[MBZ] chevy trux

2017-04-19 Thread Curley McLain via Mercedes

Chip has a nice chevy truck for sale on BAT. best year for the body type.

I don't like the black paint. my preference would be the original dark
green lacquer, with other choices being medium green, sea foam green or
yellow, in the original lacquer. The wheels suck big time, but those
are easy to change and some nerd would love to buy those to finance
appropriate wheels.

Re: [MBZ] M103 Air Flow Meter Boot

2017-04-19 Thread Peter Frederick via Mercedes
There is a frame that holds the boot to the fuel distributor. Be very careful,
there is ONE short screw, and if you put a long one in that hole you can crush
the transducer for the meter plate position sensor.

Replace the idle valve hoses at the same time, the one between the valve and
intake is almost impossible to replace if the fuel distributor is installed.

When you re-install the fuel distributor with the new boot in place, get the
back (engine) side of the boot on first, it's probably impossible to get
anything back there to roll the lip over the throttle body. You can reach the
outer side with some contortions.

I'm selling my 1997 E320. I'm posting it here before anywhere
else in hopes that an enthusiast will appreciate it as much
as I have throughout the years.

There is a problem with the Transmission and it is currently
in limp mode, I don't have the skills to fix this type of
problem and can't afford a 5k rebuild. Outside of the
transmission and minor shopping cart dings, the car is in
excellent condition, its been garaged and babied its whole
life and its never been in an accident. I'm asking 1300.00.

Location - Las Vegas Nevada
Year - 1997
Color - Gold
Mileage - 142,447

What Baumeister is a '97 E320?

What would cause a transmission to go into limp mode?

I went to FLAPS yesterday for a new tube of glazing putty.  I found a can of
CRC intake and turbo spray magical stuff.  I figured what the heck, why not?

The SD has not been running like a champ, the way the SDL did after its long
journey.  I know I will need to adjust valves, but have not yet.  This stuff
could not hurt… much.  You get the engine warm, open up the air intake area or
turbo hose.  I went for the hose.  Keep engine spinning at 2k (needed a helper,
but only had a board and a big rock) then spray this in bursts until the can
goes empty.  You need the fuel going in, or the spray makes a really nasty
noise come out of the engine.  There is lots of smoke that exits the back end
of the car for a while, but goes away eventually.  I noticed a fair amount of
blowby while shooting this goo.

Once the stuff is gone, you rev the engine a few times to just under 3500 rpm,
then turn the car off and allow it to sit, heat soaking this stuff for an hour
or so.  I went inside to get some water and toast.  Once the heat had done its
job, I took it for the obligatory (it says so on the can) drive on the highway,
at speed for 10 minutes.

Starting the car was a little harder, and much smoke, of the Sea Foam type took
place.  The drive was uneventful.  I kind of noticed the car ran much better
once it warmed up.  The transmission needs adjusting of modulator.  But, the
engine was able to make better power across the band and the turbo was not
restricting the engine when the Go Pedal gets mashed to the floor.  Maybe the
waste gate is working now.

[MBZ] M103 Air Flow Meter Boot

2017-04-19 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
In anticipation of replacing all of the rubber bits on the 300SEL/M13, I was
trying to figure out what I would need for the boot between the air flow meter
and throttle valve. It’s not at all what I thought was there…

I was looking at some parts diagrams and was confused - I assumed the boot
would be a cylindrical rubber piece connecting the bottom of the air flow meter
to the throttle valve with a large diameter hose clamp. While the clamp is
there, looking at the part it appears that the portion that connects to the
bottom of the air flow meter is actually rectangular in shape and funnels down
to a circular opening that goes over the throttle valve.

How is this secured to the air flow meter? Does it just snap over the bottom
and is held in place with a friction fit, or is there some sort of bracket or
clamps that hold it on?

I want to have everything I need on hand before I start taking things apart,
and this appears to be something I’ll need and suspect is probably old and hard
as a rock.

Confused.

96, 97, and 1/2 98 have the inline P7100 mechanical injection pump on the
12-valve motor. Very similar to the pump in the OM603, in that respect.
My 97 (stickshift) can get 25-26MPG on a highway trip, on stock tires and
me holding it to about 60MPH. That IP is _not_ destroyed if the lift pump
goes out, or you run it out of fuel. Not true of anything before or since,
at least until the advent of the common-rail system.

Re: [MBZ] Sludge!

