Re: [MBZ] EMP - was: Advantages of a large shop

I worked with "B" and "C" series Cummins engines in stationary applications,
and they were very rugged and durable. Can't speak for longevity as most I
worked with rarely saw more than a few hundred hours a year, but they did run
well and were very low maintenance.

Re: [MBZ] Hillarycare. was: Barum Tires

2016-02-04 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
We are looking seriously at a "concierge" physician practice.

The wife has multiple medical issues, none life threatening, thank goodness,
but a number that are chronic and require her to see a doctor or doctors
monthly if not more often.

After looking at what we pay out in deductibles, it's approaching the annual
fee of a concierge physician's service. In this case we would essentially pay
out the lump sum annually and she could see them as many times as she needed,
and also (hopefully) get a higher level or quality of care due to the doctor
not having to run a conveyor belt practice to stay solvent.

We'll see. We're still researching this.

[MBZ] OT: Email Clients-Outlook vs Thunderbird

2016-02-04 Thread Scott Ritchey via Mercedes
What do the Windoze users here think about Outlook vs Thunderbird as an
email client. I have used Outlook for decades, but lately, I am
experiencing odd "rules" behavior and periodic corruption of pst files and
the profile. I suspect some of this is the result of accessing the same pst
files from multiple computers (one at a time) and occasional computer
shutdown before all loose ends are cleaned up. When I "upgraded" to Office
2013 things seemed to get worse, bug-wise. Creating new profiles from
scratch seemed to help in the past but I wonder if there isn't a more
dependable client. I looked online and found strong opinions both ways.

What do folks here think?

We are looking seriously at a "concierge" physician practice.

The wife has multiple medical issues, none life threatening, thank
goodness, but a number that are chronic and require her to see a
doctor or doctors monthly if not more often.

After looking at what we pay out in deductibles, it's approaching
the annual fee of a concierge physician's service. In this case we
would essentially pay out the lump sum annually and she could see
them as many times as she needed, and also (hopefully) get a higher
level or quality of care due to the doctor not having to run a
conveyor belt practice to stay solvent.

We'll see. We're still researching this.

Wow. Looks sort of shady in a way.

>From what I could glean, you're expected or commit to pay a monthly amount
>into a bank account you give power of attorney to the group to. They can then

You are a recipient of said payments for your medical bills as well.

If I'm relatively healthy, I get screwed because I'm covering all the sick
people's bills. A family of three or more is expected to pay in nearly
$900/month. Ouch.

Re: [MBZ] Inside news on the mujis v. rooshans

2016-02-04 Thread Rich Thomas via Mercedes
It is more like 200 generations of men who have known nothing but war.
The followers of mahomet have been at this bidness for 14 centuries if
not longer. Now, in fairness, the yurpeens engaged in the same bidness
for multiple centuries as well, up until the last one mostly, and have
generally sorted themselves out though the mohametans are giving it a go
again there.

On Charlie's war, I remember reading somewhere that the mujis up in the
mountains were getting pounded pretty good by the rooshan helicopters
because their weapons (cannons or something they were using to shoot at
them) could not elevate their barrels high enough to shoot at the
helos. The Stingers leveled that playing field by elevating the
discourse and gave the rooshans big problems.

have very little basis for figuring out what to do (and why to do it) in

This is an immense problem, but not an impossible one. It will take

unconditional US retreat while allowing Taliban to regroup in neighboring
sanctuaries. Afghan terrain was a major factor in ancient times but smart
use of airpower can overcome most of that, especially with modern

But the social/political dimension is critical for any lasting victory.
The

Having said all that, chronic stupidity trumps all.

I don't use MS Win. But from what I can tell, Outlook is one
of the biggest weaknesses.

Thunderbird is pretty well behaved on my Linux machines - but
mostly I used Claw-mail, an port of Sylpheed. Those two are
my favorite graphical email clients. I know Sylpheed is
available for MS Win.

Or if you are use Gmail, you could just use a browser.

I don't think Eudora or MailWarrior are particularly usable -
or available - anymore.

Eudora is still available, but it only works on machines/OS up to loseXP.
Eudora for mac works on Rosetta, so it is limited to 10.6 or older OS.

One solution is to run XP on a VM and put Eudora on that VM. If this
machine ever craps out, that is my plan to keep using Eudora.

