[MBZ] goodyear = Bad Day

2016-05-21 Thread Curley McLain via Mercedes
I have had nothing but bad from goodyear tires. The one exception was
the ones that came with the quantum. those never slipped belts and held
the road reasonably well. Several of the problems were rubber that is
either made too hard or ages to become too hard and does not grip the
road. This afternoon, i was supposed to attend lunch 60 miles away to
celebrate #1 Daughter's engagement. I was almost there when i looked up
at a street sign to try to figure out if it was where I should turn. in
that instant, the traffic ahead stopped. I should have had enough time
to get stopped, but the the crappy badyears just slid across the
pavement. This was to be the last time I drove the POSitive before it
got new rubber. Well, it was the last time I will drive the POS. Very
low speed hit, but the hood, grill one light and one fender are bent.
The other 300D (identical car) would have easily stopped in half the
distance. (Cooper CS3 tires.) POS will cost too much to repair.
Anyone need a 100k mile OM603 and transmission? I will be selling parts
in the fall. If I read the tire date code correctly, the tires were
made in 06, but had decent tread and were not weather checked.

I violated my own first rule of insurance. The cheapest insurance is
good sticky tires.

Be warned.

Balls from the vacuum pump in the sprocket, jerking the chain, busting
the cam sprocket, but normally the cam breaks and the sprocket survices.

Valve hitting a piston?

Seized camshaft?

Man, that looks nasty. Looks like you might need a complete head with
a cam. Rather catastrophic and not a good day for that engine.

Check the vacuum pump, if it sheds chunks it usually breaks the chain,
but if the cam gear was bad, a suddenly locked chain could fracture it.

Knocking before failure sounds more like a cracked camshaft sprocket
though.

I don't think this is a common failure

Well there was something going on leading up to the failed that the PO nor the
show was able to observe and figure out, instead they replaced a couple of
injectors. The owner continued driving it until it quit completely.

I have a complete #20 head with camshaft etc ready to go if needed. Need to get
it in the shop and further tear it down to figure out that root cause

Obviously further tear down is required to establish the failure path..

"Something" caused the cam to stop while the engine was under power..
certainly.. I can not conceive the cam gear simply "failed on it's own"
from fatigue.

More pictures as it comes apart please.. you have my interest here..

Re: [MBZ] NC mini Q

2016-05-21 Thread Karl Wittnebel via Mercedes
What Dan said. It uses vacuum from the pump, turbo boost and throttle
position to modulate the vacuum signal to the transmission, and thereby
soften shifts when the motor is not making full power/torque. Having it at
full pressure all the time makes for ugly clunk on the 3-2 downshift, for
instance, or when shifting to reverse from forward gears. And they have
been NLA for years, but almost never failed.

I rank this with reclining rear seats. A nice option if you can get it, but
since it’s unlikely I’ll ever be riding in the back a waste (to me.) And it
doesn't make a lot of sense considering the price. Ouch.

These are very cool.

At work we had a bunch pulled from 221s and 222s. We remove them because
of the impact on trunk space, but I'm always looking to keep them in for
ice cream transport.
