https://bringatrailer.com/listing/1980-mercedes-benz-300td-2/

I owned the identical twin to the above listed W123 - 300TD starting in
1986.
It was also a white 1980 model with the same reddish brown interior like
this one.
Mine had carpet faded in the same way in the same places and the same sisal
(sp?) floor mats.

Seeing the photos in this BAT listing was a great trip down memory lane.
It was one of my favorite cars.
I personally drove it daily for about 12 years and my kids continued to
drive it several more years after that.
The NA diesel was slow accelerating, and we nicknamed the car Myrtle as my
kids called it Myrtle the Turrtle.
But it handled well and could sure cruise comfortably and quickly on the
highway.

The only upgrades I remember included using "H" rated Michelins and
replacing the Becker radio with a Blaupunkt cassette player.
In retrospect, maintenance was inexpensive, and except for the Chrysler
based HVAC system, nothing ever failed on it. I finally salvaged it when
one of the kids broke a front wheel off in an ice storm. At that time the
car had well over 300,000, probably approaching 400,000 miles on it.
Considering it had around 100,000 miles on it when I bought it, it was
really a good value.

Thanks for the memories,

When I bought the first 240D I asked my German Indy if it was as bullet proof
as the 200. He said it was except for the IP shaft (or something in that area)
which could break and cost a lot to fix.
I was concerned for a while, but after several hundred thousand miles on two
240Ds, no problems.

[MBZ] My 91 300D with the Shorted GP Harness

2017-10-07 Thread Larry Turner via Mercedes

Hi All,

You may remember my recent problem with what ended up being a short in
my GP Wiring Harness.  I don't recall where the story left off, but the
Indy who said they could work on it but ended up not being able to fix
it even though I was telling them what to do.  Anyway, my wife & I went
to the Indy last Thurs. and after cranking for 20 seconds, then waiting
for 30 sec my wife got the car to start on a 80F day on the 2nd starter
cranking.

My wife drove it home and we finally started on it this AM around 9AM.
My wife was a big help as I can't stand for very long at a time, so I
mostly "Supervised" (my preferred mode of operation) as she removed the
linkages, the manifold bolts and all the bits and pieces.  After lifting
the Intake Manifold off, we were able to examine the GP Wire Harness.
We found the wire going to GP #2 had lost its insulation.  I don't know
if it was abraded or perhaps the heat cycles made it brittle, but the
insulation was gone from the point where the #2 GP wire left the main
harness and went to the GP.  Rather than re-wiring the harness
completely as I had planned, I decided to put some black electrician's
tape on it then covered that with the Universal Magic Repair of Duct
Tape to make sure the Electrician's Tape stayed in place.  Also, before
putting the Electrician's Tape in place, I cleaned the bare copper wire
with Brake Cleaner because the copper wire was coated with black diesel
oil which prevented the tape from sticking.

Then, as we finished everything up,  I found the mandatory error which
seems to appear in all my repairs - the Accelerator Linkage that
attaches to the aft end of the linkage near the firewall was on the
wrong side of the GP Harness!  I had it on the inside, between the
harness and the cyl head, and it needs to be on the outside.  As it was
I was prevented from snapping it in place.  (This is when I said DAMN!)
So we decided to stop at that point, I was beat and so was my wife, who
had stretched the tendons of her legs when leaning over the engine to
reach the fasteners.

But we tried it, and it started instantly like it always does,
confirming we had put the Manifold and harness on correctly and that we
had found and repaired the problem. Smiles all around.  Tomorrow I plan
to either  pop that linkage off at the bottom, or even easier, unfasten
#5 and perhaps #4 GP Wire and move the linkage rod into the correct
position.

On the road again!

The timing advance is pretty robust. The springs can break, but the IP
still works. It is possible something is wrong with the timer. I will
probably take off the vac pump first and have a look. I don't expect to
see anything out of the ordinary. This Injection pump does NOT have a
side panel access, so there is nothing I can see from the outside of the
pump. On a 621 or 603 there is an access panel on the side. No such
luck on a 616.

