What Rich said - - do it in a plastic bag so you don't lose the parts.
They're not that complex, just dirty inside.

Re: [MBZ] Rock Auto.com

2016-03-10 Thread clay via Mercedes
I used them to acquire a few things a number of years ago. Good pricing, but
it is essentially just a clearing house for the major parts distributors.
Product is product, and rather high quality if you know what you are shopping
for. If you get URO, it is garbage, but you knew that. They have good prices
on the OEM products. No access to OE parts. Meaning, the Lemforder part that
is used in your car, for example, is priced way below the highway robbery price
the stealership will charge for the exact same part, but with the magic star
not ground off.

THe radio dealies are something like 20-24 ga
steel about 7mm wide and maybe 4" long with a 90º

You can make your own with a tinsnips. If you
look at the area below the radidio, you will see
the 2 little slots these are stuck in to release
the radio.

[MBZ] crockauto

(C)rockauto has closeouts for Moog tierod ends. Should fit all MB
from postwar until 1992 at least.

Also belts for OM603

I snagged front brake pads for $5. too

Their promo:
We have a limited number of wholesaler closeout parts available for
your 2000 DODGE GRAND CARAVAN, 1986 MERCEDES-BENZ 300SDL and possibly
other vehicles you work on. Wholesaler closeout parts come from
manufacturers, retailers or distributors who, for whatever reason,
decided to reduce or liquidate inventory. We pay less for these parts
and can offer them to RockAuto customers at bargain prices. Some of
these products were discontinued by manufacturers and may be hard to
find after these closeout parts are sold. If you're planning for
future repairs or if you've postponed maintenance, now is a great
time to buy the parts you need!

The links below display the wholesaler closeout parts available for
your vehicles. Wholesaler closeout parts are also listed in the
RockAuto catalog alongside our regular inventory.

We regularly add new wholesaler closeout parts to the RockAuto

three of your vehicles, at most once every three months. To be

We are using El Crapitan on our older Intel Macs. Yes, you
lose Rosetta. I don't know if there's a VM game you can play
to get 10.6 back, or else you can dual-boot new/old OS's at
need.

Or set up a Rosetta server and use Screen Sharing to run
your stuff on the old machine from the newer one, when
you need to. That's how I'm doing e-mail, using 10.2.8 on
the same old machine I've used for years.

I am guessing the fix was in so teach could buy a new 'un.

IF there is an internal leak, a kit for a hyd cyl is pretty cheap. Or,
you can just let it leak back to the catches, and let the catches hold
the load. That is actually how it is SUPPOSED to be used. Lift, then
let off the hyd pressure so the catches hold the load.

It could be the valve is worn, so the fluid just leaks back into the
reservoir. That "fix" may only require a couple orings. I'd guess
this is more likely than an internal cylinder leak.

Re: [MBZ] lift

2016-03-10 Thread Curly McLain via Mercedes
Take a look at this lift and tell me what you think. It is at a
school and supposedly failed inspection and indicated in the
auction, but it looks to me like if it really did have leaks you
would see evidence of it and they say they have not seen any leaks.
Also the wear on the bar they are talking about does not look bad to
me. I am wondering if this might be a case of the "inspector"
failing it due to being overboard when in fact it is perfectly fine.
Plus after talking to seller it appears they are wanting to upgrade
their lift anyway so maybe thats the deal. I don't know. Does
anything in the photos stick out to you guys? I have a line on a
scissor lift as well but it looks like it have been left outside for
a long time.

I am guessing the fix was in so teach could buy a new 'un.

IF there is an internal leak, a kit for a hyd cyl is pretty cheap.
Or, you can just let it leak back to the catches, and let the catches
hold the load. That is actually how it is SUPPOSED to be used.
Lift, then let off the hyd pressure so the catches hold the load.

It could be the valve is worn, so the fluid just leaks back into the
reservoir. That "fix" may only require a couple orings. I'd guess
this is more likely than an internal cylinder leak.

used to be, I'll be taking my business there more from now on.

My FLAPS go-to is Advance Auto, because they have a store about five minutes
away that's a regional stock location, so they almost always have what I need
when other stores don't.

I always order online and pick up at the store, since that's the only way you
can get their promotional prices. I typically get between 30%-40% off their
prices with online coupons or promo codes. Retailmenot seems to be one of the
best for them.

Case in point: when I got the rebuilt alternator for the 350SDL the other night
I got 40% off using a promo code. Drove over there and picked it up 10 minutes
later.

[MBZ] lift

2016-03-10 Thread Kaleb C. Striplin via Mercedes
Take a look at this lift and tell me what you think. It is at a
school and supposedly failed inspection and indicated in the
auction, but it looks to me like if it really did have leaks you
would see evidence of it and they say they have not seen any
leaks. Also the wear on the bar they are talking about does not
look bad to me. I am wondering if this might be a case of the
"inspector" failing it due to being overboard when in fact it is
perfectly fine. Plus after talking to seller it appears they are
wanting to upgrade their lift anyway so maybe thats the deal. I
don't know. Does anything in the photos stick out to you guys? I
have a line on a scissor lift as well but it looks like it have
been left outside for a long time.

