They often stick and get stretched when you unscrew the back. A very
light coating of silicone grease helps the gasket stay in the slot
while you screw the back down.

I have a Seiko I have never gotten to seal well, grease or not.

[MBZ] RIP Jerry O'Keefe WWII Ace, USMC

2016-08-23 Thread Curley McLain via Mercedes

Biloxi lost a great one, America lost a hero

"We've lost a great Biloxian, someone who did so much for this community
in so many ways, and the country has lost an American hero," Mayor
Andrew "FoFo" Gilich says of the passing of former Mayor Jeremiah J.
"Jerry" O'Keefe.

O'Keefe, the country's youngest World War II flying ace, former state
legislator, two-term Biloxi mayor, well-known businessman and
philanthropist, died last night shortly before 3 a.m. Mayor Gilich
ordered flags at Biloxi municipal facilities lowered to half staff to
mark the passing.

"Jerry O'Keefe was one of the last of America's Greatest Generation,"
said Gilich, who as a youngster delivered groceries from the grocery
store to the O'Keefe home, which was at the site of the present-day
Doubletree, at Hopkins Boulevard and U.S. 90. A young "FoFo" Gilich also
served as a page to O'Keefe in the state legislature.

"I've been close to the O'Keefe family all of my life," the mayor said,
"and today I'm gaining more and more appreciation for Jerry O'Keefe's
eight years as mayor.

"We can take great comfort in the fact that we were all able to share in
Jerry's life, to benefit from his service to country and community.
Today our thoughts and prayers are with his family. Jerry was a big part
of the fabric of our community, and it's comforting to know that he has
such a large family to carry on the O'Keefe legacy."

From the Biloxi website (Keesler AFB)

O'Keefe was the youngest WWII Ace, shooting down 5 planes on one tank of
fuel in April, 1945 over Okinawa. Pretty good ROI that day!

[MBZ] The next work

2016-08-23 Thread Curley McLain via Mercedes
The 240D "tex" is doing well with its new muffler, but I am afraid I
will have to make another "car payment" this month. I ordered new
engine and trans mounts, (already has a new diff mount) and I found a
place that sells a kit for the transfer pump, so it will get a rebuilt
transfer pump and new priming pump. Parts coming from 3 different
places. (I sure miss Rusty as a single source)

BTW, crock auto has a "kit" for the Bosal exhaust for a good price.
They boxed the two pieces I bought from them.

2016-08-23 Thread Meade Dillon via Mercedes
I think I'd rather get a new o-ring at this point. I was able to get the
old gasket to fit, watched a youtube video. Lay gasket on back of watch,
put back in place and start screwing it down, push gasket under back while
gradually tightening the back and it will all go back into the seat.

Looks like the gasket is 35.2mm inside diameter, 0.8mm thick (measuring the
seat).

Had geico. They paid for a new factory rear door for my 85 wagon after it
got hit while parked. Last door from germany.

Usaa is cheaper but they repaired my car with used parts recently. Insure
everything through them now.

You can add people as joint account holders to a new account. Anyone that
needs account access with you. They are assigned a number etc. Fyi.

How much are people paying for steel roofs and is there a choice of gauge?

[MBZ] OT watch repair help!

2016-08-23 Thread Meade Dillon via Mercedes
I've opened up a watch to replace the battery, but now the o-ring for the
back is too big and it won't fit back into the seat? What's going on?

Watch is a Victorinox 241316, water resistant to 100 meters (or at least it
was before I opened it up...)

Do I need to order a new o-ring to go with the new battery? Put the old
o-ring in the freezer to shrink back down so it fits?

Consumers Reports has given USAA the top rating for years. CR is pretty
accurate about their ratings that are based on reader surveys; not alway
accurate on their own testing of products, however.

I don't think USAA insures anyone but active and retired military.

About the same for the Prius and the 240D.
For hurricane damage (rare here in the hills) I pay first $5000.

I've had American Family for house and cars, for over 40 years. We got
screwed a couple years ago when the neighbors tree fell on our garage.
But it was not a big enough deal to make a big fight over. Other than
that, they have been good and very competitive prices. But no big
claims except the fire. A few hail claims and such, but nothing big.
For the building that was set on fire, they paid a fair repair cost,
about half what I paid for the building. The big loss was the
contents, which were not insured.

If I could get USAA, i'd look into that, but I have to go back 4
generations or so for military service. My daughter could join the
Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR), but I can't get USAA. I had
2 uncles in WWII, but other than that, I have to go back to the War of
1812 and the American Revolution. I don't think USAA counts any of
that. My Paternal grandmother's side came from pacifist stock. The
first gen. had his friends coop him in a barrel and ship the barrel to
'merika. Once the ship was underway, he got out, but was discovered,
and the Captain was going to throw him overboard. Another traveller
offered to pay his passage if he would agree to work for 7 years as an
indentured servant. So he survived as an indentured servant. He
didn't want to get conscripted into whatever army was controlling the
Rhineland of Germany at that time. (Bavaria? or maybe that was
later?) The other side left the Rhineland (controlled by Bavaria)
because they were caught between the Protestant army and the Archbishop
of Worms army. Apparently some family members were caught by the
Archie's guys and burned at the stake. When they got to the US of A
about 185 years ago, they didn't have much appetite to join up either.
My dad was deemed too important to the war effort to be drafted.

