Re: [MBZ] Borked the tilt roof

2016-11-11 Thread Peter Frederick via Mercedes
I have also had the cable break at the sunroof, which makes for
strange operation.

If the sunroof is level with the roof and not tilted, the cable end
may have come adrift. If it's sitting crooked, the lift angles are
broken.

Watching a truly EXCELLENT Wheeler Dealers episode featuring a clean CA

FWIW, I checked the EPC just briefly and on the OM603 they only sell the

My understanding is that's it's less that the wire gets stuck than that the
aluminum scrapings contaminate the feed so that steel welding in the future
is compromised. Both effects, really.

2016-11-11 Thread OK Don via Mercedes
Phillip wins the prize - Yes, aluminum flakes off in the long tube from the
machine and gets stuck in there. You use a spool gun to eliminate that
problem when welding aluminum. That is the reason I chose the MIG machine I
did - least expensive with spool gun capability. I have the spool gun, but
haven't bought a tank of just argon yet to try it out.

Re: [MBZ] Injector and Glow Plug Swap, Complete!

2016-11-11 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
Some additional observations:

Insides of manifold and crossover pipe were oily, but there wasn’t much
buildup. I didn’t see a lot of value in taking the time to clean them out. I
recently capped off the vacuum line to the EGR, too, but I don’t see that
affecting the manifold significantly.

The big pressure sender on the manifold was completely plugged up with oily
crud. I unplugged it and cleaned it as best I could with solvent. I need to
look this up to see what the purpose is. Overpressure, maybe?

Disassembled all the linkages, and brother, are there a lot of them(!) and
lubed ball joints with ATF.

Replaced return hoses with new. At first I was going to reuse the existing
hoses, as they were put on the car in March, but as I started to reinstall them
I realized that the rubber had already started to harden. I had a meter of new
hose ready to go and I’m glad I did. It went on a lot easier than the old hose.

Replaced all of the plastic line clips and rubber pads that go below them.
Money well spent, as most were brittle and broke upon removal and the rubber
pads were rock hard. They’re not expensive, either.

Kudos for Jaime for rebuilding my injectors and getting them within pretty
tight tolerances. I’m sure that’s the reason why the engine is so smooth. I
had some Monarch nozzles shipped to him and he did the assembly and pop testing
and calibration. Thanks, Jaime, you rock!

Glow plugs didn’t look too bad, but new Bosch glow plugs were only $5/each from
Rock Auto, so it just seemed like a good thing to do while I had everything
apart. Reaming out the GP bores wasn’t bad - there was only resistance in a
couple of them, and they reamed out nicely.

I’ve got a nice road trip over to Pinellas County tomorrow morning that will
allow me to get things up to speed for a bit and break things in. I’ll report
back any observations at that time if I notice anything.

Dan

Re: [MBZ] MIG welding with spool gun

2016-11-11 Thread G Mann via Mercedes
Not sure how to answer that to your satisfaction.

Metal Inert Gas [MIG] welders, commonly known as "wire feed welders" have a
spool gun which feeds weld metal wire into the Inert gas envelope at the
gun tip.

The wire is both filler wire and electrode.

Perhaps, you were thinking TIG welder? Tungsten Inert Gas welders use a
Tungsten rod as the electrode, which heats the weld puddle at the join line
of the parts being welded and the filler metal is fed by hand [two handed
operation] to build the weld bead.

The "inert gas" envelope used in both MIG and TIG welders is commonly
Argon, or a mixture of Carbon Dioxide and Argon, it's purpose is to shield
the active weld puddle from contamination by reaction with the atmosphere.

The alternate method used by some MIG welders is to use a "Flux Core Wire"
which is weld wire infused with welding flux intended to provide a shield
at the weld puddle to block contamination of the weld.. Flux Core Wire is,
in my experience, far less than perfect.. it does not yield consistent weld
beads, and less than "pretty" weld joints.

Re: [MBZ] Injector and Glow Plug Swap, Part Two

2016-11-11 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
Yeah, injectors came out first for just that reason….

#6 came out after a little soaking time. It wasn’t happy about it, but with a
lot of back and forthing it eventually came out.

Just reamed the glow plug bores. Nothing significant, but messy. Reamed them
twice then used a lint free swab to get as much of the grease and remaining
crud out of the prechamber.

Just took the heat shields out, too.