2017-04-19 Thread OK Don via Mercedes
Unless it won't turn over due to seized bearings, no.
I don't see how sludge would get into the combustion chamber to foul the
plugs.
From Wikipedia:
"The term is also sometimes used as a generic term for solids separated
from suspension in a liquid; this 'soupy' material usually contains
significant quantities of 'interstitial' water (between the solid
particles)."

An engine engine that is run very little and never kept at operating
temperature long enough to remove all the water that collects in the
crankcase, it will collect sludge in the oil and crankcase. Damage to
bearings is the most common result.

Well, what were the symptoms beyond "wouldn't start"?

Sludge in the oil system would not foul spark plugs, but in today's complicated
engines with variable valve timing and sensors galore, I can believe that a
massive sludge problem could cause some real issues. Maybe the computers were
smart enough to sense low oil pressure and wouldn't allow the engine to start.

Re: [MBZ] Sludge!

2017-04-19 Thread archer75--- via Mercedes
It wasn't me.

Has anyone ever known of a car not starting from "too much sludge" unless the
sludge fouled the plugs, and has anyone ever heard of "removing the oil pan to
clean out the sludge"; in a car that has regular oil/filter changes; since the
advent of detergent oil additives in the 1950s? That sounds like it might be
"creative maintainence"; especially if it was done at a dealer.

Look at the layout to see if it fits your mission. When we were looking for
our truck, we wanted a single cab and 8' bed. The only US truck that had
usable room behind the front (only) seat was the Ford. My first choice
would have been Chevy for the reasons Kleb mentioned, but it was quickly
ruled out when we saw them in person.
I'm sure that your requirements are different from mine, there were NO
trucks configured like we wanted in the OK, northern TX, southern KS area -
we custom spec'ed and had it built to order.

I beg to differ. In the first place just because something is
"medicinal" that does not automatically make it harmless. This is
proven over and over on a daily basis in hospitals.

In the second place, while bismuth is less poisonous than other
heavy metals, people who are exposed to it daily such as plumbers
for instance are cautioned to be on the watch for symptoms of
over exposure. In the case of the aforesaid plumbers it would be
from the inhalation of soldering fumes. It can kill you.

Just saying.

2017-04-19 Thread MG via Mercedes
I beg to differ. In the first place just because something is
"medicinal" that does not automatically make it harmless. This is
proven over and over on a daily basis in hospitals.

In the second place, while bismuth is less poisonous than other
heavy metals, people who are exposed to it daily such as plumbers
for instance are cautioned to be on the watch for symptoms of
over exposure. In the case of the aforesaid plumbers it would be
from the inhalation of soldering fumes. It can kill you.

Just saying.

Re: [MBZ] Turkey Hunting Wuz: OT Land Shark - low country style

2017-04-19 Thread Curt Raymond via Mercedes
I'm starting small, I've got a starter call. I've listened to a lot of calls
and can more or less replicate what I've heard. I also understand that calling
is a matter where "less is more", call a little, take a break. When a bird
responds call once more and shut up for awhile, make him crazy to find a lady
friend or run off competition.
Big lead is required for long ranges, since I'm working with smaller shot loads
(16ga, best I can do is about an ounce and a quarter) I'll need to get a
shorter range shot. My patterning tests so far indicate I'm good at 20 yards,
my last shot had 9 pellets in the vital head and neck, my reading suggests
anything greater than 5 consistently is adequate. With proper 16ga wads I think
my pattern will tighten up a bit. I think 25 yards will work, will need to test
some for 30. I certainly won't be getting the 50 yard shots the 3 1/2" magnum
12ga, extra full choke guys are capable of.
Its an experiment, the turkey tag only cost me $5...

I was out loading a log onto my trailer 3-4weeks ago using a
come-along. Every time I cranked on it it would screech. Crank-screech
GOBBLEGOBBLE Crank-screech GOBBLEGOBBLE from out in the woods. It was
too funny, went on for some time. Day or two later I was out early in
the morning and there was one right up behind the trailer in the woods,
I don't know if it had determined where the noise had been coming from
or what but there it was gobbling like crazy. A few mornings later I
heard 3 or 4 of them around in the woods gobbling, one I think was out
on the island. I told this power company boy about them, he and his
buddy came and he got one right there near where I had heard that one by
the trailer in front of the house, then the next weekend they came out
and the buddy got one right up by the driveway where I had seen one
strutting one morning next to the driveway it had just run across.

