In the UPS system it has to be shipped "HIGH VALUE". High value items get put
into special containers which are treated like gold, because I imagine
sometimes they are. High value insurance is not cheap, but if you have an item
that is irreplaceable, it is worth every penny.

Rick,
My wife has been packing and shipping antiques for almost 2 decades. The
problem is that during the holidays, temps get hired who aren't properly
trained or just don't care. Packages aren't handled as gently and respectfully
as they used to be. My wife foam, bubble wraps, double boxes with more peanuts,
etc. and stuff still gets broken. If someone drops a big box on a small box
containing a glass item, guess who wins. No amount of insurance or anything
else can prevent breakage. There are certain parts of the country where extra,
extra packing is required and then cross your fingers and hope for the best. In
our experience UPS is no better than USPS. But UPS is generally more expensive
than USPS.

No, I have not insulated it.

I have considered it but wondered if I would do more harm than good from
an energy point of view.
My basement is heated so not all that cold and the water coming in would
be cold, especially in winter, so if there is no water running through
the pipes, it has an opportunity to acclimatize to the temperature of
the basement before going into the HWT.
I had considered putting a big presure tank in the basement so it would
fill with cold water and warm somewhat before going into the HWT but
also wondered if that would just cool the basement enough to offset the
gain to the water.
I do intend to try that sort of thing out at the lake. I am going to run
the cold water from the pump (from the lake) into a pressure tank
outside in the sun during the day and then on into the cabin. My hope
is that it will supplement the small HWT we use out there. It probably
won't help in the morning but if one showers in the early evening, the
water in the outdoor tank should be quite a bit warmer than the water in
the lake (except perhaps in early spring or late fall).

Thinking to put some in. Could also be done between any hot water drain and

otherwise would be the case).

Karl
___

https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/3/37/Hot_water_heat_recycling_unit.jpg

I installed one like this a number of years ago.
It really only works with the shower. As the hot water runs down the
drain, it warms the cold water in the coils wrapped around the main
stack drain.
The maker recommended it for feeding the cold water in to the hot water
tank. They subsequently said it was slightly more efficient if it fed
the whole system so that it was warming all of the water feeding the
shower and not just the hot water side. I have thought about hooking the
drain line from the dishwasher into it too so that the hot water being
pumped out of the dishwasher would also warm the stack. Not sure how
well that might work given that I doubt the dishwasher is taking in new
hot water at the same time that it is pumping out the old water. Same
with the washing machine. Given the washer is in the basement, it would
require a pump to move the water up to the ceiling level so probably not
worth the effort to try to make that happen.
I have no idea whether it saves much energy. The primary theory was that
it made your hot water tank act as though it was a bigger tank so one
would not run out of hot water quite as quickly.

I have checked the temperatures in and out while someone is using the
shower and it certainly does boost the cold water temperature. I do not
recall exactly how much so I won't guess for the purposes of this post.
My recollection is that there is also a variance in terms of how well it
does depending on how cold the incoming water is. I suppose it might
also depend on how warm the person in the shower likes the water so my
guess in that regard might be a bit unscientific.

I think I paid something like $300 by the time I got it installed as I
bought end caps that converted it from copper to ABS and soldered them
on and then glued the assembly into the ABS main stack.

It has been there for years and is totally maintenance free so over
time, one would think it should earn back the cost.

gallons of water for an hour or so with 4-5lb of dark raw sugar. Put it
in the fermenter with some champagne yeast for about 10 days then put it
in some 1L soda bottles and left it sit for 2 weeks.

Tasted it and it had a little bit of fizz but no sweetness -- I guess
all the sugar had been fermented. It tasted kinda like a ginger wine,
was good with a very good ginger punch. Not bad but no sweetness. I
made some dark n' stormies with about 1/2L out of a bottle and a bit of
simple syrup, then added some simple syrup to that bottle, it has sat
for a week and fizzed up a bit more but is sweeter now, more like a
ginger ale/beer.

Made a cocktail tonight with some Goslings and my sweeter fizzier ginger
brew and WOW is it good. I think the ginger brew has a pretty good
ethanol level now too. I gave 3L away and have 9L more, so need to work
on it! More Goslings needed!

OOOPS my cocktail is gone, buhbah

If you want to ship something, and you don't want it lost or broken,

1. Package it WELL!

2. Include another shipping label IN the package.

3. Insure it as a "HIGH VALUE" package.

Re: [MBZ] W123 300TD Starts and stalls

2016-04-08 Thread MG via Mercedes
The cheapest thing in my experience that might improve things is
the Diesel Purge. Turning the idle speed up is a solution which
will work while the engine is cold and then cause the engine to
run too fast at warm idle. So if the Diesel Purge doesn't work
then my advice is to use your foot to keep it running when cold
and leave the idle where it is as long as it is fast enough to be
correct when warm or get the pump rebuilt. The springs in the
pumps get older and weaker and need replacement or adjustment.
Only a rebuild will give you that like new performance. If you
don't want to pay for that then you have to decide what you want
to do and put up with the possibly less then optimal result.

This is all part of the speed governing system and is adjusted when the
pump is being set up on the injection bench. This governing system should
work not only when the engine is cold but also should work to increase or
decrease the injection amount in response to load on the engine at idle to
keep the idle speed at the externally set speed at all times. As the pump
ages and gunk builds up internally this adjustment may not work as well as
it should. It's possible that doing the diesel purge cleaning will fix it
but the real fix is to rebuild the pump at which time all those internal
adjustments will or should be reset to the correct specs.

