Frustrating. My guess is that he overheated it the first time, and
that is why the new cheep chinee radiator blew. The second radiator
looked like an overpressure blowout to me. The two new radiators were
good money after bad.

I bought four of those back when they were $6 on sale. None of
them worked after 2 years and none of them were outside in the
rain. They were all used sitting on the dash. Thats if you are

Probably not unlike what we see in politics today? Old guys? -
meaningless gummers making sense to each other while the rest of the
country wants gummers to disappear. Too bad there are soo many of the
gummers still yammering on. Not unlike the MBCA in that it takes new
blood, just like politics needs new blood, but there is no acceptance
by the gummers for any youth. gummers = old boomers without teeth, if
there are any boomers without teeth, nonetheless, all boomers are
gummers.

Well with these axles supposedly you won't have to remove anything to grease
them. They have a zerk fitting on the end that you pump in new grease and the
old grease pumps out.

Cotter pins are cheaper to replace than those tab washers when you repack your

I prefer the plain nut with the 12pt socket that slips over it and accepts the
cotter. Easier to get the bearing preload just right than with the castle nut.

I had to replace an axle on the trailer a while back and the new one has those
bearings that just has a metal clip that slips in the end of the spindle

something as I keep having problems with the bearings loosening up on that
axle. I am in the process of checking and sure enough it's way way loose. I
don't want it coming loose on a 1200 mile round trip and need to figure this

Re: [MBZ] E430 radiator

2017-06-15 Thread Curt Raymond via Mercedes
I had massively overheated it around Christmas, it seemed okay until we got
some warm weather in April then it acted just like your video. It'd bubble like
that forever.
Fred, Dimitri, Dwight and I replaced the head gasket and it was fine until I
got it out on the highway the first time, then it was back to the bubbles. I
think theres a crack somewhere but we never saw one and we looked pretty hard.
Dimitri found if he forced the thermostat open that he could continue driving
it and the coolant wouldn't come out. I think he kept the cap loose too. I know
a lot of you will say you can't do that but I'm just a reporter...

[MBZ] And back out to the heat....

2017-06-15 Thread Kaleb C. Striplin via Mercedes
I need to get the trailer hooked up and loaded for the trip out west tomorrow
to deliver a car to its new owner. I have not used the trailer in quite a while
and of course the battery was dead that runs the winch and the power jack. It's
on the charger now. And of course none of the lights worked. I'm sure I need to
mess with the ground as I have to nearly every time I get ready to use it.

Yes. But no telling what kind of shape that engine is in. It's in the pick and
pull for some reason. Can't look at the oil because they knock a hole in the
oil pan to drain out all the oil before they put them out. Besides I would not
attempt to pull a v8 out of a 210 at a pick and pull as I have not pulled one
before and no telling what I would run into. If it was a 61x or a 60x maybe.

Re: [MBZ] E430 radiator

2017-06-15 Thread Kaleb C. Striplin via Mercedes
It seemed like it was ok, was not bubbling. Took it for about a 3 mile drive,
got back and coolant was flowing out of the water pump. Removed the cap, added
more water and we get the bubbles. It seems to start blowing out of the water
pump when the cap is on. I suspect it might have been blown when I first worked
on it to patch the original radiator. Shortly after it literally blew out the
side of the tank. I'm thinking now it was presssure. You can see exhaust gasses
coming out of the overflow tank and when you shut it down you can hear it
hissing and boiling within the engine. I told the kid I have no more cars for
him, he is on his own to figure it out now.

OK so it seems like it is not worth fooling with the engine unless I can
get it to fire off and run OK. I guess I could just do the swap and
unload the half-decent car then and knacker the turd and buggered
engine, or sell the whole package to Curley.

[MBZ] Tire Fun

2017-06-15 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
Wife calls me on her way to work this morning.

“There’s a belt loose on the car (SL500) and it’s hitting the back of the car.”

