Probably not getting power. Check the fuses. If any are corroded
put in new copper or brass fuses.

While on the subject of monovalves, my 83 300D has a problem of
all heat all the time. I replaced the insert, but didn't seem to
cure the problem. Could it be a bad vac module somewhere, bad
PBU, or what? Suggestions, advice, etc. I"ve been tempted to just
clamp the hose, but that's not a real solution.

Thanks,
Roger

OS 10.11 and winders 10 SUCK worse than 10.6 and XP.XP with the
"classic" interface was the peak of M$ os, and I have little experience
with OS 10 other than 10.6 and 10.11, but 10.6 is the peak of Apfel Mac

had nothing inspiring. El crap is much worse than 10.6. Winders
Wisss-ta was a disaster, 7 offered no improvement, 8 was a disaster, and
10 offers no improvement, only that it has not yet been forced into
obsolescence.

Until and unless someone comes up with non-silicon wafer based
semiconductor based transistors, we are at the end of the road. No
more speed, no more cores, just about the only thing that will change
is the details of the designs and software.

Apple is doing the one thing I've always disliked, forcing you to keep
spending money for new stuff that's not all that different than the
old stuff, particularly today where the processors aren't different
enough to tell apart, they just change the software enough to keep you
shelling out cash.

Other processors are better than Intel "cpu" chips anyway -- no one is
using them in smart phones, which are vastly more powerful that a
desktop was a few years ago. End of the road stuff, I think.

I don't anticipate any major changes in the next decade -- once you
reach the physical limits of size in computing devices, you cannot
improve speed or transistor density.

Needless to say, the software stinks just as much as it always did

A while ago I was looking at new macbooks to replace an original
Macbook 1,1 and I was shocked to see there is virtually no improvement
in processors in the past 5 years. Core i5 and core i7. More
recently, I was looking idly at windoze laptops and see that not only
are they still selling core 2 duo, but also Pentium processors are
still on the new market.

At the same time, apfel has forced obsolescence of all core2, core 2
duo, and recently announced forced obsolescence of core i5 and i7
computers made in 2011.

I no longer keep up with all the developments, but it seems to me that
the roles have reversed, and rather than having 20 yr old macs working
and a 2 or 3 yr old windoze boz won't run the new windoze; now we have
10 or 15 yr old windoze boxes running and 5 yr old macs dead.

Its enough to make someone turn to penguins.

What wisdom/comments to y'all have about the current state of computing?

To me is seems stupid to obsolete macs that are far better than many
of the winders machines being sold now.

Re: [MBZ] Sorta OT: new Computers

2016-12-14 Thread Peter Frederick via Mercedes

The original comment was not about Jon or his particular car. It is a
general thing. A 240D 3.0 like Craig's to me is 3 times more preferable
than a 300D, just because of the hassle of the constantly breaking ACC.
ACC II was a complete disaster (Crypsler), but accIII is THE MOST
FAILURE PRONE SYSTEM on the cars it is installed on. The rest of the
the world could order it IF THEY WISH as an option. MomBUSA forced it
on the US/NA market. NO CHOICE (except the 240D)

That doesn't bother me, as sagging sales will determine if they need to
put the magsafe and/or earphone jacks back on or not. (BTW, I agree
with you; they are worse than the old products)

What burns me is that in 5 yrs you will HAVE to do with out them because
they will turn your computer with them OFF. (or force you to visit the
penguin...)

I had that happen with 2 hard drives I bought in 2001. After 10 years,
(seldom used) they both bricked. No warning, no chance to get stuff
off. Just a brick because the software was written to do that.

Not new.

I drove a Jeep at the 2015 Chowdah Q that did this. You come to a stop, after
a few seconds the engine shuts off. As soon as you put your foot on the gas to
take off, the engine cranks and away you go.

Made me crazy. I hated it, but it worked. I could only think that I hoped they
re-engineered the starter since it's going to get a major workout.

Someone told me about a new 2017 Nissan/Mercedes. The Nissan is made

2013 and 2016. The interesting "new" system is the engine which shuts
down whenever the car stops and then starts up again when the break
petal is released. Is this a "new" system or has this system been
around for a while? The Nissan car has a Mercedes 7-speed
transmission which sounds interesting also? The engine on / off seems
nice for emissions but maybe? difficult for quick start from stop?

Or buy a 240D with real heater valves and have NONE of this ACC BS.

