[MBZ] master cylinder
I finally got a rebuilt unit and replaced the master brake cylinder in my 115 300D yesterday afternoon. I bench bled the master cylinder before installation and now have a good solid pedal. Still need to bleed the wheel cylinders - hopefully this evening so I can drive it again. Must be 6 weeks or so since my problem developed. Took a month to get the rebuild kit and then I could not get it back together in a manner that I thought acceptable so I finally ordered a rebuild. One issue that remains, and I had hoped would be solved in all of this is the brake warning light on the dash still does not wish to go out. I believe it to be the sender that warns of an uneven pressure between front and back. It was a problem before and I have had the sensor unplugged for a while. When I dismantled the old unit to clean it, that part was pretty gummed up so I thought the new one should be clean and make it functional again. Maybe my sensor is damaged or inoperative? I won't get too far into it until I bleed the wheels and drive it a bit but I would rather have it intact than unplugged. Anyone know anything much about this? I assume Curly's spell checker meant “lovely” when referring to the Zenith’s! :-) My M108 may not be the quickest off the line with only 2.5l, but it runs great with no hesitation at all in acceleration. It loves 55-75 mph, but will get to 90 in a heartbeat and sometimes find myself cruising along at 85 on the interstate. As far as the vapor lock issue is concerned, yes, it can be a problem and it was for me until I realized the fuel return valve was totally petrified with fuel sediment after sitting for close to 15 years. Tom Hanson has the correct part at the Classic Center. I’d get the whole valve as it has to work just right. Make sure it is threaded correctly and tight. If not it will spew fuel directly onto the hot exhaust manifold. Ask me how I know… I am guessing the vapor lock occurs in the large metal fuel line that passes directly in front of the valve cover as that is the only place the fuel line passes something that gets really warm. I have seen some of these motors with custom insulated fuel hoses replacing this line. I love my 250S with the M108 engine. Thanks again to Jaime for the advice and occasional unobtainium part. You are correct that there are two sensors - 1 for pressure imbalance and the other for low fluid. They are wired together in the sense that the low level sensor has 2 wires for it and the pressure sensor has one lead that appears to come on from the first. Like an oil pressure gauge, I assume (there it is again) that it grounds out when it puts the light on. The bebuilt unit came with neither sensor. The level sensor is built into the resevoir and is not removable. I have not checked to see if it works. I could do so while bleeding the brakes as the level will no doubt go down. I am not pressure bleeding but just opening the wheel cylinder bleed screws while someone else steps on the pedal for me. I believe the issue to be with the pressure sensor as unplugging the lead from it puts the light out. It has a small white plastic pointer on it and I believe that the pointer will be moved one way or the other by the plunger in the body of the master cylinder when it is moved one way or the other by the pressure from the main plunger. One thought that comes to mind right now is that it might be in order to loosen it off enough to bleed it too just in case there is some air in there. Will try that tonight. If that does not work and it is still wonky after I bleed the brakes, I will remove it temporarily and test with a meter to see if it is grounded out all of the time.
