hiawatha
National Forest. Logging roads were it for transportation, and snowmobiles
mandatory for winter travel.

The wife’s daughter was friends with my secretary’s daughter. Word was that
mom bailed after the first winter and swore to never return.

I was once told the mosquito was the state bird of the UP.

Re: [MBZ] Diesel smart

2015-08-18 Thread David Bruckmann via Mercedes
All the first-series Canadian-market Smart cars were diesels. Then they ruined
it with the second series by offering only the gas model, coinciding with the
start of sales into the US market.

Unfortunately the B-Class, which has been offered in Canada for about a decade
now, was only sold in a gasser config. Presumably to protect Smart sales. The
Smart fuel economy numbers are unimpressive given what a small crappy car it
is. Even my 2002 Golf TDI got pretty close numbers, and there are now numerous
other vehicles on the European market, normal in size, that get better fuel
results.

The real problem with those first Smarts cars is the transmission, which is
undeniably horrendous.

The other thing you can do with a pressurized bleeder if put the
fresh fluid in at the wheels, and that helps push the air up and out
at the high spot, the MC.

You can find the procedure online. I did this once, when I could not

ABS brake bleeding is more tricky than plain dual circuit, which are
a little more complicated than the old single circuit brakes.

http://www.jensenakins.com/hardware.html

Between MN and the UP, I'd pick the UP. Too bad the yoopers are
controlled by the MI legislature. Too bad northern WI is controlled
by the wackos in Madison, although there has been some improvement in
WI the past few years. Too bad northern MN is controlled by the MN
legislature, who vie with madison and the wackos in Iowa City for who
is the most wacko.

They are all outdone by the frootloops in CA, the nutjobs in the
Northeast, particularly NY/NJ and the IL mafia.

Yoopers tend to be characters, and I like that. One winter in the UP

I like American Wild, from La Vida Loca Not a fruit wine, but not a

http://www.lavidalocawinery.com/

Eagles landing has 3 Best of winners at this year's state fair. I
really like their Volga Lake Blush under the Marquette label. Very
nice flavor. Decent price too. Their Serenety and Blackberry are
the other two Best of varieties from the state fair.

http://www.eagleslandingwinery.com/ourwines.html

These wineries go head to head with CA or NY and hold their own. The
Wine Institute at ISU has a lot to do with that.

Maiden Head Winery (WI) is also a Cidery I had a bottle of their
Honeycrisp cyder recently, and it was good a year after I bought it.

If I had my druthers I'd head East to NS and buy a winery
overlooking the Bay of Fundy. Or to Nelson, NZ for a comparable
setting.

Re: [MBZ] Diesel smart

2015-08-18 Thread Curt Raymond via Mercedes
A 2002 Golf TDI should stomp on a Smart Car's fuel economy numbers.Golf is
rated for 35/44 with the user average on fueleconomy.gov at 48, 2012 Smart
Coupe is rated for 34/38 with the user number at 38.My '98 Jetta has regularly
been turning in numbers over 50 this summer. I suspect the 2005 Golf I just got
with its more powerful engine to be slightly below that.
This is why the Smart makes no sense. Its too expensive and the fuel economy
sucks for what you get. For the same price you could buy any other sub-compact,
get twice as big a car and the same or BETTER fuel economy numbers.

PEI is a bit north, but I can see NS.

Southern NS is really nice. I used to go to Halifax, and it was a nice place,
too.

Its interesting to see wineries popping up outside of traditional grape growing
regions, theres one in Presque Isle, Maine growing some magic hybrid grape that
can take the cold.Last I knew there was a vodka distillery too.
