I much prefer a larger case than some oversize beer can. I am not sure the
beer cans upgrade as well as the pro bodies. Stacks of ram, buckets of drives,
built in optical drives and swappable components.

[MBZ] UPDATE on : #*&@ Car payment

2017-04-07 Thread Curley McLain via Mercedes
Below is the post from when I installed the new exhaust system last fall
on the 240D. The car has only gone 300-400 miles and a good bit of
that was after the new pipe broke in front of the resonator in March.
It was all Bosal. The broken resonator pipe says it was made in czech
republic. The KEY phrase in the original post is that the new pipe is
.5mm thinner wall than the original pipe. Thus the breakage. They
saved what? 20¢? Something less than a dollar by cheaping out on the pipe!

If you need new exhaust parts, the Bosal of now is not the Bosal of old.

I put the second new resonator on today. Looks like it is going to cost
me $25 to send the broken one back. This time I put a bandaid between
the front of the resonator pipe and the back of the front pipe to absorb
some of the vibration. I hope that will help the new pipe last a few
more than 300 miles.

*From:* Curley McLain <126die...@gmail.com>
*Date:* August 18, 2016 at 11:11 AM
*To:* Mercedes_Discussion_List
*Subject:* #*&@ Car payment
For more than 20 years I have been putting bandaids on the exhaust
pipe of the 240D from Dallas (81). It has so many patches fore and
aft that the section under the passenger compartment keeps twisting
down between the bandaids. I have been tying it up with wire, and the
wire keeps breaking. The front pipe is now rusted off up to the bend
from down to back. So, last week when the wire broke again, I sighed
deep, and figured maybe it was time to make a car payment.

So I ordered a new Bosal exhaust pipe and resonator section from
crock auto. It came in Tuesday, and I put it on yesterday. The
resonator and muffler were ok, but I had to saw off the good pipe
between the muffler and resonator to put the new pipe and resonator in
front of the muffler. The only problem was that the old and new pipes
were the same size, and I had no wheels to go to flaps to borrow the
swedge tool. But I had a 4" piece on the old pipe as one of the
patches that went over both pipes. I salvaged it off the old pipe,
it was crushed somewhat from the clamp, so I had to beat on it to
flatten the sidewall and expand it enough it would slide over both
pipes. In this process, I found out the MB pipe was maybe half a mm
larger than the Bosal pipe. I believe the old pipes from behind the
down pipe are original. The Resonator has the MB star and number
embossed. I think the down pipe was replaced before we got it was
replaced with a thin aftermarket pipe (that caused it to keep rusting
away)

Now in my shed I have a good muffler off the other 240D, and the MB
resonator off this car, if anyone needs either.

Crock auto does sell the complete kit. On the other 240D, I put on
the whole system, even though the muffler was ok.

Total car payment was about $160. So this one was cheaper than the
prior one when I put on rotors and calipers.

Avoid the A1050 and related models (which are getting a bit long in the tooth
anyway) -- the NVidia chip has a distressing tendency to crack loose from the
logic board. This seems to be an issue with the chip itself, it does the same
thing on contemporary video cards and PlayStations. The fix is, of course, to
have someone reflow the chip with better solder, but typically it will not last.

I personally suspect the chip flexes with heat, and failure is more or less
certain with use. Not helped at all by Apple not turning the fans on until the
chip is hot enough to boil water, which is another issue, those aluminum case
'books run HOT unless you get aftermarket software to turn the damned fans on
before your skin burns.

Later ones are fine. Apple, whatever else you think about them, does make top
quality machines -- I'm still using my TI book circa 03 for dragging to work.
No internet access to speak of, very few web sites will run on those ancient
versions of Safari or Firefox, but for personal use it's great. Needs are
replacement logic board battery I have but have not managed to get installed,
but it works fine.

But you can drive the BMW as it would be essentially like a new car.
The Packard is nice but driving it daily would likely wear thin pretty
quick unless you are a glutton for punishment.
That is the nice thing about the 70's and 80's MB. They remain quite
modern and drive like a late model car. My old diesel is a bit noisy but
apart from that, it is good. I don't feel like I am driving an antique
although I suppose I am. I suggest the Packard would feel like an antique.

Curt Raymond via Mercedes April 7, 2017 at 2:13 PM The belt on our Dodge
pickup was getting squeaky I got a replacement and then stared blankly at the
tensioner. Normally a big wrench loosens 'em but not this one.
Turns out you use a 3/8" ratchet with a cheater. The body of the tensioner has
a square cut in it. Works slicker than snot.
Onliest downside is as always getting the belt routed all around. This thing

Woulda been pretty quick but the dope at Autozone sold me the wrong belt the

Re: [MBZ] OT: Dodge RAM 1500 belt change

2017-04-07 Thread Curt Raymond via Mercedes
LOL.
I got my long 1/2" breaker bar in a pile of tools a guy gave me which is by far
my favorite way to get tools. For this job however I think a ratchet is
preferable as theres a lot of stuff you can run into. The ratchet allows you to
easily reposition. My littlest bottle jack's handle works well as a cheater. It
wouldn't hold up to high pressure applications but in this case its plenty.

Re: [MBZ] OT Mac Pro

2017-04-07 Thread Curt Raymond via Mercedes
I've got a trashcan, its a nice computer if all you need is a computer, if you
need to add anything to it its a PITA. Its realy quiet which is great.
Whoever decided the power button should be right above the power cord should be
slapped around. Obviously the idea was you should never shut it off but once
you hang a bunch of accessories it gets hard to get to the power button. My
current desk wants the computers underneath and its really annoying to have to
basically crawl under the desk to turn the computer on. This summer I plan on a
new desk which will eliminate that problem.

The BMW wagon, on the other hand, could easily be driven daily.

Not many 2006 cars around that still have the original battery, unless
the car has been "was running when parked" for a few years, and I'd call

Ummm, having its motherboard and battery replaced makes it mildly
un-reliable. If you'd had to have the engine replaced in a 2006 car
you'd call that unreliable I think...
I have an HP laptop from 2004 that still works fine although it could
use a new battery. On that one the battery swap is super easy.

I doubt you can rely upon the fact that the SKU did not change to
indicate it is the same stuff.
It is the replacement stuff for whatever they were selling.
More research required to determine whether the change in labelling
indicates a change in content or just some change to what they wish to

Just helped my son do an oil change on his 2008 Chev Cobalt 4 cyl. vergasser 5
spd man trans. Checking fluids, we found:

https://www.dropbox.com/s/3kitg76ve2xncd6/milk%20shake.jpg?dl=0

on the inside of the coolant overflow tank lid. The car runs well and the oil
itself shows no problem. The car has about 100 kmi. and uses no oil between
changes.

Is this a concern? Is a coolant flush and replacement indicated?

Also, is there a decent aftermarket repair manual for this car? He says it's
due for a brake job.

Is someone going to offer $500 for this POS?

TIA,
