That was my reaction - though probably not quite so personal.

I would _really_ like a manual transmission and a OM617.

Such a machine is much too rare to let into the hands of someone
with that history But - it's not my car, or my kid so what

[MBZ] PnP disappointments

2017-08-16 Thread redghost--- via Mercedes
I saw that there were a pair of 450/ m117 cars new to the yard. There must be
some really cool parts, huh?

Turns out that neither car was in any condition to bother with. Maybe they were
owned by the same fool. The SLC what just rotted out. Mostly rust and junk that
had been stripped prior to making it to the yard. The w116 was a '78, so
nothing worth gathering from under the hood. The floors were rotted out. Both
had nonviable spares, but bundts. I decided not to waste cash trying to bring
the wheels home.

I did score the all metal C107 wipers. The idiot had painted them white all
over. Strip the paint, and I have something really rare. Maybe it would pay for
the yard trip.

There was a 420SEL that donated its headlight doors, corner lights, and
cluster. If the speedo works, I will be able to swap it into Polei while her
speedo is rebuilt.

Defender is going to be a lower speed rated tire. I know it is only appropriate
on older cars. Should not be used on anything 124 or newer. I will say I have
the premiers on my 97 e300 and they are great tires. Order from discount tire
direct though, should be cheaper than tire rack. If you don't have your own
tire machine and computer balancer like I do them them them to Walmart to get

excellent ones to over $100K. They have become so collectable some people have

When I started adjusting the bowden cable on my 124 wagon, I experienced
similar behavior going up a long on-ramp. I tightened up the cable a
bit and fixed it.

That sounds promising.

Another idea would be to wait for that first downshift to third so the
transmission has done it (avoiding the manual downshift), then move the
shift lever to hold it in third until you are past that part of the
hill, and then return the shift lever to D.

That's a good idea.

But I still have to get the transmission so it starts out from a stop in
first or second instead of third.

2017-08-16 Thread Larry Turner via Mercedes
It's a high performance, gas engined Mercedes (partially assembled by
Porsche IIRC) which is a car that will likely increase in value and will
need to be maintained relentlessly to maintain that collectible value.
Plus, being a gas car it requires more upkeep than a diesel. Just make
sure you do your research so you'll know what you are getting into.

It's a awesome car - good luck.

I would have loved a '73 Carrera RS (lightweight body/glass, HP
engine, Ducktail) that has become the favorite vintage 911 for
collectors with corresponding astronomical prices. Wiki has a excellent
description of these and other 911s. Demand and availability have
combined to push prices for excellent ones to over $100K. They have
become so collectable some people have taken later 911s and attempted to
back-date the car to the 73 911 Carrera RS. This is no problem of
course as long as the seller is open about what he has done.

I don't think a bad alignment would cause that, but I agree that an
alignment is a good idea when spending that much on tires. The place I use
provides a before and after print-out, see if you can get that and then
you'll know if the alignment was off.

[MBZ] Tires Updated again

2017-08-16 Thread Donald Snook via Mercedes
A couple weeks ago I discovered I had a bad tire with a big gash and steel
belts starting to poke through the tread. I put the spare on the car and had
all the tires balanced. I planned to replace the tires sometime this month.
In the interim I drove over 2000 miles on a trip to Mississippi. My brother
rode with me on part of the trip and we noticed a vibration was back even
though I had the tires all balanced. I checked the tire pressure and tried to
feel around the tires and didn't notice anything. I made it back to Wichita
without any problems. But, Monday I was working and the maintenance guy from
the building next to mine asked me if I had seen my car. About 30 minutes
before I had gone to lunch less than a mile from my office and returned. It
was fine then. Apparently, after getting back from lunch, the tire had enough
and gave up. It was totally flat. I took a picture. It was bad. This was
NOT the one with a gash in it. But, it did fail on the inside edge - clearly
the alignment is off.So, now I am getting FOUR new tires and an alignment.

Shopping for tires took some real research. I wanted to get Michelins if I
could afford them. I called all around to places in Wichita and no one had
any. It is not a weird size, they are 235-60-16. One shop said they could
order a set of the Michelin Defender for $925 (with mounting/balancing/taxes
etc). But, I finally found them on Tire Rack! I got the more expensive
Michelin Premiere for $600 including shipping! Another shop had quoted me
over $200 per tire plus mounting and balancing. Most of the shops were trying
to sell me Goodyear OR the Potenza. But, the Potenza was $240 per tire and had
no mileage warranty.

I hope I decided on the right ones. The Michelin defender is very popular and
is ultra long wearing. Many reviews reported 90,000 miles on them. But, the
Premiere A/S has the very best ratings for wet driving situations and still has
a long 70,000 mile warranty.

A picture of my flat is attached!

Despite all our best efforts to the contrary, some folks seem born with the
innate talent of being able to bend a crowbar in a sand pile..

We, the mechanical, are left with the decision of... do we buy an
in-exhaustible supply of crowbars, ban the ownership of sand or simply
live with the endless supply of bent crowbars...

On the other hand it is reported that some specie do kill and eat their

hypothetically speaking, of course.

Yes, an old 2 wheel drive pickup. 1/2 ton should be sufficient.Tall enough that
curb stops won't  damage it by pulling in too close.2wd so he cannot really
offroad it.1 bench seat to limit the number of friends along for the
ride.Useful as you can send him on runs to the dump etc.

Re: [MBZ] Kid tears up the car yet again

2017-08-16 Thread archer75--- via Mercedes
When wife got the '73 240D, son inherited the 110 finny which had a slipping
clutch. It could be driven as long as you were very slow and easy starting off
and accellerating, otherwise you weren't going anywhere.

The high school was down a hill, so the first day of school he went roaring
down to the parking lot in first gear (there was a hole in the muffler) to the
cheers of his classmates getting off the bus since few students had cars back
then. Someone named it the "White Tornado", and he was the toast of the
sophomore class.

Come the end of classes that day he loaded up the 110 with friends and got far
back in the parking lot in order to make a run for the hill. About halfway up,
with the engine spinning and the clutch slipping, the 110 stopped.
His friends got out while he went back to the parking lot and made another run
for the hill. This time, with his friends pushing when the White Tornado slowed
down, he succeeded.
>From then on, anyone wanting a ride had to help by pushing the 110 up the
>hill. He soon figured out that getting the transmission in second gear before
>the hill would let him barely make it to the top with the engine lugging, so
>he didn't need helpers pushing if he was by himself.

Wife and I immediately saw the advantages of our wild teenage son driving a car
that couldn't begin to drag race and would take a mile or more to get up to
highway speed, so we didn't fix the clutch until he had gone off to college.

It wasn't until he had graduated from college and needed a car for his first
job that he forgave me for the embarrassment I had caused him by not fixing the
slipping clutch.
Not long ago while we were talking about old times, he said he still hadn't
forgiven me for providing him with his older sisters pink bike; that riding
that "girls bike" around the neighborhood was the worst embarrassment of all.
But we were drinking beer so that was probably just beer talk.

Yes. That coupled with varying slope of hill, which magnifies the effect.

The only downside to tightening the cable is that it will tend to
stay in gear longer before upshifting as you accelerate from a