< confused >

“What do you mean a belt loose?”

There is a belt on the right rear wheel that’s loose and it’s whipping around,
hitting the underside of the car.”

“Can you drive the car?”

“Yes, but I’ll have to do it slowly”

“OK. And send me a picture if you can.”

So I get a picture from her. The inner edge of the right rear tire has come
loose and started to break off, leaving a strip of rubber hanging off the tire
about 2’ long. Now I know what she’s talking about - I was trying to figure
out how a belt (engine) got around the rear tire….

The car needed new skins anyway. With the 17” 2003 SLK staggered wheels it’s a
small fortune for tires. So the SL500 gets a new set of tires today along with
an alignment. I am now about $1200 lighter. Even so, if I amortize that over
three years that they typically last, it’s about $40/month. Wth minimal
maintenance and no car payment, I can handle that.

And I put Bridgestones on it this time. It used to have Hankooks. Very, very
limited choices in the rear sizes, unfortunately.

You need to get that shop insulated and some AC running in it.

I don’t like doing any kind of car related work between may and September.
It’s way too hot, even with a fan.

I replaced the driver’s door weatherstripping on the 95 E300D on Sunday. It’s
been overcast and raining here almost every day for the last week, so while it’
“cool”, it oppressively humid. I was soaking wet after ten minutes.

You think the engine is trashed? Could it be salvaged? Would the valve
stems look bent or something if it jumped timing on that bank? I don't
know much of anything about these gassers so some suggestions would be

Re: [MBZ] Temptation

2017-06-15 Thread Floyd Thursby via Mercedes
So I went and looked at these two cars, both are 420SELs. The black
one the guy bought a year old in 1989 and has driven it since up until a
year ago when it started having engine problems of some vague sort. It
doesn't look too bad, he took fairly good care of it. It's dirty now
and the paint is faded but the interior was half nice. Some poosing on
the paint would help a lot. He took it to a local indy who fooled with
it for a week or two, he went and got it and a week later something
happened, there is a hole in the front of the left bank valve cover that
looks like the timing chain punched it, but the chain looked OK from
what I could see there. Anyway he takes it some guy in the hood and
parks it out front. He knows some other guy with a 420SEL with a
supposedly good motor, and buys it. This car is a turd. The PO lost the
key when his trailer burned down, so no key to try to spin it but the
guy says it was running. The place where it is parked was supposed to
swap engines but it never happened, now both are dead and he has to
unload them. I got them both for $425, maybe at least one good engine
if not both, one half-decent car, the other a turd. I am crazy but I
can pick off some parts worth a $100 or $200 or so and scrap the turd.
They both had good wheels so there's that.

Max doesn't know it yet but he is going to help me load them tomorrow
and Saturday. And Curley might have some interest in some bits of them,
so there's that too.

CD's had leather seats Texas sun damage and no treatment to the
leather... Leather got dry and hard.. cracked and turned to dust when sat

Winning argument for that posit is "look at condition of the rear seat". It

[MBZ] Pick a part trip

2017-06-15 Thread Kaleb C. Striplin via Mercedes
I went to the pick a part praying they happen to have a radiator for the e430.
I did not want to spend the money on a new one if the head is blown. Bingo,
they had one. It was a Nissens but I guess it will do. Some moron put the trans
cooler lines on so tight I ended up having to just cut them.

While I was there I noticed what appeared to be a fairly intact 83 240d manny,
still had engine, manual trans etc. if a person wanted to pull the manual parts
out could be a money maker. Car looked decent with no rust so not sure why it
was there.

I also spotted a 78 280se that had a really nice looking metal bodied acc servo
in it. I probably should have snagged that. By that time it was getting hot and
I was getting tired.