[MBZ] 240D broke

2017-10-07 Thread Curley McLain via Mercedes
this is an engine i got in VA, and rebuilt. Starts and runs like new
(until yesterday). Driving yesterday, I heard a sound similar to a
timing chain breaking, falling and then the camshaft breaking, but it
was neither as long or as loud. Had to ride home on a hook. This
morning I looked at it between monsoons and the timing chain is intact.
Fuel is being delivered to the IP, but no fuel from the IP. Has anyone
ever heard of an IP camshaft breaking? It appears that I have a problem
in the IP or possibly the timing advance unit. The engine turns over
and the engine camshaft is ok, and I can see the timing chain in the
sprocket, so all is well there. Just no fuel delivered at the nozzles.
The primer pump is nice and firm, so I know the fuel is getting to the IP.

Tried to start it, it really didn’t want to. Battery fairly low. I put

I backed out of the driveway and headed down the street, ran well.
Went to turn and HOLYSH** it was like trying to turn an ocean liner.
Helm not responding captain. I’m thinking she crashed into something
and right buggered the RF wheel and suspension steering bits. I came

Called the girl and told her the issues and offered her $500. She said
another 200 for the tires and it was a deal. Having not seen these
“new” tires I told her we could work that out. So she said deal

So I’m coming back in the morning with the trailer and $500 and
getting the thing then see how badly the steering is Buggered. I have

I managed to find this reference to a red 600 pickup, but still
haven't found details on the black cab forward design:

The Benzomino/El Benzo is a private project from famed W100 restorer
Karl Middelhauve. He’s one of the greatest authorities on the Mercedes
600, and perhaps one of the few outside Mercedes themselves who can
restore a 600 from the ground up. He has several cars for sale, and
given the right price, I think he can part with any of his cars. He
invented a completely new top and a new computerized injection system
for the M100-engine, worthy of perhaps another 150hp or so. Several of
his cars are supercharged. And that’s from the place Jay Leno bought
his brown supercharged 600.

However, Middelhauve is a personal friend of the Mercedes-designer
Paul Bracq, and he had Bracq design those pickups for him as a
personal favour. It’s just one of those things you can do when you
have a couple of 600-shells scrapped for parts that’s just laying
around the backyard. And what’s so fun is that he commissioned those
designs from the original 600 designer, though they are made now in
this century. It’s just one of those things…

Here’s a link to Middelhauves own site, with lots of pics on the
pickup conversion.

Plot

In suburban Chicago, near the end of the high school year, senior Ferris
Bueller fakes sickness to stay home. Throughout the film, Ferris
frequently breaks the fourth wall to talk about his friends and give the
audience advice on how to skip school. His parents believe him, though
his sister Jeannie is not convinced. Dean of Students Edward R. Rooney
suspects Ferris is being truant again and commits to catching him. Ferris
convinces his friend Cameron Frye, who really is absent due to illness,
to help get Ferris' girlfriend Sloane Peterson out of school by reporting
that her grandmother has died. To trick Rooney, Ferris sways Cameron to
let them use his father's prized 1961 Ferrari 250 GT California Spyder to
collect Sloane. Cameron is dismayed when Ferris continues to use the car
to drive them into downtown Chicago to spend the day, but Ferris promises
they will return it as it was.

The trio leave the car with parking garage attendants who immediately
take the car for a joy ride after they leave. Ferris, Cameron, and Sloane
sightsee around the city, including the Art Institute of Chicago, Sears
Tower, Chicago Mercantile Exchange, and Wrigley Field, while narrowly
dodging sight by Mr. Bueller. Cameron remains disinterested, and Ferris
attempts to cheer him up by impromptu joining a parade float during the
Von Steuben Day parade and lip-syncing Wayne Newton's cover of "Danke
Schoen", as well as a rendition of The Beatles' "Twist and Shout" that
excites the gathered crowds.

