Ok, I put El Crap (OS 10.11) on an external HD, then loaded Postbox

(at least on a mac)  the winders version will probably work on 
m$outLOOK.


So accessing my archives will be difficult, but everything else will 
probably make the trip to 10.11 with migration manager or file 
copying.

along with this i5.

[MBZ] Next Mac Q

if I get el crap (and postbox)  working as desired on the external 
USB drive, I would assume at some point I can take that drive out of 
the case and put it in the MBP, then take the 10.6.8 drive out of the 
MBP and put it in the case, and everything should work.  Anyone BTDT?


Will that work or do I need to back up both on time mosheen, then 
restore each in the new place after the swap is made?


TIA  The adventure begins.

Poor old Eudora Welty will fade into Oblivion..

You need a sedan interior?  It really is nice, burl wood.  I think the wood is 
all in great shape, buy I didn't really have time to look at it.

Plan is to remove it all, if nobody on the list can use it, I'll start 
advertising later this fall on Craig's list, MB forums, etc.

It was great to see you again Wilton, wish it could have been under different 
circumstances.  Really a shame that such a nice car was taken out by that 
distracted driver.  Rich and I were looking under the hood, briefly considered 
trying to bring your sedan back to life, but the damage really is quite severe.

By the way, we had to cut the hood latch with a saw-z-all, I have no idea how 
that tow truck driver got that hood closed.  We both tried with pry bars, could 
not open that hood with brute force.

Same here.  Keepass is big enough that it makes the news when there is a
problem, but doesn't have any of the extra risks associated with an online
account.  Also, the Keepass2Android application is the bee's knees - it has
an integrated keyboard to avoid clipboard sniffing, among other nice
features.

12 years ago at 82 kmi; owned by couple in historic area of Salem - as in 
Winston-Salem, NC.  (Had been driven about 4.5 kmi per year by "little old 
woman.)  'Had spent most of its calendar life sitting in darkened garage and 
was in absolutely showroom condition.  Spent the last 12 years at my house, 
though, sitting outside under oak trees.  As my "condition" has worsened, 
I've become less able to care for the finish like I wanted.

Doesn't even have to be fast, but there will have to be some
residual magnetize for it to work 'cause the field is an
electromagnet.  And it's pretty tricky to connect a drill to a
starter - ignoring that it's kinda pointless if you do that
_after_ connecting it to a battery. *smiles*

[MBZ] F#$@ Frontier

Consumer protection folks at the State of Florida are after Frontier big time 
and asking for any and all complaints about their recent acquisition of 
Verizon’s FIOS services in our area.

I just filed a complaint over billing practices.  They have moved my billing 
date around twice, both times moving it so that I’m paying a full month’s 
amount for like 20-22 days of service.

The Secretary of State called their CEO last week and gave him a public 
shellacking.  Frontier wasn’t the least bit apologetic until the SoS started 
talking about fines.  Suddenly they’re all about customer service…

Shouldn't a starter function as a generator if you spin it fast enough? If
it works as a generator, there's a good chance (electrically at least) that
it will turn under external power? That's what I thought Gerry was talking
about - until I got to the regulator :-)

I like the new car. Black is hot and hard to keep clean but sure looks 
nice when it is clean. The tan interior beats black too.

Not really.

Or sort of.

You can use jumper cables to connect it to a battery and see
if the solenoid kicks the bendix drive out and if the motor
spins.  (hold it tight while you do this, it jumps a bit as
it fires up.  I usually stand on it on the ground)

But I know of no way to test if it's going to require
thumping the solenoid to get the car started, or if it's worn
enough it drags when hot, or if the bendix will always
engage.  And I tried.  Again and again.  

In the last year or so, I've monkeyed with parts an pieces
from about 5 starter trying to get a dependable working on.
And none of the out-of-the-car testing I could device was of
any real value beyond determining it spins, the solenoid
operates, and there isn't a field winding shorted to the case
(very easy to do)

I got really good at changing the starter on a OM616...

I put them in a big vise, hook them up to a battery, attach a voltmeter, and 
spin them with a drill or impact wrench and a socket. It catches the weak ones 
as well as the bad ones.
A new regulator usually brings the volts up to normal. If not, it's probably 
the windings.

which was what I really wanted. That was maybe 4 years ago though.
I was under the impression boot camp was the magic that made other OSs

You may not have used a Mac since the switch to Intel then, I have had both 
Windows and Red Hat Linux running on a Mac Mini without any OS X install on the 
disk at all. Although, I will say that since the Intel Macs all use EFI and not 
Legacy BIOS, you have to be very sure the OS you are trying to install is 
*fully* EFI compliant. Most versions of Windows before 7 force EFI to act like 
Legacy BIOS, thus don't work very will on Mac hardware without Boot Camp to 
help. 7, 8 and 10, however, do EFI and GPT so don't need OS X at all.
Linux is even more hit or miss because most of the "Live CD" distros that also 
offer the recovery tools all want Legacy BIOS as well. So getting those to boot 
straight has interesting characteristics. However, a modern Mac is modern Intel 
(x64, EFI, GPT) and will boot and run anything that meets those requirements.