For those who have a car with the 617 engine you may have noticed the
slight increase of idle speed followed by a reduction of that speed as the
engine warms up after a cold start in the morning. I have noticed this
often and it may happen several times if you let the car sit there and warm
up. That is not to say that you should do this or even that it is good for
the engine but it will happen if you get a chance to try this. That said I
also have a couple of cars in which I have noticed the same problem as
Andrew has with his. Those cars also will not increase the idle when the AC
compressor turns on. Does it bother me? Yeah, a little bit but not enough
to do anything about it right now.

The 617 does not have any sort of fuel enrichment or idle up feature
which I believe the 60x does have some sort of fuel enrichment. Maybe his

It's sad when we ship a one of a kind something that's 100+ years old and it
gets broken. UPS or USPS says it's insured so you can replace it. I always want
to ask them where they can get replacements. Dealing in new and antique items
gives you an appreciation for the workmanship of the "old stuff". There are
very few companies that still make items that remotely compare in quality and
workmanship to the old stuff.
So, I will never hurl anything that's priceless or remotely close to priceless.

Thinking to put some in. Could also be done between any hot water drain and

Oh well, it was $7.11/liter this morning.

I've have great luck with this fluid over the years, especially with boxes

Max is spot on.

We used one of these on the former 1995 S500 coupe, which had a steering wheel
that gave real insight into both the age and wear on the car. It took a couple
of hours to do and do right, but the results were well worth it. If you didn't
know, the wheel appeared as new.

Of course, it's not mine either. It's just that hooking up disposer will
significantly change the drain configuration under the sink. 'Was merely
trying to insert a reminder that a disposer may provide a port that may help
simplify the new drain setup.

Wilton,
I know the disposal is designed with the option to tie in the DW, but
unless you feel some strong need, I would not. Again, my disposal is now
17 years old and going strong...separate from the DW. And the MayTag DW is
plumbed before the trap. I still think Kaleb's problem is more the
plumbing sequence than the DW. But I also know that new Bosch DW is
"burning a whole in his pocket" and he'll want to install it to keep up
with Dan. Whatever makes everyone happy. Again, it's your money and not
mine.

Good luck and best wishes,

Re: [MBZ] hot water heat exchangers WAS Yet even more dishwasher talk

2016-04-08 Thread Curt Raymond via Mercedes
6 of one, half dozen of the other. Depends on if its cheaper to heat water or
heat the basement.
At camp when we're going to shower I pull a couple buckets of water from the
pond and let them warm up on the porch or inside the camp. The pond is spring
fed and the water never really gets much above 50F. Letting it preheat means we
use much less propane in the shower.

I do not

It has been there for years and is totally maintenance free so over

the whole system so that it was warming all of the water feeding the
shower and not just the hot water side.

I installed one like this a number of years ago.
It really only works with the shower. As the hot water runs down the
drain, it warms the cold water in the coils wrapped around the main
stack drain.

tank. They subsequently said it was slightly more efficient if it fed
the whole system so that it was warming all of the water feeding the

Solar hot water is in my 10 year plan, my aunt and uncle got it and can't say
enough good things. Payback on solar hot water is usually quoted in the 5-7
year range.
Before we get there we need a new roof and furnace, roof will be this year,
maybe the furnace next year and solar hot water the next or maybe I'll take a
note and do both of those at the same time which might save some money.

then keep the maytag to replace the lower end kitchenaid in my rent house.

2016-04-08 Thread Andrew Strasfogel via Mercedes
It bothered me enough to cast a lifeline.

The cheapest fixes are, in no particular order:

1) check and replace prefuel filter ($2.50)

2) replace main fuel filter ($7.50)

3) adjust IP adjustment fitting to increase idle speed using crow's foot
plus extension rod, and

4) run a can of Diesel Purge ($9.50),

5) rebuild the injection pump ($1500 or ??).

I will sell the car before trying number 5.

any of that booster stuff I used the other day after running the cleaner thru

anything clean without some sort of booster added. Maybe the Bosch I have not

Anybody rig up a heat exchanger between the drain water and cold water
supply of a shower? They are not too hard to fabricate from copper pipe.
Thinking to put some in. Could also be done between any hot water drain and
the inlet to hot water heater I suppose. Just thinking to save some energy
over the life of the plumbing (and not run out of hot water as fast as
otherwise would be the case).

Re: [MBZ] Mercedes Digest, Vol 125, Issue 48

2016-04-08 Thread MG via Mercedes
While there is no cold idle enrichment, there is an idle speed
control inside the pump which, in conjunction with the external
user adjustable idle speed setting, should keep the engine idling
at the correct speed. This is all part of the speed governing
system and is adjusted when the pump is being set up on the
injection bench. This governing system should work not only when
the engine is cold but also should work to increase or decrease
the injection amount in response to load on the engine at idle to
keep the idle speed at the externally set speed at all times. As
the pump ages and gunk builds up internally this adjustment may
not work as well as it should. It's possible that doing the
diesel purge cleaning will fix it but the real fix is to rebuild
the pump at which time all those internal adjustments will or
should be reset to the correct specs.

For those who have a car with the 617 engine you may have noticed
the slight increase of idle speed followed by a reduction of that
speed as the engine warms up after a cold start in the morning. I
have noticed this often and it may happen several times if you
let the car sit there and warm up. That is not to say that you
should do this or even that it is good for the engine but it will
happen if you get a chance to try this. That said I also have a
couple of cars in which I have noticed the same problem as Andrew
has with his. Those cars also will not increase the idle when the
AC compressor turns on. Does it bother me? Yeah, a little bit but
not enough to do anything about it right now.

The 617 does not have any sort of fuel enrichment or idle up feature which I
believe the 60x does have some sort of fuel enrichment. Maybe his idle is just
set too low to begin with.