Drive it to where ever you have power and a welder, jackstand said

Re: [MBZ] someone needs this

2017-06-15 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
When I was first starting out in the working world in he early 1980s and the
token “shop boy” running around looking for buckets of prop wash, I was given
the chance to paint the cab of a big old International flat bed truck we had.
I think we got it from a customer who couldn’t pay us for something and ended
up giving us the truck to settle a bill. It wasn’t in bad shape at all, just
really weathered.

I think I got elected to paint it because I had a professional paint gun that
had been my Dad’s.

It got painted sort of a Ford engine blue. Turned out pretty well, as the
surface was good and required little prep. I spent a long time masking and
prepping before painting it. Single stage acrylic, I believe.

When I went back into business with the same guys in 2008, the truck was still
there and the paint was intact. So I guess that says something for my painting
skills…

The bottom line is that none of us are likely to become show car painters.
But, if one is working on a bottom feeder beater, then the paint will
likely be better than it was and will provide enough film to better
protect the metal under it.

I painted a Mercury back in about 87. I struggled but it did not end up
too bad. I had the biggest issue with the hood. It was difficult to get
a smooth finish as I may not have overlapped enough. A bit of overspray
left me with sort of lines in the paint. It was a white car so did not
look too bad unless the light was right. The sides, roof and trunk
turned out pretty decent. Probably a good thing it was not a black car.

Pierre is a good guy and has probably forgotten more about older MBs that
anyone else knows collectively. He’s the only technical (MB) person who openly
praises and accepts the early electronic ignitions as being well designed and
worth operating, as opposed to putting a “Pertronix” or some other aftermarket
unit in place of it. When he told me this a while back I knew he was the real
deal.

He is considered to be one of, if not the best technician there is on the older
models. He actually spends a fair amount of his time traveling around at
owner’s expense to work on people’s cars. Last time we talked he was coming to
Tampa for the weekend to work on a couple of different cars for the owners.

Very personable guy, too.

Subject: [MBZ] Mayan Gold

… is not the gold I thought it would be. Very red, into orange.

Summit racing had a deal on single stage gold paint for $130/gal. I was not
interested in paying twice that for a two stage base and then getting clear as
well. But, I ended up ordering clear anyway, just in case.

So, Allen came to me in original MB gold for 1982. Not sure the code, but the
clear was trashed and there was much damage to paint as well as pitting and
scratches. I did not want to get crazy or go overboard in making the car a DD.
The paint would need attention, since the body and interior are in rather good
form. No rust at all, most systems working, spare parts came with the free
car, engine runs and transmission shifts. It was really just a bunch of PnP
updating.

The paint. though, was another game altogether. I had done rattle can on
Polei, and that was not going to play for a DD. I learned all the what not to
do with that car. A real gun spray was the only solution. Would I send it out
or do it my own self was the question. I looked into cost for pro job as well
as pro paint. Maaco single stage was about the same cost as a gallon of base
coat, but I did not want to pay that much for a half donkey job. I am able to
do that level for less.

Except, I ended up spending about what I would have paid them to do the job
myself.

I had to source all my own tools and the prep items, which made for a pretty
good chunk of change. Upgrades to the compressor set up, guns, paint, prep
items. Then I needed a paint booth. Rent one for a couple days, or ask mother
if her garage might do? The bottom feeder in me went with Mom’s two car garage.

Tape, staples, 7 mil visquine, a box fan, some furnace filters, old bedsheets,
a heater, a pair of Ikea lights, paper suit, full face chemical respirator, and
the paint stuff, and I was good to go. I spent most of the day setting up the
paint area and masking off the car. By the time I got it all put right, it was
past dinner, but still light enough for a novice idiot to attempt a spray.