We have Arbella for auto, just got our bill for this year, $1400 for the Golf
and Jetta with liability and the Dodge has comprehensive or whatever is
required because of the loan. Its still worth probably $15k so its worth
keeping more insurance on, for a $1500 car no way. Angie has 1 point off her

What company/companies do you all use for car insurance and are you happy with
them?  Do you have the same company for Home and Auto?

I feel like I pay WAY too much for insurance between car and house.  But, I
know part of my problem is living in Kansas and having to deal with hail claims
(mostly on the house).

Another issue about homeowners insurance bugs the crap out of me.  My insurance
company (Farmer's) requires me to insure my house for the reconstruction cost.
That is okay except the reconstruction cost is more than double the market
value.  I know market value is not the same and if I had some huge claim, I
would want them to spend as much as it took to repair it. But,  the difference
between the two is huge!

Thats interesting, I want to put a metal roof on our house, I read that you get
80% of the price of the house back when you sell but I'd forgotten that there
can be insurance implications. I'd read that fire insurance goes down with a
metal roof too.

We have State Farm for both, and have had since 1978. The few claims I've
had have been handled well and quickly, with one exception. I was stopped
at a red light and was rear-ended. Even though the other driver's insurance
paid to repair my car (1974 Saab Sonnett), State Farm raised my premium for
a year or two. We almost switched them, but lethargy overcame the outrage.

The steel roof on our house did reduce the house premium by 10 - 15% (we
also live in hail country). They've paid for roofs three times and covered
a rusted out 1970 220D for hail damage at more than the car was worth. I've
only had that one complaint, otherwise we are happy customers. YMMV

Curley and I were having a discussion about certain insurance companies
and it got me thinking.

What company/companies do you all use for car insurance and are you happy
with them? Do you have the same company for Home and Auto?

I feel like I pay WAY too much for insurance between car and house. But,
I know part of my problem is living in Kansas and having to deal with hail
claims (mostly on the house).

Another issue about homeowners insurance bugs the crap out of me. My
insurance company (Farmer's) requires me to insure my house for the
reconstruction cost. That is okay except the reconstruction cost is more
than double the market value. I know market value is not the same and if
I had some huge claim, I would want them to spend as much as it took to
repair it. But, the difference between the two is huge!

Re: [MBZ] OT: insurance

2016-08-23 Thread Max Dillon via Mercedes
USAA, for everything, including a term life policy. I also think our home
owners rate is high, but we live in hurricane country. Their customer service
is excellent, and I've got no worries about their long-term viability.

We've had several auto claims, I collected a rash of speeding tickets a few
years ago, but I've never shopped around to see if we'd get a better deal
elsewhere. Ignorance is bliss? I did shop around for the term life, and USAA
was far and away the best deal.

I know that ten or so years ago, folks around here suffered a huge premium jump
for home owners due to Katrina and Florida, some even lost coverage entirely
and had to move to another insco with a big jump in cost, but my increase was
very modest. I've also got lots of flexibility picking my deductible, I think
the maximum is $10k.

Re: [MBZ] OT: insurance

2016-08-23 Thread OK Don via Mercedes

YMMV

I read that the airlines are stealing pilots from the AF with higher pay
and fewer bullets to dodge. Don't know about the mechanics, though Tinker
AFB is hiring as many as the local A school can churn out. They have the
capability at Tinker to build from scratch almost any part they need, so I
think they are in-sourcing parts as well as maintenance.

[MBZ] Ironhead fuel transfer pump rebuild

2016-08-23 Thread Curley McLain via Mercedes
I just got through rebuilding a fuel transfer pump for a 240D. There
are a couple of tricks, but it is not too difficult. the IN side valve
looked chewed up on the sealing surface. That would probably do it.

If anyone wants me to rebuild one, I can do it for $45, including the
return shipping.

I am waiting for the new primer pump. that adds about $20 to the cost,
and it takes longer for the primer pump to get here.

Also, given that rather bad issue, how is the rest of the car? Is the

State Farm gave you more than you expected? You must have gotten someone on a
good day. State Farm is so big that whenever I have to deal with insurance
companies I hate dealing with State Farm! Usually their attitude is take it or
leave it and if you don't like it, then sue us.

Insurance told me Friday my CLK is totaled. Duh. While talking with the claims
dude, a guy who said he's been doing this for 25 years, he told me that in that
length of time he has seen 57 instances of where a Mercedes has clearly saved
someone's life.
Another data point.
On the other hand, the insurance company was very generous and gave me about
$3,000 more than I thought I would get for it. They noticed that the tires were
nearly brand-new. They asked me which type of service I most recently had done
and when did I have it done. It was very refreshing to deal with people that do
their job well. Well done State Farm, well done

Not worth it? Does it have other running problems? A 95 E300 diesel with
the other issues repaired and its time for salvage? It seems like it would be
worth it to fix this with all the other issues fixed. Is it a turd otherwise?
I like the 124 diesels!

I useta wonder if the chinee homeland would be renamed waltonland or if
we'd be overrun by the chinee. Turns out the waltons were not
agressive enough, and that option is OUT. Now, between Vland and
chinee, I'd rather deal with chinee. But the real choice is if we will
be shree ya or make a deal with the chinee. In that case, I will
choose the chinee option. Vlad won't come here. He has his own
problems with shree ya.

Installation of a K filter in the 140 takes that car out of the running.
If the owner is so dumb that he thinks that is a selling point, there's no
telling what other stupidity he's inflicted on it. Diesel Secret Energy?
WVO "free fuel"? On the other hand, you could use that against him and
beat him down on the price?
