Re: [MBZ] clock?

2017-07-04 Thread Jim Cathey via Mercedes
The Kienzle (sp?) clock is electric, not electronic. Nothing uses
electrons in it but a solenoid and a switch. The rest is all mechanical,
and, unlike the later electronic clocks in the same form factor, they're
easy to open.

I ran it through their Compatibility checker and got:

-
Compatibility
Please choose your vehicle year, make and model for specific results.
Year Make ModelTrim Engine
1982 Mercedes-Benz 300TD Base Wagon 4-Door 3.0L 3055CC I5 Diesel

This part is not compatible with 1982 Mercedes-Benz 300TD Base Wagon
4-Door 3.0L 3005CC l5 DIESEL SOHC Turbocharged.
-

Why it is not compatible, I cannot say. After all, isn't a 7" round
headlight a 7" round headlight?

Then again, when I tried to put some Cibié halogen headlights in our '72
220D/8, they fit, but the thickness of the part to be clamped by the
fastening ring was too thick and I had to improvise.

2017-07-04 Thread Curley McLain via Mercedes
Well, you could rig up a T and valves to cylinder and vac pump to hook
to the center (yellow) hose. In the old days, you pulled a vacuum,
closed the valves, unhooked the pump, then hook up the tank, blow the
lines and proceed.

Probably the HVAC supply house will have a t/valves setup for sale.
Now that I think about It, I have seen that on some of the pro's pump
setups.

the refrigerant valve and couldn't figure out how to do that with only

The middle hose. When you have the tank or can connected I just loosen the hose
slightly for a half a second to vent any air.

I presume one connects

How does one then connect the refrigerant cylinder to the system to add

Can't see if that has 2 rows but if it says 4 pass I guess it does since
each loop goes back and forth X2. It looks like the retrofit on my car
was done right, there is a sticker there and everything, so maybe I can
get by with just the compressor and flush, etc. though it was starting
to leak down. Rings? It BLEW ICE COLD before it gakked.

If your condenser fittings are at the upper right corner looking at the car

some of the hot rod AC retrofit places, but you would have to fabricate your

That’s the whole idea behind the parallel flow condenser in a (former) R12

surface area for R134a to properly condense. The stock condenser has a very
different internal design which is ineffective for R134a to condense, so in a
conversion you’re getting both gas and liquid out of the (stock) condenser.
The parallel flow (four pass versus the stock single pass) is about 30% more
efficient than the stock condenser with R134a, and typical of current designs
for R134a systems.

Re: [MBZ] W126 AC Rebuild

2017-07-04 Thread Meade Dillon via Mercedes
Speaking of which, I was marveling this a.m. about how I fixed our in-wall
microwave with a $10 fuse, thanks to Jim's help and his sharing this
website:

http://www.repairfaq.org/sam/micfaq.htm

Which led me to this one, another gem:

http://www.repairfaq.org/sam/tshoot.htm

Replacement costs for a built-in-wall combination microwave / oven start at
about $1500 and go up. Avoiding that cost, I've got a lot more money for
cheap MBs...

If you look around you’ll see percentages of R12 to R134a running from 70%-95%
suggested for converted systems.

Re: [MBZ] W126 AC Rebuild

2017-07-04 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
That’s the whole idea behind the parallel flow condenser in a (former) R12
system. The stock condenser is a single pass condenser and doesn’t have enough
surface area for R134a to properly condense.

GOOD info!

Dan Penoff via Mercedes

Some observations after a drive this morning:

74F ambient, 55F-60F vent temperatures. Note that I only filled the
system to about 60-70% initially. I’ll continue to sneak up on the
refrigerant fill as I continue to drive and the ambients get higher -
it will be in the 90s today, for sure.

While it’s difficult to nail it down to any particular component, I
have to believe the parallel flow contributes significantly to the
efficiency of the system. I say that because with the original
condenser the cooling capacity would drop off noticeably at idle or
when the vehicle was stopped. During my drive today I noticed no
difference in vent temperatures at idle to when stopped.

I’ll continue to observe and report as I drive the car more. Tomorrow
is a work day and means that I’ll be doing my normal commute at both
surface street and highway speeds. All I all I’m very pleased with the
way things are working at this point. As I see how well the system
cools at higher ambients I’ll continue to add refrigerant in small
amounts.