Meanwhile, Rooney investigates the Bueller home to try to prove Ferris'
truancy, getting into several pratfalls. At the same time, Jeannie,
frustrated that the entire school believes Ferris has come down with a
deathly illness, skips class and returns home to confront him, only to
hear someone outside trying to break-in. Rooney flees while she calls the
police; when they arrive, they arrest her for filing a false report, and
contact her mother to collect her. While waiting, she meets a juvenile
delinquent, who advises her not to worry so much about Ferris. Mrs.
Bueller arrives at the station, upset about having to forgo a house sale,
only to find Jeannie kissing the delinquent, infuriating her more.

Ferris and his friends collect the Ferrari and depart for home, but
shortly discover many miles have been added to the odometer, and Cameron
becomes catatonic. Back at Cameron's garage, Ferris sets the car on
blocks and runs it in reverse to try to take miles off the odometer
without success. Cameron finally snaps, and lets out his anger against
his controlling father by repeatedly kicking the car. This causes it to
fall off the blocks and race in reverse through the back of the garage
and into the ravine below. Ferris offers to take the blame, but Cameron
asserts he will stand up against his father.

Ferris returns Sloane home and realizes his parents are due home soon. As
he races on foot through the neighborhood, he is nearly hit by Jeannie
driving their mother home. She speeds off trying to beat Ferris home.
Ferris makes it home first, to find Rooney waiting for him outside.
Jeannie races into the house as their mother talks to their father about
her behavior today. Jeannie discovers Rooney threatening Ferris, and has
a change of heart; she tells him that she was just helping to return
Ferris from the hospital, and shows Rooney his wallet that she had found
from his earlier break-in attempts. Rooney flees while Ferris thanks
Jeannie and rushes back to his bedroom to greet his parents while
feigning his waning illness. As they leave, Ferris reminds the audience,
"Life moves pretty fast. If you don't stop and look around once in a
while, you could miss it."

The defeated Rooney heads home and is picked up by a school bus, further
humiliated by the students. In a post-credits scene, Ferris emerges from
his room, telling the audience that "It's over" and to "go home".

[MBZ] E300 dizzel

2017-10-07 Thread Buggered Benzmail via Mercedes
So I’m here looking at this car, aside from the front bumper fascia (crashed
RF) and a rear taillight it doesn’t look too bad. Clear coat fading, fairly
clean inside, engine bay clean. RF wheel is the spare, “myassholeexboyfriend”
has the rim and won’t give it back. But she has 2 new tires in the garage she
says

Tried to start it, it really didn’t want to. Battery fairly low. I put on
jumpers and after about 20 tries to start it and 30min it lit off and ran fine.
Sounded ok.

LR window went down, clunk, won’t go up. I guess AC doesn’t BLOW ICE COLD.

I backed out of the driveway and headed down the street, ran well. Went to turn
and HOLYSH** it was like trying to turn an ocean liner. Helm not responding
captain. I’m thinking she crashed into something and right buggered the RF
wheel and suspension steering bits. I came back to house and parked it.

Called the girl and told her the issues and offered her $500. She said another
200 for the tires and it was a deal. Having not seen these “new” tires I told
her we could work that out. So she said deal

So I’m coming back in the morning with the trailer and $500 and getting the
thing then see how badly the steering is Buggered. I have no idea what I am
going to do with it.

Like AK and SKS pattern rifles and carbines in 1994/1995.
Interest picked up from near zero to pretty massive because the Dems and the
media kept telling us how special they were. Then when the ban passed there
were millions of AKs swiftly imported before the ban took effect. Then when
those were gone, the Chinese sent us millions of SKSs without bayonets and
other 'Assault Rifle' features, and the DIY market was flooded with 'AK47 parts
kits', which were basically used AKs bought from former Soviet governments for
$10 each, with enough US made parts (receivers, fire control groups, etc) added
to make them legally US guns. Bill Clinton's 1994 AWB brought attention to
'black rifles' and created a market interest in them, and in the last half of
his administration they were wildly popular, when most shooters had no interest
in them before the Dems started talking about 'Assault Weapons'.

Get 'em while they're still legal, I guess.
But if it's in anticipation of them becoming NFA items like machine guns, you
better pay cash in a store that doesn't keep their surveillance video forever,
buying it on the internet is just asking for it.