Last night I finally got the Disk Utility to make what was supposed
to be a bootable USB with the El Crapitan installer on it.  It was
not recognized as bootable when booting with the option key.

I also tried, before that, making a format with GParteD linux disk
utility, them marking it has bootable.  Same thing.  Not recognized
as bootable.

I wish they'd give us the installer as 2 .iso or .dmg disk images
that could be put on two dvds.

You can run it with jumper cables from a battery - either in the garage, or
the one in your car. Keep a foot on it - the case will try to rotate in the
opposite direction of the armature. Don't run it very long, it has no load
and will turn faster than expected.

I recently retired a Mac Pro 1,1 that was run with the EFI hack for 2-3 years 
quite successfully. It would run rings around newer Macs.  With upgraded 
processors, plenty of RAM and an ATI 1GB 5700 it was a smokin' machine that I 
had maybe $600 in all total.

I moved up to a Mac Prom3,1 late last year. I sold the 1,1 for $300 on CL, paid 
$350 for the 3,1 with the stock dual processors, Apple RAID card with four 
400GB 15k drives and added a 480GB SSD for a boot drive ($125) and 32GB of RAM 
for ($75).  I kept the ATI card from the 1,1.

For $250 I got another smokin' hot machine that runs current OS' and doesn't 
need the EFI hack.

The Intel Mac Pros (cheese graters) are one of the best values out there for 
Macs, I think.

need a non-stock video card.  My brother's 1,1 had run Crap
in a test, and the 2,1 I'm typing from now is running it.
I believe all Mac Pros will take at least 16GB of ECC RAM,
so Crap is plenty happy there.  (The 1,1 had 16GB in it,
this 2,1 has 24GB.  4GB's probably enough to run it well.)

He paid $150 for his, w/23" Cinema monitor, keyboard, mouse,
and we had about another $100 in it in RAM and disks.  We were
a video card away from being done upgrading it when fire took it.
Probably $50 with some careful shopping, and it'd been good
for at least five more years of service.

The Unigine demos are impressive on them.

Well, the PowerMac G5 was 64-bit, but it was a "Pro" marketed machine, and
the only one. The rest of the PowerMac line up was 32-bit. When they moved
to Intel, the Mac Pro 1,1 used 64 bit Xeons so was comparable to the
PowerMac G5. Since the "consumer" Mac was 32-bit, there really wasn't a
"regression" per se. The real problem is the original EFI was 32-bit, and
the main reason there is such a harsh cut off on some of the older hardware
that should still run the modern OS X, 32-bit EFI meant a limitation in
Memory addressing. I have a 32/64 Mac Mini that can only address 3 GB of
RAM. The processor can do 64-bit, and I have run 64 bit Red Hat on it, but
it will not address larger memory.

You may not have used a Mac since the switch to Intel then, I have had both
Windows and Red Hat Linux running on a Mac Mini without any OS X install on
the disk at all. Although, I will say that since the Intel Macs all use EFI
and not Legacy BIOS, you have to be very sure the OS you are trying to
install is *fully* EFI compliant. Most versions of Windows before 7 force
EFI to act like Legacy BIOS, thus don't work very will on Mac hardware
without Boot Camp to help. 7, 8 and 10, however, do EFI and GPT so don't
need OS X at all.

Linux is even more hit or miss because most of the "Live CD" distros that
also offer the recovery tools all want Legacy BIOS as well. So getting
those to boot straight has interesting characteristics. However, a modern
Mac is modern Intel (x64, EFI, GPT) and will boot and run anything that
meets those requirements.

I use one heavily.  Too many systems and logins and other
such data for my brain to keep up.

Sorry, can't help with Win10, unless there is a port of the
linux program Gringotts.  

There are a couple approaches to the concept.  I do NOT use
the automagic style that integrates with a browser and stores
and sends passwords.  Gringotts is really just a super secure
place to make notes.  That means there are not fields to fill
in - and it means I can put in there any data I want.  Names,
passwords, account numbers, VIN, etc.
