Katrina's devastation in Mississippi (and Alabama) got relatively little
coverage in the mainstream media. Maybe the reporters didn't want to "rough
it" or maybe the editors didn't consider Alabama important.
Maybe this clip (before and after shots) will help visualize that reality:

I remember when a hurricane hit Biloxi during the late 1940s or early 1950s. It
washed out nearly all of the beach sand and the state/federal government was
slow about pumping it back in.
The Florida beaches near St. Pete and Tampa hoped to get the vacationers who
usually went to Biloxi, but few showed up. I don't remember if Biloxi got hit
again between then and now.

Re: [MBZ] Wind and Weather Patterns

2016-09-14 Thread Mitch Haley via Mercedes
Had a drought for 2-3 months here in Michigan, then about 15" of rain in August,
went from mowing the lawn once a month whether it needed it or not to mowing
every five days and being besieged by mosquitoes. The skeeter-free summer was
fun while it lasted, but now I can't stand being outside with them after getting
used to them not existing.

It's hard to complain about 15" of rain in a month when somebody else gets 30"
in a day.

Hmm, that was supposed to be NOLA mayor not May...

All of coastal MS was devastated. Bay St. Louis, Pass Christian, Long Beach,
Gulfport, Biloxi, Ocean Springs all were hit hard. Bay, Pass and Biloxi got
it the worst. Most of the beachfront for 1/2 mile north of Hwy 90 were wiped
out. The next half mile was heavily damaged. In many cases that was up to the
railroad. From the railroad to I-10 was tree damage, most roofs gone, but
mostly structurally intact. N of I-10 was wind, tree and flooding damage.

#1 Daughter's house survived, but it is back about a mile and a few feet higher
than the water came. There were many trees down, one south window and 1 door
broken out, and the roof was gone. Like her great grandpappy and great Great
Great Grandpappy, she bought high ground.

I saw what was left of one casino barge resting inside what had been a 3 story
motel. That was most amazing.

It's an interesting website. For example, currently it shows (probably
a low speed) "cyclone" on the east coast at the border between Georgia
and South Carolina; which are obviously caused by wind from several
directions.
The website also shows other aspects of moving weather patterns which
are easier to understand than the usual static weather bureau notation.

Hi Russ,

Glad you are ok. Was it mostly north of you or were you just high
enough to escape direct damage?

I am so glad this time the Cajun Navy went to work, unlike last time
when the NOLA may sat on his hands and did nothing but complain. This
country (as you know) was made great buy citizens banding together to do
what needs done. That is exactly what the Cajun Navy is. If I'd been
along the gulf coast, I'd have been there to join the navy.

Re: [MBZ] 2007 Ford Expedition EL

2016-09-14 Thread Ed Booher via Mercedes
The Expedition is a Ford F-150 Wagon, so all quirks and provisos that apply
to the F-150 of that year also apply to the Expedition. That being said,
there is a reason that the Ford F-150 has been the number one truck in
America for ... decades really. Regular maintenance to an F-150 /
Expedition means it runs a long time. They are strong, able, and versatile.

But, as Rick says, things like the Spark Plug removal is an issue. However,
my wife drives a Durango with a Hemi. 2 plugs per cylinder, so 16 plugs
overall, that things is ridiculous so it is a problem, but there are worse.
Just don't leave the plugs in for 100K miles, no matter what the plug
manufacturer or Ford might tell you.

Looks like a GD I saw posted in Indianapolis. Nice, too good to be
true. Utah plates seems nice. Pictures look to be from UT, not FL?
Otherwise, yes - Kleb needs this. Or, Grant could use this to travel
his vast estate to get from his bedroom to the mailbox?

Plenty of room. nuthin in OK but a few oel wells, and a couple rows of
old MBs. All ya need is somethin that can land in a field. Stearmans,
Spitfires, Hurricanes and DC3 all did that well.

Did you see the episode where Clarkson brings home a jet fighter on a
flatbed and drops it in his front yard? Mama was not particularly
amused, but seemed used to his, um, eccentricities.

I would do that with a MiG, put it out by the road. There is this woman
Annie Caroline who lives here on this island, whose husband was a pilot
of some sort at some time in his life, maybe retired airline or
something. I think he died a few years ago and she moved into town
maybe, she had a horse farm/stable/boarding place. She is pretty
whack. Anyway I went over to their house one day for something, it's
back in the woods off the road pretty far, there was a D-18 on a
pedestal at their front gate. I so wanted that thing... it was totally
awesome.

I can appreciate the added value of service records and we all know a cheap MB

My friend is trying to unload a 1994 TE. Always serviced by my mechanic. Just
got a good detailing, so it looks nice. Glass is good, AC works, third row
seats, I saw no rips or tears, all lights complete with no damage. wagon has
210k miles with some minor clear coat wear (probably will buff out if Martha
did it). Graphite black, not 040 color with black interior. The pop up part
of sunroof is wonky, the antenna does not behave, has an aftermarket CD player.

He is selling this one because he has another, but it is green and his wife
likes the green car more than the black one.

He would be happy to let it go FAST for $3600

Re: [MBZ] 2007 Ford Expedition EL

2016-09-14 Thread Donald Snook via Mercedes
You are right. By comparison to the Excursion, the Expedition and even the
Suburban are practically reasonable.

I think there is a business opportunity for someone with the money and time to
dedicate to it. There is a huge market for the Excursion. There is a serious
loyal fanbase. The folks who want them pay a premium price because they are so
heavy duty. When my stepdaughter was into horses and competed at events, the
parking lots were full of Excursions towing HUGE horse trailers. I talked to a
few folks about them. They liked the V10 for towing the room and the
sturdiness of the frame. The V10s with low miles sell well. But, the big
money was for the diesels. I wonder if there is an opportunity for buying up
used Excursions and fixing them and reselling them for premium prices. It would
be similar to the guy who does the same thing with the Jeep Grand Wagoneers.
If I had the time, money and mechanical expertise, I would really consider it.

A friend of mine drives an Excursion. It is his daily driver. I still don't
understand that. He doesn't even tow anything.

Re: [MBZ] 2007 Ford Expedition EL

2016-09-14 Thread Donald Snook via Mercedes
I remember years ago, the conventional wisdom was if the vehicle has a lot of
miles and the transmission has never been serviced, then its best to leave it
alone. Is that still true with much more modern transmissions? The only
transmission issue I have ever had was with my 1981 Oldsmobile 98. But, it had
the 2004r transmission which was notorious for failure at 100,000 miles. It
had 135,000 when it failed. Of all the other cars I have had, I have never had
a transmission problem (knocking on wood!). But, I have done transmission
services on many on many of them to try to be pro-active about it. Except of
course, the BMW's I have had because apparently it is a sealed transmission and
to service it requires a big ordeal.

Very interesting story - thanks!

Is there any ability to quantify the amount of emissions bad stuff
that went in to our atmosphere? That is, emissions outside the
state/federal requirements? Maybe the defeat only allowed emissions
equal to one car in a hundred cars, i.e. indecipherable.

Perhaps instead of fines and punishment, the VW Dieselgate design team
should be required to sing as federal employees for their punishment.
Their punishment would be to innovate using their defeat mechanism
design skills that defeated the regulations to see other defeat
mechanisms that are probably being used by other companies, i.e. Get
Smart - employ innovation instead of trying to punish/control
multi-national behemoths. Control of multi-national behemoths
requires a greater innovation than bureaucracy can ever muster - we