Another alternative is Postbox. I have not yet tried it but I will
some day evaluate it to see if it is good enough compared to Eudora.
Thunderchicken and the thunderchicken adaptation to be more like

Hmm. The "B" series Cummins is direct injection, so no glow
plugs. The 4BT is a rough running but strong engine. I
don't have much experience with the "B" series, but the old
Big Cam 14 L Cummins engines would start at 0F (-18 C)
without a block heater. Maybe the "B" series does as well?
Jim C. has a 6BT - he should know.

The 6BTA in my truck doesn't have glow plugs, true, but does
have a preheater grid in the intake manifold. I've never
tried starting without it, though I'm betting it would, if
under protest. That particular engine/truck is a 240D,
but with 2 more pistons and a turbo. (It has the P7100
mechanical inline pump.) Simple, strong, reliable.
Redline at 2500 RPM, half that of the MB diesels.

It's pushing 20 years old, and has 105kmi on it. Most of
that highway miles, much of it carrying a camper. I plan to
own it for quite awhile longer.

The 6BT in Dodge pickups in the 1990s had air heating grids in the intakes in
lieu of glow plugs.
I've started farm tractors with a 1500 W pistol grip hair dryer shoved in the
intake.

It would probably never happen. I think in order for me to move into that level
I would first have to go run a market like Dallas or Houston first.

Re: [MBZ] Hillarycare. was: Barum Tires

2016-02-04 Thread redghost--- via Mercedes
The cost sounds pretty high. How old are the applicants? Kids tend to cost a
bunch to service. Same as old folks. I pay $1800 per annum for 24/7 365
service.

Docs have a select number of clients so they can provide adequate care. The
healthy do cover the sicker clients. But the fee also covers all in house
testing in my case. My group has radiology, lab, cardiac, and all procedures
are on the house. No nickel and dime crap with billing, its covered. I need a
bone set and cast, on the house. I think they just purchased a MRI.

My doc used to be standard practice, then moved in house because he could not
afford the overhead of inso and paperwork employees. Now he can afford to
continue being a doctor and provides great service.

Wow. Looks sort of shady in a way.

>From what I could glean, you're expected or commit to pay a monthly amount

You are a recipient of said payments for your medical bills as well.

If I'm relatively healthy, I get screwed because I'm covering all the sick
people's bills. A family of three or more is expected to pay in nearly
$900/month. Ouch.

Go for it. I have been using this service for a decade and it rocks.

My group uses age based fee structure because old folks have more issues. You
still need normal coverage to deal with outside providers and hospital work.

The positive is that you get service really fast and there is no rush to
process you out of the room. My doc takes lots of time to talk things over,
discuss options fully, and knows my issues fully. Not getting passed around to
the bullpen. I call and get seen in 24 hours. He has full records of his work,
instead of having to interpret what some other medico performed.

[MBZ] OT Mac troubles fixed?

2016-02-04 Thread Rich Thomas via Mercedes
I *think* I finally have this imac working which is quite strange. About
a week ago I was trying to install OSX 10.6(.4) on the SSD, having
installed it on the HDD and then done a time machine backup. The thing
kept locking up on me. I thought I would try to install it on the SSD
and use that, see if the machine worked OK, i.e., rule out some hardware
issue and see if it was something to do with the install on the HDD and
TM backup reinstall.

I kinda forgot about and came back this aft and it was still on but
asleep (I forgot to turn it off) and stuck on the OSX install. I
rebooted and tried again, and it worked -- was actually pretty quick to
get OSX 10.6(.4) installed on the SSD which was encouraging. So it
rebooted and ran fine. I installed the extra apps, that went fine (you
have to tell the machine it is 2010 though) and pretty quick. I have
10.6.8 on a flash drive so went ahead and installed that, it was quick
too. Machine seems to work fine from the SSD now.

So, what the hell I rebooted from the HDD and that went fine. h. So
I figured I would try to do the 10.6.8 and that went fine. h.
Machine seems to be working fine. Very weird after all the issues I
had. I guess I will use it a bit and see if it continues to work. I
have no idea why all the sudden it just started working OK unless there
is some issue related to heat on the mobo or something, which was the
indication on the HDD when all the problems started. That HDD has been
running in an external box OK though.

In any case the new HDD is faster to boot and open apps, and the SSD is
really fast. Now I guess I need to do the swapping around to trick the
SSD as the boot drive and then all the other stuff on the HDD.