The boy said they were out there before sunrise, which is when I was
hearing them start gobbling right about sunrise. He said they put out a
tom and a hen decoy then settled in about 20ft from them. They had an
owl call that they used and they stirred up a tom up in a tree, then he
flew down and saw the tom decoy and went crazy on it which is when the
boy shot him. The thing was pretty big and had a beard about 10in long
(no jokes now!) and extremely sharp spurs. It was quite beautiful,
probably was gonna taste good too.

Few days later I had the windows open, woke up hearing a trash truck
picking up a dumpster at the little housing development a coupla hundred
yards next door through the woods, the truck dropped the dumpster on the
ground and it banged loud, which set off 3 or 4 more turkeys to
gobbling! It was pretty funny. I guess they are primed for these
sounds. I have not heard any since, maybe I am just not hearing them or
maybe they have moved on. I have seen some flocks up the road right
near the road in open areas, so there are lots of the things still around.

desire not to waste the sacrifice of the magnificent creature. The legs and
thighs of a wild turkey can be very tough, but very flavorful. Long and slow
braising will reward you.

First for both. Maine charges you for the turkey tag and then a fee for each
bird to the point it wasn't worth it. Mass is a $5 tag, register the birds
online.

A friend would like some turkeys removed from his backyard so its a service to
him. The season starts a week from yesterday but I won't be able to hunt the
first day as I forgot to get my mandatory "don't shoot other hunters" safety
sticker what must be affixed to the barrel of my gun.

That is not wild turkey. There are two kinds of wild turkeys to hunt
in the MD, DC, VA area: the kind the have feathers, and the kind that
get goobermnt paychecks and should be tarred and feathered. In 1817,
they would have been. The second kind are quite prolific in your

An older friend has a late model (maybe 3 year old) Dodge Dart that has
been causing him troubles. It has maybe 15K miles on it.

Had to have it towed in earlier this week as it would not start. They
have told him that it is so sludged up that it will not run. They are
going to clean out the oilpan and the intake manifold for $600.

The car is leased and has had regular oilchanges. I don't think he ever
drives it out of town. Has command start and has been warming it up all
winter before coming for coffee so that likely does not help.

Additives? Different oil - might be a problem to change since he takes
it to the dealer.

I don't see the discount as being anywhere near big enough.

One would be buying a new car that is heading for 3 years old.
Depreciation on a new car is greater than what they are offering.

Re: [MBZ] MB attempts to build new rodbender

2017-04-19 Thread G Mann via Mercedes
The problem with the Vega engine design was the block was some new fancy
silicone aluminum, and the head was cast iron.. the coolant was some
special miracle material that was supposed to last forever...

What happened however was a dis-similar metals reaction between the exotic
aluminum and the cast iron head accelerated by the coolant and the low
clamping pressure of the head bolts [couldn't clamp the head on tight
enough without pulling the threads in the aluminum block.. This caused
erosion of the head gasket area on the block, followed by head gasket
failure, followed by engine overheating when the fancy coolant went out the
tail pipe while the unsuspecting public drove down the road.. thus, total
engine toast failure..

This happened rather quickly in a lot of cases. I owned one that was given
to me free, post failure.. I bored the cylinders out to accept steel
sleeves with flange at the top which resolved the block erosion. I then
drove it like I stole it for another 80,000 miles with zero issues. Removed
that engine, sold it to another Vega owner with block failure, then
replaced it with a V6 and 5 speed out of a later Cheby product wrecked
car.. and then really drove it like I stole it

Is the key issue something that all Mercedes potentially suffer or it is
more likely with certain models?

My old 76 115 300D likely has the original ignition cylinder. I have
never experienced any issues with it that would indicate a problem but I
cannot say that I want to suffer like Fred.

I periodically have an issue getting the driver door to lock. Seems to
help if I close it harder.

[MBZ] Sludge!

2017-04-19 Thread Randy Bennell via Mercedes
Anyone have any ideas on how to prevent an engine from sludging up apart
from "drive it like you stole it"?

Vega rather than Chevette.

Was mostly a problem where you folks are. If they overheated, they were
toast. I had a new Vega in 1974. Only drove it about 54K miles before
swapping it but the engine had no issues here for me in the cold GWN.

However, that was the era of recycled steel and I had holes in both
front fenders within 18 months. To their credit, GM did replace the
fenders for me.

encourage Kalifornia to secede from the Union and then our cars won't be