Interesting, as I’ve never done this on an OM603, just an OM617 - there are
plastic “sleeves” in the injector bores. Not sure what they’re for other than
maybe to provide a thermal break. I took them out and will be cleaning them
with some soap and a brush as they’re dirty. It’s the Martha in me…

Once they’re done the injectors will go in and the reassembly will commence.
Had to come in and get the torque values for everything as I begin to
reassemble….

Thanks!

Dan

Larry,

Arguably your '91 300D is one of the best, I'd say put your cash into
keeping that car going. I think you can easily get to 500k if you keep up
with maintenance and repairs. My '87 wagon is now up to about 362k miles,
no sign of quitting. '95 E300 with OM606 is up to about 371k.

If you've got that #6 injector out, rig a plastic tube to dribble some
Kroil on the inside end of the glow plug, and keep working it slowly back
and forth.

The OM603 engines are NOT known for glow plugs breaking off like the OM606,
but you don't want to be the first!

[MBZ] Injector and Glow Plug Swap, Part One

2016-11-11 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
Just came in for a break.

Started at 8:30 with a hot engine. Got manifold, lines, injectors and all but
one glow plug out so far. Some observations:

Someone in a previous time was a ham-handed oaf. I broke a 14mm flare nut
wrench removing the line nut on the number two injector line at the pump. Holy
mother of pearl was that thing tight! I was really scared I wouldn’t be able
to get it loose. Found similar none-torque wrench issues elsewhere, such as on
the injectors. I would like to beat whoever did this on and about the head and
face with my torque wrench.

Glow plugs were strange. Treating them carefully, I had soaked all with Kroil
several times this week, and again this morning before starting. Number one
was “crunchy”, but by carefully working it back and forth maybe 20-30 degrees
at a time it finally came out. Number two was similar, but 3-5 were not a
problem at all.

Number six is still in place. It’s tight. It’s not hard to get to on this
engine, but I only got maybe 10-20 degrees out of it before it put up some
serious resistance. I soaked it with some more Kroil and took a break. I’m
sure it will come out, but it might be the worst of the bunch. I’m wondering
if it’s an original due to it’s complete difference in removal compared to the
others.

When I head back out I’ll take another stab at the number six injector, then
commence with reaming all of the injector holes. When completed, it will be
new glow plugs with lots of anti-seize, rebuilt injectors with new heat
shields, then reassembly of everything with new gaskets, clips, pads, etc.
Hopefully I’ll be done in time for a late lunch.

Plenty of pictures will be posted and I’ll probably write a DIY for BenzWorld,
too.

Re: [MBZ] Comments about Possible Purchase

2016-11-11 Thread Mitch Haley via Mercedes
Oh, and as with S123/124, the wagons have rear SLS.
And the 210 SLS fluid is pretty much unique to the 210, you don't use 123 fluid
in it.
When these cars were new, MBZ had figured out that more transmission failures
during the warranty period were caused by people getting dirt on the dipstick
than by running out of fluid, so they did away with the dipstick and claimed the
transmissions were 'sealed for life'. Well, if you expect to get 200-400k on a
transmission, you aren't going to get there on the original fluid. MBZ later
came out with a fluid change schedule.
Some of these very low mile, possibly city, cars you're looking at might have
done more shifting than my 260k highway / rural car, and they might still have
the original fluid inside. Or they might be garage queens that only come out for
family vacations and other occasions that need AWD or station wagons.
One owner vehicles serviced by MBZ dealers are always a plus.

I'm still maybe kicking myself for not buying a 180k ML350 that was a nice dark
shade of green, one owner, and dealer serviced for the first 100k. The last few
years, they'd been taking it to Instant Oil Change every 10-12k, probably
whenever the service reminder light came on. I hope IOC used the right oil and
fleece filters for that drain schedule.
Mitch.

W210s have their upper spring mounts on the body, lower mount in the middle of
the lower control arm.

4matic puts a drive shaft right through the middle of the spring, so the spring
had to be moved. They put the 4matic springs around the shocks, making the
shocks more expensive but getting rid of the problem of the spring perch falling
off the body.

Mitch.

Broken lift angles is the main suspect here.

Might be as easy as adjusting the clutch tighter?

My 124 cars are smart enough that moving the switch the wrong way won't Bork
the sunroof. Either it has broken lift levers in the tilt mechanism, the
clutch needs adjusting, or a seal has slipped and is jamming it.