Turned out it was too dark to see properly and lighting is really key to being
able to tell what you are doing. Space is another thing you can never have
enough of. Wetting the floor is a very smart thing to do, otherwise your feet
and socks end up stuck to the floor after a while. The paper monkey suits are
not built with sturdy zippers, so you have to tape yourself in and then do the
pee-pee dance the rest of the spray and clean up, until you can escape. If you
remove all the dangly bits and extraneous matter, you are less likely to have
bald spots or need to clean paint off things later. Use a primer coat all over
the car and do not attempt last minute spot fixes, as you will be fixing drips,
runs and smears, as well as finding that the stuff below telegraphs. Plastic
is a crap wall and will ripple and flap, such that it contacts your freshest
paint. Somehow, a drip/drop will plop in the middle of your largest or least
accessible horizontal surface.

The car came out looking good. A veritable 15 footer if looked at in low
light. I am sure that I could have paid less for a class on how to do it
properly, but I know I would not have learned as much that way. Should I do
this again (which may be more likely than I am going to admit right now) I will
rent the booth so that I have the best environment to do a poor execution. It
might just be worth $80 a day to be able to strip down the car, mask it well,
and then take less than an hour to spray it in the best possible way I can.
Then I can clean up at a bench instead of sitting on the cement patio in the
dark, blindly trying to clean my gun. The next morning, I can be fresh and
carefully put the car all back together. A person really does need to pretty
much tear the thing apart so you can put paint in all the places it needs to be.

110v welder, I think I paid $250 for my Lincoln Handy Mig. Someday I'll get a
bottle of gas for it, for now flux core is usable. Also at some point I'll get
a sub panel in my garage so I've got a proper circuit to run it off of. Right
now if I weld more than about 1 minute straight the breaker trips.
For your purposes a 3kw generator would suit.

Excellent advice.  Now I need to get a welder ($$) and learn how to use
it (time).  Oh, and the barn will need the power turned back on ($$).
There probably aren't any 220V outlets so I will need to get into the
box to wire something up ($$, time).

Or maybe I will just leave it until I might really need to deal with it.

Well the cheap eBay radiator lasted less than  a week. Looks like the stupid
boy may have hit something again because when I looked at the car the radiator
was loose from the top clips and pushed back. It does not appear the fan
contacted the radiator though as I don't see any damage. There is a huge stream
pissing out near the top next to the passenger side tank. I can't tell for sure
but depending on how long he drove it could have blown a head gasket. It did
start right up and seems to run fine and I don't see any water in oil or oil in
coolant. I guess I'm going to raise hell with the eBay guy and tell the kid he
is going to have to pay for the real deal. I should have known better but was
trying to save him money.

[MBZ] MBCA survey

2017-06-15 Thread Meade Dillon via Mercedes
I let my MBCA membership lapse years ago, after they killed the forum
(twice) and deleted every single post by Marshall Booth (RIP).

I do believe I shall complete their survey (which arrived yesterday),
hopefully there will be a "free form" entry for text. Tilting at
windmills, but if they want to know, I'll be glad to tell 'em what I think
of their club.

Re: [MBZ] Mayan Gold

Strong work.

On 6/15/17 1:37 AM, clay via Mercedes wrote:

Pix will be posting on BW.

Re: [MBZ] buggered lug bolt

2017-06-15 Thread Floyd Thursby via Mercedes
Excellent advice. Now I need to get a welder ($$) and learn how to use
it (time). Oh, and the barn will need the power turned back on ($$).
There probably aren't any 220V outlets so I will need to get into the
box to wire something up ($$, time).

Or maybe I will just leave it until I might really need to deal with it.

I've used this trick on broken bolts that were overhead and in impossible
positions to drill. So far.. the welding heat traveled down the broken
seized bolt and broke the rust bond on the threads allowing the bolt to be
turned out with a socket on the "new nut".

One trick that really seems to help is a quick quench with water while the
weld is still glowing hot. Seems to shrink the bolt in place and break the
bond better.

Good luck. Play safe.

Sounds like a good opportunity to weld a nut on the end and use that to

turn it out.
Heat from the weld will loosen the threads as well.
More difficult to do if the bolt is broken off below the surface but
should be fairly easy if it is flush.