OK here is where I ordered it from last time, and last time I had a
discount code that brought it to about $10 per gallon

http://www.zoro.com/i/G2079122/

That code I had was expired so the best I have found is a $10 off
$150 or more purchase. So if you buy 11 of them you can use the code
and it will bring the total per unit to $13.66, with free shipping
and no tax.  A little better than the napa deal because you do not
have to pay tax.

code is MARCHDEAL

NAPA is a professional parts supplier that has a heck of a distribution system.
In most stores you can get a part from the warehouse the same day.

And the employees are car guys who typically know their stuff.

For what it's worth, the rebuilt alternator I got the other night was a
CarQuest brand.

Re: [MBZ] What's equivalent to MB Coolant (W123 300TD)?

2016-03-10 Thread Curt Raymond via Mercedes
Advance is acceptable to me if I know a part number they can look up. Otherwise
the employees there are too stupid to talk to. If it doesn't come right up in
the computer they have no idea. The exception is an Advance that used to be Car
Quest, they have much brighter employees because they do commercial business.
Sadly the hiring process from Advance has gone into the new stores so any new
employees are minimum wage morons. They also discontinued the old good Car
Quest branded stuff that I liked that was lower cost.
We've got Fisher which I think is a regional chain, they're more like Car Quest
used to be, I'll be taking my business there more from now on.

Drove over there and picked it up 10 minutes
later.

A lot of the auto parts stores are like that now. I got into it with a
guy at a store who wouldn't give me the on-line price though I tried to
order it and the web site showed the store didn't have it. I called and
they had it so went to get it with the print out... took him about 5
minutes to figure out the process to override his price in the computer
but he did, but he wasn't happy. I have no idea why, the product and

Thanks much. $9.99 is more like it. Napa is in Gaithersburg as well, not
too far from my tech. Their service was pretty awesome. I asked about the
calipers at 10:30 AM and they had them shipped to the store by 3:30, along
with the pads and hoses. Their rotors were too expensive at $56 ea. I got
a better deal from Advance Auto, ($20 less per side), which they delivered
directly to the shop.

***ACTUAL COST - $533.17***
Randy - $550
Kevin - 630
"Mountain Man" - 830

Congratulations to Randy for being just $16.83 above the actual total.
Curt finished second, $33.17 lower.

Randy, Winnipeg Customs will probably either confiscate/eat or collect 250%
duty on, a jar of artisanal jelly. I can still ship, or let me know a
designee (proxy?). I will need a physical address.

Thanks to all,

Andrew

Now $23.32/gallon at AutohausAZ - was half that price not too long ago!

Anyone know of a generic equivalent at a fraction of the cost? .

Genuine Mercedes -

* Latest version to comply with MBZ Approval 325.0 for all models, replaces

[MBZ] OT Mac performance/Chrome question

2016-03-10 Thread Curly McLain via Mercedes

Macbook 8.1 Core i5 2.3
8 Gb ram

10.6.8 (original installation)

I have been getting hangs regularly, particularly when using chrome.
(safari is pretty much useless now as we don't seem to be able to
update Safari without installing a newer OS.)

I use 10.6 because of Rosetta. So unless a Rosetta-like app can be
installed on the latest OS, I am resisting a newer OS.

This is complicated by the google announcement last week that 10.6,
through 10.9 are no longer supported. (NLS) The other mac, a
macbook 1.1 will soon be a problem again because of this, since it is
10.6 also. (thanks Dan)

I have been running Activity Monitor and it seems to indicate the
hangs are caused by multiple instances of "Google Chrome Helper"
hogging processor time. I just found one instance indicated at over
100% of processor time, as well as other software taking lesser
percentages of processor time. I am not sure how processor time can
total over 100%, because by definition percent can't go over 100%.
(except bakers percent which is not a percent, but a comparison to
flour content)

It appears to me that a lot of these hangs are associated with
a. video ads
b. Websites with so many ads it is difficult to find the content
c. Websites with Flash (which I have blocked)
d. Websites with embedded video that is set to start automatically.

I have clamxv installed as an antivirus and recently ran ccleaner
with no change.

The hangs also happen when chrome is not running, but I have not
caught what is hogging resources in those cases.

Questions:

Is there any way to control chrome to eliminate this problem?

Is there a possibility that there is a virus?

Any suggestions about what to do?

Is there a rosetta-like app that runs on 10.10 or 10.11?

Thanks

PS: I am thinking maybe it is time to convert these machines to
linux of some flavor. Apple/googs apparently don't want us around
anymore. That is a lot to learn that I'd rather not learn.

Too many idiots use TD to mean "turbodiesel". Most 300TDs on CL are NOT
wagons.