Jon Agne via Mercedes
December 14, 2016 at 9:59 AM
What one need to understand about these climate control systems is
that each part of it is interdependent upon the other parts. For
instance, if your temp sensor (under that little square grill on the
dash) is inop, your monovalve or AC will not know what to do. Ditto
for the foam rubber tube that draws air from that little square grill
over the temp sensor. That tube is almost always in the process of
disintegration no matter how well the car has been kept. It;s function
of age. Replacement of the tube can be had from Home Depot for under
$2.00. Buy the small diameter pipe insulation for copper pipe, cut it
to length and tape up the slit. The temp sensor is available, and I
don’t remember it being that expensive.

Another source for error is the actual control head for the system. If
there is any corrosion on the wheel, it will definitely have an effect
on the operation of the system. Take it out and check it over. While
you’re in there, it’s a good time to replace the light bulbs.

Another piece of the system is the aux pump. Again, DO NOT buy the MTC
version. It is crap. The pump housing has a habit of coming loose from
the motor section. This allows coolant to spray directly into the
alternator which will potentially give you multiple electrical problem
and leave you scratching your head until you track it down.

Hope this helps.

My 1983 300TD has intermittent heat. Thermostat is good - car runs at
normal operating temps. Car gets VERY cold when cruising on the highway -
heat simply quits the faster I drive. Around town, the heat works for
awhile and is sensitive to the temp. wheel on the ACC module, but is not
dependable. Does this sound like a monovalve problem?

Re: [MBZ] OT: WiFi radio / SSID question

2016-12-14 Thread Jim Cathey via Mercedes
I run wired Ethernet everywhere important, off one of the 10/100/1000
switches we make. The only wifi stuff at our house is laptops and phones,
the highly mobile items. The 50" plasma is not mobile, it doesn't need
wifi. Etc. I'm using one of those powerline adapters in one place, it's
adequate but not as nice as cat5e. Don't need to drill any holes in that
wall, though. Maybe someday.

Agree totally, Kaleb! DO NOT buy the MTC version. It’s crap. They do not
work properly, and the rubber diaphragm has a half life of burning match. I
went through two of these with Rusty before buckling under and paying $140 (in
2012) for a real MB made in France. It’s worked perfectly since then and
that’s over 50k miles in the summer and winter.

Thanks Dan, that's what I thought I remembered re: consistent naming /

How would my smart phone know which to use? I'll have to see if an answer
is available. A research project for another time (post-holiday madness).

We've got seven devices that I can easily recall that consume WiFi at my
house, and I think I've already created a spreadsheet with their radio
characteristics to make sure none were 802.11 b _only_ so that I could shut
off that service. I'll dig that info up in the new year and see if any
improvement would be gained from some other configuration.

As a side note, I've extended my Ethernet around the house using D-Link
powerline adapters, I'm pretty happy with those so far. Pretty easy to set
up, but they really do need to be the only device plugged into a wall
outlet in order to get full bandwidth.

Re: [MBZ] Sorta OT: new Computers

2016-12-14 Thread Jim Cathey via Mercedes
We're running two Mac Pro 1,1 machines using El Capitan. Some work was
required, primarily getting a couple of 4870 video cards for them. Also,
the patch gave them both the same ID that Time Machine uses as a key, so
only one of them could be backed up. (I have a patched EFI patch for the
second one, mine, so I could now get backups there too.)

Apple's doing it on purpose by now, to drive hardware sales. They must
have noticed that their machines had a service life that was 'too long',
you cheap bastard customers, and have arranged to drive you to the store
for new. They're now on an annual release cycle for system software.

The patches work, for now, but once they've finished making the
compilers/toolkits _depend_ on the whackadoodle instructions that only the
newer Intel processors have you'll be truly screwed.

Sounds like the PBU is calling for heat (no power across the monovalve) all the
time, or the wiring has a fault. This assumes your insert is good and the coil
in the monovalve works.

You could try applying continuous power across the monovalve to see if that
will close off the hot coolant flow to the heater core.

Re: [MBZ] Sorta OT: new Computers

2016-12-14 Thread Dan--- via Mercedes
If it's any consolation, there is a large community of Mac users who have
successfully circumvented the issues with EFI BIOS on older models (CD, C2D)
and are running current operating systems successfully.

I know I've done it, and it was easy and simple to do. It extended the life of
my Mac Pro 1,1 significantly.

Re: [MBZ] OT: WiFi radio / SSID question

2016-12-14 Thread Dan--- via Mercedes
Best practices in the industry allow the same SSID for multiple access points
using the same credentials, but that's more for the ability to roam and move
around freely in an environment.

My concern would how a device would discern between the 2.4 and 5.0 APs?

What he said.

The MTC valves are known for their poor quality, similar to URO brand parts.
